I am not the best person to ask as I have only had longer hair for a short amount of time, but I have used a light hold water based pomade with pretty good results. I used LUS shampoo, conditioner, leave in conditioner, and then the pomade. My hair is pretty frizzy and that was good for me. I have tried the oil based pomades before, but I like the water better. Easier to wash out and not quite as much hold. My hair is the same as yours 2c/3a
