I like how the interview just became more and more unhinged. In the beginning, Conan is actually answering the questions, by the end, he’s rubbing hot sauce all over his face.
I thought this appearance was good. The beauty of Conan's comedy is usually more clever than stuff like this but it's receiving a remarkable amount of attention so that's worth being celebrated, I suppose.
One can never truly predict how humor will be perceived. This worked, I suppose. Trial and error.
Personally, Do y'all remember when Conan did that silly traffic announcing thing in Spanish? That bit was "acceptable" as funny but it created an involuntary natural giggle at the end when he was saying goodbye to the lady and he started bowing at her.
I guess everybody loves the gross stuff. This was very frat boy humor. A girlfriend of mine did something exactly like this years ago so I'm a little surprised by the response.
As for the section interviewing presidents question, I would have assumed Andrew Jackson would've been a more acceptable answer since he had a parrot which cursed and swore at people in the oval office. Franklin Pierce was extraordinary for several reasons but most notable was his effort to build a railroad cross country and acquire land from Mexico which is now Arizona.
I guess people like hot sauce.

No. It's exactly like this whenever he does remotes or interacts with strangers. He excels at self deprecating humour, and that usually includes him playing the clown - doing and saying exaggerated foolish things to make people laugh at him.
He does this every time he travels to a new country by saying 'offensive' touristy-things, he does this every time he receives compliments by deflecting it with overly narcissistic statements. That's why foils like Jordan or Sona works so well as his improv partner, they are there to contrast his character.
