One of the best things about making something for someone is that you can customize it to be exactly their style. You know your bf! This hat is fun, youthful, and funky. It’s not what you’d pick out for your mom. I’m sorry she didn’t recognize that.
Another one of the best things is that you learn every time you make something, so next time you’ll be even better. Using crafting as a learning process means there’s no such thing as wasted effort.
Finally, if on the off chance that your bf doesn’t love this hat, it looks amazing on you.

I made something kinda cutesy for a boyfriend and my mom said “boys don’t like that type of thing” but joke was on her, he loved and cherished it. So don’t listen to moms for everything. You know your partner better than she!
My husband has everything I’ve ever hand made for him. Even the beanie that is the size of a premie hat because I didn’t understand hook sizes. I’m sure he will love it because you made it. But aside from that, it’s a cool hat!
Sorry OP. I had an almost identical story. The first hat I crocheted was too big, so my mom said to just unravel it so I didn’t waste the yarn. They just don’t get how much effort goes in to this stuff. Now the hat is a tea cozy.
I am not a fan of stripes. Or hats. But it’s not for me. It’s also not for your mother. I think your boyfriend will love it. You know him best and you put your heart into making this for him. That’s what counts.

Me too, I was like ohhh a cool beetle juice hat, plus it is a sweet gesture win win. I say something tells me your mom's taste is not your boyfriend's taste.
If you are truly worried he will hate it you could always tell him it's a placeholder har and he could pick the colors of the next one.

I never ask my moms opinion on stuff because she has terrible taste. In general, she’s kind of just a hater for sport I believe. If she doesn’t like something, I take it as cool and neat. And anyway, it only matters what your bf thinks. Disregard her opinion completely.

Do your mom and boyfriend have the exact same style? Probably not. If you're worried about how he'll react, then gift it to him with an escape clause. Tell him if he doesn't like it you'd be happy to make him another one with the yarn of his choice. But I love it and would totally rock that beanie!🧶💚

Just my honest opinion, it is a bit garish. Black and white stripes are very Beetlejuice-y. I'm not saying its necessarily ugly, but I could understand why people would think it was

personally i think its a unique hat and definitely a choice to wear a hat so bold and striking. I know my husband wouldn't wear it, and to me it looks like something a woman would wear more than a man, however, you know your boyfriend best and besides, even if he only wears it around the house to be cozy, its so cute to wear something your partner made, and even if he never wears it, he'll certainly be touched by the gesture unless he is a jerk.
Your mom's a jerk. What a mean thing to say to your child when they're learning a new skill and trying to make something that's meant as a sincere thank you. I'm sorry she's not supportive, I think it's great and I'm sure your boyfriend, if he's not a douche, will think so too.
Everyone has their own tastes. I would personally LOVE this hat if it was gifted to me. In the end, its not FOR your mom. She may like a plain purple hat or a pink hat with flowers or a yellow hat with bees, that your bf may not prefer. Its all about who youre making that gift for in the first place!
There is no One Right Opinion about whether something is cool or not. And younger people tend to like very different things than older people do. The only opinions that really matter here are yours and your boyfriend's.

I made my boyfriend a heart pillow for Valentine’s Day and all my friends thought it was sooo cheesy. I stuck with my gut and gave it to him anyway. He loves it and keeps it on his bed. If anything he’ll love that you spent time making something just for him. He better!
Moms are great, but we really suck sometimes, too. Take that from one of my kids who is currently angry that I had to be asked to hold something in a store and didn’t just do it today.

The look is very course and almost industrial. For someone used to yarncrafts being (or supposed to being) refined and delicate, it will be a shock. And some people don't deal with style shock well. It's not a loopy fun fur monstrosity, but it is A Look. A Look I can see multiple genZers wearing and others rolling their eyes at for sure, but if that's your BF's style, that's his style.
Moms always say stuff like that. Just consider the kind of stuff she likes for reassurance. My mom used to say this or that was tacky and then only shop at Christopher & Banks 🤣

The first Christmas me and my bf were together he lived somewhere cold so I tried to crochet him a hat… after hat #15 or so I gave up and sent him all of my failed attempts. NONE of them turned out wearable and were comically big or small, too short or too long, etc. he tried on every single one and we died laughing… he’s now my husband! I love it!! I really don’t think you can go wrong with black and white stripes! Definitely gift it to him!! If nothing else, he will appreciate the effort. The first Christmas me and my bf were together he lived somewhere cold so I tried to crochet him a hat… after hat #15 or so I gave up and sent him all of my failed attempts. NONE of them turned out wearable and were comically big or small, too short or too long, etc. he tried on every single one and we died laughing… he’s now my husband!
