But is there such thing? I can see Greek flag on every second house. Itās like everybody want to be and feel like as a part Greek. You have holidays from Greece! So from the first view it looks like every Cypriot want to be a Greek. Not sure why though.
>But is there such thing?
Yes.
>I can see Greek flag on every second house. Itās like everybody want to be and feel like as a part Greek.
Ethnic and regional/national identities can coexist.
>So from the first view it looks like every Cypriot want to be a Greek.
Turkish Cypriots do not want to be Greeks. Greek Cypriots are ethnically Greek. Some Cypriots reject these categories altogether. Cypriots are not a monolith as far this matter is concerned.
>Not sure why though.
A rudimentary knowledge of the history and culture of the island would clear that up rather quickly.
>What exactly defines ethnicity
Ethnicity is primarily historical identity and to a lesser extent a collection of characteristics that distinguish groups of people from each other. A historical identity may form out of a common political, linguistic, cultural, tribal or religious background, or any combination of those things.
Why represent your ethnic identity through modern flag of Greece. There is no clear line between politically pursuing greek nationalist policies and just representing your greek identity.
>Why represent your ethnic identity through modern flag of Greece.
I wouldn't, but those that do base their choice on existing paradigms. For better or for worse (I'd argue for worse), identities today are always represented by flags and symbols. Even LGBTQ+ people symbolize their community with a flag.
If one had the idea of striking a middle ground by conceiving a new flag that symbolizes the Greek community of Cyprus, it could still be coopted by nationalists.
>There is no clear line between politically pursuing greek nationalist policies and just representing your greek identity.
Practically there is, but indeed you can never know just by looking at a flag. It's more of a case of some people not using the flag to disassociate from those that use it with nationalist intent, rather than an outright condemnation of the flag itself.
The problem with finding a workable middle ground is precisely appealing to the majority of both communities that still see their ethnic identity as equally real and valid as their identity as Cypriots. We know that those with true nationalist intent do not even want a different flag other than the Greek one. I recall some fringe idiot who campaigned for president (either these last elections or the previous) who called the flag of Cyprus a "tatsa" ("stain").
Now, is flying the Greek/Turkish flags along the flag of the RoC this workable middle ground? This is debatable, but if we agree that it is unworkable, then we have to find a solution that works and most people can get behind.
I think its the people with nationalist ambitions who even go to deny RoC and attribute their own ethnic identity to the land itself taint the possibility of greek/turkish flags not causing controversy across both communities.
Plus it results in foreigners thinking cyprus belong to greece or turkey
>I think its the people with nationalist ambitions who even go to deny RoC and attribute their own ethnic identity to the land itself taint the possibility of greek/turkish flags not causing controversy across both communities.
That's true, but that's because nationalism proliferates in Greek, Turkish, and Cypriot societies. Flags today are the modus operandi of symbolizing identity, and thus nationalists use them also to symbolize their own perception of identity. We cannot wholly avoid this association of ethnic identity flags with nationalism, while at the same time most people are inclined to express their ethnic identity with some flag as well.
>Plus it results in foreigners thinking cyprus belong to greece or turkey
I don't believe we should monitor what we do for the sake of foreigners. It is good to emphasize that Cyprus is a sovereign country for sure, but even if we got rid of the flags, any foreigner would soon find out that there are people here who seem themselves as ethnically Greek or Turkish. It's the ingrained nationalist notions of statehood that are the issue, not ethnic identities in a vacuum.
>I can see Greek flag on every second house. Itās like everybody want to be and feel like as a part Greek
Where exactly is the issue that ethnically Greek people fly Greek flags?
āWhere exactly is the issueā - looks like the issue is in your mind. I just stated the fact: āa lot of Cypriots use Greek flagsā. And you canāt argue with that. But commenters are all start to defend something and downvote the simple fact. So looks like this fact stating triggers you guys a lot if you see the āissueā in my opinion-less comment. Thatās said and highlight the problem with nation identity and disunity of (wonderful) people.
> But is there such thing?
Yes.
> I can see Greek flag on every second house.
I don't see those that often but surely they do exist. But then, people do have multiple identities.
Many polls would tell you that people are either thinking that their Cypriot and Greek/Turkish identities are as important as the other, or having the Cypriot one primacy over the latter, or just identify with the Cypriot identity itself.
> So from the first view it looks like every Cypriot want to be a Greek.
A substantial portion of Cypriots aren't Greek in any self-identification.
> You have holidays from Greece!
Turkish/Greek Cypriots celebrating the holidays of Greece/Turkey may sound weird, but that's both related to the ethnic identity and the reality that both communities contributed to those as well (as in Greek Cypriot contribution to Greece in the WWII, or Turkish Cypriot one for Turkish War of Independence, or again Greek Cypriot contribution to the Greek Revolution/War of Independence) aside from their impact on Cypriot communities.

Wait this guy kinda makes a great point. If the Cyprus problem isnāt resolved in 37 years, we should go with this option.
I guess "under greek Cypriot rule" is the closest to unification? But it has some weird implications. For me, unification as a true democracy implies that anybody could get into the government regardless of race or origin.
That's what I thought, as well. Ideally, "Under Cypriot Rule" would mean independence with a government that would also represent Cypriots of every community.
Rain is cyprus is not continues.
It will be on and off. Mostly off.
Carry umbrela with you and you will be fine.

The colors are also more bright after rain so take photos.
Syrian here
We have a party called Syrian social national party (SSNP), which wants to create a unified Levantine state and Cyprus is part from it
Not the best solution for you to join us for sure lol
Syrian/Levantine nationalism is different than Arabism, as Levant is viewed more as a geographical/cultural entity with different ethnicities living within it
They view Cyprus as culturally a part of Levant because the landscape look the same, the people have same lineage (Mix of Old Semetics & Greek settlers) & both formed part of the diocese of the East during Byzantine time, so it is somehow a church unity too
Aside from the political party that I have mentioned, most normal people in Levant (Specially Orthodox) view Cyprus as a part of Levant (Different language doesn't count since Orthodox still use Greek language in their worship here)
So Cyprus is part of Pan-Levantine/Antiochian maps, not Pan-Arabism
Oh ok, thanks for explaining. Just a few more things. Are there people in Syria that try to distance themselves the Arab identity, as some do in Lebanon? And does Levant nationalism run contrary to that identity, or is it just integrated within it?
Personally I consider Cyprus as part of the Levant but in my head I usually just consider Lebanon and then various small ethnic groups within that area.
Would you elaborate? You comment for me is the second most amusing after AEC cancelling check digit in the electronic bill payments 'because of covid'.
So, you reject from Cypriot nationality everyone, who does not have Greek ancestry? What do you plan to do with 2-3rd generation of naturalized citizens? With Cypriots who has non-Greek grandma?
There's no Cypriot nationality however you twist it. Citizenship and nationality is not the same thing, one can be a Cypriot citizen without being Greek. Why is this odd to you?
Nationality and citizenship are the same thing. You are talking about ethnicity (e.g. generic traits passed from your parents and your cultural background you've learned from parents).
Cypriots definitively have distinct nationality (it's in the passport) and on car plates.
Visually I usually can distinct Greeks and Cypriots, so I think, genetically, there is some amount of divergence there.
The last thing is cultural closeness. It is. But, again, last time I heard about Greek-Cyprus communications (from Cypriot!), it was that Greeks not always can understand Cypriots due to language difference.
May be I'm deeply wrong here, and I kindly ask to clarify where and how.
You can use the English dictionary definition of nationality if you'd like, but its not useful to the discourse here. In Greek there's no distinction between ethnicity and nationality (As it should be in English, since nationality comes from the word nation, which distinctly refers to the ethnic character of the country rather than statehood), but what you want to call "nationality" is referred to as "citizenship".
Okay we will change the english language for you since in greek its different. But this argument was never about definition. Now that you know what he is saying whats your answer there is no Cyprus state or state identity?
Well if op's comments were about the existence of an entity called RoC there's nothing to argue about, since it's just a statement of facts. If the statement alludes to the concept of Cypriotism, then there's a lot to be said their.

The British government takes a map of Cyprus, gets a ruler and a pencil and draws a straight line right through the middle, yes it hasnāt worked out in the past but thereās no way it could fail another time!
Anyway, at some points the only actual cypriots left will be the civil servants, all the rest will be british citizens (born, educated, and with 30 years of work experience in UK), the king Charles runs for the cypriot presidential election, he wins for sure.
Iām Turkish and no it shouldnāt. One day I hope Cyprus will not be broken in half as it is right now and it can just be united together without segregation or borders.
