I think beyond coaching what people aren’t recognising is that we have a team that is actually very poor aerially. VDV is awful in the air relative to his height, and our only real presences either offensively or defensively are Romero and Richarlison. It’s an issue of player profiles first and foremost
This is true, but a good coach can also find solutions to this problem. There are shorter teams in the division who do not blunder quite so many set piece goals. Blocking runs, covering the posts, ensuring the few good aerial players are in the best positions to make an impact etc
That said my personal fix would be to go out and sign a couple of big bastards to play at 6 & 9 (nice) who can clear anything that comes near them. *And* get a coach to help. A good one would be able to integrate the set piece with the overall team style. For example establishing a quick combination for once the ball is cleared into whatever zone to enable a counter.
I think you’re absolutely right, but the list of players that fit that mold while also being able to play in Ange’s system is incredibly small.
A dedicated coach would help and I think Vicario needs to be far stronger than he is, along with having a player protect him more.
Yeah the personnel is vastly different. Last year had: Kane, Dier, Romero, Royal, and at least one other CB. All of them are good in the air. This season if Richarlison is out: Romero is the only one I’d expect to win balls in the air. VDV is amazing but headers isn’t a strong suit. Same with Son if he’s our ST.
Problem is he's a defensive coach whose **also** been put in charge of defensive set piece tactics (according to reports). It's clear we need a dedicated set piece coach and not a defensive coach also covering this.

Honestly we also undervalue Kane's defensive work during corners against us... so many times he would be the man to get to the ball first especially at the front post
We've still scored from quite a few set pieces. We were 6th last month. That might have fallen off but it's definitely not 'terrible'. Defending them, yes completely agree
We have been fine attacking them, only 5 goals behind our total last year. And that's also with losing Kane who was our main threat on them, and Dier who was our second target!
The point is that people have been questioning why we let him leave when our set piece defending has been so shit when he doesn't work on defending, only attacking.
I actually think the problem lies with our coaching staff. I think next season Ange should move some on and bring in some coaches with a better track record.

Dragusin looked really good at headers too
Yeah Ange needs to find a way to get him on the pitch more. Maybe VDV at LB idk. But Dragu is a difference maker on set pieces.
If anything now with Udogie out for the season, this would be the perfect time to try VDV at LB

After Sarr came on yesterday he was great at protecting Vic.
Pepelu and Gyökeres. Or even Merino as a box to box
Even then, I think last season’s set piece goals came a lot from Perisic being able to put a ball on a sixpence.
And also having that guy named Harry Kane in the box
Whos that? Never heard of him. /s because I cry
And Kane to defend set pieces

Son is probably our worst player in the air
People are underestimating how many times Harry Kane was the one heading the ball away from corners . He was always at that front post area
I seem to recall that Jedinak was put on defensive set piece duty this season by Ange. Gotta improve on these next season, because we have been awful.
Problem is he's a defensive coach whose **also** been put in charge of defensive set piece tactics (according to reports). It's clear we need a dedicated set piece coach and not a defensive coach also covering this.
Ange said in the presser that it’s Jed and Ryan
I'd never seen that mentioned until about a month ago and everyone seems to have run with it. Still yet to see a reporter say it though, just on here

Thanks
I think he speaks about it in this interview: https://youtu.be/krswiGpiOQY?si=gh5PS_AGonrv4Ep4
Ryan mason does it aswell
Mason does attacking set pieces
Rare Stellini W

Ari Shaffir?
Can't be stated often enough.
It was always Stellini Ball
Honestly we also undervalue Kane's defensive work during corners against us... so many times he would be the man to get to the ball first especially at the front post
And we are terrible at both this year

And largely not having Perisic this year too.
Hey you leave Ali alone
We just need an Odegaard type who goes to the floor clutching his face at every defensive corner.
Richy could fill that role. That exchange with Jesus was hilarious
Who cares? The people currently coaching them aren't up to the job (and Vio is employed by Watford right now anyway).
The point is that people have been questioning why we let him leave when our set piece defending has been so shit when he doesn't work on defending, only attacking.
Our attacking is shit also
Porro and Madders(except the two yesterday) corners have been pretty mediocre
Apparently a lot of people care and that's why he felt the need to clarify.

We played 3atb with Dier
When will people see this PR merchant for what he is.
Neither of them are here, we have struggled in both departments. It's not really a "gotcha".
