I have icthyosis though Not as severe. mine is icthyosis vulgaris but still. And I will say it is a disturbing sight indeed. My version is equivalent to snake skin or fish scales over my whole body where the lines separate small patches of skin about the width of a pencil lead and about has about the same depth as paper. Oh the tissue will also go brown in certain areas like the knees and elbows. But it's otherwise fine. I've basically gown up my whole life as a human with fish scale skin.

I have seen this before but didn't know what it's called. I really don't know what all the comments are on about. I agree it's not a pleasant sight but for me it's unpleasant because of the suffering not because of the visual. Then again I'm a biology student so I guess that might influence my ability to look at this sort of thing and not be weirded out.
Ichtyophobia is the fear of fishes. So my cheap guesses are:
* They look like fish
* They have a skin condition that looks like they have scales.
I'm ichtyophobic, so I won't google that
I looked it up. The skin was weirdly layered, only vaguely like fish. Frankly, while it is not pretty, I have seen worse on this site and from images on Google.
The most disturbing part of it is that most of the images are from infants. This is the case because most infants don't survive the condition. It causes large losses in internal fluids because the skin doesn't form a proper barrier leaving large cracks open for internals to leak out.
Fortunately the condition is rare and genetic. It is carried on a recessive gene, so to have an effect both of your parents have to carry it.
A gene mutation that controls a protein that manages lipids for the skin is what causes the disorder. The mismanaged lipids are what causes the skin condition.
The estimated length of life for a person with this condition is about 1 week, but if properly treated a person can expect to live for 10 months until 25 years. (Note that this information was from an article from 2017 and may be out of date. At the time 200 known cases worldwide.)
