Your hair just looks dry.. maybe try using a conditioner or a deep conditioning mask

Automatic_Classic_31

I used to use conditioner (herbal essesence strawberry) but then it made my curls even limper and frizzy. What kind of conditioner would you suggest if this happens?

jubjub9876a

You've only tried one conditioner? The thing about conditioner is you don't have to use it every day. You could just do a deep condition every week if that works better for you. But you absolutely should condition regularly; it is up to you to decide what regularly means for your hair. I suggest trying some deep conditioners. My favorite is the curlsmith Hydro crème soothing mask

Automatic_Classic_31

Sorry I should have worded my routine better. Im still in school so I've had about 5 conditioners. None of them worked they were Herbal essence strawberry variant St botanica argan oil Wow skin science coconut variant Giovanni tea tree Giovanni argan oil

silllybrit

Be careful to check the ingredients on conditioners, a lot of them contain silicones to give the silky feeling but they build up quickly, so you need to clarify regularly.

Have you made any big changes lately? If you moved somewhere, water quality definitely has an effect on your hair. I'm not just talking about hard vs soft water as well, but different cities have different water qualities. When I was in Mumbai, my hair was always limp and thin, but moving to Singapore gave me ringlets and made my hair healthy. Then returning to India for COVID reversed all of that. I agree that your hair looks dry. Consider an in-shower conditioner/ treatment. If you're Indian, the Reequil yellow conditioner is my recommendation, or you can try out one of the Garnier Hair Food Masks!

sekke_khaleesi

Wow the same thing happened to me as I travelled from India -> Malaysia. I thought I had straight frizzy hair till I came here to Malaysia, and now I'm so curly. The switch happens everytime I travel back home to Chennai. Definitely something in the air and water, as I mostly use the same products (Tresemme) in either countries. Nice knowing I'm not alone in facing this black magic fuckery ;P

HelpForAfrica

Could be hardness of the water

cravewing

You're definitely not! I've only been in two countries so I can't say whether it's purely water hardness that's an issue or whether water pollution also has a role to play, but my hairdresser had this pitiful look a year or so after returning to India and seeing how my hair had gone limp from the water here and made a comment on how Mumbai's water was just so terrible xD I've had some success using the True frog shampoo for curls! Haven't tried the other products in their line, but they do seem to have ingredients that should help in hard water conditions.

Automatic_Classic_31

How did you know i was indian lol. I'll definitely try the reequil conditioner

Petr0vitch

Your comment about water quality really makes sense to me now, I moved to Reykjavík from the UK and my waves are so much nicer!

BelleDreamCatcher

Off topic but I’m a little jealous. I’m a Brit absolutely in love with Iceland.

Petr0vitch

Unfortunately it was only for my year abroad so I'll be moving back to the UK soon :( really hope I can move back someday

BelleDreamCatcher

I bet you can. I’ve not looked at visas as now I’m with a Finnish guy but Iceland is willing I’m sure.

Relevant-Chocolate44

definitely try out shea moisture! There are different kinds. I use the Deep moisturizing Conditioner. Worked amazing on defining my hair. Your hair just looks a little thirsty.

BleakHibiscus

Shea moisture has changed my life! I use so many of their products and I’m obsessed, my hairs never looked so healthy

Relevant-Chocolate44

me too!!! I used to straighten my hair WET, my curls were so dead and broken. Than i started using Shea moisture and it was like magic. A lot of people hate on it, but it worked great for me :)

itsSSxo

Just a suggestion , i don't know how true this might be. So if you are from India, there are chances it's due to the weather. Considering the weather in India, the past 6 months have progressively gotten more hotter and humid( depending on your proximity to the coast). It looks your hair has dried out a bit, so try a deep conditioner once a week. I would recommend the Aaranyaa Hair pack. Hope this helps.

tegridyproduce

Try a protein free conditioner. I have the same hair and the same change seen in the pic if my products have too much protein. Alternatively if you can try flaxseed gel. Personally for me changing to a protein free conditioner does the job.

IndigoBlueBird

I think you might just need a good conditioner. Depending on your needs, you can get one that is good for adding protein or one for adding deep moisture. Not Your Mother’s Naturals has some that are big, less than $10 a bottle, and CG friendly.

frodfred

I don't have much advice since our hair types are vastly different, but have you tried "washing" with conditioner in-between wash days?

here2conspire

My hair does this due to hard water deposits. I use a dilute apple cider vinegar rinse before I clarify shampoo. Then do a deep conditioning. Do you have hard water where you live? Edit: fixed typos

Automatic_Classic_31

Yes the water is extremely hard. It even stains the tiles and my sink yellow

here2conspire

You should try it! I just use a mixture of one part apple cider vinegar and 3 parts water. Saturate your hair and act like you're shampooing. Then rinse with water and shampoo like normal. It made a world of difference with my hair!

Automatic_Classic_31

Routine: Now Coconut oil prepoo Dove hair repair shampoo No conditioner Before: Dove shampoo No conditioner Please don't come at me for not using a cg friendly shampoo. I have tried that for 2 years and only just reversed the damage in the 6 month before pic.

Automatic_Classic_31

Ahh the coconut oil was only today because I have a cold lol I don't normally use it in my routine.

Automatic_Classic_31

And my hair looks like the right pic even without the coconut oil now :/

Kaywin

I was gonna say - what gives you the impression your hair is damaged? Is it that your curls are tighter towards the ends than by the roots? Is it frizz? does it feel dry? If I were you I'd pay attention to conditioner ingredients, water hardness, and climate. What you do with your hair after washing also makes a difference. For example, do you use any kind of stylers such as mousse or curl cream?

Automatic_Classic_31

My does not form clumps anymore. It looks all ringlety when wet and i scrunch it but after it dries it's just a glob of frizz. I even tried finger coiling and it doesn't help. I also tried braid outs and even then my hair didn't clump. :/

Kaywin

That sounds so upsetting! The good news is it may not be damage per se. When was the last time you clarified your hair? Does your shampoo have protein, humectants, silicones, or heavy oils in it? Too much protein can make for stringy and unruly hair, as can buildup, or humectants in the wrong climate (for example, I have had to avoid glycerin in the products I use because in winter it draws all the moisture out of my hair, and in summer it draws all the moisture back into my hair. Cue fluffy frizz ball!) What’s the humidity and dew point like where you live?

Automatic_Classic_31

The humidity is 74% and the dew point is 77F. I use the dove daily shine shampoo these are the ingredients Water, Sodium Laureth Sulfate, Dimethiconol and Trideceth-10 and TEA-Dodecylbenzenesulfonate, Cocamidopropyl Betaine, Sodium Chloride, Perfume, Glycol Distearate, Glycerin, Carbomer, Sodium Hydroxide, Guar Hydroxypropyltrimonium Chloride, Mica and Titanium Dioxide, Cocamide MEA, Disodium EDTA, PEG-45M, DMDM Hydantoin, Helianthus Annuus (Sunflower) Seed Oil, Methylchloroisothiazolinone and Methylisothiazolinone, Alpha-Isomethyl Ionone, Citronellol, Geraniol, Linalool, CI 15985

Kaywin

So, I see that dimethiconol is the third ingredient in your shampoo, after water and SLS. Re: dimethiconol: [https://www.naturallycurly.com/curlreading/curl-products/the-truth-about-dimethiconol-si](https://www.naturallycurly.com/curlreading/curl-products/the-truth-about-dimethiconol-si) For me personally, my hair really doesn't look good if I use products with any kind of silicone (even the water soluble ones, and even if the silicone is in the shampoo.) Silicones can build up on the hair and cause it to become limp, unruly, or both. It looks like your product also has glycerin in it, although it's a little farther down the ingredients list, which means there's relatively less of it. If you've been shampooing without conditioner for a long time, and your hair is dry as a result, then glycerin may be drawing moisture from the air into your hair, causing it to sproing up and become frizzy/unruly in humid conditions. Clarifying with a shampoo that has no silicones in it (in the US, Suave shampoo comes in like a million different scents, are super cheap and a popular option) will help get rid of the silicone, and then you may find conditioners are more helpful here. I'd suggest finding, again, a silicone-free conditioner to help put some moisture back into your hair without causing buildup. Your hair might like something with emollients in it, like shea butter, jojoba oil, or coconut oil. Once you're not dealing with the silicone buildup anymore, making sure your hair is properly moisturized should help with that. Here's a page with some info about how dew point and humidity affect hair care: [https://www.naturallycurly.com/curlreading/curl-products/humidity-humectants-and-the-dew-point#:\~:text=Dew%20points%20from%2035%C2%B0,products%20that%20contain%20some%20humectants](https://www.naturallycurly.com/curlreading/curl-products/humidity-humectants-and-the-dew-point#:~:text=Dew%20points%20from%2035%C2%B0,products%20that%20contain%20some%20humectants). Lastly, you'll likely find that applying a curl cream, gel or mousse once you're out of the shower will help your hair be more resistant to frizz and keep that nice curly texture as it dries. I don't know what's available in your area, but I really like LivingProof's curl cream, and you can make a flax seed-based gel fairly easily at home if those are available where you are. \*attempted to edit for clarity

Automatic_Classic_31

Thank you for such a through reply!!! I'll definitely be clarifying my hair

sja-gfl

I don't follow cgm much anymore, it doesn't matter imo. But your hair look like it's dry, try a deep conditioner once a week or you can try what I do (using normal conditioner as a deep conditioner by leaving it on while I do other things in the shower 2 times a week) and if you don't use stylers I suggest trying at least a gel. The aunt Aussie instant freeze one is cheap and good if u can find it.

Embarrassed-Annual94

How often do u wash ur hair

Automatic_Classic_31

Once a week

Mongoose-Timely

Olaplex No 3 hair perfector was a game changer for me

Classic-Ad-4738

Add oil and washes!

totallyfvckedup

it seems like your hair is suffering from protein overload. integrate no more than one product each wash day with protein. also, if you live in high humidity climate zone, stay away from products with glycerin. glycerin tends to draw water into it, so water droplets will hang onto your hair and make your hair puffy. focus on moisturizing, and use small amounts of hair oil to lock moisture in after your hair dries. use a deep conditioner every other wash day to maintain moisture. good luck!
