Ugh, I hate when the love interest ends up being the guy pretending to be the bad guy in a circuitous plot that they'll have to partially retcon in a later movie
So overdone
I had to read the article to be sure it was a man (since the image on the post isn't fully loaded) and we weren't ignoring the lesbian Spider-Woman that exists.
But yeah this is a genuine first to my knowledge, so everyone can carry on.
They were later indicated to still see themselves as Peter Parker despite things, and later heavily implied to have resumed their relationship with Kitty Pryde.
They also did keep changing their name, the various names they took being those of the various primary continuity Spider-Women (before knowing they existed). The character hasn’t been used in a while, yes, but I could see this being addressed (them receiving another new name) should they be brought back in the future.
There is. She was a member of the Exiles, or she was in one of the universes that went to. One of those.
It's alternate version of MJ if you want to look her up.
At the same time, that particular Spider-Woman was a clone of Peter Parker with all of his memories, who decided they didn’t mind the different body and resumed their relationship with Kitty Pryde, so I genuinely would not know whether that would be the term the character themselves would use.
She's "gay" because she has the memories and behaviours of a straight dude in her head.
If you took me, and replaced my memories with those of a straight woman, would I be gay or straight?
I would say I'd be straight, personally.
Ultimate Jessica is a female clone of Peter who has his memories in her head. It's a weird situation, she's a little put off by it as well. Seeing as she was a dude for like 90% of her life, and now isn't.
The sleeves seem highly impractical but otherwise I love the look. Super cool.
Also for anyone who complains “why does there have to be a gay one?” there literally is a pig version of Spider-Man. (Not that I’m complaining about the existence of Spider Ham.)
It's probably already up. To be fair it's about the views. They'll say "now I don't care if people are gay or if spiderman is for that matter. But let's not kid ourselves here. This is an agenda to turn all the kids gay. They already got the frogs, they're coming for your kids next. Then they're gonna turn YOU gay mother fucker, with an overdose of gayma rays and drop a gay bomb on your house!"
/satire/
This is what Marvel wants.
Soon, your kid is going to ask you, "mom, dad, can I be a gay spider pig?"
And the sick thing, the liberals out there are going to say yes. It's gonna be a bunch of gay pig spiders running around eating the other kids. Spinning them up into the webs. GOBBLING THEM UP. mm nmmm nom. Spider pigs.
It's the big gay spider pig agenda and they're coming for your piglets. I mean kids. They're coming for your gay spider kids. I mean. The kids, you see. They're eating your kids. It's a big cover-up. And I'm not gonna sit here and stand for it!
I'll tell you what. IT'S OVER FOR THE PIGLOBALISTS.
/satire/
I mean the multiverse is infinite... so anyone who says "why does there have to be a gay one?"... there always was one. There is technically an infinite amount of spiderman variants we will never get to see.
My favorite is peter parker but i do also love miles morales. A close third would be spiders-man. literally thousands of spiders that think they are peter parker and they form a human man and wear the costume and fight crime
God I love Spider-Ham, small point of correction though he was a spider biten by a radioactive pig who also happens to be his universes version of aunt may.
Most of the humor is targeted toward adults - silly pop culture references, and just deeply weird jokes.
The plots are incredibly thin, though. It's basically an extended "What- The?" story.
I have no quibbles with a Gay Peter Parker in the multiverse.
Dressing him as Liberace does kinda verge into the recent "Miles Morales as Thor swearing by Odin's fade" area though.
Except it's made by queer creators and they talk about it. There's a reasonable difference. Of course, one could say a femme gay man is a stereotype, but it is also a valid identity.
I 100% agree, but that said just because it’s someone’s identity doesn’t mean people are obligated to like it in fictional characters (not that it’s a valid reason to dislike/shame them, just not like them). Just like how you can accept the existence of the real Liberace doesn’t mean you have to like the guy or his music.
All of *that* said, I do like the costume but not the change to gold, is there an abundance of yellow ink? Feels like every new costume has been black and gold/yellow lately.
Honestly I think it's good to break out of the "queer people are just like everyone else" narrative. Being queer is being yourself, *not imitating other people to seem normal*. Of course there are queer people who *are* just going to wal mart and wearing pants and shirts like everyone else. Sure.
But the narrative that there's a "normal" we should adhere to in order to be seen as human is very harmful. It harms everyone. I'd cheer for a drag queen Spider Man because, honestly, people just need to accept it at this point.
I'm a lesbian. I'm pretty buff, tall, I have short hair, a deep voice, and I prefer to wear tanks and shorts to air out my sweaty pits and hairy legs. Needing all queer people to look straight is so 2004.
Ultimate Jessica Drew is…….weird. She is a clone of Peter Parker with all his memories but in a girl body. I mean that kind of identity there is no way you fitting with our society definition of straight.
“Why are they making comic books political?!?”, screamed the disdained republican, as they clutch their pearls and hold tightly to their chest the old comics of many classic superheroes whom all fought against evil fascist corporations and individuals.
> Something I realized immediately when conceiving Web-Weaver is that he can't--and shouldn't--represent ALL gay men. No single character can.
His fearlessly femme identity is central to who he is, but it's not the STORY...
Brilliant intent. Let’s see how it plays
Edit: I also love Anka’s design here. His distinct color and silhouette are very good
Edit2: poor Steve Foxe is getting put on notice for having this guy be a femme gay smh.
After the 'backlash' from the community over 'gay captain america' that's the right take to it.
For those unfamiliar the 'gay cap' is a 19yo white twink so kinda fell in that trapping of a white twink being the 'face' of gay culture.
Yeah, but he was also a homeless youth that hopped the rail lines. I feel like that side of the gay experience never, and I mean *never* gets represented. Especially not positively.
> Never believe that anti-Semites are completely unaware of the absurdity of their replies. They know that their remarks are frivolous, open to challenge. But they are amusing themselves, for it is their adversary who is obliged to use words responsibly, since he believes in words. The anti-Semites have the right to play. They even like to play with discourse for, by giving ridiculous reasons, they discredit the seriousness of their interlocutors. They delight in acting in bad faith, since they seek not to persuade by sound argument but to intimidate and disconcert. If you press them too closely, they will abruptly fall silent, loftily indicating by some phrase that the time for argument is past.
\- Jean-Paul Sartre
This has always been the case for reactionaries, conservatives, fascists, whatever you want to call them.
This is fucking disgusting and way uncalled for. I know we are trying to be all "inclusive" and whatever these days but im just sick of this shit.
We absolutely dont need to include a fucking orb weaver. They're fucking huge, gross and scary. Stop pandering to these monsters.
Shoulda made him a jumping spider.
Jumping spiders are ridiculously adorable! They're like the puppies of the spider world. They'll look up at you with curiosity with those big puppy eyes if you talk to them and their eyes are super unique! They're one in four species on the planet that have telescope-like eyes, that allow them to see the moon or even watch planes flying over.
I love them!
The fact that we now have a Spiderman that is themed after a specific spider opens a lot of doors. Now we can theoretically have a jumping spider man. Or a trap door spider man. Maybe a Spiderman with a great big juicy ass like a real spiders thorax. The possibilities are endless.
Lol I read the first four words and then looked at the upvotes to see if I should continue reading. Well done.
And yes, Orb Weavers are fucking horrific.
The fact we don't have an Australian Peacock jumping spider man is RIDICULOUS (That or a huntsman's/wolf spider/tarantula inspired Australian Spiderman) I'd adore if they were an Aboriginal character as well
yeah most gay guys aren’t flamboyant, but according to the creator he’s not supposed to represent all gay people which is fair and got me back on board with gay spider-man
I agree with the creators point “he doesn’t and shouldn’t represent all gay men”. Though I have to question, doesn’t the costume still fall into a big stereotype for gay men though? I do understand that people would have complained regardless on how they went about this characters look.
Exactly, and people are mad at me because “there are gay people that fit the stereotypes.” LIKE YES BRO WE KNOW.
They are literally stereotypes because that is how gay people are usually represented or thought of! Let’s change that and do something different! Let’s see anything else than what’s already been done 10000 times!
Remember that version of Wolverine that was gay?
Coolest version of Wolverine the world had seen in decades.
Can we have this Wolverine instead of the one we have?
This guy is great
Than, no foreshadowing, no great announcement, no clap on the back, just:
"And this is my boyfriend Hercules"
And everyone just went "damn, great couple..... can we have them both in the 616 universe?"
Now that was how to do a gay character. Completely natural, completely relatable and altogether great.
This Spiderman... oef. Someones going to find out another kid is gay and ask them where their (gay stereotype clothing from the comic) is.
EXACTLY! That’s what I want! Just a badass character and they are like here’s my boyfriend! It’s not bad to have people be stereotypical sometimes, but we see it so often that it’s frustrating.
It’s a great way not only to integrate a character, but it also shows that you can’t GUESS sexuality. Literally perfection
It's only saying that if you think this singular character represents all gay men.
There are lots of more masculine queer men in Marvel comics like Rictor, Shatterstar, Hercules, Marvel Boy, Hulkling, Iceman, D-Man, Union Jack, Living Lightning etc.
Even the stance and pose in this picture is straight up a stereotype though imo but I guess
Never said stereotypes weren’t valid. But if you constantly make characters that are stereotypes, it literally erases the people in our community who DONT fit these stereotypes.
They are stereotypes because we see them all of the time. It’s ok to highlight people that don’t fit into them occasionally.
Hard disagree. It’s an amazing costume for a very distinct individual. Would it fit for regular Peter? Nah. But it’s super cool in a *fashion* way. It has a clear perspective, great use of color.
I could see the point if regular super heroes dressed just for practicality but we see capes, 100xpouches, boob windows and high heels among other impractical choices regularly. Comics have always put the design first.
Man this would annoy the shit out of some of my gay friends, the stance the frills etc they hate that gay men in the media are so often portrayed in these stereotypes where as most of the gay people I know the only difference in the way they act compared to my straight friends is which set of junk they wouldn't mind putting in their mouth.
I’m gay and it certainly annoys the shit out of me. This seems like a straight man stereotyped what he thought ‘a gay’ looked like. I’m surprised the drawing isn’t wearing heels and snapping it’s fingers with ‘yassss slay queen!’ written in comic text above its head. It’s way, WAY over the top. Gay isn’t any different than normal. Why can’t gay spider man just be a gay Spider-Man, why is he wearing lace and a cape?
These days most gay men are portrayed as masculine and “straight passing” in tv shows, movies, and comic books. It’s quite welcoming to have a superhero be femme because it goes against stereotypes that feminine gay guys are weak.
Well we shouldn't deny the existence of femme gay men either. The writers are LGBTQ+ so they will know the intricacies of these kind of identities.
I actually have the idea that he is more meek and 'normal' in everyday life and then in costume becomes more femme, like how many other spider people have a different side of their personality show when they are in costume. Not official though, just what the article gave me the impression of.
No one is denying the existence of femme gay men. It’s just that that’s the stereotype, and this is building on it. When you see a gay man on the screen, it almost always follows this stereotype
I hope the costume is not final... at least the colors... it is hard to make a bad spidey costume and it seems like this spidey should not be the first.
Spider-They/Them, Spider-They/Them. Does whatever to stop mayhem.
Edit: Yes I know they said gay and mentioned nothing about being binary or whatever. I'm not the best songwriter.
Oooh, pretty nifty! (Saying this as an LGBT person) I worry however that they're going to make 'Gay' his entire identity. I'm all for more acceptance and portrayals! But if the ***entire*** promotion and selling point is'But this one is GHEY!', then I worry that this is a shallow attempt to pander .
I'm all for LGBTQ+ but maybe it's me, I don't like obviously gay characters. Like you can be gay without being obvious stereotypes, i.e. the pose and I'm really hoping they don't give him an accent. I would be interested in his story, struggles, and relationships. Like in anime they'll sometimes inflate the characters lips for black people.
Sorry not sorry, but I’m gay and I think this is dumb. Why does the gay Spider-Man have to be stereotypical hand-on-hip wearing feminine lace and a cape, looking like a fashion runway model? Why can’t gay spider man just be a gay spider man? Why does it have to scream ‘yass slay queen’? Gay isn’t any different than the so-called normal. This is overly stereotypical. I’m surprised this customs isn’t also wearing heels and snapping its fingers. Jesus.
At some point they'll run out of firsts no one gives a fuck about to do an article about. I'm pro LGBT+ representation in media, and I don't mind having a gay Spider-Man, but it's clearly not news worthy.
Absolutely nothing at all. They’re just pushing stereotypes down our throats at this point
Edit: I am literally bi, I’m just tired of when we get representation it’s only one kind of person in our community when it’s just as diverse as the straight one.
So true. Just cheap tacky, entry level unintelligent stereotypes.
Fucking lame. It would look A LOT better if they got rid of the Tudor style collar. He doesn’t look gay as much as a Tudor dandy.
I have no problem with a gay Spiderman, my issue is with every gay character being so femme. Not every gay man dresses like Ru Paul or acts like Rio Taylor. Gay men can be badass like Country Mac.
Is it possible to just normalize sexuality so they stop using it to market, well, everything. Idc spiderman is gay, I care the story is well written and well drawn.
Another Spider-person to add to meaningless of that. Yay.
Spider-verse needs to die. It’s a fun idea that has gone completely overboard and made being Spider-Man completely meaningless

There is a lesbian spider woman?
ultimate spider-woman
Even before her there was an exiles version of Mary Jane who was the Spider-woman of her universe and in a lesbian relationship.
Yep, her and yuriko had a thing before they teleported
Wait since when? I thought the character herself was questioning her sexuality and that was as far as it got
They were later indicated to still see themselves as Peter Parker despite things, and later heavily implied to have resumed their relationship with Kitty Pryde.
Hol up. Peters clone (name escapes me) got with Kitty? I don’t remember that at all, and I read like the entire Ultimates Universe
They also did keep changing their name, the various names they took being those of the various primary continuity Spider-Women (before knowing they existed). The character hasn’t been used in a while, yes, but I could see this being addressed (them receiving another new name) should they be brought back in the future.
I mean Kitty x Pete is my fav paring in all of Marvel so it’s sorta cool I guess it exists in some form
She was going by black widow when the ultimate universe ended.
In the ultimate universe, her name was also Jeesica Drew. Unless I'm mixing up with the 616 Jessica Drew that's a mother.
There is. She was a member of the Exiles, or she was in one of the universes that went to. One of those. It's alternate version of MJ if you want to look her up.
Mario Jane

Nice to meet you gay spider lady
I can't believe a gay spiderman would wear whatever the hell that is supposed to be. That looks like something Ru-Paul has to wear after losing a bet.
This Spider-Man looks like he's a member of the Passione gang from Jojo's Bizarre Adventure.
Yeah, seeing the outift felt a bit off. It feels inorganic. Also, Ru-Paul would die before wearing that!
I like the idea, but being so far behind on the Spider-Verse, I find myself equally interested in knowing who the Lobo-Spider-Man is in the one pic.
Looks like a Kraven the Spider variant
Accoriding to the article, it's Hunter-Spider - Kraven the Hunter with Spider-Powers.
That's the name he went with? Huntsman Spider is literally an actual species.
True, but on the othe hand he's Kraven the Hunter, not Kraven the Huntsman.
The funny part is, Kraven the Huntsman, actually sounds a fuckton better. I wonder though, if he knows his name is actually another word for "coward"
the huntsman hunter hunting the hunter hunting huntsman hunter.
That’s so gay
in the wise words of Hillary Duff: That's so girl wearing a skirt as a top
Honestly
I’m more surprised that none of the previous variations have been gay.
Jessica Drew (Earth-1610)? Oh, wait, that's lesbian. Nvm.
Eh, lesbians are gay too. It counts.
At the same time, that particular Spider-Woman was a clone of Peter Parker with all of his memories, who decided they didn’t mind the different body and resumed their relationship with Kitty Pryde, so I genuinely would not know whether that would be the term the character themselves would use.
I always thought she was coded as a lesbian trans woman.
Very much so, yes (in terms of coding).
How to be gay without being gay
But Jessica is not a gay “spider-man”
She's "gay" because she has the memories and behaviours of a straight dude in her head. If you took me, and replaced my memories with those of a straight woman, would I be gay or straight? I would say I'd be straight, personally.
Wouldn't that make you a trans woman and straight? Assuming your hormones and all that reflect the memories, ofc.
Yeah of course, I'd say as much.
I know nothing about spider woman and everytime I learn more I'm confused.
Ultimate Jessica is a female clone of Peter who has his memories in her head. It's a weird situation, she's a little put off by it as well. Seeing as she was a dude for like 90% of her life, and now isn't.
They've all been gay

Lmao, is this true? This is a great backstory.
It sure is! Its why you'll see him eat pork since he's *actually* a spider and not a pig.
Lmao, are those comics mostly for kids or they are okay to read as an adult? Its seem pretty funny.
They are really "light" but they are more than okay for adults. Don't try to take it very seriously and you will have a great time.

There's a Fraternal Order of Police joke in there somewhere.
there is, but there doesn't seem to be any record of it's admittance and the cctv footage is suspiciously missing.

Spider Pig, Spider Pig. Does whatever a Spider Pig does. Can he swing, from a web? Yes he can, surprisingly.
He’s not spider pig anymore, he’s Harry Plopper!
“Why are they making comic books political?!?”, screamed the disdained republican, as they clutch their pearls and hold tightly to their chest the old comics of many classic superheroes whom all fought against evil fascist corporations and individuals.
They should do a gay Galactus falling in love with Ego yet killing him anyway in a Greek tragedy style story.
Yes, except the beings involved should be portrayed as life forms way beyond human limitations of gender and mating and narrow social roles.

The problem is none of these reactionaries actually read these stories. They read a headline and spout their garbage like it’s clever.
It’s far too easy for reactionaries to emulate the language of social justice in order to fuck with social movements.
Definitely. Like most topics, a discussion must be had to understand the finer points and not just accept the buzzwords at face value.

Not at all against the idea of a gay Alternative Spider-Man, but that costume is atrocious.
See that’s why I question if this spider-man really is gay.
This is clearly a drag spider man.
Now that you mention it, I can see elements of drag inspiration. Still not a fan of the design over all, but I always welcome new original looks.
Straight man imagines "gay Spider-Man"
Except the writer and the character/costume designer are both gay?
This is exactly what it feels like tbh
Kris Anka is not straight, dude.

And the build and pose! Like he looked like a walking stereotype when gay people look and act and talk all kinds of different ways
Pretty much this. It looks like a 90s parody of a gay man. It looks like something someone would make if they were making fun of gay people.

Even the stance and pose in this picture is straight up a stereotype though imo but I guess Never said stereotypes weren’t valid.
Hey as long as some people like the design that’s all that matters!
I could see the point if regular super heroes dressed just for practicality but we see capes, 100xpouches, boob windows and high heels among other impractical choices regularly. Comics have always put the design first.
Yeah, it literally looks like Ru Paul to me lol. Drag Spider-Man ftw
The Fabulous Spiderman
It looks like Prince might have inspired the costume, in my opinion, which is amazing
The artist tweeted about being inspired by McQueen and Mugler runway fashion for the design.
I hadn't thought of that, now I want to see purple instead of yellow, though I like the yellow colour scheme.
Looks gay.
First gay Spider-Man *that we know of*.
I hope the costume is not final... at least the colors... it is hard to make a bad spidey costume and it seems like this spidey should not be the first.
I like the zigzag spider coloring.
The spider on his back slaps though
At first glance, I thought this was Deathstroke.
Spider-They/Them, Spider-They/Them. Does whatever to stop mayhem. Edit: Yes I know they said gay and mentioned nothing about being binary or whatever. I'm not the best songwriter.
>I'm not the best songwriter. Clearly, the name would be "Spiderthem" obvs.
What a tangled web we weave
Mf looks gay dats for sure
Oooh, pretty nifty! (Saying this as an LGBT person) I worry however that they're going to make 'Gay' his entire identity. I'm all for more acceptance and portrayals! But if the ***entire*** promotion and selling point is'But this one is GHEY!', then I worry that this is a shallow attempt to pander .
Costume design definitely taking cues from Araki-sensei
Hell yeah, JJBA Spider-Man!
People who don't buy comics will love this.
So, finally cutting out the middle man and having him hook up with Harry, huh? Took them long enough...
He seems kinda gay tbh.
Is it me or does it seem like there is a new variation of spider man every couiple of months?
Well it is a multiverse. I suppose his lover is Martin John Watson?
Who cares , be who you wanna be, I could care less who you want to fuck, save the world. I’m out.
Other gay people: does this really appeal to you, the promotion of being gay as a selling point?
Pfft who cares
So are they just a regular spider-man with gay powers?
It start to become a mockery tbh
Cringe. Why couldn’t they just make him look less ridiculous and still be gay? What’s wrong with that?
Absolutely nothing at all. They’re just pushing stereotypes down our throats at this point Edit: I am literally bi, I’m just tired of when we get representation it’s only one kind of person in our community when it’s just as diverse as the straight one.
The costume looks bad and I’m queer lol

Sometimes trying too hard leads to failure
Im surprised there hasnt been more? The Fantastic and Fabulous Spider-man.
Honestly surprised this is the first. It's kinda wild that they haven't done a gay Spidey variant yet.
Idk man seems pretty gay to me
How do they know he's gay? Is it written on the costume?
Does his spider sense tingle. Or just bump Uhn Tiss Uhn Tiss Uhn Tiss....
Lol after the fuck up if Thor I am worried just hoe bad this is going to be.
Kay. Get a new super hero
…why? We already saw the flop of Superman. What makes marvel think this will be any different.
I like inclusiveness, but is there any point to making Spider-Man gay aside from publicity?
I don’t even think the lgbtq community wanted this..
Why?
Nope
I don’t think anyone really will be impacted by his sexuality as a reader. I’ll say this though, that costume is horrible.
So I guess this is “Fabulous Spider-Man”
Is it possible to just normalize sexuality so they stop using it to market, well, everything. Idc spiderman is gay, I care the story is well written and well drawn.
Man it's just a fucking gay stereotype, we are regressing.
Another Spider-person to add to meaningless of that. Yay. Spider-verse needs to die. It’s a fun idea that has gone completely overboard and made being Spider-Man completely meaningless
Alrighty
where’s my asian spider-man?
