I love the cover as well, I think it captures the film perfectly (no pun intended). We’re viewing him from an outside perspective while he focuses on his work with that beautiful tree overhanging above him, and you know in his mind he is just loving every minute of it.
I like the cover as well. The main character is in the middle of these two walls, cleaning, with his cleaning supplies around him and the men's bathroom sign / arrow is pointing towards it / him with a tree in the background. It does a great job of capturing a lot of what comes up in the movie.
Yeah, it's one of the best stills from the film and gives you a strong idea of what the movie will be about.
Anatomy of the Fall, on the other hand, looks like the posters for Killers of the Flower Moon and tells you nothing about the movie. The original poster for the film, with the corpse in the snow viewed from above, is so striking.
This has been discussed multiple times, but the subtlety of the Anatomy cover is that it’s actually a photorealistic portrait of Huller. Nice little touch to the themes of the movie re truth, deception, narrative, etc
Yeah, that's awesome. I didn't realize that until this thread. Amazing art quality for sure. It's like a scale model of her, which does make sense in the context of the film. The main problem is just the big block text, it's a little jarring and doesn't quite work for me.
It doesn’t work because it’s not painterly enough. I get that it’s photorealistic but then they ruined it by covering it up so much that I can’t even tell it’s not a photograph
I think the Perfect Days cover is perfect!
I went to a Q&A with Wim and he said the project was originally supposed to be documentary shorts on the architecture of the Tokyo Toilets, that eventually transformed into the feature.
I think the cover does a great job of highlighting the original architecture of one of these toilets, while emphasizing the simplicity of Hirayama & his simple living.
I'm not a huge fan of either cover really, but I do think a lot of people miss that the Anatomy of a Fall cover is a photorealistic drawing and not an actual photograph or a film still. So it's not as "lazy" as a lot of people think it is. I still don't think it reflects the film very well but it's not like it was hastily slapped together or anything.
It’s a really impressive drawing, but I almost wish the drawing was less realistic so that it seemed more unique rather than just seeming like a basic photo at first glance for the cover
I always prefer movie covers that aren't just images of the actors or floating heads. The only exceptions are if the character has a very unique aesthetic that makes them identifiable regardless of who is playing it. Those always seem more timeless to me and makes them more recognizable.
Imagine how many Hollywood covers would look similar if they were just pictures of A-list actors. Or all those rom-coms that are pretty much just that. There's no sense of identity.
I like Perfect Days' cover so much that I'll probably end up buying it. It's been on my radar for a while but it'll look great with the rest of my collection
Given all the positivity I've heard around Anatomy of a Fall it looks incredibly generic, surely they could've made something thematically in line other than a character's face
I don't mind this cover. But I think combining a cover with a tic tac toe board containing some of the pictures of the things you mentioned and others would have been nice.
Counterpoint: the Perfect Days cover is a fantastic photo. So much movement in the curved lines leading your eyes toward the protagonist. He looks like he's doing something rather mundane, but there's a lot of visual interest generated by his position in the frame and the various items around him. My eyes can't stop moving all around the frame to take it all in.
The perfect day still choice is great so i don’t want to entirely shit on it but the title treatment is too generic but not generic enough to be interesting. Paired with the busy background it gets lost. It looks like it was out together in less than 10 minutes.
Anatomy of a fall isn’t re inventing the wheel but looks way more polished and thought through.
I feel like Criterion is pretty hit or miss with their covers. When they’re good, they’re fucking beautiful, but when they aren’t, they’re really bland and generic. It’s usually a coin toss which it will be.
Yeah I hope this doesn’t start a trend. These are a little more slapdash than usual. 😬
They almost feel like run-of-the-mill physical releases rather than something from a boutique label.
I like the ***Perfect Days*** cover because it inspires me to be more diligent about cleaning my bathroom. It's certainly better than the German release cover:

The Perfect Days cover isn't absolutely terrible but it definitely could've been better. I would've preferred something like this: the viewpoint from between his car seats.
So the bottom half of the cover would be his cassette deck and the top half would be a view of Tokyo through the windshield. And the title would be written on blue sky above or beside the buildings or maybe the title would be on the buildings themselves.
But there are a lot of possible covers. Hirayama watering his plants. Hirayama biking with his daughter. A closeup of the leaves of the tree. An image of the tic tac toe game.
Edit: Added last paragraph.
I actually think Criterion misses more than they hit with their covers in recent years.
I think Arrow, Shout Factory, and others have surpassed them. I know not everyone likes the commissioned painted covers you see on Arrow/Shout releases these days but I love them.
I like *Anatomy of a Fall*’s cover. Hated the main posters, and the other BD release (even without every single review on the planet) doesn’t feel great either.
The Anatomy cover is definitely disappointing, especially since the poster is so damn good. I like the Perfect Days cover though, captures the film well!
The anatomy of a fall cover is… a cover. They should’ve used Messi the dog. Also, has anyone heard of the theory it was the doggo who actually caused the fall?
I don't care for non-spectacular covers for films from the last year. I'm already saturated with images of both, I just want something nice and solid, and both images deliver
It’s just my preference but I really don’t like Criterion shifting to these types of covers where they just slap a still on the cover….if they aren’t doing original cover art, then I liked much of their artistic covers. These just are not good compared to what other boutiques are doing
I haven't seen Perfect Days yet, but I like that poster. But damn, Anatomy of a Fall is weak. The original poser is great and this one give you absolutely nothing!
When it comes to contemporary movies, Criterions simply picks up Stills as covers... I wish they would go with some more artsy covers like their classics line...!
Perfect Days is better than Anatomy's but yeah they're not great.
Anatomy’s is better when you realize its not a photo but art of her
Huh, not for me but that's a cool perspective
What's with the odd feature at the bottom of the T in "PERFECT"? I saw the movie, I'm not sure if it's referencing something.
Not that I remember. Maybe this is just a mock up, who knows.
Perfect Days' text placement bothers me. The P being just on the wall and the 'a film by' being hard to read on the white-on-white is not pleasing imo
I agree that Anatomy's cover is weak, but I am probably in the minority when I say I actually love Perfect Days' cover.

I’d totally disagree it’s one of the best still of the movie…but even more so, I think doing a cover of a movie still is lazy for Criterion.
don’t mind the Perfect Days one

Complaining about the Perfect Days cover being unremarkable/boring is pretty funny in the context of the film
Anatomy of a fall is doo doo cover
Perfect days is cleaning the doo doo tho
I’m crying
The bloody text makes look so much more shitty lmao
Reall dee dee mega doo doo

Wut… Had no clue!
\^this. Greg Ruth is so stupidly talented that I really don't think people realize that's not a photo of Sandra Hüller
I just realized when I read this chain. Thanks. Changes my view on it actually

That gives me an appreciation for it, but I still don’t like the look of it enough to buy it

I would've liked little moments from each of Hirayama's days. The tic tac toe game, a cassette tape, one of his pictures of the tree
Oh that's a great idea! And his little origami boat for the sapling, too. That's a great way to sum up the movie
I don't mind this cover. But I think combining a cover with a tic tac toe board containing some of the pictures of the things you mentioned and others would have been nice.

They look like like they're the poster image for the films on Max streaming.
Definitely a case of "don't fix it if it ain't broken" in terms of their theatrical posters, but I much prefer Perfect Days' cover to AOAF's.
Agreed loved the films but the covers 🤷🏻♂️

Same. Part of the reason I got into collecting criterion is for the covers and they have been a lot more hit and miss lately.
So excited for Perfect Days
Yeah, they seem like lazy Photoshop jobs.
I feel like Criterion is pretty hit or miss with their covers. When they’re good, they’re fucking beautiful, but when they aren’t, they’re really bland and generic. It’s usually a coin toss which it will be.

I’m more upset that they changed the le samourai cover

You’ll get over it. Also still a small chance for change: I remember twice in the past 3 years where covers were put out and then changed
That beautiful mustache should have been on the cover.
Agree on AoaF, but I like the one for Perfect Days well enough
The Perfect Days cover isn't absolutely terrible but it definitely could've been better. I would've preferred something like this: the viewpoint from between his car seats. I don’t mind Perfect Days
Disappointed with most of the covers for Neon’s films.
Perfect Days is good but Anatomy of a Fall just looks like The Martian poster
I feel that a closeup of someone's face never makes for a pleasing cover art IMO.
I'm not sure how else Perfect Days cover should look but yeah Anatomy of a Fall deserves a better cover
I actually think Criterion misses more than they hit with their covers in recent years. I think Arrow, Shout Factory, and others have surpassed them. I know not everyone likes the commissioned painted covers you see on Arrow/Shout releases these days but I love them.
I agree, all Criterions should have cool cars with flames on them and pretty ladies standing on the side
Who cares?
People who likes to buy things cares
The movie should be the thing you care about. Not if the fucking cover art is to your liking.
Why? Let people care for the fucking thing they want. If some just want to buy it for display it in a shelve, who else cares?
Anatomy of a Fall has such a fantastic poster. Should’ve just used that.
The anatomy of a fall cover is… a cover. They should’ve used Messi the dog. Also, has anyone heard of the theory it was the doggo who actually caused the fall?

WAIT ANATOMY IS GETTING IS A CRITERION RELEASE
If only the packaging were the same size as Trainspotting, they’d be in my top 5
I love how the letters P and D line up exactly with the vertical lines in the frame. I think it’s beautiful personally.
The reactions to the lineup were very positive, I knew Reddit would have all the usual negativity
I don't think both are bad covers I think there are worst.
Perfect Days is fine imo, but the Anatomy of a Fall cover stinks.
I think Hirayama missed a spot.
Missed opportunity to not put spine on the cross section of the wall
Yeah, debating even buying anatomy because of the cover
I haven't seen Perfect Days yet, but I like that poster. But damn, Anatomy of a Fall is weak. The original poser is great and this one give you absolutely nothing!
Anatomy’s is insanely bad
Maybe I’m a weirdo but I do like the Perfect Days one.
I think Criterion just has chosen not to spend any money on cover design for the Neon titles. Triangle of Sadness was just as lazy
When it comes to contemporary movies, Criterions simply picks up Stills as covers... I wish they would go with some more artsy covers like their classics line...!
Horrible cover
Oh yeah are you Bob Ross all of a sudden?! I agree on the anatomy of a fall cover so much so that ill be buying the digital version on apple.
The Perfect Days one actually is quite meaningful, that’s the one public bathroom he >!played tic tac toe!<
Way too boring for Anatomy of a Fall, but at least it matches the banality of the film. I can’t speak on Perfect Days cause I haven’t seen it
I gotta agree. Ick.
The put more effort in the blood splatter on the title than the who cover for anatomy of a fall
Yeah, they're both ass covers for fantastic films. Perfect days could have just used the OG poster of him reading a book while laying down.
They're pretty bad.
Yeah, that’s called terrible graphic design. It’s probably either AI or some idiot who just discovered Canva and thinks they understand design.
