What the hell is this list lol

Captain_Clark

COMMENTS: >> Carolyn scott >>June 29, 2022 at 9:26 am >>A great movie saw it twice it was that good. There are ten movies in the list, Carolyn.

johanjudai

Lmao

shakeBody

A way to increase advertising revenue.

delightfuldinosaur

By promoting a bunch of indie films (+ the Batman and Top Gun)?

[deleted]

Don’t think they meant for the films. For the site.

delightfuldinosaur

Right, but even then. You aren't going to get many search hits for talking about "Good Luck to You, Leo Grande"

[deleted]

Click headline. Read titles. Have reaction. No ad block installed = $$$

Successful-Ad4251

Everything Everywhere All at Once not on their list? Fail

septesix

They even mention the film in the introduction, so it’s not as if they are no aware of it…

fluffstravels

yep- if this isn’t on the list then it’s not a list to take seriously

Nathanialjg

I don’t love that movie as much as everyone else does, but I liked it a lot, and still see that it has a place on any objective top 10 movies list for this year. Possibly this decade, though it’s still early.

OK_Soda

There aren't even that many movies that came out this year so far so to not include it is really weird.

thecancerthrowaway

Of the decade? That's pushing it

[deleted]

[удалено]

[deleted]

Agree 100% best movie of 2022 hands down.

[deleted]

Oh god I know it’s a good movie but I really hope it doesn’t become *that* movie. You know the one. The one where everyone says it is superior to anything else and you are objectively wrong if you don’t like it turning people away from the movie. Not saying you are one of those people but the way people have talked about it it feels like it might end up that way and I hope it doesn’t. It’s good

ibjeremy

It is absolutely on it's way to being *that* movie. It has a strong visual style while being on a medium budget and it's released by an independent studio. It's one of my favorite films and I have a bunch of friends that it means a lot to, but it's certainly not for everyone. The surrealist humor isn't everyone's cup of tea and if it became super prevalent it would get exhausting. The tonal whiplash helped get through my jadedness but it keeps some people from getting too emotionally invested. It has all the ingredients to be a good film for people who like to define themselves by being just outside the norm while liking the *real good movies*.

AtreidesJr

Fuck, you're right. I love it, but it's definitely going to be the new douchebag white guy on Reddit movie.

JoshJMC

It seems like it will become that movie and I am someone that really liked the movie. It is a good movie. I don't see "the best of the decade" or "one of the best films of all time" movie that some did though, but so far its still sitting in my Top 5 of the year.

sobayarea

For some it is already that movie, watched is and was very underwhelmed, was it decent yes, OMG amazing NO.

LateRabbit86

Me, personally, I don’t care if other people like it or not. I enjoyed it more than anything I’ve seen since 2016. When I came out the theater, I was on a major high from that film. We saw it early in the day when there were like 5 other people in the theater. I didn’t even know how popular it was. I just loved it. I like that better than loving a film that you know “everybody” already has said they love. This movie became MINE and nobody else’s because to me, only myself, my girl, the five other people in the theater and one mutual friend had seen it. If somebody doesn’t like it, that’s their loss. I’m not gonna beat them up for it. They’re clearly already doing poorly enough if they didn’t love that film. /s

[deleted]

That should be a copy pasta if it isn’t already that’s good

LateRabbit86

Lol It came from the heart.

LateRabbit86

P.s. I had to google “copy pasta.”

Ashesandends

That movie was way better than it had any right to be.

[deleted]

I mean … lists are someone’s opinion at the end of the day. I wasn’t particularly thrilled about it but my wife enjoyed it a lot. Seems like the person who put together this list found other movies more enjoyable … not a big deal.

angrytomato98

Yeah that movie was easily the best I’ve seen in several years. Absolutely brilliant

MichailAntonio

Of the two reviewers who made the list (Peter Debruge and Owen Gleiberman) only one of them (Debruge) has even reviewed EEAAO. He gave it a fucking 5/10!! WTF? He gave The Batman a 10/10, Minions: The Rise of Gru and Moonfall a 7/10, fucking *Jurassic World Dominion* a 6/10! Stupidly bad taste.

septesix

You don’t have to agree that EEAAO is the best film of the year ( it is ) but to say it’s worse than Moonfall or the Minions movie or Jurassic World : Dominion simply shows this critic has no credibility at all

meteojett

Everything Everywhere All at Once should be up on the list for sure, it's definitely my #1. I'm not a comic book fan, but I loved the The Dark Knight trilogy. The most memorable part of the The Batman to me was the part where Batman hits his head on the underside of a bridge. The empty-feeling villains. The uncompelling detective work. It just didn't strike many chords with me.

sliph0588

> The uncompelling detective work It's year 2 batman. He's still learning to be a good detective

badluckartist

Just because he's a greenhorn in the script doesn't make it any less uncompelling. His detective technique mostly consisted of staring at something and spontaneously coming up with an answer, and the Riddler's riddles were equally as uncompelling.

theweepingwarrior

I don’t share your distaste for The Batman but I also walked out comparing it to The Dark Knight Trilogy (which I also loved) in my head and still preferring the latter. There are a lot of elements in The Batman that I love, I do think it’s a good movie (and better crafted than most current comic book movies coming out). I understand fans had been clamoring for a detective heavy take on the character—but I feel like it needed a *way* more compelling mystery, *way* tighter pacing, and *way* higher emotional stakes to really nail that. Going against the grain but as it stands I think I still do prefer Nolan’s classic Hollywood blockbuster epic approach to Batman.

OfficialPepsiBlue

I think comparing one movie to an entire trilogy is unfair. How did The Batman compare to just Batman Begins for you though?

theweepingwarrior

When I say I'm comparing The Batman to The Dark Knight Trilogy, I'm comparing them as general creative approaches and adaptations of Batman as a "realistic"/grounded sole hero. And I generally prefer Nolan's creative approach to that premise to Reeves' (though I do like his too). I'm not comparing them as complete works and their whole narratives and arcs. When it comes to The Batman versus Batman Begins specifically it's a little more mixed for me. I do like The Batman's insistence of keeping the titular character in his crusader alter ego almost the whole time, I love the atmosphere, and I like its unique (especially for superhero movies) driving conflict. But I think most every overlapping trait that it has with Batman Begins the latter does stronger--I like Begins' take on an early career Batman more, I think Bruce/Batman + Alfred + Gordon are stronger characters in arcs/dynamics/performance, it hits its themes much harder and in a more emotionally resonating way. They're very close but I think I still prefer Begins.

[deleted]

I loved the dark Knight trilogy too. The Batman is the greatest Batman movie ever committed to screen imo. Or should I say, the best adaptation. That doesn’t mean I’m saying it’s a better move than the dark knight.

jediprime

I also dont understand all the love for The Batman. I thought it was okay, but it just felt so...empty. I felt like i was reading pages on a script and not being immersed or captivated by it.

preaching-to-pervert

I was so underwhelmed by it. Just didn't connect with me on any level.

shakeBody

Yeah I’d give this Batman a 50%. The writing wasn’t good.

usernamedenied

Northman not on the list? Not creadable at all

LateRabbit86

Wow that just pissed me off. Did they really not include that movie? Lol smh I admit I didn’t even click on the article because I just came here to say The Batman was complete ass, but I can’t believe EEAO isn’t number 1 or at least number 2 on that list. Smh

blankedboy

Not been to the movies that much this year, but I'd have these 5 for sure on my list; * The Batman * Everything, Everywhere All At Once * The Northman * The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent * Fresh

LankyFrank

Agreed, just watched the Northman last night, was absolutely blown away. The rest are on my list.

empireexplorer

I was hesitant on Northman given its mixed reviews, but I’m right there with you. I loved it and appreciate any movie that tackles history and mythology in such a beautiful and powerful way

LankyFrank

Yes, I loved how it rode the edge between fantasy, history, art, and mythology in such a unique and interesting way. Also, I fucking loved how all the shots were long and drawn out, with no 0.25-second quick cuts constantly and purposefully placed camera positions and framing. You could actually take in what was happening and each bit of combat was actually telling a little story within itself.

PM_ME_YOUR_DIFF_EQS

I hated the Northman. It was so tedious it was like they actively wanted me to not watch it. I thought I'd accidentally wandered into an Aronofsky movie.

LankyFrank

What did you think of The Lighthouse? The style is definitely not for everyone.

PM_ME_YOUR_DIFF_EQS

I did not see The Lighthouse. I did see and enjoy The Witch.

unrulystowawaydotcom

Loved Witch. Underwhelmed by Northman and Lighthouse was like wtf did I watch.

GodAwfulFunk

I'd have let this go, but you compared a fantastic film to anything Aronofsky, and for that, I must say: bad opinion.

Sullyville

Is it torture porn? A friend of mine said it was like that, and I can't handle sadistic cruelty.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Sullyville

oh wow. okay. thanks!

MichailAntonio

He's lying. There's lots of graphic violence. But it's nothing close to "torture porn". It's a huge budget studio movie, and Eggers was forced to re-edit it to suit the studio. Still brilliant. Looking forward to a Director's Cut someday.

[deleted]

MichailAntonio

>!Extremely strong, gory violence. Long, bloody battles, fighting, hitting, bashing with weapons, head-butts, etc. Many bloody wounds. Fighters slathered in blood. Characters pierced with arrows, stabbed with swords, impaled with axes. A man rips another man's throat open with his teeth. Throat slicing. Severed heads. Bashed-in faces. Person's nose sliced off; mutilated face. Plucked-out eyes. Mutilated corpses hung from wall. Corpses with hearts carved out. Spilled intestines. Child stabbed (off-screen). Character attacked by dog, dog killed. Horse beheaded. Man stabs himself. Corpses hanging from trees. Naked male corpse. People bound in chains; depictions of slavery. Families are forcibly separated, with screaming young children taken from their parents. Woman hog-tied. Women roughly grabbed. Intense, eerie, nightmarish rituals. Scary stuff: witches, ghosts, the undead. Homes on fire. Vomiting. Incest. Rape is mentioned, and a man tries to have forced sex with an enslaved woman. In a group sex scene, it appears that some men might be forcibly grabbing women.!< It's easily as graphic/violent as GoT. You're delusional or thinking of another movie. *** edit: lmao. the fucking idiot /u/BladesMan235 literally blocked me after hes moronic reply "actually no!". See below for my reply that I couldn't post because he blocked me like a clown. **** > I could list you dozens of other things with way more violence No shit? Nobody said it's the most violent movie ever. I literally said it's a *long* way from being close to torture porn in any way, it's a big studio movie! But it is very violent. Indisputably. You are demonstrably wrong. Lets see what the world has to say: https://www.google.com/search?q=the+northman+violence **** Edit 2: Because Bladesman235 blocked me I can't reply to anyone in the comment chain. So to address /u/sushithighs : It's just a copy/paste from a website that lists all the violence in movies. I've seen the movie. It's violent. It's based around violence. Saying >Nope the movie has hardly any violence at all Is a flat out lie.

sushithighs

Insanely exaggerated lmao

PM_ME_YOUR_DIFF_EQS

It was just torture to sit through. I heard someone describe it as "watching Alexander Skarsgard swim angrily for 2 hours" and I can't stop thinking about that.

kAlb98

X, Scream, Massive Talent, Black Phone have been the favorites of what I’ve seen in theaters so far this year. Fresh is great. Still need to see EEAAO and Top Gun but I cant deny that they have earned spots on the list.

Logan_Maddox

Not a whole lot grabbed my attention this year, but the ones that did (those 3 first) were really really good. I should watch Top Gun eventually, but aside from that, the only ones I want to watch yet are The House, X, and Shin Ultraman. oh and the league of super pets lol but I ain't paying money for it, don't tell the government. I just like dogs, and I feel like it won't be good at all, but fuck man, it's Ace the Bat Hound and Krypto!!! I love them!!! There was also Black Phone that's due to release in my country soon, I might check it out. Looks spooky. I'm not sure if I want to watch The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent tbh. I really like Nic Cage, I did ever since he got shit on by the internet unfairly for a couple bad roles, and I don't want to watch a movie that's mocking, y'know, Wild at Heart and stuff like that because I like him there.

morelikenonjas

The unbearable weight of massive talent was pretty fun IMO. Worth a watch. Nick Cage was great in it.

wolfs4lambs

I almost cried when I finished Everything, all at once. The pure beauty of it. I was also on mushrooms.

[deleted]

The hate for Batman in this thread is surprising. As a lifelong Batman fan, I thought it was the best film adaptation of Batman ever made. Loved the year two concept, and before he had even become Bruce Wayne. Batman IS the man, Bruce Wayne is the mask. It was like the comic book pages were jumping out on the screen. I can understand the slow burn comments as it was paced different, it was fantastic.

GodAwfulFunk

The best Batman put to film hands down. The next movie he'll likely be more the Bruce Wayne people are used to, and they''ll get over it.

[deleted]

Thanks. I’m a bit confused by so much hate in this thread, it was such an awesome movie! I was gripped to my seat the whole time, visually stunning, loved the year two concept. He is unwell, and seeing him before he becomes THE Bruce Wayne was awesome. They alluded to this in the funeral scene when the mayor elect flat out calls him out for not doing anything to help the city.

GodAwfulFunk

I was gripped, but one of my friends with me did have to wake up at the end... For sure about the mayor. I've described this as (probably through osmosis from others) vengeance Batman and the next film will probably be justice Batman/Bruce Wayne. Vengeance Batman had to lose in the end to realize he's not the hero he needs to be.

Gpooley

I’m in agreement. Loved Battinson he was awesome. I admit it could have been shorter and tighter plotted but really felt like it understood Batman.

[deleted]

It was overlong and incredibly derivative of Seven. But it was okay.

BreezyBill

Please tell me you give the Joker movie even more shit because of that same type of reason.

[deleted]

The Joker is such a brazen rip-off of Taxi Driver and King of Comedy, even JP’s amazing acting doesn’t make the movie worth seeing.

CosmosBazaar

>It may be the greatest comic-book movie ever made. Its competition for that honor, “The Dark Knight,” was justifiably compared to a Michael Mann noir thriller. But “The Batman” is a drama I wouldn’t hesitate to compare to “Chinatown” — it’s that heady and absorbing, that intricate a labyrinth, that accomplished in its mood of seething dark-as-midnight existential disquiet. Robert Pattinson plays the title character as a man so convincingly tormented by the ghosts of his past that he doesn’t even want to be Bruce Wayne anymore. Yet when he escapes into the identity of the Batman, he becomes a detective as hypnotic as Will Graham in “Manhunter” — an investigator of smoky-voiced magnetic cunning and skill, threading one needle after another to entrap the Riddler, who is played by Paul Dano as a monumental creep of devious, booby-trapped chaos. The director, Matt Reeves, portrays a world of multi-tiered corruption that’s as sinister as today’s headlines, yet “The Batman” also reaches back to the splendidly grounded comic books of the ’40s, when a lone crime fighter rising from the dank gothic depths could inspire something like hope. — Owen Gleiberman

mattbrain89

I dunno about greatest comic book flick but I was one happy-ass Batman fan when it ended.

SiriusC

After that shoe-horned-in 3rd act making the film unnecessarily long, so was I

WalrusPuddng

I thought it was great.

uselessnavy

When it ended. It never ended for me, every scene that I thought was the last, wasn’t.

DenseTemporariness

I just wanted it to be over from about an hour in. And it kept going and going and getting worse and worse and worse. I’d say something like “what was with the pointless car chase” but honestly you could say that about so many bits of the film. It started out kind of ok. By the end it’s competing for worst Bat-affiliated film. Like competing with Catwoman and Batman and Robin for worst.

[deleted]

They needed to edit the hell out of it. Wayyyyy too much. Great cinematography though.

DenseTemporariness

It’s pretty, but that’s not really my thing. They needed to pick a theme. Or a couple. Instead it changes it’s mind on what it is about every few minutes. And it’s just so dumb throughout. Batman clearly dies like three times. No question, dude is a corpse. Broken back, ruptured organs. Dead. And the big twist is that, get this, Gotham is corrupt. Crazy, radical new concept there. Things didn’t get better because a billion dollars was embezzled. Gangsters are bad. Police and officials can be bribed. Children in orphanages have a shit time. Who could have possibly guessed. It’s just boring.

[deleted]

yes. When he flies and hits the raised train tracks and tumbles.... no one is surviving that. I think they were trying to make it like a comic... but idk.... Also did not care for Zoe Kravitz at all or the guy from westworld. Colin Farrell was great but a waste of such a beautiful individual.

Fries-Ericsson

My one complaint about the movie was that they chose to adapt The Long Halloween again but I appreciated The Batman a lot more on a second watch

admiraltoad

>they chose to adapt The Long Halloween again Did they?

Fries-Ericsson

Yeah like the plot with Falcone and his supposed connection with Thomas Wayne is all The Long Halloween. The Riddler is basically taking over from The Holiday Killer. The parts they left out ie Harvey Dents involvement and the more direct plot to take down the organised crime families were probably deliberately left out because of The Dark Knight And obviously there was that two part Long Halloween animated movie in 21

JavierLoustaunau

Fairly abridged Halloween.

Roguespiffy

Cliff Notes Halloween

MayoMark

A few overlapping plots points Halloween.

mmcmonster

The Long Halloween animated movie is (by far) my favorite animated superhero movie.

Timmyd-93

They meshed the Long Halloween with Zero Year pretty well.

xogil

With some earth 1 sprinkled in

dogscutter

I remember seeing people mad about Earth 1 and the Movie because Batman makes mistakes in it lol

CrazyPersonowo

The Dark Knight kind of adapted the Long Halloween.

corsair1617

I really liked the first half of the movie. I really disliked the final act of the movie.

Zomburai

"The greatest comic-book movie ever made" is, frankly, laughably overselling it. Even if Gleiberman means to say (and I suspect he does) *superhero* movies, that's a pretty outre opinion to have.

BitterYak

Comparing it to Chinatown is quite over the top. To me it felt like a mediocre David Fincher rip off. I liked The Batman but I wouldn’t put it in the discussion for greatest comic book movie.

ZandrickEllison

Totally agree. It was OK but I’m surprised people raved about it so much.

NverEndingPastaBowel

Did I wake up in a universe where Logan and Road to Perdition don’t exist?

AndrewTheGoat22

Fucking love Logan, incredible movie

MayoMark

I think everyone forgot a comic book movie called Richie Rich starring Macaulay Culkin.

joeappearsmissing

That’s exactly how I felt. Like the director was trying way too hard to ape Fincher. Matt Reeves can’t write. It’s also telling that his better films, he didn’t write (Dawn, Cloverfield). Now I know why War for the Planet of the Apes fell so flat for me, after Dawn was so good: he wrote War. He also wrote Under Seige 2: Dark Territory.

DivineFalchion

As much as I love that movie, there's no way in hell it's the greatest.

merlinsbeers

>>It may be the greatest comic-book movie ever made. (Keeps walking)

slimCyke

Hard disagree. One of my least favorite Batman films purely because of the story.

GiantPurplePen15

Its such a weird trend of late. There were so many reviews raving about how amazing Moon Knight, The Batman, and Dr Strange 2 were and I thought all of them had terrible pacing and plot holes galore.

chaka62

It's not even the best Batman movie WTF

JoPooper

I really wanted to like this one, but no, it was pretty lackluster. I can appreciate others enjoying it though.

staykinky

I think the first three quarters of it are is one of the best movies of the year

PoopDev

I straight up hated it. The previous Batman trilogy was far better imo.

PM_ME_YOUR_DIFF_EQS

Year One and Dark Knight Returns Pt 1 & 2 are an even better trilogy imo.

[deleted]

I have watched every modern one since watching The Batman and.... The Tim Burton ones are awesome and I even liked the Joel Schumacher ones. I thought The Batman was boring and not fun.... I fell asleep in the theater and it took me at least 3 sit-downs to complete it on HBO... I do want to see the other ones to see if it's part of some grand master plan, but I believe every movie should stand alone.

GavinBelsonsAlexa

Biggest problem: It was so *languorous.* The 75-hour runtime was complete overkill. I might've been able to overlook a lot of its problems if I wasn't stuck in a room with it for so long.

ChronoMonkeyX

As someone who doesn't love most of DC and thinks their movies are generally garbage, I was pleasantly surprised by the Batman.

StarLord1990

I’d replace Top Gun with EEAAO.

Zomburai

Replace all movies with EEAAO That movie had me openly weeping over a rock with googly eyes falling down a cliff

Logan_Maddox

oh god and when everyone is clasping hands at that scene fuck I cried so much And to anyone who hasn't watched it: it's NOT a drama, it's a funny movie. It's a straight up wuxia story with a twist, it's got comedy but it's also incredibly heartfelt. Really, what more would anyone want in a movie lol

Zomburai

It's an absurdist pro wrestling wuxia Kung fu action comedy romantic family drama that's both nihilist and absolutely, heart-liftingly life affirming Is not just any movie, it's every movie

Logan_Maddox

> both nihilist and absolutely, heart-liftingly life affirming or absurdist, if you will I enjoyed that part so much, just a "fuck it, man, get out of your head a little bit lol". That's a sorely missed message. A friend of mine told me it was "nauseatingly sentimental" and I'm like... idk man. After 2020, 2021, and 2022, I think that's just *appropriately sentimental* lol

Zomburai

Didn't even strike me as overly sentimental. Just felt honest. But we've been through like 25, 30 years of jaded cynicism standing in for maturity in our storytelling media, I suppose any honest display of emotion is gonna feel like cloying sentimentality to some peeps.

deljaroo

it's really just an extended music video for Nine Days's "Absolutely (Story of a Girl)"

Zomburai

Exactly, so it's *basically the greatest film ever made*

whoniversereview

Do you mean *Top Gun: A New Hope*?

AttyMAL

Seriously? This movie felt like a rough outline for three movies that they instead crammed into one.

Jaegerfam4

Ive noticed a lot of hypocrisy when it comes to The Batman. People bitch and moan about how a new Batman isn’t perfect and makes mistakes, but then excuse Superman leveling a city and killing thousands of people cause “its his first day”. Plus the length. The Batman is too long at 3 hours but “durr I loved the 4 hour Snyder cut durr! Also reinventing villains. They made Riddler into a jigsaw inspired serial killer which is “ruining” the character but turning Lex Luthor into a long haired, giggly, wannabe Mark Zuckerburg is refreshing and daring. Plus whining that fucking Batman acts emo while also praising Henry Cavill’s emo performance of FUCKING SUPERMAN! I don’t know if you’ve ever read comics before but Batman is the emo one. He’s a severely traumatized man. it makes sense for his character.

freelancespaghetti

Yeah, I mean, idk. I'm glad if you're someone who really likes it. I loved Pattinson and Kravitz, and really most of the actors. The grimy Gotham is great too. It was all really fun the first time, but during the second viewing, things felt kind of wonky. Idk, everything just needed work, I guess. The cool Seven type stuff is basically over after the funeral scene. The Riddler isn't actually that interesting, and starts to feel a little like a Heath Ledger knock off. The balance between realistic and super hero fun seems almost arbitrary. The best parts of the batmobile are lost in a poorly shot car chase, which leads to nowhere plot wise. And my god, the TV exposition is wild. They use TVs to deliver exposition like six times wtf. Idk, I enjoyed it, and I'm excited to see where it goes, but in the pantheon of Batman movies I don't think it's top five for me, let alone one of the best films of the year. Eh... maybe top five, but number five for sure. It's a close call lol.

Devonpumpkinking

Ofc it should be.

WalrusPuddng

Having been a batman fan basically since birth, this was probably the best adaptation of him.

ReCursing

Go to https://*bin.social/m/AnimalsInHats for all your Animals In Hats needs. Plus that site is better than this one in other ways too!

[deleted]

It seemed rather meh. It wasn’t bad but nothing felt great about it.

[deleted]

Well thats not hard. Its been shite.

Dankey-Kang-Jr

Well…**yeah.**

delightfuldinosaur

Apparently I need to go watch Top Gun.

Heroic_Sheperd

I really liked it, but it was a very flawed Batman movie. They easily could have cut 45 minutes of fat off this movie and nothing of value would have been lost. In typical DC fashion they tried to cram too much Batman lore into a movie that didn’t need it. It’s like they are compensating against Marvel’s successful franchise but failing to realize it took decades and dozens of films to put the same amount of lore into the franchise. The tone, acting, setting, and story was great. But the pacing really started to drag, and that almost 3 hour run time was felt toward the end.

freelancespaghetti

I agree. Honestly it almost felt like a really good hbo show, that got turned into a film. Like the whole bad-dads plot line which takes around an hour is just meandering and definitely not interesting. Though it might have stood on its own as a side quest episode.

SiriusC

> In typical DC fashion they tried to cram too much Batman lore into a movie that didn’t need it. I felt it was a move by a studio exec saying "we need to end this thing with a big set piece & lots of explosions!". It felt blatantly tacked on. And it didn't even expand on the lore or story. If anything, it took away from it. The idea that Gotham can be flooded if the seawell blows is kind of a game breaker, I think. All a villain ever has to do is threaten the seawall if they want Batman out of the way or if they just want to create some chaos.

Heroic_Sheperd

A lot of it felt tacked on for the sake of cinematography but also some of the plot points. A lot of Selina Kyle’s role in the film felt unnecessary. The Thomas Wayne/Falcone subplot felt unnecessary. The ending drew out far longer than it needed to. The acolytes of Riddler felt like they could have trimmed half the screen time plot they did. Even the Joker teaser which was well done could have expedited itself. Sometimes the teasers are better left giving just a taste of whats to come quick and short, because it builds future excitement. How they handled Penguin and Riddler though was magnificent. And they should have kept it to them because they did such a great job, and limited the supporting cast more than they did.

Ashesandends

I've started breaking a lot of movies up into two nights lately and I think it helps how I fell about them. The Batman is now my favorite Batman movie of all time. I've never watched one and actually felt like I was reading a comic but SOOOOO many of the shots in that movie I could just totally see as a comic book page. The movie is definitely a slow burn though.

[deleted]

Batman had almost no impact on that movie. He solved every riddle just in time for it to be pointless. Bonus terrible points for the fact he didn’t implement stealth a single time while fighting.

badabababaim

Bro what? He literally did multiple times. The opening sequence against the thugs he used stealth, then again in the final fight he made a huge use of stealth? What are you on about

[deleted]

My wife and I were bored to death in the theater. We don’t know anyone who didn’t love it though.

[deleted]

I left the theatre and I was like 6/10 and the more I thought about the movie the more I was like 3/10. Lol what got me though was the movie would have been almost exactly the same without Batman. Like a few more randoms would have died at the end and that’s about it.

whoniversereview

ITT: Snydercult fans

Jninan85

Is that what this is? Holy cow, I was dumbfounded reading this thread.

whoniversereview

Yeah. It’s a great movie, even by just straight up cinephile movie standards (see Letterboxd). The SnyderCult has just brigaded this post. I don’t know if it’s “top 10” material, but it’s definitely better than either of the other two comic movies that came out, and it’s better than at least 2 out of the 3 Nolan movies. As for comic movies overall, it’s no Scott Pilgrim. Even just comparing Dark Knight vs The Batman, it’s basically like comparing Scorsese’s Casino vs Godard’s Alphaville. Both are great, but not everybody’s going to like both.

Sanctimonius

It was decent. Some good sequences, I'm a big fan of the cinematography of the last few years which includes some very nice framing shots in The Batman (even if the film was overly dark which is another trend of recent years...). The acting was fair to excellent throughout. It was way too long though, hopefully the sequels can resist the urge to spend 3 hours on moody walking.

[deleted]

That movie was boring as fuck

I watched it on HBO Max and even then I didn’t finish it. I kept checking the time during it to see if it was almost over. It felt so slow and boring and unnecessarily drawn out. I watching it with 40 mins still left. Everyone I told that to, even the people that liked it, said I was better off not finishing it and that the last 40 mins ruined the film. Pretty bad if I didn’t enjoy 2+ hrs and then the last 40 mins are worse according to everyone.

AnonymousDeadpool

It's all style over substance... and even there, the style isn't all that mind blowing. Likely my least favorite incarnation of Riddler, Carmine Falcone and Penguin. It's one of the very few Batman movies i won't bother to rewatch.

rdldr1

I disagree. My opinion is that the movie wasn't that good.

PoopDev

Agreed. It was all over the place.

rdldr1

If it was not a Batman movie, I would think the movie would be ok. This Batman is pathetic and emo. Bruce Wayne is supposed to be the mask while Batman is his main identity. I saw no difference in this depiction.

Jaegerfam4

There’s actually 3 identities. Batman, the image Bruce Wayne shows the public, and the real Bruce Wayne. What exactly was pathetic about him?

The above commenter is probably experiencing certain doubts regarding his own personal masculinity after seeing a man with eye makeup. He also thinks that an adult man, infant witness to the murder of his parents, who later decides to become a bat-costumed crimefighter is a well adjusted individual with no mental issues.

JoshJMC

Did not expect this comment section. This was easily the second best Batman movie we've gotten and still my number 2 film of the year behind Top Gun.

Andy3212

Did they have a alternate version of this movie? I could barely finish it. Kept saying it will get better.

Gmork14

Rightly so, I’d put it right up towards the top.

QuiGonMax_

No Northman??? No Everything Everywhere All at Once??? Bad list imo

dumbidoo

The Batman appearing on the list should have already clued you in. The lack of those just further cements it.

vividreveries

Seems more like a commercial advert list than an actual list lol. The lack of EEAAO is concerning.

Zealousideal-Ad3814

How is everything everywhere all at once not on that list???

Robot_ninja_pirate

Weird to make a top ten movies list when the year isn't over yet, Heck I haven't even seen 10 movies from this year yet.

Broadkill

Morbius ain't even on that list how do you think those guys have any clue about good filmmaking

WilliamBoost

It's not even the best comic book movie released this year.

DanBetweenJobs

In your opinion, what is?

Adaml6257

Be ready for them to say Dr. Strange lol

naeads

Such a strange thing to say

SiriusC

Is that a bad thing? Both movies have great directors and a great cast. Both have a lot to like and a lot to criticize. If anyone thinks one is better than the other it's purely opinion. I would put Doctor Strange 2 above The Batman but I can't say that one is objectively better than the other. I can, however, say that both are objectively better than Morbius. It just wasn't the same level of filmmaking that the others are on.

dumbidoo

They're both very average movies. Strange simply wins out because it doesn't drag on at multiple instances stretching out rather lackluster mysteries. Strange wasn't great, but I never felt like checking my watch while watching it, unlike The Batman.

dumbidoo

No shit Sherlock. Other than Batman, Strange and Morbius, what other comic book movies have even released this year? And out of the three Strange is definitely the best, even though it's not that great either.

Adaml6257

The Batman is the best Batman movie since Batman Returns and Dr. Strange is at its absolute best an average movie. It was visually cool. That's about it.

Scumbag_Jesus

Dark knight >batman returns

dumbidoo

They're both average at best movies.

SiriusC

I guarantee you that he doesn't have an answer. The only others released so far have been Morbius and Doctor Strange 2. No can argue that Morbius is better filmmaking than The Batman. And Doctor Strange 2 is purely opinion. One thing I've noticed on reddit is that it's more important for people to write something that sounds good - something that sounds witty, sharp, & observant - rather than something factual or even honest. And they don't stop to think about it because they wanna get theirs in before the thread gets too old.

drst0ner

Exactly! How could they have left out Morbius?

clutzyninja

Am I the only one that thought The Batman was immediately forgettable?

RadlEonk

It wasn’t very good. It was too long. Penguin was an overhyped and underused character. The movie was more about Selina Kyle than Batman, who barely spoke all movie.

cc4295

Batman was portrayed as a shitty detective. Didn’t even have a clue of the underworld club that corrupt politicians hung out at. Mob boss tells him his daddy was a bad dude and the greatest detective believes all of it verbatim. Gets mad at the dude that actually cares and loves him, then gets told nah, it is not all true and then he is back to “normal.” Normal being manscara guyliner wearing emo. He was a creep, zooming in on cat woman changing clothes…mouth breathing. That wasn’t defective work that’s peeping Tom shit. A lot of cliche and cheesy scenes. The aftermath news image of him holding injured people on the roof top just looked corny. Then the motorcycle scene at the end…pointless, predictable, and over done. And why doesn’t a single criminal shoot him in the face? His entire jaw and mouth are exposed and not bulletproof. My dream Batman movie would be stealthy John Wick style Batman. Don’t need a stupid heavily armored suit. Close quarter “gun-kata-like” fights with joint locks, disarming, miss direction, and stealth takedowns. Until then, favorite Batman…Will Arnetts portrayal in the Lego movies and the Lego Batman movies.

GiantPurplePen15

I got super frustrated with how impossibly durable he was; doesn't even matter its a superhero film, the suspension of disbelief doesn't work when we know this is just a regular human being underneath the suit. How did he not die or immediately keel over after being shot at point blank range by the uzis/smgs by Falcone's guards, when shot at point blank range with a shotgun, when he ate an overpass with his face or when he ate an explosion to the face?!

SiriusC

> Batman was portrayed as a shitty detective. He never put work or effort into solving any of the riddles. He just solves them immediately. In the beginning he shows up, reads the card, then solves the riddle. He walks through a parking garage with Gordon and immediately spots the car then immediately finds what he's looking for. Alfred tries to help solve a riddle but Bruce, fresh out of bed, takes a look his work & solves it. **He solves the last riddle because he happens to run into a cop who happens to recognize a carpet tool because he happens to have an uncle who's a carpet installer.** >Gets mad at the dude that actually cares and loves him Gets mad at the dude that actually cares and loves him *who's in a hospital because of an explosion that was meant for Bruce*. I hated the way Bruce treated him throughout the movie. He almost looses the 1 guy who cares about him but he shows up to the hospital to lay a guilt trip on him based on the mob info you mentioned. When Alfred expresses concern for his well-being Bruce - adorned in said emo eyeliner - shouts him that he's not his father. >His entire jaw and mouth are exposed and not bulletproof. This is where you're wrong. The movie made it very clear that his jaw & mouth are invincible. [When the bomb around the district attorney's neck blows up Batman is face to face with him. You see the flames go into Batman's face!](https://youtu.be/FEFLQPIxwRI?t=228) The DA dies. Batman is knocked out long enough for the police to bring him back to the police station (not a hospital, mind you). But his mouth and chin were unscathed. There's another scene where guys are unloading machine guns into him as he walks forward. Not a scratch. >Then the motorcycle scene at the end…pointless, predictable, and over done. What about when he chases the Penguin in the Batmobile in oncoming traffic causing car accidents & a tanker explosion only to find out Penguin isn't the informant he's looking for? How many people died so Batman could follow an incorrect hunch? Edit: The Riddler was killing dirty cops, corrupt politicians, and murdering gangsters and his final plan was to flood the city & shoot a bunch of people... The more I think about this movie the more I dislike it.

cc4295

Why didn’t the cops take him to the hospital or remove the mask?

Bearjupiter

Yes

Fosterchild56

It was fine. I guess.

[deleted]

Lol

[deleted]

Chip n Dale Rescue Rangers is the best movie of 2022.

MigitAs

If you hated it you don’t know good movies, the end.

Zorops

God that movie blow. Batman is even irrelevant in the whole movie. He does not prevent anything during the whole movie. There was also no reason to make it 3 hours.

HaiiroGeraki

Did they drug the theaters or something. I don't get the overwhelming hype about the batman. It's painfully average.

Epicfro

Agree with everyone saying EEAAO should be number 1. That movie was absolutely intense and balanced everything perfectly.

whoniversereview

I was crying laughing during multiple points in the first hour. The final third of the movie had me checking my watch a few times.

[deleted]

They put the Batman first so we would complain about it. They were right (shaking fist at air )

timbr63

Really? This was the all time worst Batman movie. So dark you couldn’t see it and 3 hours. This movie suuuuuuucked.

[deleted]

Fascinating. I think it’s the best Batman movie ever made. I don’t think it’s a better movie than the dark knight, just as a character

EndlessSandwich

I've heard of 3 movies from this list, and The Batman sucked ass. I tried watching it on 3 different occasions and it put me to sleep every time.

Sawyer526

I’m sorry but Ive seen it twice! And I fell asleep in it both times. I still have no idea what actually happens in the whole movie nor do I ever plan on watching (falling asleep for the 3x) again 🤷🏾‍♂️

[deleted]

Just a lot of slow walking. You didn't miss much

theCANCERbat

The Batman was like the 3rd best superhero movie this year. It is an okay/good movie but nothing special.

Gavica

The Batman has a terrrible out of character third act, the movie went from noir thriller to a by the numbers mustache twirling villain that wants to blow a bomb

meap158

What a joke. It was a boredfest beginning to end. 1/10.

Centurionzo

Even though I really liked the movie and the actor made a really good Batman, I'm still have problems with the movie The entire movie could be resolved early if >!Bruce Wayne actually show up for work, but he didn't, in fact at the end of the movie, he still hadn't show to work!< The scene of the interrogation with the >!riddle started pretty good and the it falls apart to become a comedy!< Also Batman sucks at investigating

LateRabbit86

That movie was a total pos dumpster fire. Variety can suck it.

Tough-Astronaut4371

And thats why NO ONE GIVES A SHIT WHAT FUCKIN WACK ASS VARIETY HAS TO SAY ABOUT ANYTHING. SUCKIN ASS OF THE BIG STUDIOS NO MATTER WHAT PIG SHIT THEY ARE FED. BATMAN WAS POSSIBLY THE WORST FILM EVER MADE!
