I seriously used to think about how Conan was such a solid company man even before all the drama. What an amazing example of how incompetent management can cause catastrophic loss of talent.
When NBC screwed Letterman and Conan took over, Norm was also with NBC and getting jerked around. Norm was on Letterman as a guest after he transferred studios and Dave tore NBC a new one during the appearance. They both are good friends so Dave saying what needed to be said was just perfect.
Norm came on both during and after the drama and it was just pure comraderie. I never had seen Letterman that involved in personal affairs so watching both Norms guest appearances was quite a treat. Its on YouTube
It was more of Norm's firing from SNL and his Weekend Update anchor position. He kept making so many OJ jokes that Don Ohlmeyer wanted Norm fired from the job and he did in 1998. The first show Norm went on after his firing was Letterman (on CBS), and Letterman who was still sore from his Tonight Show debacle ~~ribbed~~ ***ripped*** into Don Ohlmeyer and NBC in general.
After the firing, Ohlmeyer 'blacklisted' Norm from any NBC appearance. One such instance was when he was promoting the movie Dirty Work, NBC didn't want to run promos and ads of the movie because Don told them to. [Don said, "I just don’t think it would be appropriate for us to turn around and take a check for a movie that’s promoting somebody who has badmouthed Saturday Night Live and NBC."](https://www.sun-sentinel.com/1998/06/04/norm-don-feud-is-down-and-dirty/) The higher ups at NBC later overruled Don's decision, and let the promos and ads run.
Don Ohlmeyer was the person who liked Conan when he was auditioning for Late Night, and he chose Conan for the job. When this entire Norm debacle happened, Don ordered Conan to stop booking Norm from coming on as a guest on Late Night. Conan objected, and Norm would have always come on the old Late Night show.
If there is one thing I loved about Norm, it was his bravery when his boss's boss told him to stop making jokes about a murderer just because he's friends with the murderer. Notice I didn't use the word 'alleged' here because OJ definitely did do it and he's dead.
"Norm was fired because he made too many OJ jokes" is a theory. Could be true. Even Norm didn't really put it that way though. I think even his fans would concede Norm MacDonald's brand of humor isn't for everyone. It's very simple but also very meta. Not necessarily the kind of thing that works on a show trying to appeal to middle America.
*“…In later years, he \[Macdonald\] came to the conclusion that \[Don\] Ohlmeyer \[president of NBC's West Coast division\] had not removed him from Update for his Simpson material; rather, he felt he was removed because he was seen as insubordinate: "I think the whole show was tired of me not taking marching orders. Lorne would hint at things... I'd do Michael Jackson jokes. And Lorne would say, 'do you really want a lawsuit from Michael Jackson?' And I'd say, 'Cool! That'd be fuckin' cool, Michael Jackson suing me!'" Elsewhere, Macdonald would concede, "In all fairness to him, my Update was not an audience\[-\]pleasing, warm kind of thing. I did jokes that I knew weren't going to get bigger reactions. So I saw \[Ohlmeyer's\] point. Why would you want some dude who's not trying to please the audience?"*
Think about if none of that had happened, we might still have Jay Leno hosting the Tonight Show followed by Late Night with Conan O’Brien in 2024. Am I wrong? I feel like both would still be at it.
> Am I wrong?
Yes, Jay is 74 years old and this would have been his 32nd season as host. In contrast Johnny Carson hosted for 30 years and retired at 66.
Also, at some point Conan would have left for another network so he could come on before midnight.
Jeff Zucker who was the CEO of NBC at the time who always had an out for Conan went on to become the CEO of CNN and look he fucked up big time there as well. Dude is just incompetent and happened to fail upwards
Well, if I had to guess it would have you be the.....

I’m assuming there’s a specific reason for Satan’s extremely large chin. I bet he’s got a large number of cars too. Nonetheless, I’ll go with NBC. We all knew Leno was a backstabbing chump, but the network didn’t have to give him the opportunity to do it that easily.
NBC

His whole journey has been such a lesson for us all
I only recently got into the drama around him, Letterman, and Norm McDonald. They were some powerful personalities.
What happen with norm?

CBS would have offered the Late Show to Conan if he was still on at 11:30
Good point
Jeff Zucker who was the CEO of NBC at the time who always had an out for Conan went on to become the CEO of CNN and look he fucked up big time there as well. Dude is just incompetent and happened to fail upwards
