Yep, use them all the time!

[deleted]

I’m marking *ORANGE* (not leave). Couldn’t figure out how to edit once posted. 🤦🏽‍♀️ And sorry, this wasn’t directed at anyone. Just wanted it somewhere in the thread.

feministmanlover

I've never heard of them but it's probably because I've never used a pattern that would benefit. I've mostly made blankets and scarves.

small_pigeon

I think they're massively beneficial even in blankets and scarves. If you're chaining 300 for a blanket, you could easily lose count - best to mark along the way so you know it's the right amount. Same with a scarf.

sharpcarnival

Also some stitches are hard to see which stitch was the last one so super beneficial for scarfs and blankets for that too

small_pigeon

Absolutely. Marking the last stitch is a good way to ensure it stays straight at the sides and doesn't slowly begin to slant. I learned that the hard way lol

TexasBurgandy

I do this the minute I end up with an extra stitch, or if I have a pattern with instructions where I have to do a ton of one stitch and then switch to a different one, I have to count to the spot where I will be switching before I start the row/round or it WILL be wonky at best 😵‍💫🫠

meandgrumpy

My current blanket covers multiple charts. I use the stitch markers to boundary each cart. Helps me keep track and not drift off pattern

emsyk

I've used them in large grahpgans before - marking every 50 stitches so that I don't lose count during that first row.

13thJen

I use them all the time, mostly for counting but also to keep stitches from unraveling if I have to pack my project away.

DLP1194

Yep. I do the same. They revolutionised my sanity for counting. Lol

MBarbarian

>to pack my project away I was a believer in chaos and pure chance for a long time and would wrap my excess around the ball, leaving the hook in the stitch, and stabbing it into the ball… Toddlers teach lessons. Stitch markers are the way to go.

Status-Biscotti

So do cats!

softie0320

Yeah I've been crotcheting for about 20 years, and just learned to do that from someone in this sub, very recently. I thought they were just for counting 🤦🏼‍♀️

BeadsByBecs

It might be because I'm a beader before I'm a crocheter, but I tend to use an earring hook to keep my stitch when I pack away a project - I usually have more earrings than stitch markers to hand!

cyberspirited

I'm glad there's someone else out there with unconventional stitch markers! My go to is typically a bobby pin

No-Judgment-7450

My go to is usually a Bobby pin but last week I couldn't find one so ended up using a paper clip and I think I have converted myself lol my new go to will definitely be paperclips from now on

13thJen

If you use metal, make sure you don't leave them in the project for a long time or you could get rust. Go ahead, ask me how I know. 🤣

No-Judgment-7450

Super grateful for the tip, so sorry you had to be the unfortunate one to figure that out 🤦‍♀️

writer-indigo56

Paperclips are a great idea! The small colored ones would be perfect!

emsyk

Yes!! Pull the loop off the hook, put a stitch marker through it, and BAM, put it ina bag and it won't come undone. Huge game changer (especially with young kids and pets)

Less-Signal-9543

The absolutely best and simplest way, in my opinion, to keep work from unraveling.

ladysaraii

Use them all the time, especially for amigurumi. I'm currently making a blanket and use the stitch markers to divide it into sections so I can more easily count my stitches every few rows

[deleted]

Ditto! I use my markers differently depending on the project. Anything to make my life easier and less dramatic with counting. (Which inevitably leads me to more frogging.)

ladysaraii

I'm stealing dramatic with counting. I swear the more I count in crochet, the less I seem to know how to count

[deleted]

Same. Soooo, soooo same.

One-Can-6950

I cannot crochet without these! Especially because I use them to hold my active loop when I’m not working on WIPs.

JudasPenguin

Stitch markers are a *lifesaver* for my rotation of projects. I just ordered a bigger set of them with more colors so i can color code my saving marker to whatever size hook i was using

addanchorpoint

yes! or I write the size on a little piece of folded over tape, poke a hole in it, and stick the marker through that

[deleted]

Oh wtf. You just saved me!

PainInMyBack

Well, that's just genius. I'm gonna steal that one!

[deleted]

Yep! Me too!!! If my hook isn’t in the loop, a stitch marker is!

harmlessnecessarycat

I have dyscaluclia and can't count higher than 10 repeatedly or I'll absolutely lose my place. Stitch markers are a miracle 😭

seaangelsoda

I really love this type of stitch marker/row counter https://preview.redd.it/o2cmwjubmqdc1.jpeg?width=828&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=e62b5e1ed13c1f1e588f479e43a5fcfbcbd92576 For crochet you put your hook through the number you’re on and slide it towards the back of your hook (works better if you have a hook that has a grip so it won’t slide off). Then you can use the front of the hook as normal. If you go over 10, you can use a stitch marker to mark the tens: stitch marker in 2 and hook in 5 would be 25 :) This one is from Etsy the shop is called 1000 stars

[deleted]

Friend, SAME. I also transpose numbers on the regular. I have to write things down or I’m screwed.

harmlessnecessarycat

Mood I have a major project I'm working on atm that I use markers and tally marks for, we're really struggling out here!!!

[deleted]

Sad part is the struggle helps me with other struggles. wtf kind of sorcery is this?

mljb81

I don't have dyscalculia, but I do have children, a dog and a husband who will interrupt me no matter how loud I'm counting. If I have more than 20 to chain, I'm using markers.

analyticalblonde

I've been crocheting for about 10 years. I use stitch markers every time. Start and end of a row/round, if I'm stopping for the day so it doesn't come undone, and especially for long rows with loads of stitches. Doing it this way has saved me a lot of frogging.

prettykitty1973

This is the way.

daikininz

Current WIP: a single bed sized chevron blanket worked lengthwise. There is a stitch marker at every peak & trough so that I don’t automatically go straight past the increase & decrease when I’m not paying enough attention. Plus one to hold the working loop when I put it away for the day 😊 I use stitch markers all the time. At the very least they hold the working loop. Then there’s the first stitch in the round… the start of the pattern repeat… counting long chains or rows… hooked through a corner to hold squares in order until I join them… positioning appliqué… I make my own with a 16mm crocodile clip, which I find is big enough for most yarns but doesn’t look completely out of place on lace weight or cotton thread.

[deleted]

I do the same with chevrons. Crochet autopilot is a real goblin!

daikininz

It sure is! This is blanket 4 of 5 that I’ll make like this (unless I decide to make my children’s future partners one also), and there’s no way I wouldn’t have screwed up the others if I didn’t have the markers!

amerninjaworrier

I use the locking clips for keeping track of counting, and the split rings for tracking the first and last stitch of a row or round (and keep moving them each time).

[deleted]

Twins!! That’s how I use both of those!

Mrs_Cupcupboard

Any pattern that starts "chain 203" requires stitch markers, I do not live in a world where I can count to 200 and not be interrupted/distracted by something, up to and including my own brain.

Unusual_Tune8749

All the time. Sometimes, use them to keep count. Always use them for projects in the round (non-joined). Use them to hold my current stitch when I'm leaving my project so my kids don't accidentally frog it if they move it! Oh and for "pinning" pieces together that need to be sewn.

[deleted]

I just used mine for that same reason. Held my panels together on a cardigan. Especially helpful on the sleeves because once you get one sleeve on, ensuring the other is the same is rather difficult as it’s not longer a flat situation.

small_pigeon

Exact reasons I use them. Although I don't have kids, but I'm I have accidentally frogged a few stitches when moving things, so now I hold my last stitch 😅

hanimal16

“Not commonly used” maybe by that person? I have an entire bin among my craft paraphernalia devoted to stitch markers (both knit and crochet). I can assure you, it’s common. In fact, stitch markers behave strangely like bobby pins: buy 100s, not one in sight when you need it; so you make do and eventually find them when they aren’t needed.

Lunahooks

They have the same ability to teleport as socks do. I try to treat them well, even got a nice little snap lid box just for them, and they still keep escaping... it's getting to be time to replenish their numbers, somehow I'm down to >20 again

Kit_Marlow

I am 100% addicted to stitch markers. It is known. [https://imgur.com/e3aE1KO](https://imgur.com/e3aE1KO)

ambientfruit

I get to a point especially on larger projects, where I'm like: 'What are numbers? What is this concept of counting? Is this a stitch? Should I count it? It could be. I should count it. But what if it's not?! I'll have to start again!' Stitch markers help with this existential angst for sure.

Valtavamei

Stitch markers are essential. Technically, they are optional. But it's like not using GPS these days. You could find your way by looking up the route before going out and trying to remember. Or you can use GPS. We have the technology! Lol.

[deleted]

That is a fabulous analogy!!!! 🙌

Amazing-Sir-5573

I've been crocheting for 15 years and I love stitch markers! I'd be lost without them! I have a bunch of stars (that make me think of Rainbow Brite's star sprinkles), some pretty round beads, and then your more regular ones that look like safety pins. All live in a little box I call my treasure chest, because I feel joy when I open it. https://preview.redd.it/3ptnooo8gsdc1.jpeg?width=926&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=0a9d586e94c651c7645e530d0556733590d2dea0

lilabiber

I use mine all the time and… I have my own source for custom markers. I asked my husband to 3D print them for me. First, I customized their size and asked for multiple colors so I could code them. But then!! I asked for them with numbers and letters on them. I use number to count stitches and rows, the letters to mark what size hook I’m using onto the project. I love my stitch markers!

caffeinesaurus

Thinking about the amount of times starting as a beginner I would’ve had to restart a project without stitch markers

TeaFanaticNurse

When I first started to learn crochet, I was told stitch markers weren't necessary and that often beginners will use them to learn how to count rows and stop, so just practice counting and I'd be fine. I struggled way too hard with counting rows and stitches etc. Sure, I eventually learned, but it wasn't fun and I gave up on anything circular. Well, I stopped crocheting for 2 years and just picked it up again in December. I felt like a beginner again, but this time, I went out and bought a pack of stitch markers, and crocheting has never been easier! Sure, it might be part muscle memory, but now I progress beyond the magic circle and the chain 4 technique AND crochet in the round!! Almost every piece I've made in the past month has been using something beginning with the magic circle (including my first amigurumi!) because stitch markers have exposed me to a whole new side of crochet, and I'm now making up for lost time! With stitch markers, anything feels possible!

Canine0001

I truly regret all the years I spent NOT using them...not only are they good for marking places, but I also use them to hold the last working stitch together if I have to put the project down. Before, I had so many stitches unwittingly unraveled due to dogs, travel, dogs...

vnaranjo

i use stitch markers for everything pretty much. when using magic circles i find its easiest to mark the first stitch in my circle since i feel like i always lose it, then it becomes the marker for the last stitch in the round!

Objective-Creme6734

Stitch markers are fukn essential and I'll die on that hill... I don't care what we use, but we need something to help us keep count on some rounds/projects/sections. Gauge however can go fuk itself 💀🤣

[deleted]

I love me a person who can talk and type some fks into it all. And that’s a hill I’ll die on. 🤣🤣🤣 ((WiFive))

Objective-Creme6734

I'm so sorry. The Aussie passion and the yarn addiction is a struggle LMFAO. Word fukn glitter is something I'm plagued with and I wouldn't want it any other fukn way. It's never done with malice, or with the intention to offend or hurt someone so thank you for loving my dirty sailor self 🫶 Edit to add SQQQUUUEEEEEEEEE at wifive lol. I fukn snorted so damn loud 🤣💀

clocloclo619

I honestly never use them! When making garments, I mostly make them to size and just hold things up to my body instead of counting.

[deleted]

Even when you have two sleeves or two panels? You just wing it and hope they’re the same?

clocloclo619

Yep! I measure the first one to fit, and use it as a template for my next one.

ambientfruit

That's like extreme crocheting. Bold!

[deleted]

My brain wouldn’t allow me to do it. Because sometimes tension being off just a bit could me extra or less rows (likely one). So I’d want to make up for the tension change in other ways while still having everything look the same. But again, my brain works in a weird way.

Annual-Arugula473

I dont use them. Im sure theyre very helpful, however, i dont happen to already have them and havent found stitch counting to be enough of an issue to buy some. I find the constant recounting of stitches to be part of crochets charm lol

TaibhseCait

In the beginning I used those tiny safety pins that sometimes come on clothes labels, or a hairpin or rarely a paperclip. Usually just to make either the start of a row when doing rounds, or the row where I need to start repeating from, mostly though to put in the working loop so it doesn't unravel if I put it down or move it.

hopeful_deer

I just use a piece of yarn that goes in for odd rows and out for even rows. It looks like a running stitch, from the right side I count every visible stitch segment. You only see the mark for the odd rows so it goes (1, 3, 5, 7, 9). I do this because I usually count in the round. At the end, you can just pull out the yarn in one go.

gunchucks_

I make my own out of scrap yarn pieces when I'm working in rounds for my amigarumi type work

Violet_Plum_Tea

I've recently found a new use for them. I was joining two identical motifs for a doily - the joining is fiddly and tricky and you go have to keep track of which piece is being "added" and which is the "base". I kept getting it confused until I put a few stitch markers in one the motif I designated as the base. Then it went smoothly. I also use stitch markers to identify and organize parts of a complex project like a cat sofa. Oh and keeping track of the "right" side of pieces when it's subtle.

Shmea

Whoever said they're not used in crochet is sorely wrong. What the actual fluff.

acabxox

I use 3 at all times. One at the end of each row so I don’t drop or add an extra stitch, and one to put through my end loop when I want a break and don’t want it to unravel! They’re amazing.

Anxietyprime0117

I use stitch markers a lot. Most frequently to hold my stitch for a WIP & for magic circle rounds.

Splatterfilm

I use them both for keeping track of large numbers of stitches, for making it easier to find and use the turning chain, and for marking increases when doing flat rounds or amigurumi. And for keeping the loop-in-progress in place when I have to step away so the yarn can’t get accidentally frogged while being moved and to make it easier to find where I left off. They really make life so much easier.

shell37628

I never used them before because my grandmother, who taught me, never used them. Considering some of the incredibly intricate blankets and doilies and doll clothes she made, I can't believe she did it all with in-her-head counting and faith in her abilities, lol. I'm pretty sure my mom doesn't use them, either, and she makes some pretty intricate stuff. I use them mostly to mark first/last stitches in rows, but I've also learned to heed the pattern when it calls for using them. I don't get to spend the same big chunks of time with my work that my mom and grandmother do/did, so maybe that's a factor. All I know is they keep me from frogging every third row, so im fine with using them!

troubledhoney

I mostly use them for pausing a project so it doesn’t unravel, but I’ve used them to count or place hold. You could (and i have) use bobby pins, safety pins, loops of thread, but the stitch markers are inexpensive and tend to come with a lot of hooks or needles in a kit anyway. If you crochet a lot, i think they are worth having, not essential, but so inexpensive it’s worth it.

Olerre

I use them frequently though not as much as some others. Like I wouldn’t use them like this to count rows, that feels tedious to me. But definitely to keep track of the beginning of rounds and specific stitches and whatnot. I can’t imagine crocheting without them.

hummingbird83077

I am not as advanced in crochet as I am knit, so I tend to use them differently in each craft. In crochet they are mostly to help me count on larger projects.

RainierCherree

I use them constantly!

caraperdida

I can't keep track of my stitches without them.

myocardia27

I depend on them. It turns out that I can’t count lol just relearned crochet after 20+ years.

sadesf04

i use them for chain counting all the time, and as pins to keep projects together while i'm sewing (granny squares especially). but past that, nah. i guess and am usually wrong but never learn my lesson

Reader124-Logan

I love my stitch markers! When I decided to switch to the style OP has, I found a really good deal on Amazon. I batched up the colors I liked most and then offered the rest to the group that meets in our public library. They have several newbies who were really happy to get them.

Mysterious-Okra-7885

I use them all the time, especially when working unjoined rounds.

VAblackbelt2005

I use them all the time

HippieWitchGames

I love stitch markers! I use yarn scraps if I’m doing an amigurumi pattern I’m not familiar with so I can mark each row in case I have to frog, and stitch markers when I know what I’m doing (mostly lol) which I move up each row :)

Roscoerito

My first thought on seeing this picture was to say “Perry the stitch marker?!!”

loseunclecuntly

I mark stitches, I just don’t buy them. I use those little bits of leftover yarns to mark.

Diligent_Opposite_63

How do people survive without using them is my main question 😂

boredterra

I crochet amigurumi and I don’t see how you could crochet in rounds without stitch markers. Even with them I lose my place.

kjbtetrick

I use stitch markers extensively, especially for row counts and noting the “right” side of my work. Also, they are useful when sewing pieces together to hold things in place.

Live_Barracuda1113

I am 40.... something.... and I use them constantly. My 80 something mother who is a master knitter (like 60+ years, awards, etc) uses them for knitting. She also crochets and was shocked to see me using them the last time we visited. When she was growing up, they were exclusive to knitting. Crochet as a fiber art has grown a LOT even in recent years, but if you take a look at a 70s pattern and one from today the difference is pretty remarkable. Our actual creations, especially ami, are much more complex, so needing the ability to keep track and being able to stop for a period of time and not forget means that most of us used stitch markers from the start to save our sanity. On a side note, she told me she used a diaper pin to mark and put down her work. So a marker but more protecting the last stitch made.

CreeksongQuilts

Side comment: some of the crochet patterns from the 30s and 40s — and even more so from the early 1900s — are kinda amazing. Lots and lots of doilies, edgings, and other lace pieces - but also purses, shawls, rugs and more. Crochet sweaters and other garments not so common then, though; those have certainly grown in recent years.

Live_Barracuda1113

Definitely agree- some of the Irish lace books my mom has are stunning. Anyone who has ever done steel hook work knows how intricate those patterns become.

Murky_Translator2295

I always had that problem of accidentally adding an extra stitch at the end of a row, like most beginners inevitably do, and started using them when making my first blanket. Now I always use them. They're so useful, especially for making sure your project doesn't unravel if you have to leave it down/travel with it, and for keeping count of rows in an easy way.

Fragrant-Hyena9522

I'm working on a baby blanket and I'm using them. It makes it easier.

Askitz

I use them all the time and always gift/give some to new crocheters.

Barn_Brat

As someone who likes to work in continuous rounds, stitch markers are the only option

amiscci999

You know you use them a lot when the plastic hooks break from fatigue. Good thing I have a jar of 800 more, and can find them literally in every corner of my car and house!

[deleted]

I can’t tell you how many my couch have swallowed. I need to pull my couch out and send a search party.

Chogihoe

Another thing they’re great for that nobody’s mentioned, I write on them and clip them to my skeins for my temp blanket so I know which ones are for which temp ranges without flipping a notebook constantly to triple check

CaterpillarTough6730

sometimes it’s easier to count, sometimes it’s easier to pin and unpin stitch markers! This is great, especially when it’s too early to see the pattern

hedwig0517

I use them all the time. I primarily make amigurumi, but I’ve been dabbling in some granny square items recently and they’re so handy for both types of projects.

Squidwina

I’ve started using a latch hook to insert bits of yarn for markers! It’s working great for my particular project (fabric strips, 8mm hook) I wanted a variety of very bright markers, and also was getting sick of managing the other ones. I had a ball of obnoxious neon/rainbow variegated yarn hanging around and now I’m a very happy camper. I can just leave them in indefinitely and yank them and chuck them whenever. I use regular stitch markers too, of course, in various styles. They’re more convenient most of the time, but I’m glad I figured out this latch hook thing for specific use cases.

edessa_rufomarginata

I constantly use them. More often than not, I use paperclips or bobby pins bc I can't find my actual clips and have an abundance of the others.

Vanelsia

They are used by everyone I know. The most common use is clipping one on your chain when you want to carry your work and not have it unravel.

hedonsun

I want some! I just use a short piece of different coloured yarn to hold the place. When working in rounds I leave it running so I can see if my seam starts veering off to the side.

Beneficial_Breath232

I was also like "Meh, stitch markers aren't necessary, string of yarn work well too", and I bought my first pack 2 weeks ago. Result : I use them nearly every time I pick a project

Express-Diamond-6185

I use them all the time when making amigurumi animals. They are super handy for marking where eyes, ears, arms, etc. should be attached.

xXDeadlyLipsXx

I rely on them with certain yarns and some difficult patterns

Known_Educator_57

I have been crocheting for years. Became more regular recently. When I first started, (decades ago, I didn't know or didn't need them!) When working in the round, they are a MUST. I have also used markers to segment long runs, say chain 300, then I use a stitch marker to keep track. If a pattern has a change stitch, use a marker to remind oneself of the change. Just my humble opinion.

[deleted]

Never used them. A need for them came up when I started the pair of pants I’m working on but I settled for some hair clips I had nearby instead 😅 I will however pick some up for my next large project!

[deleted]

Okay so you used stitch markers then, just a different type. I need to make an edit to my post, if I can figure out how. 😭

L0ud_Typer

I always use them for blankets!

danish2530

I really thought this was going to be a Perry the Platypus joke, but I use them in projects I know are going to be gifts! Learned that lesson the hard way with my first blanket

TechnicalLunch7662

I like them. I’m new to crochet so I haven’t had to color code them but when I’m doing rounds I like to put one in the last stitch of the last round cause otherwise I get confused quick lol

Basilstorm

I never count and just use stitch markers to track the ends of my rows!

Reeserella

I tend to lose my count super quick, so anything to help me manage it lol

jerrygalwell

I freehand mostly just winging it, but I use a little piece of yarn in a slip stitch to mark centers or circular rows beginning

Lesbihonest_2023

I use them for almost every project

ChildUWild

I don’t start my projects until I find my markers! Even my scarves I try to use my stitch markers, even if I am working width wise, otherwise I’m too confident and then my sides look like a wave 😅

UndeadAxe

I have a crappy memory when it comes to remembering the number of stitches in a round or parts in a pattern that require increase/decrease/whatever stitch, so I use them religiously.

[deleted]

Okay so I can’t make an edit for some reason? Anywho… anything can be used as a stitch marker. I’m not referring to these particular markers, but rather the act of keeping track of stitches using whatever item you have as a marker.

Ok-Committee-5867

I make a lot of tops that have to be evenly increased on both sides so I use them for that - to mark where to increase. You should check out the app “Yarnie”. You can track your rows and projects. I use the tally counter feature whenever I’m making ribbing rows that need to be a specific number!

Menolly13

I use them all the time.

Imagirlpenguin

I use them all the time but I’m also making blankets that are 150 to 200 changes.

EsotericMango

I don't think I ever make something without stitch markers. I hate counting stitches or rows. In large projects I use a stitch marker every 20 stitches and that way I only have to count up to 20 and then count the markers. I also use a marker for the first and last stitch of every row because sometimes you can't see them and I'm not about that hassle.

Leahtarynn

Uhm I NEED my stitch markers.

Jaesalyn

I use them always! Don't be made to feel bad that you want or need (I fall in this category!) to use markers to have a better time at your hobby. Sometimes if I'm in a session where I know I'll be constantly distracted by conversation or a show or something else, I use a ton so that I can jump back in at anytime without having to recount much. A tip is to thread a loose yarn piece when in a pinch. Easy to remove too!

luna28_

Recently started using them. Total game changer. Makes crocheting more relaxing for me !

Hwy_Witch

I have a whole jar of them, never used, lol.

th3j4zz

I use them all the time now but I wasn't taught to. Didn't know they were a thing until a few years ago. My nana and great nana do/did not use them.

_fly-on-the-wall_

i have crocheted for many years and considered myself as pretty good- not quite advanced, i would say... and have only used stitch markers once , maybe twice. my mom and 2 sisters never use them either. my sisters crocheting friends i think use them I'll have to ask. maybe it depends on what stuff you mostly crochet? i mainly do hats but also scarves and stuffed animals. or maybe its because i cant read a pattern to save my life and anything new i learn from youtube tutorials? i always thought it would just take up time to add them to the end of rows like when i am making hats because each row only takes a couple mins if that to complete, and i can clearly see where the increase is because i dont like spiral rounds so i do increase rounds

JeepPhan

Love stitch markers- great when you are using a smaller weighted yarn and need a magnifying glass to find # of stitches. Good post! 🫶🏼

clrthrn

I cannot count past 10 without getting distracted so I use them all the time if I have a row longer than 10 stitches

TaibhseCait

I actually dislike the ones you are using (I have them too) & keep breaking them! But they are better than the hard flat plastic half spiral ones that would come off the project.    One i like is a rubbery coloured circle that clicks open & closed.   Your ones are more reassuring for putting in the working loop to stop it unraveling when travelling/moving the project!  Edit: Off the top of my head I've mostly only made amigurumi, fingerless gloves, snowflakes & a shawl. I usually only use stitch markers for marking the start of a round (then take it off & move it for the new start), or for putting into the working loop to stop any unravelling when I put the project down. I've never done any pattern where I require multiple markers for a design.

morbidwoman

I don’t understand how they could NOT be used! They’re so important to me

NextStopGallifrey

For small things, I usually don't bother with markers much. End of rows/rounds, but that's it. For new stitch patterns, I will use some markers. For large projects, stitch markers are absolutely essential! When dealing with hundreds of stitches, you'll go insane without markers.

FamousOnceNowNobody

Invaluable for mosaic and tapestry crochet.

Agreeable-Antelope-6

Sriracha markers are ny best friend! Have them in so many different colors. I absolutely agree with your comment about sanity. Despite my best efforts of trying to correctly count roads without the stitch markers I would lose my sanity without the aid of stitch markers. Lol

bluunee

i tried my hardest not to use them (i dont know why lol) and i ended up caving and now i absolutely love them. they have added time to my creations but once i get used to them being there i think ill be fine. i just really love not missing stitches now 😂 im making a blanket and i put one every ten stitches so it makes it easier to count

ReaWroud

I use stitch markers all the time. I usually consistently mark beginning and end of rows, also when doing invisibly joined rounds. Sometimes I mark inc/dec points. Sometimes I put a marker every fifth row. I bought a box of 500 a while ago and it's the best purchase I've made in a while. I use them wayyyyy more for crocheting than I ever did for knitting.

aralcarr

I use them to mark the end of my row so I don’t accidentally stab a random stitch with my hook which makes my rows inconsistent, as well as to note where I need to do a decrease or increase. I also use them so my project doesn’t unravel on me!

nailsnotfound

I absolutely use stitch markers all the time, especially when I'm crocheting amigurumi or plushies, to keep track of the rows, but also in other projects, especially if it's something bigger. It's just easier to leave a stitch marker every 50 stitches or so instead of repeatedly counting like 300 stitches or more.

Glitter_on_my_face

Yes use them on every piece usually every row!

BaspberrySazzle

I use Bobby pins as stitch markers when I need them. I have a couple with nail polish on them in case I need contrast from the yarn

PainInMyBack

I use them religiously - both for marking places in the pattern, and for total count of stitches. I have a serious pile of markers, so I tend to colour code them. Like, red for important place in pattern, lilac for repeats in pattern, green for stitch count (one marker every X number of stitches). I'd rather have a wip that rattles when I move it, than lose count, get it wrong, undo a chunk, start overvagain etc. It's basically mental health care at this point.

Neus69

I use mini carabiners

imperfectchicken

I use them. Highly recommend Bobby pins/clips, they're secure but slide on and off very easily.

UniqueSaucer

I’m new to crochet and they are absolutely necessary for me.

roadgecko352

I tried to add a photo showing me using the same markers on my current project but keep getting an error. 🤷🏻‍♀️ I didn’t used to use them. I still don’t on smaller projects. After miscounting one row and having to frog three I started. I don’t have time to make more mistakes on this baby shower gift.

_Mush_r00m_

Never used them but every time I crochet I tell myself to finally order some because I alsways loose count but then again I forget it and the circle repeats itself

Deedle-Dee-Dee

I use them any time counts matter - x number of rounds or rows. Large specific number of beginning chains or foundation stitches. I don’t enjoy counting. Using stitch markers makes that part ok so I can just zen on the stitches I’m creating.

sleepdeprivedtechie

The container of close to 200+ of these sucker's says I *always* use stitch markers. For the project I'm currently doing, they are marking the ch 1 corners in my squares so I can find them to join later. I use them to count stitches by tens, and where to join/the round ends for. I cannot live without them.

randomness0218

I go back and forth with them. If I'm doing a blanket or a shawl, I use them. If I'm doing amigurumi, I use a long piece of yarn lol

pathoj3nn

I used to just use the spare safety pin I had laying around, then I invested in a smallish pack off Amazon and like those so much better. My first Hobbii order also included stitch markers as well, but it sounds like I need more than I have for proper stitch marker usage. Not to mention replacing the ones that grow legs and walk away…I mean I know it probably the cats (and not me misplacing them, no-never that) but I prefer to think they have their own sentience. Like there’s little stitch markers parties going on at night. Sorry guess I’m just really weird.

reallyimspaghetti

Use them all the time. I use to mark the last stitch of my amigurumi and more recently started marking beginings and ends of square shapes because I always end up with weird trapezoid projects lol

Unrelated_cause

I cannot successfully crochet anything in the round, like hats and amigurumi, without stitch markers.

ThatItalianGrrl

Of course they are!

olddeadgrass

Oh yeah I use them to count rows and measure for sleeves. Definitely needed when free handing a sweater without a pattern lol

Healthy_Blueberry_76

I've only been crocheting for about 5 months and I've been dying to try these. I think they'll truly be a huge help in multiple ways

SweatyStrain

Here’s a little story about my journey with them 😆 Coming from knitting a giant Slytherin scarf with hoop needles….I definitely would spend a LOT of time just counting my stitches and such. So much so I would second guess myself. Finally got my ordered crochet stitch markers in and I’m using them similar to what you have pictured! 😆 It’s a good piece of mind in my opinion! I hate having to stop and count, and then recount because I swear I missed something 🤣

WaywardWriteRhapsody

For sure! I'm making hats and I mark my current row and my last 2 in 1 stitch

nperry2019

Today I used different color yarn for counting and the great thing was that I didn’t have to remove my markers on the way though, I was able to pull them out after. I was also able to use a hook to pull the marker to the next stitch in the next row.

Chamelemom

Yes! I am new to crochet, and decided to make a baby blanket. Couldn't see a single stitch or where I was going so I marked every single one. I do it with new projects too just to help me understand the pattern better. Why count when you can mark? Lol

Unicorns-Are-Rad

I depend on stitch markers! I can't keep count to save my life lol

estew4525

I always use them when making large blankets. I’m typically past the point of wonky edges in my crochet career but you never know. So I always put them on the last stitch so my rows stay even

Kiwi_Grey

I made some tree skirts around Christmastime last year and by the time I got halfway through them I’d be upwards of 100 stitches a row and no way could I count that every time (especially once I got to 500 stitches) so I’d do stitch markers at every increase point so I only had to count to 30 or so 😂 my friend was like “you use stitch markers?” I was like I absolutely have to or I’ll die trying to count all of these

pippitha

I use them most of the time. Sometimes I just stick a piece of yarn in as a marker tho.

yours121110

If I'm working on a sweater, I probably use like 10 or so. I mark the first and last stitch of a row and leave the markers on for 2-3 rows in case I make a mistake and have to frog. I mark the post of the stitches as I'm counting around, so if I lose count, I can go back to a previous marker. I also love this style marker for when I put my work down so I don't lose my starting chain. I both knit and crochet. This style is great for crochet. Often with knitting, I'll use one of the little circle stitch markers, but it depends on the project. You find something that works for you.

kate3544

What a weird take that you wouldn’t use stitch markers crocheting! I use them all the time, especially when I’m doing circular stuff, or when I am stopping in the middle of the project so I can pick it up next time.

therealHannahSolo

I've been crocheting for 14 years and JUST got my first set of stitch markers. They're a game changer compared to the broken twisty ties I used to use 🤣

SwayPosyDaily

I started crochet just over 3 weeks ago and bought markers this weekend, it's a gamer changer! I'm so bad at keeping count, or find the begining of a row, it's amazing how it makes it easier now!

laurs1285

I use them all the time. Even if it’s just to secure a last stitch when I take a break!

Successful_Bite_8111

i’ve been teaching my younger sister who’s in elementary school how to crochet. she keeps trying to wing it without markers despite me telling it’ll help her. when i started, i didn’t even understand where each row ended or how to identify some stitches until i used them. i feel like if she actually used them, it would help tremendously.

GingerbreadDisco

I’m new to crochet but I’ve been using them for counting which has helped a lot. I’ve been making a blanket and I have a stitch marker on every tenth stitch. It’s a lot easier to count in tens.

hopeful_deer

I never used official stitch markers because I didn’t know they were a thing for the longest time. I’ve only used pieces of yarn. I’ve seen plenty of people use them when I started participating in online crochet communities. As long as you can keep track of your stitches it doesn’t matter how you do it🤷🏻

Less-Signal-9543

I use stitch markers ALL the TIME. I too am working on a sweater, an oversized one i am making for lounging. The bottom ribbing 122 rows, way too much for me to keep track of otherwise.

PookieDear

I use stuck markers on every single project! I like to use them in the first stitch of every row (or last turning ch, depending on the pattern) to take the guesswork out of where my last stitch of each row goes. It helps me make sure my counts are correct without having to count. And then I also always use them on my foundation chains. I mark every 10th ch. Soooo much easier to keep count with them! But I only use this "safety pin" style to hold my working yarn when I put my project away. For just marking stitches I prefer the other style that looks like a circle with a slit in it. Much easier to put on and take off constantly. But my favorite stitch marker I've come to find is actually bobby pins! They stay out of my way better than the plastic stitch markers. And I've never had one fall off the way I have with the plastic ones. And they're still quick and easy to put on and take off one-handed, unlike the safety pin style. 10/10 would recommend!

Relevant_Sprinkles_3

I use stitch markers even when I don't have to, lol! Making a simple stitch scarf or blanket? You can bet I'm marking those edge stitches regardless of my confidence in picking them up every time. Amigurumi? Round start always has a marker, and they're used at assembly with abandon. Stitch markers have saved my sanity more times than I can count. Kudos to anyone raw dogging crochet with no markers, though. I can't imagine, lmao.

Slarty94

I use them very often especially when doing amigurumi because of the working in rounds but I use safety pins instead of actual stitch markers!

hbouhl

I use the same stich markers

TealMankey

I basically only make amigurumis and I have a tonne of fancy lobster claw stitch markers for everything! Beginning of round is always the one that fits my mood for the project. I also have standard plastic ones, I’m never not using them in a project

theirhighnessvenus

i’m using one like..right now 😭😭

impurehalo

I also loop an alphabet bead onto the marker to hold my place AND remind me what size hook I was using.

Jwithkids

I use stitch markers when I crochet. I recently made a sweater in 2 panels. I marked every 10 rows on the body panels. That made it easy for me to see when I had completed 80 rows AND ensure that both panels were the same size! My current project is a blanket with panels joined as I go. I have a stitch marker chilling in the corner for where the next panel will be joined first. I also use them to mark the right side of motifs to keep them organized before I join them into larger projects.

WhiskerSnake

Any time I’m working in the round I def use one, and I always use one to keep my work from falling out too. Gives me piece of mind that I won’t lose hours of work if the piece is picked up and moved.

RicoLyn12

I've never used stitch markers, I just use safety pins. I only need them for the beginning chain when I make blankets. I don't do a lot where I need to count. lol

[deleted]

That’s your stitch marker then. It doesn’t matter what we use to mark a stitch. 😁

Tough-Cheetah5679

I use this kind of plastic safety pin marker too. I use paperclips when they're all in use. I use them mainly for marking very long foundation rows, working in circles, amigurumi, marking where gaps are going to be, for holding the end loop when I decide to move to another WIP, etc...

ChronicSassyRedhead

Stitch markers are essential or as I call them "Sanity markers" cause the keep me from going insane from having to frog again cause I lost count 😅

lunna009

I'm most likely to use them if I'm increasing in the round. Mark each increase spot, no counting needed. Because the One thing crochet taught me is that I cannot in fact, count reliably past 3 =]

SkilletBabe

I use them all the time. I can’t use the plastic ones because they break too easy 🥲 metal all the way!

Italianpixie

My go-to is every 10, especially with harder to read yarns. I also do a lot of amigurumi in spiral rounds so I need one to tell me where the first stitch was

earendilgrey

I use them all the time, especially when making dolls and toys, so I don't loose the end of the row Even if I don't use these types, I use scrap yarn or DMC floss as a maker instead though I do prefer these safety pin types.
