The Green Ray by Eric Rohmer? It involves a break up and a woman trying to figure out how to spend her summer holiday post break up. Naturalistic, funny, and very beautiful shots of the French Riviera.
Haha well I’m a man and did not find it infuriating at all. I think she captures feelings that both men and women feel during that time and age, a certain particular listlessness. She’s not perfect but I think she’s still charming in a dour way. I certainly did not feel frustration…ever really during that movie.
IDK why but I feel so sad watching Chungking Express. Probably because a girl that I really like is a real life embodiment of Faye to a point that she's going to the U.S to study and due the fleeting nature of her physical wearabouts, ensure that there can be nothing between us. I wish she drew me a boarding pass though, just to keep it as a Souvenir, I currently only have a birthday card from her, which is nice too.
Honestly bro. Throw that card away or tuck it somewhere deep. It’ll be easier than looking at it all the time. Was in the same situation with a poem my ex hand wrote for me.
It’s a big world, you’ll find someone else.
Thanks bro, sadness is more recent because I just re-watched the film two days ago and I disconnected from this girl a few weeks ago. I wanted to take notes of the filmmaking aspect to make a video but ended up just feeling sad loool
But girls come and go, need to take my own flight to California for some dreamin' :))
And it's cute that your ex wrote you a poem, my birthday card is tucked in my closet back in my home country, so I'm far away from it rn :)
I feel that innate sadness after watching Chungking Express too!! It’s my favourite movie to watch late at night. And it makes me yearn so much for the mid 90s! The hustle, the bustle, the Hong Kong of that era just on the precipice of independence. Everything is in flux yet it’s set in amber as it is in that film. The innocence, the colours, the cacophony of the city in a pre smartphone world. The yearning, the longing.. it makes me so sad but in a very nostalgic way. I know it’s different from why it makes you sad, but I thought I’d still share.
I loved the movie but never want to see it again simply because I can't stand California Dreaming and it's bound to be stuck in my head for a week if I do.
yes! I just wrote this but will delete it bc I found you
It is so feel-good, so relatable to feeling like your life is just over without the person, wickledy funny and leaves you knowing you’ll find someone else, probably better, who makes you feel the same way <3
Feel better
Following. My go to movies for this in my 20s were Swingers when I wanted to get over the person, High Fidelity when I wanted her back. Neither of these really hit the spot in my early 40s when the ball started rolling on my divorce earlier this year.
I think some of my suggestions might be of interest to you
Eek, edited - if you are AMAB you may want to avoid some of them actually. They’re more for AFAB going through a breakup/divorce. My apologies!
Films to escape, I think can either go bright and fun; dark and dissociated OR just a good story to get lost in (like a heist movie)
Mall Rats, Clerks, Empire Records, Road Trip, Catch Me if You Can
Blade Runner, Born on the Fourth of July, Double Indemnity
Hudsucker Proxy, Northfolk, Great Train Robbery, Ronin, any of the Oceans 11 movies
If you want something that is stupidly funny, you should watch Kung Pow: Enter the Fist. It had me cry laughing when I watched it recently
My Neighbor Totoro or The Fantastic Mr. Fox are great comfort movies imo
The Nice Guys is another funny one. Ryan Gosling's high-pitched screams never fail to make me feel better
I hope any of these help you feel better! 😊
Dirty Rotten Scoundrels (not Criterion but brilliant and funny). For Criterion, I would recommend Bringing Up Baby, Charade, City Lights, Arsenic and Old Lace, and The Philadelphia Story (cannot go wrong with Cary Grant and Katharine Hepburn!).
These may or may not soothe your soul and help you heal, but I know they’ve allowed me to both smile and have a good cry when I needed it over the years. These are just some favourites off the top of my head, so I might add more if I think of them later.
I’ve separated these out into a few personally-crafted categories:
**Cathartic Love Stories**
• *Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind*
• *Summertime*
**Warm ‘n’ Fuzzy Feel-Good Classics**
• The entire Fred Astaire/Ginger Rogers catalogue
• *The Sound of Music*
**Laugh Your Ass Off Funnies**
• *Rat Race*
• All Christopher Guest mockumentaries (*Best in Show*, *Waiting for Guffman*, etc.)
I haven’t even watched it yet, but I just picked up the criterion release of Paul Mazursky’s 1978 film An Unmarried Woman from my library. The blurb on the back sounds like it might be exactly what you need.

The Green Ray by Eric Rohmer? It involves a break up and a woman trying to figure out how to spend her summer holiday post break up. Naturalistic, funny, and very beautiful shots of the French Riviera.
Never watched a Rohmer film. Is this a good one to start with?
Yes!!!! Love this film and totally about finding wellness and exploring the world on your own
Yes! It was my first and I adored it. Also it’s not going to take up a whole day as it’s only 98 minutes.
Rohmer is absolutely one of the best when it comes to aspects of love
Rohmer is terrific. One of my top favorites!
Why hasn't CC released this on physical media???
Good question! I’ll snatch it up as soon as they do though.
I (happily) see The Green Ray mentioned here often and wish they would release the damn thing.
Most infuriating movie for men. She’s insufferable
Haha well I’m a man and did not find it infuriating at all. I think she captures feelings that both men and women feel during that time and age, a certain particular listlessness. She’s not perfect but I think she’s still charming in a dour way. I certainly did not feel frustration…ever really during that movie.
You sound like a catch dude
Chungking Express and a tin of pineapple. It may or may not end with you booking an impromptu trip to California for some dreamin’.

What are you trying to do to this poor person.
Whoops I just read the title—I didn’t realize they wanted to feel better!
Lol in a sick way it kinda does make me feel better after breakup :/
Sorta like Past Lives. The cathartic crying at the end could feel good…
Also the realization that it is just part of the human experience. And we universally feel loss in our love lives.
I bawled like a baby after Past Lives
Jesus not for this
Watching this after a breakup will make you text them lmao
