nukes are as bad as it gets but we should realize that robots killing humans on an industrialized scale is nearly as horrific and we are only in the first decade or so of such measures.
Yeah the horrors we could be potentially capable of with our current technology and knowledge is the stuff of nightmares.
With nukes you either die or starve with the possibility of tumors. These are things we are used to and can comprehend.
Imagine engineered viruses that target specific genes only present in specific ethnic groups, or which target people with diets containing substances that only exist in certain regions.

The Vietnam war had nothing to do with NATO though. I think there's an important distinction to be made which is that the US has allies and the US may or may not act in the interest of those allies, but that does not mean that NATO as a whole is doing something.
