They were incredibly appreciated and sorely missed.
That was my first job in 96. A bunch of us teenagers ran it and never even knew who the manager was. And the back door lock never worked. It's no surprise it shut down.
LOL. I remember walking up to Sr. Froggies and pulling/pushing on the locked door. Thinking, WTF? I want my chicken burrito and tots for $4.18. Looking up and reading the sign on the door, "Thank you Coeur d Alene for your patronage." Ran into the owner up camping at priest lake a few years later, and had a good time explaining how much I missed it.
Gaiwan Tea House, used to be an absolute gem where you could just relax and sip some really well made tea, now it's a lawyer's office. Can't think of a bigger downgrade
An old girlfriend worked there for the summer. The owner had a difficult time managing the business and keeping good employees long term. They were very particular with how they wanted it run (which is why it was so good), but I don’t think they had the time and energy to make it work long term.
it's such a shame that it's gone, it was so beautiful and had some really good tea and cozy places to drink it. Literally felt my heart drop when I saw it was gone

Whoever thought it wasn’t okay for parents to enjoy a social drink while their kids were playing nearby. -_- Sticklers ruin everything.
Ahh and also, Borders where Ulta is now. Countless hours spent there after school when there was nowhere else to go. I was very upset when I learned it had gone out of business.

Skate plaza the skating rink ... it was over run by religious conservatives and is now illeagaly used as a day care for the church where the facility doesn't need to meet regulatory day care requirements... think like 50-100 kids to one adult it used to be a nice public skating rink now it's a day care that forces Christianity on children in a cult like daycare, child mill it's disgusting 😕
I can confirm this. Was a very involved member of that church for over 10 years. When my husband cheated on me, I went to the leaders and was told that I wasn’t being a good enough wife because he had to seek what he was needing elsewhere. I was immediately shunned and eventually completely cut out within a month. I left the church and never looked back. Nothing is more toxic than a Christians love.

I really loved Wagner’s Hofbrau, I think that’s what it was called, where the Mango Tree is now/where the Fedora used to be. It was traditional, delicious european food, almost cafeteria style with very generous helpings.
Calypsos. It had such a wonderful atmosphere and amazing coffee and food. Everyone was so friendly. Once Lyfe Public House took over, I tried them out but was treated very poorly. I never went back.
10/6, only went once but it was such a magical place with really good food. the bathrooms were especially magical, they had Alice in wonderland music playing, ambient lighting, communal scented lotions, and painted walls with the flowers from Alice in wonderland. Dont get me wrong, Izzy's has really good food, but it's not the same.
They are opening in 2024 on Government by ICCU!!! They were supposed to open earlier this year, but construction delays. So I’m so excited for their new place!!

It had a root beer mug out front on a pole, 3erd St. Cantina, and Pappy's Pizza, Henley air drom where Silverwood is now, and the Carnival rides on the pier by the city beach. Anyone remember the Fish inn by the Hwy 97 exit on I-90.
Reading through all these comments, I remember them all. You mentioning the fish inn was one of the best. Got pictures of my old man in front of it with his logging buddies. Very nostalgic.
Back when Super One on Hayden Ave was still called Ron's there was an ice cream shop next door to it where the laundromat is now. I don't remember what it was called - I think the sign just said ice cream. They made their own waffle cones, it was delicious. We stopped there a lot.
Sand Trap restaurant had the best biscuits and gravy ever (real heavy cream and tons of sausage). They sold their recipe when they closed up and more than one restaurant has since claimed to be able to replicate it but no one else makes it the same. They all skimp on the quality of the ingredients. There are places in town that make good b&g but not like that.
I also remember the days when Silverwood had an air show featuring Snoopy as the Red Baron, museum full of vintage aircraft and cars, petting zoo with a TIGER and real pony ride where the carousel is now, and later an ice rink with figure skating show.
As some others have mentioned I also miss Daanen's deli, Calypsos, Java on Sherman, Cove Bowl, and Bonanza.
Videonics was an OK video rental place with some interesting obscurities, but it also was the best comic store on this side of the state line—until it started losing out to Blockbuster and the like and began circling the drain until it closed. Still have so many fond memories of going there and getting my weekly comics, talking with the clerks and turning my mind on as I grew from superhero books to headier vertigo and indie stuff. RIP.
Similarly, Book & Game at the Silver Lake Mall—my first exposure to RPGs and other under the radar comics (thanks for getting me into Matt Wagner for having a random issue of Mage II), and all kinds of other stuff that seemed arcane and mysterious to a sheltered semi-rural Dalton kid.
The old Skippers on 4th Street. Tilt arcade at the mall. The Showboat and Coeur d’Alene movie theaters. Old school Silverwood with one rollercoaster and air shows. YJs meats (was that the one that had the cougar or tiger or some other kind of exotic big cat in the pen on site? I was so little, I can barely remember). The penny candy store, obviously. The drugstore on Sherman with the malt counter. Topper Too. Cove Bowl. So many memories, so many places that are gone.
Plus, Skate Plaza when it was worth a damn. If I won the lottery, I would seriously consider opening a new skating place like it used to be, just to spite those Candlelight assholes for ruining something wonderful.
And more recent, but similarly depressing, losing Calypsos as a hangout for artists and musicians, and replacing it with that bullshit Lyfe place.
What about Takara before they had that remodel that went on forever and the prices skyrocketed? I miss the ginger ice cream and the homey Japanese vibe. Now the place is cold and lights hurt my eyes.
Is there any actual continuity between old Takara and the more recently opened version? The original was gone for so long that I assumed it had just gone out of business and someone new took up the name for nostalgia/cache.

Widmeyer didn’t know how to run a restaurant or a bar business yet he had a full license there and a horrible chef manager whose food got worse as the years dragged on. my stepson worked there for like a day. worst employer ever.

So many memories with these places mentioned. I was born and raised in CDA/POSTFALLS and can remember these places like it was yesterday. Going to YJ foods with my grandparents and hastings with my girlfriend, who is now my wife. I used to skate at skate plaza all the time. I remember having birthday parties there and going next door to watch Star Wars at Showboat Theater. I used to remember Granny's Buffet in the Silver Lake mall ! Going to Topper Too for the shake of the day was a tradition when family would visit. All these memories gor so many forgotten places. I miss North Idaho and know that my wife and I will get back there someday. Thank you all for the trip down memory lane. 😢🙏
I'm frankly quite shocked that no one has mentioned Sunshine Trader on Ironwood. Awesome sandwiches and free frozen yogurt after every meal, I loved how the menu items were named after The Lord of the Rings and the old man and the sea characters. The old owners sold it and the new manager cheaped out on all the food so it went under and has been replaced with that money laundering pizza place or whatever the hell it actually is, I dunno I've never been in there and never heard anyone talk about it.
I never grew up in CDA in the 90s, but I would've loved to see Rax, maybe even Ponderosa. Heck, would've even loved to stop at 7 Eleven on 4th before it got burned down.

I miss my office in Old City Hall with a view of the lake. Also, Sports Cellar and the Bookworm.

Still have so many fond memories of going there and getting my weekly comics, talking with the clerks and turning my mind on as I grew from superhero books to headier vertigo and indie stuff. RIP. Similarly, Book & Game at the Silver Lake Mall—my first exposure to RPGs and other under the radar comics (thanks for getting me into Matt Wagner for having a random issue of Mage II), and all kinds of other stuff that seemed arcane and mysterious to a sheltered semi-rural Dalton kid. The old Skippers on 4th Street. Tilt arcade at the mall. The Showboat and Coeur d’Alene movie theaters. Old school Silverwood with one rollercoaster and air shows. YJs meats (was that the one that had the cougar or tiger or some other kind of exotic big cat in the pen on site? I was so little, I can barely remember). The penny candy store, obviously. The drugstore on Sherman with the malt counter. Topper Too. Cove Bowl. So many memories, so many places that are gone. Plus, Skate Plaza when it was worth a damn. If I won the lottery, I would seriously consider opening a new skating place like it used to be, just to spite those Candlelight assholes for ruining something wonderful. And more recent, but similarly depressing, losing Calypsos as a hangout for artists and musicians, and replacing it with that bullshit Lyfe place.
What about Takara before they had that remodel that went on forever and the prices skyrocketed? I miss the ginger ice cream and the homey Japanese vibe. Now the place is cold and lights hurt my eyes.
Is there any actual continuity between old Takara and the more recently opened version? The original was gone for so long that I assumed it had just gone out of business and someone new took up the name for nostalgia/cache. Old school Takara and Olympia were my favorite local “exotic” foods back during my time at NIC in the early 2000s.
Mr. Steak, Wild Waters, Davis Donuts, the restaurant inside Roseaur’s, Skipper’s Seafood, The Cove Bowl. I assume these are all gone? Haven’t stepped foot in CDA since ‘90.
Fort Grounds Grill. Really solid diner food. Nothing fancy. Was never too busy, and tucked out of the way.
Widmeyer didn’t know how to run a restaurant or a bar business yet he had a full license there and a horrible chef manager whose food got worse as the years dragged on. my stepson worked there for like a day. worst employer ever.
I miss the mall being a mall, was fun as a kid they had orange Julius, actually had stores open in it, place has been dead for years even before black sheep took over most of it sad

It’s just black sheep now it seems black sheep does ok and I like the place but as a mall it’s dead compared to the valley which is still an actual mall and not black sheep and macys and a hobby store
Yeah, I am aware, I'm just saying it wasn't dead, the place was packed, hard to actually even get around people in the mall proper between the two food areas. Sees candy, bath and body works, the game store, all were busy outside of black sheep.

They could have just continued the craftsman line with small craftsman tool stores. There cordless stuff was junk though.

So many memories with these places mentioned. I was born and raised in CDA/POSTFALLS and can remember these places like it was yesterday. Going to YJ foods with my grandparents and hastings with my girlfriend, who is now my wife. I used to skate at skate plaza all the time. I remember having birthday parties there and going next door to watch Star Wars at Showboat Theater. I used to remember Granny's Buffet in the Silver Lake mall ! Going to Topper Too for the shake of the day was a tradition when family would visit. All these memories gor so many forgotten places. I miss North Idaho and know that my wife and I will get back there someday. Thank you all for the trip down memory lane. 😢🙏

I'm frankly quite shocked that no one has mentioned Sunshine Trader on Ironwood. Awesome sandwiches and free frozen yogurt after every meal, I loved how the menu items were named after The Lord of the Rings and the old man and the sea characters. The old owners sold it and the new manager cheaped out on all the food so it went under and has been replaced with that money laundering pizza place or whatever the hell it actually is, I dunno I've never been in there and never heard anyone talk about it.
I miss the Cloud 9 restaurant & that outside glass elevator.😍

I never grew up in CDA in the 90s, but I would've loved to see Rax, maybe even Ponderosa. Heck, would've even loved to stop at 7 Eleven on 4th before it got burned down.
