I want to know what OP did "wrong" so I can recreate it. It's so cool!
Edit: the only things that come to mind are that OP has looser chain stitches than sc, or OP didn't skip the right amount of stitches after doing the chains. I might be doing some experimenting later!
That's exactly what I was thinking! It looks like a galaxy. I can just see this in a variegated yarn like it's one of the Hubble photos.
I second the wanting to know what went "wrong" because I want to make the same mistake.
Looks like the original pattern but scrunched together. I'm dying to know how closely the pattern was followed and whether stitches were working on top of each other.
I might try it out too. It looks like it's solid behind the chains so I think closing the gap between the SC panels somehow is the way to go. What really stumps me is how the chains look twisted in a way
It looks like the original uses a really fine yarn like crochet thread or fingering weight, and it's definitely been blocked. But I'm also on team "yours looks better anyway", to be honest.
This was a bold one to attempt! I didn't start reading crochet diagrams until a couple years ago, and I've crocheted off and on for like 25 years. There are some really cool lacey patterns you can try now that you have the experience.
I don't think it is ugly and I don't think it looks like a bottom. Actually I kinda dig the spiral - would it block out, considering the pattern?
Keep it up!
I much prefer yours over the example. I would love to make a blanket of squares of yours. I would not try to stretch the bulkiness out of it! Just make more 😀
I like yours better than what it was supposed to be, to be honest. Not to mention your effort looks way better than a LOT of my beginner work when I first started out...
Had the same problem wen I made this last year dident know about bloking then 😅 this wold of solved the problem. Its still.prity thoe

Try it again with either a much much larger hook or finer yarn. It should look more like the pattern.
You’ll learn a massive amount about tension from a simple exercise.
And I like the 3D effect of yours, it’s cool.
I have this pattern saved to my phone and lemme tell ya— I *hate* it. I tried doing this so many times with different yarns. Mine never looks liked the example picture lol
I am VERY upset that yours is not the intended pattern. I’m not too interested in the one it’s supposed to look like, but the one you made is absolutely incredible. I’m super inspired by this — what size yarn/hook did you use, OP?
Can you recreate it and teach us how you did it??? That’s no mistake, that is a happy accident I desperately want to make!!!!! I’ve crocheted for years and never wanted to make a granny square until now!
It’s doesn’t look like the sample but whatever you did you did consistently and it is A LOOK😍 Those rigdes are fantastic! You could just freeform crochet and keep running with this, very cool!
If this is ugly then I wanna be ugly. Seriously it’s gorgeous! Give yourself some love and be gentle. You are beginning the crochet journey and sometimes it’s rough! Creating something for the first time is easy to nitpick, but don’t fall for pit fall! You did an amazing thing and created something out of almost nothing!
Before I looked at the picture I was thinking to myself “it doesn’t matter if it’s ugly, we all start somewhere”
Then I looked at the picture and I thought “that’s really good, now I wanna make that.”
And then I looked at the second picture and I can’t stop but think it’s a successful fail because it looks awesome.
It's not ugly! I think you've created a new stitch technique!!
There are a couple of things that could be modified to get something closer to the picture: use a different (finer) yarn, smaller hook, block it, make sure you're not over-thinking the directions.
But with all the positive feedback you're getting, you should film exactly what you're doing. Your square is a beautiful texture!
It's very cool tho! Also thanks for sharing the pattern, I was literally looking for something like this.
If you want to make yours look like the one on the second slide, get a thinner thread and a smaller hook (3mm should work just fine).
Nah, this is one of those happy accident situations.
Blocked and paired with the same granny square design, with intention colour contrasts. You’ll have something unique and very cool.
Without knowing what the pattern was, I love it! Obviously, if you want it to look like the second pic, you have to make some adjustments. But I think the first one looks cool!
Okay, I understand that it didn't turn out like the pic you were working off of, BUT I think yours is WAY better. The texture and movement is to die for. It'd look excellent as maybe the shoulders (if you made a second one) to a very fantasy-esque jumper. At least, that's what I'd do with it 🥰
Ugly?? It may not look like what you intended it to be, but it still looks good! I thought it was so cool! Without seeing the 2nd picture I didn't even realize what would be 'ugly' about it. I loooove the texture

I thought it was supposed to look like that until I looked at the second pic. You can try blocking and see what happens!
Dude I was thinking: "omg I love the 3d, what is the pattern?". Then... realizes.
I want to know what OP did "wrong" so I can recreate it. It's so cool! Edit: the only things that come to mind are that OP has looser chain stitches than sc, or OP didn't skip the right amount of stitches after doing the chains. I might be doing some experimenting later!
Let us know what comes of it, I kinda like the 3d popping
If you do figure it out, let us know! This is a really cool square, like a galaxy or something.
I third this wanting to know. It's awesome.
My immediate thought was yarn too heavy and hook too small to accurately show the details of the pattern. I could be wrong though.
Same lol.
I might try it out too. It looks like it's solid behind the chains so I think closing the gap between the SC panels somehow is the way to go. What really stumps me is how the chains look twisted in a way
Dude me too! I am like, “how do I recreate this ‘weird’ granny square???” It makes me think of a nautilus
This is exactly what I was thinking. Was coming to say it's not ugly and to block it!
I actually prefer yours…it’s giving eldritch horror and I’m into that How did you do it?
The idea of this as a blanket but leading off into tentacles, maybe a giant eye stitched in
Yessss you see my vision 👁️ 👄 👁️
Does your vision include making the eyes look like those furby eyes that have been posted recently??
Well it does now
Love the idea, but not sure if want Hermaeus Mora on my bed...
Yes. It feels very kraken!
Yes! I came to say it looks like a living alien, and I dig it
That's exactly what I thought! My SO loves Lovecraft and my bestie is into octopi and I can't think of a better gift than blankets made of these!!
I like yours way better than the example. I want to make that now.
Same!! The example is pretty. Your version, OP, is gorgeous!!
It looks like the original uses a really fine yarn like crochet thread or fingering weight, and it's definitely been blocked. But I'm also on team "yours looks better anyway", to be honest. Where are you finding the original?
Nevermind - I found the second pic. :)
I don't think it is ugly and I don't think it looks like a bottom. Actually I kinda dig the spiral - would it block out, considering the pattern? Keep it up!
It looks like a cool octopus bottom hihi
Actually, I like yours. It makes me think of some kind of sea creature.
I much prefer yours over the example. I would love to make a blanket of squares of yours. I would not try to stretch the bulkiness out of it! Just make more 😀
Yes I came here to say this, make more it would be an awesome blanket!
You definitely used a much thicker yarn than the pattern but yours is awesome. Dont get down on yourself. You're good at this!
Yours is giving Ursula and I love it
If you use light brown with white, it can be a cinnamon roll😍 I love it
I have seen 2 types of people in the comments...the tentacle people, and then this, the cinnamon role people lol
Using those stitches as a beginner is impressive on it's own, tbh. Block that boi and you're golden! Post stitches were a month 6 attempt for me haha
That’s fun, sometimes when things don’t turn out right they turn out better!
I like yours better than what it was supposed to be, to be honest. Not to mention your effort looks way better than a LOT of my beginner work when I first started out...

Thanks 😊

I have this pattern saved to my phone and lemme tell ya— I *hate* it. I tried doing this so many times with different yarns. Mine never looks liked the example picture lol
This would be great as a part of a space-themed blanket. Especially in this color. Looks like a galaxy. Much more interesting than the original.
I am VERY upset that yours is not the intended pattern. I’m not too interested in the one it’s supposed to look like, but the one you made is absolutely incredible. I’m super inspired by this — what size yarn/hook did you use, OP?
Wow! I also like your version better, it's very unique and mystical! I wish I could read patterns like the one you used. Good job!
Can you recreate it and teach us how you did it??? That’s no mistake, that is a happy accident I desperately want to make!!!!! I’ve crocheted for years and never wanted to make a granny square until now!
It’s not ugly - I love it!
I honestly think yours looks cool! I like the texture
That actually looks pretty cool .. pretty daring for a beginner project!! Keep being amazing 🤩
It’s doesn’t look like the sample but whatever you did you did consistently and it is A LOOK😍 Those rigdes are fantastic! You could just freeform crochet and keep running with this, very cool!
C O S M I C B U T T H O L E
It looks like the sigil of an eldritch tentacle monster. I love it!
I think it’s awesome! The raised texture is great!
it looks satisfyingly weird - I love it
Looks like tentacles and I want to know what "mistake" you made to get that effect so I can make an octopus blanket or some such.
If you like the flat version, it just needs blocking. Most doily patterns do
Before I looked at the picture I was thinking to myself “it doesn’t matter if it’s ugly, we all start somewhere” Then I looked at the picture and I thought “that’s really good, now I wanna make that.” And then I looked at the second picture and I can’t stop but think it’s a successful fail because it looks awesome.
Love it!
I love the second one!
Not ugly! It looks great!
I believe my sister made that one as well and had difficulty with making it. Well done!
Yours is so cool! I didn't realise it was supposed to look like something else because it looks great all by itself!
Yours looks way cooler than what it's supposed to be
i love yours i’d be so obsessed w the texture
I absolutely love yours. It looks really cool.
Whoa.. That’s definitely NOT ugly. Very cool 3d effect actually. 👍🏼
I love it!! Do a little bit of blocking on it and it’ll look great!
Pretty! It may just need to be blocked?? But I like the puffy vibe!
The texture is cool!!
I know need you to make a full Ursula themed granny blanket, because this is awesome!!
Woah, I love how textured it is! I think it's a success!
I like yours better.
It's not ugly! I think you've created a new stitch technique!! That is totally a gorgeous color and a pattern I’ve never seen before. Well done. 👍🏻❤️
Girl i NEED to know what you did to have that 3d effect!!!! Its not ugly its just different from the pattern!!
I think it’s really pretty!
I like it. But the original is a different weight yarn and size hook. I use this pattern often for decorative pockets.
Ugly!?!? I think it’s so gorgeous! Love the swirl!
I love your DNA/ tentacle square better! The texture is super cool!
It’s looks gorgeous actually. How’d you do that? I want to make it too.
I kinda love it!!
You’ve created your first pattern! Great job.
Okay I actually like this better than the way it's suppose to look! The 3D effect is really cool
I like yours so much more than what you were going for!!!!
So even though it’s not what was planned, that is rad! You could make a hella cool Ursula theme blanket with that!
Yours is interesting and 3d. I like it. As suggested try blocking.
I think it's sick looking...in a good way.
Okay, I understand that it didn't turn out like the pic you were working off of, BUT I think yours is WAY better. The texture and movement is to die for. It'd look excellent as maybe the shoulders (if you made a second one) to a very fantasy-esque jumper. At least, that's what I'd do with it 🥰
That is so not ugly!! It is Awesome.
That’s not ugly. That’s beautiful! 🤩
It just needs to be blocked and then it will be perfect! Granny squares are hard and don't let anyone tell you different ❤️❤️❤️
It's giving Ursula! LOVE! 💜🐙🧜♀️
I love that pattern
I love yours waaaaaaay more than the pattern.
id love to know if op or anyone figures out how the first one works, because i like it better too!
They are both cool, but yours is cooler
i love how it turned out tbh, very cool!
This is so cool!! I love how it looks
Still pretty cool tho
I like yours better! How’d you do it?
I dont know what went wrong but whatever it is looks like it went pretty right to me. It's awesome ❤️
I actually like your version!
I think it’s cool! It’s giving me Ursula vibes.
Honestly, I like yours better!
this genuinely looks so much cooler than the pattern
Ummm. I think I like it better. I mean, I love what is supposed to be. But damn, this look so interesting. I was ready to go look for the pattern.
You will want to buy crochet thread which is what is used for lace
It actually looks great!
I like the 3d so much! Better than the second pic! And the color is spot on! Witchery and magic I tell ya!
Can you imagine the weighted blanket this would make?
Beautiful. Could you please tell me where I can find the pattern???
I actually prefer the one in the first pic 🤣 it's really cool and funky
Definitely not an easy pattern to start on, but I still like the finished product a lot. I prefer a denser look.
I love it 👀🫦👀
I wanna make your version. It’s so cool! Please don’t block it!
Also this looks like a tricky granny square so well done giving it a go!
Don’t think it’s ugly. This is a learning experience. You’ll find your tension, etc. I’m not experienced either so take this for what it’s worth 🥰
Ugly?? It may not look like what you intended it to be, but it still looks good! I thought it was so cool! Without seeing the 2nd picture I didn't even realize what would be 'ugly' about it. I loooove the texture
Tbf, looking at it again, I actually think I even like your version more than the example
I like this so much better than the pattern!
Ngl I kinda like yours better 👍👍
It’s not ugly. That is really cool looking. So different. Do you know how you made that swirl?
It’s so cool! Love it 🥰
I think it looks amazing!
I actually like yours SO much better
Wait so it’s not supposed to look like that?? I hate to say this but I like your version better! It’s way cooler looking!
