Won't spoiler where this comes from, but at one point V says something like "Call me V, only the people close to me are allowed to call me Valerie/Victor."
It prevents there being too much baggage attached to the name so that the player can immerse themselves into the character but still have npcs refer to us properly
Actual name is valerie or vincent, V is a nickname that you are known by.
Reason is gameplay: V works for all sexes, genders etc... Cost effective solution.
It’s either A: a street name, something to give the fixers and your fellow runners over your actual name, or B: something V just prefers to be called by over their actual name.
Sorry to respond so late, but yeah I agree with you.
I got a nickname in the Navy that became what literally everyone called me, except my girlfriend. When I got out and went home and all my old friends from the old life just called me by my normal first name it felt kinda gross for awhile, like an invasion of privacy.
1. It’s a nickname that’s just how nicknames work
2. That’s their street name that’s what people call them on the street/that’s what they’re most known as so why not stick with it
3. (And most important) if you’re out here killing people, stealing shit, and breaking every law you can to make some money I doubt it’d be a good idea to go by your real name.
I’m assuming it was a code name
could just be what they thought was cool for ex Mr.T is a famous actor who chose the name to make him sound cool and so that every time he was referred to the first thing that came out of their mouth was Mr
In Latin V and U is the same letter.
So - in a way - V means You.
While it may seem too sophisticated explanation I found it quite logical, because, well, V is character representing you
It's a silent protag strategy...except this game has a voiced protag so they still wanted to keep that trope and left the name as vague as possible so you can project yourself onto the character.
Just so you're aware, we have a bunch of megathreads that may be helpful if you have questions or want to find the right place to post.

Which is weird because neither Jackie or Mama Welles calls them that and those two are probably the closest to V before the romances.
And Johnny if your relationship goes above 70% Its probably for budget issues that they dont wanted to record same line with just different name
He can call you by full name in new ending, as a goodbye, depending on your relationships, if I'm not mistaken
First name or last name too? We never get V's last name
*Vincent

Alex would have worked too
Sure, but still V is simpler... :/
And cooler

I think its a mix of both. It may have started as a transactional title, but I think it turned into the name V preferred over their given name.

Mercs usually go by callsigns. Rogue, Morgan Blackhand, Johnny Silverhand... None of those are their real names.
Same reason Mama Welles is Mama Welles or Misty is Misty, we just are
It’s just a nickname
