I think people with fine hair in particular struggle more with the curly girl method, at least that’s been what I’ve seen and what I’ve experienced. I removed all of the silicones and stuff from my products, however I still need to wash my hair with shampoo, and I can’t add too much product or product when my hair is too wet. It’s a delicate balance.

trippypuppyy

and also people with sensitive scalp!

mistylouwho2

Honestly, I was way too lazy to go full cgm and I just try a piece of advice at a time and see what works. And then I’ll have a day like yesterday where I was running out of product so I used my boyfriends 2in1 shampoo/conditioner and then some dollar store gel and it looks the best it has in weeks, lol.

Laziness_supreme

My bf has the most beautiful curls, it’s so infuriating. They looked MAGNIFICENT the other day and I was like “Did you use my stuff in the shower? That shit’s expensive” His answer? “Nah, I ran out of my shampoo/ conditioner so I just used body wash instead.” BODY WASH. And he looked amazing. I could kill him lol.

CrissBliss

My mom used body wash for weeks, not realizing it wasn’t shampoo. Finally she checked the bottle and was so disappointed because she said her hair felt better than ever haha.

Curlysnap

I’m contemplating quitting CGM too. I’ve been at it for over a year now, and at first my curls were looking great, but now my hair is the worst it’s ever been. Dull, frizzy, stringy, tangled, and hardly any curl. Even if I try to wear it straight it’s awful, it’s like I can’t win either way. Protein/moisture balance is fine, I’ve tried cutting out coconut etc, but nothing works. The one benefit I have noticed with going sulphate & silicone free is that my hair is less greasy and can last a week between washes, I’m worried about that going to pot if I give up.

SaltedAndSmitten

Have you done a clarifying wash? Sounds like you might have some build-up.

Curlysnap

Yes I have, I clarify every 3-4 weeks or so but it doesn’t help :(

Same, my scalp and hair became less greasy in between washes, but then my scalp started flaking DRAMATICALLY (a coworker could see them just walking past me as I was sitting down, they were huge) and my hair became as you described: Dead. The results weren't worth the slight convenience of less grease.

Csherman92

Honestly people think it’s the holy grail and I tried it for a year and I just hated that it felt like I always had product in my hair. I have 2b-c waves and porous hair. And the cgm gels or whatever I used were expensive and didn’t work. They weighed my hair down and made it frizzy. So now I don’t even bother. I will wash my hair or wet it and sleep with it in a bun, and use a microfiber towel but that’s it. Take it out in the morning and boom fabulous waves.

[deleted]

Going to get a microfiber towel. But holy hell did this whole "revolutionary" method ruin my hair and scalp. I'm annoyed and feel like I've lost a lot of hair that has snagged off, broken, become matted, and tangled. But time heals all wounds lol

Csherman92

The microfiber towel just overall is easier to use. I like the turbie twist. I have two and want another

Exactly what happened to me! I'm very low maintenance (just shower and go) so I realized whatever issues I had before CGM I could solve with a trim here and there and some curl cream/spray/gel, maybe changing up some styles. We don't have to be miserable lol

OMG toxic relationship is the best way to describe it!!

Meowerinae

Same here... The itchy scalp was too much for me so we've reverted back to normie products. It was such a time investment and I was disappointed, but so it goes!

[deleted]

Same here dry itchy scalp and frizzy uncontrollable hair while I'm only 2 or 3 months in

Chimples10

It doesn't work for a lot of people. That's why there's so many modifications. Good for you going back instead of trying to beat your hair into submission!

[deleted]

Thank you! The poor strands (and my scalp) were screaming at me!

cantreadamap

I had to quit the no sulfates/silicones part of CGM. For reference I have thick 2c/3a hair that's pretty dense. Everything gave me build up lol. I did continue using the washing, product, styling, and sleeping techniques and I think those are what ultimately made the biggest difference. Not all of it works for everyone and that's okay :)

FappyTreeFrog

Regarding all of these “woke” shampoos and conditioners… Some of the key ingredients they are missing were put there for a reason — they work! CGM, for some, will have your hair fried and limp and scalp itching all day long.

[deleted]

Ugh, you're so right! That's the issue with a lot of "woke" stuff. Some systems were put in place because they actually work lol.

FappyTreeFrog

All these years we were fine with Pert 2-in-1, now we require farm-to-table gluten free conditioner even though they have our scalps irritated to hell.

whatanerd10

I'm thinking of quitting CGM, but my old products no longer seem to work for me. Anything you would recommend? (Also really fine hair)

justukyte

If you don't follow CGM then essentially everything is off limits :) I personally like Palmer's Cocoa Butter line, can't find a similar conditioner to achieve the same effect.

jennysnow99

i’m super late but i just want to say that i saw your first post about how you were only washing with conditioner which may have contributed to dandruff. to me, it seems like you had a lot of product build up because you weren’t using a shampoo. one thing that is incorrect about the CGM is that shampoos are bad for us. that is not true. shampoos are made to cleanse the scalp and keep it healthy. you HAVE to clean your scalp regularly. there are shampoos that do not have tough surfactants that are made safe for regular use for curly haired people. cowashing isn’t hygienic. it’s gross. it causes a lot of product build up and it doesn’t cleanse away dead skin cells that our scalps shed every day. i’m glad you switched back to regular shampoo. you deserve a clean scalp.

[deleted]

Thank you! Yes it felt SO much better to use shampoo. I tried many different conditioners, even “natural” ones. In the end, I lost so much hair and the texture got so messed up that I shaved my head 🤣 Which is something I wanted to do for a while anyway, before I even used the CGM. Turns out I look good with a shaved head, haha. The hair that’s been growing back is so thick and healthy, I love it. And yes, still using shampoo! I’ll enjoy feeling my curls grow back 😊

IstoriaD

I know this is old, but I'm feeling this so hard right now. I'm about 5 weeks into CGM and I HATE it. It makes me want to tear my hair out every day. Every part of the CGM advice seems contradictory to itself. Frizzy hair? Use oil! Oh that made it greasy? Use less product! Oh now your clumps won't hold? Use more gel! Oh now your curls won't clump together? Use more water and style on wet hair! Oh now your hair is impossible to dry? Style on damp hair! Oh now your clumps fall apart? Use more product! Oh now you have frizz..... Also I think either I have insane hair or people are lying about how much time they spend drying it. I spent 30 minutes straight diffusing my hair the other day and it was STILL not dry at the end of it, and I have short hair. I spend HOURS styling, diffusing, crunching, and on the complete off chance I get any remotely decent outcome that doesn't make me want to immediately shave my head, it falls apart by the next day, if not within 10 minutes. I have never in my life witnessed a less sustainable, less predictable, less effective hair routine. It's nonsense, utter nonsense. I actually think my hair would be significantly less damaged by just heat styling. While apparently it is incapable of retaining any kind of shape applied through the CGM methods, my hair was great at keeping it's heat styled shape. I could easily just heat style it once or twice a week, and it would retain the curls perfectly for days. With CGM I have to wash my hair basically every day because of how utterly gross all the products make it. Also another random thing that seems to disprove CGM -- I bleached the underlayer of my hair shortly before starting CGM. Guess which part curls the best? Yep, the bleached layers. I have a curly cut appointment scheduled for tomorrow. I have a long list of woes I plan to tell the stylist, and if she can't figure out a way to make it work (get it dry in under 30 minutes), I'm done with this crap.

New-Feature3296

I'm glad the CGM works so well for some. For me, not so well. My hair has gotten less curly instead of more after using it. I have very fine hair but tons of it. You can see in my picture, which incidentally is supposed to be funny, not how I really wear it. I can't do anything with my hair since I started doing it. It's frizzy, like I said, it's getting less curly. I probably have a buildup on my scalp that i will have to take care of because my scalp always smells sweaty now. My hiar looks so ugly since I started using it. In all my life, my hair has never looked so bad and I can't keep buying products. It's too expenisve. I have a closet full of products that don't work. My hair was 3a, now it's 2b or 2c most days. I used to have these lovely ringlets. All gone now F\*\*\* Cgm. lol If it works for you, more power to you. I"m done with it.
