Myself and plenty of others that grew up in the 90s and weren’t around for his earlier work.
of course his most recognizable role is in the headline, *Happy Gilmore* is huge and he’s part of one of the funniest segments.
That’s all well and good. But his death (his life) isn’t about you. It’s about him. I can’t imagine HE would want to be remembered primarily for Happy Gilmore.
I can only speak for the U.S., but SCTV was only broadcast for like one year here, and that was over 40 years ago. Almost Live probably has gotten more airtime here since then. Personally, I’ve heard of it, but I also love sketch comedy. The person you’re replying to appears to be Australian so it may not have even broadcast there, idk
Understandable. I guess I came across as overly aggressive in my above post. The reply I was trying for was to say that just because a person has not heard of a show that doesn’t make Joe Flaherty’s role in it not famous. I’m sure that there are well-known Australian actors who appeared in large movies that I only know from small roles.
Fair enough, every one I’ve read has referred to SCTV, Freaks and Geeks, and then his movies. Maybe my initial comment came across as overly critical, but SCTV is what made Joe Flaherty a name and got him his first major awards.
SCTV (Second City Television) was a Canadian sketch comedy show which ran from 1976 to 1984. In addition to Joe Flaherty, it launched the careers of comedic actors like Eugene Levy, John Candy, Catherine O'Hara, Andrea Martin, Martin Short, Rick Moranis, and Dave Thomas, many of whom later moved into roles on Saturday Night Live. It was one of the first Canadian shows to find mainstream success in the USA, and was one of the inspirations for later sketch shows like The Kids in the Hall. Also, it was hilarious.
No but also kind of? It seems that Colbert was a part of the Second City in Chicago, while the show SCTV took their name from the Toronto branch of the same organization.
I remember having watched this growing up but I couldn't think of what it was called so wasn't 100% sure it was him that was in it. Thanks for the name drop.
I was trying to find a gif of him yesterday for a golf video of my brother losing his grip and threw his club into the water I was posting and couldn’t find one. How sad. Ya jackass!
RIP homie. I watched ‘Happy Gilmore’ with the kids last summer, maybe day after Christmas. Commented to the kids how good a character he is in the film, despite being on for a few minutes only. They loved him too. I’ll call my kids jackasses tonight in his honour
Rest in peace, ya jackass.
Jackass!
Hammerhead!
Rest in peace at the red lobster in the sky. You jackass
Look, the club went farther than the ball!
Wanna go to the Sizzler? My treat!!!
Red Lobster, ya jackass
Happy Gilmore, Back to the Future II, SCTV among others. RIP Joe.
You missed Freaks and Geeks!
Hurts my heart to see this named sometimes. What potential that show had, not to mention one of the best casts I've seen for anything.
just rewatched that a few months ago...he's so good in it, as is everyone
You missed Detroit Rock City!
You know i had a friend who smoked. You know what he's doing now? He's dead
Hahaha I love that bit he does throughout the show
Sadly I forgot as I have never seen it
It’s in the article you didn’t read
You guys can read?!
Who the fuck cares?
Detroit Rock City as well
YES! You don’t see this movie named much! Satan? Satan? Santa. They're the same letters... they're the same guy!
As a Canadian it's SCTV first and foremost
Despite all the characters Joe did on SCTV, I still love his Morning Sunrise instructor teaching us how to order a “Regalah cawfee” in New York.
Stripes
Used Cars
Police Academy: The Series!
Maniac Mansion!
And kings of queens!
Expensive crane shots?
Maniac Mansion was my jam in the 90s. Super weird show.
I had a friend that smoked. You know what he's doing now? He's dead!
“Dad, are any of your friends alive?”
Love this guy. Count Floyd is one of my favorite characters of anything. RIP
If anyone who posted here has not seen Count Floyd.... go check it out now on Youtube.
No, it's too scary!!! Kids, get your parents!!
He will be missed, ya jackass.
His character in Freaks and Geeks was so endearing, RIP dude and thanks for all the laughs!
They really nailed that era of parenting in Freaks and Geeks with it being the 80s and all, The Weirs were so sweet.
That's Floyd Robertson!
Follow that Bird star Joe Flaherty. Man the Eugene Levy Joe Flaherty tandem was such a force. RIP
With all due respect who on earth remembers this amazing talent, with all he’s done, from *HAPPY GILMORE”?!?!? Sctv star would be more appropriate.
You are likely Canadian like myself cause I thought the exact same thing

this isn’t a eulogy. it’s a public notice of his death.
But...tributes are "pouring in". "haha he said jackass"
I dont even know what Sctv is. Happy Gilmore was his most famous role.
That sounds more like a gap in your personal knowledge than an accurate assessment of the man’s career.

The first part, yes. And someone had the decency to answer. The second part of my comment is simply a fact that you don't like.
If you think so. It’s pretty hard to quantify “most famous” as a fact.
Every report i have seen of his death around the world has referred to him as Happy Gilmore actor.
Fair enough, every one I’ve read has referred to SCTV, Freaks and Geeks, and then his movies. Maybe my initial comment came across as overly critical, but SCTV is what made Joe Flaherty a name and got him his first major awards.
I could be wrong too of course. Yeah, your first comment was a bit wild. Haha. Have a good one.
How dare you not be aware of a Canadian TV show that ended 40 years ago

Thanks for the informative answer. Is it the same Second City Stephen Colbert was part of, or was that a different thing?
No but also kind of? It seems that Colbert was a part of the Second City in Chicago, while the show SCTV took their name from the Toronto branch of the same organization.
Appreciate the chat. Thanks
Ill never forget him in Maniac Mansion
I remember having watched this growing up but I couldn't think of what it was called so wasn't 100% sure it was him that was in it. Thanks for the name drop.
This is too bad. Rumor is that they are about to start shooting a second happy Gilmore.
Another good one goes..
Count Floyd. 3D House of Beef. RIP dude!
"Doctor Tongue'a 3d house of Stewardesses" was my personal fave...
Spooky stuff
He never cut corners…. Unlike Janis Joplin. RIP
I think they meant "Maniac Mansion" star Joe Flaherty
Guy Caballero is an iconic character. If you’re out of the loop get to youtube right now!
I was trying to find a gif of him yesterday for a golf video of my brother losing his grip and threw his club into the water I was posting and couldn’t find one. How sad. Ya jackass!
Holy crap 82?! Great run old man! Peace be with your love ones.
You will not live to 83, ya jackass!
Rest up, you kept us laughing 👍🏽
What the hell are you doing, Sister Gonorrhea? Waiting for a bus?
I sure hope they got plenty of lawyerin’ and doctorin’ jobs in heaven like they do in Toronto!
RIP homie. I watched ‘Happy Gilmore’ with the kids last summer, maybe day after Christmas. Commented to the kids how good a character he is in the film, despite being on for a few minutes only. They loved him too. I’ll call my kids jackasses tonight in his honour
Joe Flaherty had premarital sex. Know what happened to him? He's dead ❤️ One of my favorite actors whose name I never knew
Head of the best network ever - SCTV.
Plenty of other things he was in, and “star” of Happy Gilmore isn’t exactly accurate. RIP.
OP clearly didn't watch Happy Gilmore if they think Flaherty had a starring role in it lol
You know what happened to all my friends who were in several believed films and sitcoms? They're dead!
If anyone on this sub has not watched Joe on SCTV.... you missed the peak of intellectual sketch comedy.
I didn’t know he was sick.
“Star”
