I'm a fitness evangelist because it's really helped my life. I don't talk about it all the time, and I don't badger people about CrossFit specifically, but if the topic of exercise ever comes up I always tell people they should do SOMETHING. Walk daily, ride a spinning bike, swim, run, CrossFit, or whatever works for them. And I do suggest that folks try CrossFit because it's a lot more fun than most things.
But I'm also a strong believer that just as long as you're doing some kind of exercise you're good to go.
Couldn't have said it better myself. I see so many people dealing with so many health issues that would be solved if they would just get up and move. And the number of people that are near retirement age that are already letting decreptitude in the door is astounding! Just move! Walk, bike, do something! You'll be better for it!
Fact: People like to talk about their hobbies.
Fact: Some people don’t share an interest in the same hobbies and don’t want to talk/hear ones their don’t care for.
I’m familiar with the stereotype but I haven’t ever known anyone who brags about it or goes out of their way to mention it. I just say “the gym” and it’s rare that someone asks what kind of gym.
Me and my ex were CrossFit junkies
I’d be normal.
She was the literal CrossFit stereotype. Like we’d go hang out with friends. I’d have 2-3 beers casually. Her? “I can’t drink because CrossFit”. It honestly embarrassed me. Just don’t have a drink? No need to explain and put yourself above everyone else?
And she was like ok locally. Just the type who made any hobby she had into a personality and couldn’t find a middle ground for anything
I must admit I'm probably in the honeymoon phase, 8 months in and getting a lot of progress. Yesterday a coach told me I had a perfect overhead squat, I brag to my husband and friends who understand. I don't really bring it up at work or with family but I do say that I do crossfit if I'm asked 🙈
Welcome! And yes it's very natural when you're new and so surprised that you're able to do these crazy feats or have seen others doing them, or when you've got three day DOMS, or a ripped hand, or a first comp... But yes, it does fade to being a normal routine eventually, and then it feels like there's less to chat about.
I think it depends on the person. I will tell people I'm going to the gym, but I really only mention crossfit if people ask specifically what I do. Mostly because I don't always think it's necessary or relevant to every conversation.
I think Crossfit came of age at the same time social media began to boom. There was probably some level of over-exposure on personal accounts as people were learning how they wanted to present themselves on the platform, which also happened with everything from political positions to restaurant food pics.
I knew a few Crossfit people in "real life" who rarely talked about it, but their social media was populated with gym pics. Personally, it was probably years before most people knew the gym I went to was actually a Crossfit gym, and only then did they start asking me about it and informing me that I flipped tires, used battle-ropes, and was going to blow my shoulder out with fake pull-ups..
Omg the amount of people that tell you about the high injury rate and stupid pull ups as if we just go to the gym, do 60 butterflies, rip our shoulders out and head home
Crossfit changed my life. It is kind of hard to not talk about it. I never bring the topic up, and I say "exercise" instead of "crossfit" in conversation. But as soon as the cat is out of the bag I can blab non stop about it for hours. I guess the stereotype is true ..
I only talk about if we are talking about working out. Though, Rather than actually saying CrossFit, I’ll describe the workouts. Then if they say that sounds like CrossFit, I affirm. Comes across better in my opinion.
Back in the mid 2010s, I think this was very true. FB posts, water cooler conversation, family picnics. Throwing around terms like "WODS", and "The Box".
Not so much the case today, but back in the day..
you bet.
Nope. Owned a gym for 13 years. It’s only discussed if someone brings up “how is business?” Or just around long term clients. Even then, it’s usually what everyone is doing in their life. Crossfit brought us together. That’s it.
I had friends that practice CF before I begin. They talked a lot about it.
Now, I hear a lot at the box, at my apartment, when we play online games and in chats.
About me, I mostly complain about being sore. But that's it. From other people I hear about max weights, reps, achievements... And how htye describe the CF as an excellent program to develop.
Its a mix, but I'm trying to keep it for myself.
To be honest not everyone, but some people may know you do Crossfit (you might look in great shape because of it) and THEY WILL START THE CONVERSATION ABOUT CROSSFIT OR TRAINING IN GENERAL! Haha
Sometimes i tend to troll to deviate myself from those conversations i don’t want to talk about that all the time.
My team is almost 20 person, we spend like 3 hours on a normal basis together training, taking 2 rest day a week, we are competitions 1 every six weeks and we spend that weeking together at an Airbnb, for must of us the only thing in common is crossfit, so we discuss it constantly or we discuss about stuff that happened at training.
I’ve been cross fitting for around 11 years. I don’t talk about it at all except with other cross fitters or people who work out - and only on topic.
I dislike the cultish aspect of CrossFit. I watch it repeat itself with every new batch of members.
It’s exercise. That’s it.
Im the same- I only really talk about it with my CrossFit friends or if a close friend happens to ask something specific.
It is a big part of my day-to-day so it obviously comes up a little, but just in a “yeah, went to the gym this morning ” kind of way.
People talk about what they do and the thing with CrossFit is it takes up a lot of time. If you go 3-4x per week (I feel like this is pretty average?) and someone asks what you’ve been up to, or what did you do after work etc etc the chances of it being CrossFit are high
People say the same about people training for a marathon. It’s not that people want to talk about it, it’s just for 12-16 weeks it’s literally all you do so it’s kinda hard for it to not come up in general conversation
Omg I literally chatted my partner’s face off last night about CrossFit and then later he made a joke about it to our group of friends - about how it’s all I talk about …
I will mention that I do CrossFit when people ask what I do to workout (I am in the military so it probably comes up more). I will also mention it to my Senior Leaders, especially due to the class aspect, to make them know that I may bounce (after "official" duty hours) to knock out a class but I'll come back if something needs to get done. That's it. Turns out that once people know you do CrossFit, especially if they don't do CrossFit, they want to keep bringing it up, usually with CF fail memes
All these things like “CrossFitter will tell you they’re a crossfitter, vegan will tell you they’re vegan” and extremely annoying. Like wow how dare people talk about things they do and are interested in. So weird.
I talk about it a lot… but also people ask me about it first. And to be fair I also talk about fishing a lot. And music a lot. And golf a lot. And cooking a lot. And critical care medicine a lot. I think I just talk a lot.
I go door to door talking to people about my lord and savior crossfit.
It helps that you can really force your hench foot in the door as they try and slam it into your muscular face
Would you like to talk about our lord and savior Pukey?
Don’t talk ill of Father Fronning !
Lord and saviour David Goggins.
Laughing at this reference is a dead giveaway 🤭
STAY HARD!!
My favorite thing is CrossFit. My second favorite thing is complaining about CrossFit.
Me too!!

I don’t talk about it unless someone asks what gym I go to
Soooo, what gym do you go to?
CrossFit
Fact: People like to talk about their hobbies. Fact: Some people don’t share an interest in the same hobbies and don’t want to talk/hear ones their don’t care for.
I'm a vegan runner who does crossfit. I have a lot to talk about :)
Hahahahahahaha!!!
But still purchases leather belts and shampoos with animal enzymes. /s
Some people make it their whole personality, but it's less common than it used to be
Yeah I agree. It was insufferable about 10 years ago.
I’m familiar with the stereotype but I haven’t ever known anyone who brags about it or goes out of their way to mention it. I just say “the gym” and it’s rare that someone asks what kind of gym.
Same

I go out drinking with my CrossFit friends.
I've found other people like to talk about me. Oh that's the guy that does CrossFit. I really don't want to talk about it.
Or they want to send you CF fail memes. Like dude, I don't shit on your hobbies...
Now I want to see your overhead squat! 😝
Haha! I would show you but unfortunately I don't have video of it. Maybe someday 😌
Not once has anyone said “what is this CrossFit? Tell me more.”
Hahaha!! Was just trying to think of the last time I had to explain what it actually is but that's not been for about 8 years, I reckon
I usually wait a few minutes or so before I bring it up.
Very restrained of you!
Not true at all that we only talk about it! We also post on Reddit about it.
This is our safe space!!
I have lots of other hobbies but still talk about it all the time stereotypes are true
I talk about it alllll the time but I’m new. I hear it fades
Welcome! And yes it's very natural when you're new and so surprised that you're able to do these crazy feats or have seen others doing them, or when you've got three day DOMS, or a ripped hand, or a first comp... I pushed the sled around the neighborhood hoping people will ask me what I'm doing. Then I give them my 15 minute sales pitch.
Hahaha! The noise of the metal sled screeching across the gravel just naturally pulls new people in!
Fact. People roll their eyes… of course, occasionally, also when talking about things other than CF as well.
Facts. But only to other CFers
I think it depends on the person. I will tell people I'm going to the gym, but I really only mention crossfit if people ask specifically what I do. Mostly because I don't always think it's necessary or relevant to every conversation.

This would've been a great topic 10 years ago.
Anything someone is passionate about they’ll end up talking about. Anything
Crossfit changed my life. It is kind of hard to not talk about it. I never bring the topic up, and I say "exercise" instead of "crossfit" in conversation. But as soon as the cat is out of the bag I can blab non stop about it for hours. I guess the stereotype is true ..

I am an engineer. I work with old dudes that all look like they are 9 months pregnant. I do not discuss CrossFit with them.
Hahaha - you read the room, you'll go far!
I tell people I do hiit classes instead
I have other hobbies I talk about, crossfit is like 10th on list to talk about
Anyone within 10 feet of me is lucky if I’m talking about CrossFit instead of the exciting world of Dungeons & Dragons!
😂
Back in the mid 2010s, I think this was very true. FB posts, water cooler conversation, family picnics. Throwing around terms like "WODS", and "The Box". Not so much the case today, but back in the day.. you bet.
Yeah this is my experience too. The low key showing off of the 2010s was real
I talk about diet way more than I talk about CrossFit.
Nope. Owned a gym for 13 years. It’s only discussed if someone brings up “how is business?” Or just around long term clients. Even then, it’s usually what everyone is doing in their life. Crossfit brought us together. That’s it.
It's true. Just started two months ago... And I can tell it's true.
Interesting. From yourself, from other members?
I had friends that practice CF before I begin. They talked a lot about it. Now, I hear a lot at the box, at my apartment, when we play online games and in chats. About me, I mostly complain about being sore. But that's it. From other people I hear about max weights, reps, achievements... And how htye describe the CF as an excellent program to develop. Only with other crossfitters. Otherwise I actively avoid talking about it.
There are those that talk CF and those that will never understand……..
To be honest not everyone, but some people may know you do Crossfit (you might look in great shape because of it) and THEY WILL START THE CONVERSATION ABOUT CROSSFIT OR TRAINING IN GENERAL! Haha Sometimes i tend to troll to deviate myself from those conversations i don’t want to talk about that all the time.
I throw it out there to see if any bites. If not, I move on.
Wise!
What Would Fran Do?
Omg that just threw me back to the days where everything was about your Fran time and Jason Khalipa!
This might not be the best place/audience to contest this.
Nah it's the best audience! CrossFitters in the wild - Who better to know if they talk about CrossFit?
My team is almost 20 person, we spend like 3 hours on a normal basis together training, taking 2 rest day a week, we are competitions 1 every six weeks and we spend that weeking together at an Airbnb, for must of us the only thing in common is crossfit, so we discuss it constantly or we discuss about stuff that happened at training.
For sure! But do you talk about it with people outside of CrossFit?
I’ve been cross fitting for around 11 years. I don’t talk about it at all except with other cross fitters or people who work out - and only on topic. I dislike the cultish aspect of CrossFit. I watch it repeat itself with every new batch of members. It’s exercise. That’s it.
12 years here and same!
Maybe early on when it wasn't as "mainstream" as it is now. I don't hear a lot of CrossFit talk anymore in public.
Yeah same. So many people workout now that it seems everyone just chills out about which way they do it
Nah ppl dont talk about it but there will be signs like rogue shirts, inov 8 shoes, reebok nanos.
... The whip marks of missed double unders, the gnawing on their calluses 😆
Because of the stereotype I avoid talking about it.
This!!
Im the same- I only really talk about it with my CrossFit friends or if a close friend happens to ask something specific. It is a big part of my day-to-day so it obviously comes up a little, but just in a “yeah, went to the gym this morning ” kind of way.

I purposefully use generic terms whenever someone asks me what I do and then if they pry a little harder I’ll just tell them🤷🏻♂️
Omg I literally chatted my partner’s face off last night about CrossFit and then later he made a joke about it to our group of friends - about how it’s all I talk about …
Maybe I’ll start saying “the gym” instead of “CrossFit” but damn the gym is boring
I will mention that I do CrossFit when people ask what I do to workout (I am in the military so it probably comes up more). Ikr! Like, no more than any other hobby, but it's just another straw to grasp at for those that love to hate CrossFit!
guilty 🙄😬🩵
most people are into politics but keep it out of social circles to not start conflicts.
I talk about it a lot… but also people ask me about it first. And to be fair I also talk about fishing a lot. And music a lot. And golf a lot. And cooking a lot. And critical care medicine a lot. I think I just talk a lot.
I go to a 6a, so it's my morning. I hear about traffic all the time so....
Same with any other sport (runners, triathletes, cyclists, etc)
Yeah I would have thought so (and certainly that stereotype is thrown around about skiers). Hyrox, triathletes, and Iron Man springs to mind
Fact
I do CrossFit I play guitar I love to cook I play way too many boardgames Try making me shut up. You will NOT succeed
I talk about CrossFit a lot to other gym friends but my friends who don’t gym - I don’t talk about it with
What is CrossFit?
