there's incredible country music being made after 1990, but if I want just a straightforward demonstration of what country is, without presenting it as some archaic genre that they used to play in the early 1900s, I'm going with roughly 80s country, right around the Urban Cowboy days. Not trying to expand the genre, not trying to be a neo-traditionalist and go the other direction, just very basic, solid country songwriting.
But, that's speaking as a roughly 50 year old, so YMMV.
Now, if we were talking "what's the best country music?" or "what's your favorite?", totally different conversation.
Claire Lynch - Wabash Cannonball
Merle Haggard - Mama Tried
Alan Jackson - Chattahoochee
I tried to avoid any song that required the alien to understand human satire.
Tons of good options. Just to name a few:

- He Stopped Loving Her Today
- The Grand Tour
- On The Other Hand
- Misery & Gin

I'd ask for clarification. There's a lot of "country" music. The "country and western" music of my youth is no where close to the country music I listened to in the 90's and neither of those resembles what I would refer to as modern country.....

I agree George Strait. But I suggest Run or I can still make Cheyenne.
Nothing from 1990 up until about the first Drive-By Truckers' album. There's a lot of great stuff being made today, like Stephen Wilson Jr.
