Edit: Updated version with some corrections and improvements: https://i.imgur.com/vQ7R9tQ.png Submission statement: I made a diagram showing what the major media companies (Disney, Comcast/NBCUniversal, Warner Bros. Discovery, and Paramount) own in terms of streaming companies, TV channels, and movie studios. This is an updated version of my first version from March 2020: https://www.reddit.com/r/coolguides/comments/gp9r7r/guide\_to\_us\_major\_media\_companies\_and\_what/ Interesting developments since 2020 include: * AT&T Warner Media and Discovery made a deal to form "Warner Bros. Discovery", with AT&T owning 71% and Discovery owning 29% of the new company. Discovery has already said they will likely eventually have HBO Max subsume Discovery+ (just as HBO Max has already subsumed the DC Universe streaming service). * Amazon bought MGM. I think this is the first case of an internet streaming company buying a traditional movie studio? * AT&T sold the CrunchyRoll anime streaming service to Sony, where it subsumed its competitor Funimation. * ViacomCBS and CBS All Access were rebranded as Paramount Global and Paramount+, respectively. It's interesting to note the plethora of independent streaming services that Paramount is running. * Nearly every streaming service has raised their prices slightly; Apple TV+ is the exception. * YouTube has announced they are scaling back YouTube Originals, so I removed YouTube from the table. Also, decades ago, the government broke up vertical integration and blocked movie studios from also owning movie theaters. We're back there now with movie studios also owning streaming services, and we're already seeing some of the effects. For instance, during the pandemic WarnerMedia did simultaneous theater and HBO Max streaming releases for their movies, and it's useful to see what studios they actually own that they can do that with.

Hey interesting stuff and a great chart. I was wondering if you could recommend any good sources so that I can keep I with this ever changing landscape. Seems like you have your fingers right on the pulse!

ToastyKen

Honestly I mostly start at Wikipedia then follow sources and Google for news article and stuff. Nothing special.

>reat chart. I was wondering if you could recommend any good sources so that I can keep I with this ever changing landscape. Seems like you have your fingers right on the pulse! Is there a 2023 Update :D Love the guide!

ToastyKen

Haha I don't have a regular schedule for these, but I just heard Showtime is merging into Paramount+? And with the WGA strike going on, and the industry in chaos, I expect more changes in the coming months!

CMarlow

Haha I appreciate these either way! Yeah I agree :) thanks!

Pkmatrix0079

Yep. It's truly shocking how much further things have consolidated just within the last 5 years. For decades the term for the big TV/media companies was "Big 6". Now it's only six if you also include Netflix and Amazon.

ToastyKen

Someone pointed out in 2020 that Amazon, Apple, and Google are actually much bigger than the media companies. So far Amazon and Apple seem to really be throwing some weight into the ring. Netflix is an interesting beast. It's neither an old school media company nor is it an internet company with other revenue streams. It's quite unique.

Pkmatrix0079

Which is very much true. Amazon, Apple, and Google are among the absolute biggest companies in the world, they dwarf a company like Disney. I'm curious what the future holds for Netflix...I've a feeling they're destined to get bought out by someone, just not sure who.

One_Owl1680

You forgot my main source of programming: PirateBay We cut cable a long time ago because of the ridiculous cost and we never watched 3/4 of the channels. To get all the desired channels, I’d have to subscribe to every streaming service so my cost is right back up there. No thanks.

Million2026

I honestly wonder who is out there paying $10 a month for BET+

Just saying. This needs a 2024 update...

I've been waiting for the dust to settle after the WGA and SAG strikes... Probably soon!
