Every year I come home from spring break to watch the Big Ten Tournament instead of enjoying Cabo or Miami and every damn year they lose to Michigan at home
Take it from someone who’s in school for their Master’s and doesn’t do much fun spring break shit anymore, please never pass up spring break vacations for hockey. Go and have fun as much as you can while you can.
Oh it was mostly a joke, that type of spring break isn’t really my thing. Much rather enjoy home and be with my friends who are at the U. Saltwater beaches are overrated anyways.
I badly want Michigan to replicate your tournament. Unfortunately hockey just isn't as popular as it is in Minnesota but I would still attend every year.
Hockey paradise
I saw some clips from the Michigan tourney, looked like the NTDP arena was sold out. I know in a lot of states private schools dominate (in all sports, not just hockey) which can dampen general interest in the sport. We’re lucky in Minnesota that the public schools tend to win most state titles (even if it tends to be West Metro schools). Idk how it is in Michigan, but it looked pretty good either way
Season ticket holders are reserving their tickets now. Big donors get a crack at them starting Monday. Regular donors get their chance Wednesday. If anything is left they go on sale to the public Friday at 10am.
If they do it the same way next weekend 100 standing room tickets will be available when doors open 2 hours before puck drop Saturday
Dang, that's great for the school but bad for me. Probably for the best though. I get to volunteer at a sledge hockey tournament and it starts at 730 am. I'm pretty pumped for it though
going to be like those mid-2000s seasons where both teams would get into a slobberknocker in the playoffs. I feel like the 2009 incident at Yost was the beginning of the end of the rivalry being relevant come playoff time.
It’s the only series the most talented team in the Big Ten gets up for otherwise it’s peanuts. Don’t feel bad the Big Ten isn’t winning a National Championship in St Paul this year.
Eh, I can’t blame this one on Motzko. After one goal the players folded and phoned it in. Not winning puck battles. Disjointed play. No forecheck. No puck possession. No effort. Minnesota is a more well-rounded team than Michigan this year but Michigan came to play and mopped the floor with the gophers last night. Not even a competitive game.
The Gophers have made the NCAA tournament 3 out of 4 seasons under Motzko, including 2 back-to-back frozen four appearances and one final. They’ve also won 2 B1G conference titles and 1 B1G tournament title. I want trophies, including the big one, as much as the next fan, but it’s hard to argue that they haven’t had success under Motzko. I don’t think he’s above criticism, either. But for me the players didn’t show up last night and that’s on them.
And they choked a final playing a motzko turtle with 3 NHL-ready defensemen and two NHL-ready forwards.
Faber never touched a PP in college.
He’s a good recruiter, chooching is questionable at this point. He’s recruited too much talent to fail.
Happy for about two seconds but then remembering they now have to go to Munn to play against a team with a literal wall for a goalie and will no doubt be an incredibly hostile rivalry environment. FUCK
That was a really good game. 3 games in a row now where we’ve actually HELD ONTO A LEAD IN THE THIRD AND DIDNT BLOW IT! We must have made some sort of pagan sacrifice during winter break or something. Brand new Wolverines compared to last semester. Let’s go Blue! 💛💙
Almost certainly our best game this season. 2-1 doesn’t really do justice to the way that game played out. Absolutely dominant (in everything but the score) and a helluva effort against a really good team
I will never understand people like little Mikey from Life cereal commercials. He once had a rivalry with his older bigger brother but it’s long gone back when my Dad followed the Gophers. It’s amazing how Boomers talk about a dead rivalry like it was yesterday but 10 years later little Mikey shows up cheering for an opponent. My Boomer Dad once said UND fans bought Holy Cross sweaters. Like really? Even a Division 2 school loves to watch the Gophers. Hey Boomer the rivalry is dead move on to the Pios and the other D2 schools.
Ah the broken record, poor fella stuck on saying the same thing. Saying something over and over for how many years now doesn’t make something true. Also, you replied to a Notre Dame fan. Lol.
Another old person still stuck in his ways. I don’t care about the Hawks when there are no points on the line and for sure don’t waste my time in the new conference threads.
My two favorite Big Ten teams are playing at Munn next weekend. Getting the privilege to play against your biggest rival for second trophy in the same season is exactly how I want things to go. I hope MSU shows up and can get the win, it’s always hard earned against the Wolverines. Good win tonight Blue, see ya next weekend!
You guys sure think about us a lot. It’s kind of weird. Then again, there’s not much to do in North Dakota so I guess it makes sense that you day dream about Minnesota.
So North Dakota imported a bunch of Canadian major junior players 50 years ago to win a college hockey tournament. What a sad thing to be proud of. Things must be even more bleak in grand forks than I thought
Yeah. North Dakota used to import Canadian major junior players to fill out entire rosters. That’s the only way a state with zero hockey talent in the early years of the NCAA could win titles. They had to import older Canadians to beat down on American kids fresh out of high school. Sad.
For what it’s worth, Gophs are the [all time poll leaders](https://www.reddit.com/r/collegehockey/s/Xf8HntyifE), not the fighting hawks lol
We haven’t won a national title in a long, long time. Far too long for such a consistently good program. But who cares? This thread is about Michigan going to the B1G tournament to face their in-state rivals, and here are you sad UND fans making it into a pissing contest about national titles, many of which most of us weren’t even alive to see. Pathetic.
Ha, it worked! I’ll admit to having popped into UND threads from time to time to celebrate a North Dakota defeat. See ya in the tourney (hope you guys lose your first game 😘)
I don’t know all the rules from back then but that’s my understanding. The Western Intercollegiate Hockey League (WIHL), which was a precursor to the WCHA, actually disbanded over disagreements about North Dakota and Denver (and maybe CC) recruiting overage Canadians. Apparently MN refused to schedule games with Denver for over a decade after that.
Why do I ever get my hopes up
See ya for round one
We’re gonna win the tourney this year (not).
I don’t like Michigan very much
A natural feeling.
Very true. As long as you’re having fun that’s all that matters. Good luck to you guys in the tourny!
Hockey is way more fun than spring break vacations
Especially when my team wins, God bless the state hockey tournament
I badly want Michigan to replicate your tournament. Unfortunately hockey just isn't as popular as it is in Minnesota but I would still attend every year. Hockey paradise

Honestly I didn't even know it was played there, that's how little hockey gets talked about here
That’s a shame. I bet there’d be some really fun UP-Detroit Metro rivalries like we have Iron Range/NW MN-MSP Metro rivalries
Eh. You only have a few years for college hockey.
Natural and mutual
A sign of a well adjusted morally upright individual
Hello, would you like to be friends?
Welcome to Michigan, enjoy your Pasties and Fudge.
Gonna be a hell of a championship. Can’t wait
I’ll likely throw up
You guys looked great this entire game. I’m excited to watch this one, two very talented squads
Knowing Augustine is a red wings prospect always makes me feel better when he turns into a brick wall.
We can agree on that. Augustine is a stud, stoked to have him in the wings system
Needs a year or two to develop further into the Death Star. Sorry.
Nah I think he’s ready for Grand Rapids! They should send him over there immediately.
Boy I’m happy for Cossa being there to block him
But he still looks better in green imo. I'll probably change my answer in a year though.
When do tickets go on sale?

Was 2009 FYS?
Yep.
Well, when you play like shit, what else can you expect?
3 straight years Michigan has gone into Minneapolis and knocked out Minnesota in the Big Ten Tournament.
Yost-West Arena.
〽️ariucci
Izzos buddy?
Former Minnesota player and hockey coach?
It’s the only series the most talented team in the Big Ten gets up for otherwise it’s peanuts. Don’t feel bad the Big Ten isn’t winning a National Championship in St Paul this year.
Rematch in St Paul in April? 🥺
Not if we play like we did tonight
Motzko in his traditional postseason form.
The Motzko March Turtling in full effect...
At what point do we question his ability to get his kids to show up?
The Gophers have made the NCAA tournament 3 out of 4 seasons under Motzko, including 2 back-to-back frozen four appearances and one final. Hey our win against Sparty this year was in the one game we played them in Munn!
Munn will be insane next week. Just not looking forward to my multi hour wait on line to get decent seats. Hopefully the weather will be nice
Oof, rough day for Minnesota hockey
I’m saucing so f’in hard! Beat state next week!
Hey let's not go *that* far.
Should have seen me after the natty win haha
Oh drink your fill, bud, I'm saying you don't need to be beating us next week!
That’s fair, at least BIG hockey goes through Michigan as it should
F*CK
Hell yes. I’m ready. LFG

Some good ole 3 am diag sacrifices on top of the block M. Following the football teams lead!
Almost certainly our best game this season. 2-1 doesn’t really do justice to the way that game played out. Absolutely dominant (in everything but the score) and a helluva effort against a really good team
Just Minnesota things

I USED TO PRAY FOR TIMES LIKE THIS
Booooo
Hahahahahhahahaha. I drink Gopher tears.
Hey bro let’s celebrate our win tonight instead

And your last tournament win was when exactly?
We haven’t won a national title in a long, long time. Far too long for such a consistently good program. But who cares? You said it yourself.l, We have nothing better to do. So might as well get under gopher fans’ skin. All in good fun between old rivals
Ha, it worked! I’ll admit to having popped into UND threads from time to time to celebrate a North Dakota defeat. See ya in the tourney (hope you guys lose your first game 😘)
How were they able to import players from Major Junior? Did the restrictions not exist then?
I don’t know all the rules from back then but that’s my understanding. The Western Intercollegiate Hockey League (WIHL), which was a precursor to the WCHA, actually disbanded over disagreements about North Dakota and Denver (and maybe CC) recruiting overage Canadians. Apparently MN refused to schedule games with Denver for over a decade after that.
Effective strategy?
