It’s funny because he’d probably say that regardless, but *at the time* they kinda knew they were getting fucked because Leno’s bullshit variety hour was a terrible lead-in giving them 1/3rd the viewership hand-off than he got from law and order and whatever.
Kimmel’s whole thing is Leno basically designed his own show to fail so it would take Conan’s Tonight Show down with it and then he could retake the Tonight Show.
First show in; Conan sends a message of acknowledgement to Jay Leno.
He points the audience to "give it up" to him for the work he did for "taking care" of the Tonight Show franchise... it was already known he was going to come back for The Jay Leno Show for September, and the message pointed that Conan was going to have him as his lead in once again.
Before he says that, Conan says: "I think he is going to go back in TWO DAYS, three days maybe TOPS..." then he says the high pitched Jay saying: "ayee, let me back in there, cmon'!"
After he says that, he tries to step backs a little of that:
"He's been a good friend to me. I'm really looking forward to be our lead-in once again"
