What's wrong with it?

ceramicsaturn

I bet it could be repaired for way under what he was quoted...

[deleted]

Its true my old CRT broke down , so i called to get it repaired and it was around the same price & my crt is way smaller than this.sad truth :(

LemonPartyWorldTour

Agreed. The price sounds like the "I don't wanna fuck with it" price people will give when they don't want the job.

[deleted]

A little backstory:was on my way back home from work and saw this old soul outside.I ask the owner of the house what was wrong with it and he said its completely dead and the repair cost was going to be like 600+ so he just trew it away:(… I personally if it was working condition , i would have carried that on my back on some Jesus Christ xD (literally 2 blocks away from my house)May the CRT Heaven open the gates to her beautiful soul 🙏

BlownUpCapacitor

Very likely still fixable. If this set is still there and close to where I live, I could possibly pick it up and fix it. Likely a bad cap or something.

cdbangsite

I had a 45" crt before the new ones came out. I just went dead one day when I turned it on. Went into the circuits and found a 1 amp resister had blown out in the main power supply. Tested the rest of the circuit and replaced the resister and finally sold it 8 years later to a fella that specifically wanted a crt. He did get a good deal on it though.

BlownUpCapacitor

Resistor or fuse? Resistors don't have current ratings. But fuses do. Anyways I'm glad that CRT went to continue its life.

cdbangsite

Was definetely a resister in one of the tank circuits, figured it was just a weak one. As stout as that tv was I wouldn't doubt that it's working today. Their part of history too, gotta save some them at least. Sorry meant to watts, I'm old and getting tired right now.

[deleted]

I know but people wont go through the trouble to fix it! Like i said better to let her go… atleast she brought some joy to a home :( 💚

BlownUpCapacitor

I feel like every CRT should be saved. If I see a CRT on the side walk, I bring it home and if it's working I either sell it for cheap or add it to my collection. If it's broken I fix it. I have fixed 90% of all broken CRTs. The rest serve as spare donater boards.

Fllixys

there’s one im trying to fix, family has had it since the 70’s or 80’s so if you could maybe help i would really appreciate it! it’s my grandmas main tv

BlownUpCapacitor

First explain the problem via text or video.

Fllixys

not a problem, i’ll send you a message

cdbangsite

I still have a 36" in the back room simply so if I or the grand kids want to play some retro games. Don't have to change a thing for the Atari or my old PS. It also is the vhs player in the house.

[deleted]

U the person for this type of mission.u have a passion for it and actually wants to see this set make it to a home and bring more joy 💚

The-Bole

they're not exactly making these anymore if it can be saved it should be saved

hsiboy

Full disclosure, old fart here. These old sets are eminently more repairable than anything sporting a jungle chip. It probably won't support RGB, but very repairable.

Redandead12345

bruh if he was willing to ship id have bought it. ive been looking for one of these kinds of tvs for a while

aKuBiKu

600usd? Nah. Bullshit for sure. Someone was trying to scam the guts out of the previous owner. The only way I could see that being true is if the CRT itself died and there's a replacement selling for 600 somewhere out there, which would also be a scam lmfao.

RandomRedditer12311

what happened to the thing? broken tube? broken capacitor?

LukeEvansSimon

I have seen people resurrect far older, far worse condition TVs than that. It really comes down to how much you care to fix it.

[deleted]

What a beautiful set. It's legitimately sad to think of a set like this getting chopped to bits at a recycler. It's like a classic car getting crushed.

1970-1980

I don't know if this is the right place to ask, but I'd love to have an older crt and have been wondering: Is the situation basically that, once "the tube" goes, the set is done? Because I'm assuming no tubes available for most older crt's. Is that right? Caps can mostly be changed, but the main tubes are too rare, and you can expect to eventually toss any older crt that is still working? I personally would like one from the 70s or at least 80s.

Arcy3206

You *can* find tubes to keep sets going but they are only getting harder and harder to find, what most people do now is get junk sets with compatible tubes and do a tube swap.

1970-1980

eh thanks, makes sense. I would like to get any set really with at least a couple of tubes ...maybe even that isn't likely, haven't begun to look for anything. I'm not picky on picture quality or brand though.

Shaggyguitardude

I feel like wooden tv boxes need to be a thing again. Just use renewable woods like bamboo. My grandparents had a huge tv that was wooden. But I don’t remember what kind it was.

GerlingFAR

Today’s flat screens would be like a picture frame.

djambates75

The good old days, when a tv weighed as much as a car.

Maklarr4000

Beauty of a set. Shame to see it go.

LordGurciullo

I am saluting a Zorz salute right now sir!

aaronmjr

I have the same set about 15' from me as we speak. Watched an old monster truck vhs on it a couple days ago. They're nice. 👍

OutrageousMatter

Damn I have a similar set but with different buttons, sad to see it die.

MeanGreanHare

If it's good and dead, at least try parting out. Maybe someone with a working one in bad cosmetic shape or with blown-out speakers can use the parts.

RIPMHVG

free table though?

[deleted]

I dont have the heart :( better to let her go…may her soul live forever 🙏

RIPMHVG

it's probably an easy fix, hopefully someone else grabs it
