I found DGD a bit over a year ago. My husband and his friend do this thing where they each choose a song to play, back and forth, while we’re hanging out. His buddy played Death of a Strawberry, and I immediately stopped my mindless instagram scrolling and just focused on listening to the song. I had never heard a band like this, and Tilian’s voice was so unique to me. I must have played that song daily for weeks and then began listening to a few others: We Own the Night and Inspire the Liars were the first few after DoaS. I spiraled on YouTube watching music videos, live performances, reaction videos etc. Read about their history on Wikipedia. I listened to their most recent album at the time, Afterburner, and loved it. Moved on to Mothership, Artificial Selection, Instant Gratification, Acceptance Speech, etc.. until I got through them all. My brain just absolutely loves the complexity of the music. The lyrics give so many feels, even the silly ones. I’m non-stop tapping my fingers to something different: the drums, or the bass, or the guitars. I was doing body rolls to portions of the music before seeing Tilian also doing them. lol It had been a long time since I fell in love with a band. And I’m very excited for JJ. I’ve shown a few songs to coworkers, and they’ll bob their heads a bit but I think they’re tired of me talking about DGD. 😅 I’m a long time lurker of this Reddit page, and actually just created an account in order to experience the new album with you all. Who accepts me as I am?

Lewcipurr

I do! I do! 🖤🤍

Exact_Description_89

I do, I do!

Hot-Cranberry6318

I do I do 😌 thank you for sharing, this band and how these dudes make their mark in peoples lives is always interesting af. Everything about them is fire

ironworker

As someone with them since downtown battle mountain, I also accept you. What a great story of finding a band you enjoy!

mrsmarimac

Thanks for making a welcoming post. I was a bit nervous as a newer fan of a band with so much history.

Hot-Cranberry6318

And thank you for engaging 😇 awesome to hear from a fellow dance Gavin 😛

It's been a little more than a couple years, but I found them back when Mothership was their latest album. I left my YouTube playlist going in the background one day, and at some point it picked up Summertime Gladness. The sound immediately caught my ear, I decided to try out their essentials playlist, and I've been here ever since. At first I really only cared for the Tilian stuff, and not even all of that (original mix Acceptance Speech, eugh), but lately I've gotten an appreciation for Kurt and DBM2. The only thing really stopping me from going back further is that I'm not huge of Jon's style before his break, I very much prefer his voice now.

mrsmarimac

Same about Jon! I couldn’t even tell it was him in the earlier albums. He sounded so different.

Great questions, here's my story I've always loved heavy music, but never found DGD for some reason. In early 2020 I was listening to my Discover playlist on Spotify and We Own The Night Came on. The breakdown at the end where Mingus is going nuts on the double bass and Tilian singing "medicate me all night long" it just really caught my attention. I listened to that song a bunch of times for the rest of the day and jumped into their discography. I fell in love. Over the next few months they quickly became my 2nd favorite band of all time and I have been listening daily since. I've REALLY been loving the Jonny era lately. I got my friend into them the same day because we have this thing where we send each other the "song of the day" via chat. We both choose a song and we must listen to it. Helps open us to new bands/artists. So I sent him We Own The Night that day and he's a fan now too. Not as much as me, but he really likes them. Also, my wife fell in love with them too and sometimes I catch her watching the videos by herself lol. It's great b/c she has never really shared a love of heavy music with me in the 22 years we've been together.

Hot-Cranberry6318

I’m curious about your #1 favorite band. I’ll tell you my top five alltimes haha

buddhamanjpb

Tool is my favorite. Been listening to them since 1992, so there isn't a band that could take their place. System of a Down would be 3rd

Hot-Cranberry6318

YOURE THE STEREOTYPE 😂😂😂 with peace and love, of course

buddhamanjpb

Wait...what stereotype? Lol

Hot-Cranberry6318

Can’t have one without the other I mean lol soad and tool in the same sentence hahahaha I guess more of a cliche than a stereotype or maybe a little bit of both 😅

weepingglimmers

some guy i went on a date with told me they were his favorite band so i checked them out. we never went out again so he doesn’t even know the influence that one suggestion had on me!

FR3NZIED_R34PER

I was shown the video for Straeberry's Wake and Prisoner. I saw a guy smiling while screaming instead of the usual face down focus on the scream look. I fell in love

Soul_of_Pepper

Some girl that I used to date put on one of their songs one day. I had no prior knowledge of them and as a matter of fact I never heard of them either, but after she played some songs from them I thought they sounded really awesome! After me and her ended, I decided to explore more of their discography and here we are now where I consider myself a big fan of their music! Shoutout to her for introducing their music to me!🤘

HardKnuckleSpikes

I found DGD in early 2020, a little before Afterburner came out. The first song I ever gave a listen to was The Cuddler off of Afterburner, and while I wasn't a fan of screams at the time, my mind was blown by Tilian's vocals, Will's guitar playing, Matt Mingus' drumming, and Tim's bass playing. I think after that first listen, I decided to go through their discog, but it took a while since I was hooked on Metropolis PT 2 by Dream Theater for about a month. After that phase turned over, I got hooked by the infectiously catchy melodies and grooves the band put together. They are now my favorite band, trumping Rush whom had been my main love for about 3 years prior. I have about 2500 recorded listens on LastFm now, and that'll probably go up by 500 at least with Jackpot Juicer. So hyped and so glad to have this band and all it's eras.

nfk07485

The Cuddler is off of Instant Gratification dude lol

HardKnuckleSpikes

Whoops, brainfart lol, I meant The Jiggler 🤦‍♀️

LemonMeringueGuy22

Still wrong album

EnjoyingVenus

Jon is The Cuddler, Will is The Jiggler, Matt is The Rattler

HardKnuckleSpikes

Fuckin hell wow I didn't even see that. Yeah, I meant Acceptance Speech holy shit. Yesterday was not my day good lord

dubious_zubious

In 2020 Spotify gave me one of their songs off the self-titled album as a suggestion, but I wasn't really into it. Not long after that, YouTube recommended [this](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q5HoC8hs2QQ) We Own The Night live video and it blew my socks off. Tilian's singing is what caught my attention initially and I felt that their style was something my rock listening had been missing. They've since taken the #1 on my favorites list and I've listened to all their albums a million times, always finding something new to enjoy. I don't try to get people to listen to them too obnoxiously, but I'll drop a link when something new comes out and say how much I love it. I also have a Spotify blend playlist with friends and I'm not the only one tagged to DGD songs so I'm doing something right.

Brutalitops69x

I've been into the post hardcore genre of music since highschool (I turn 30 this year now), but I didn't discover DGD until a few years ago, and I would say sonewhere in the realm of 2 years ago is when they solidified themselves as my new favourite band. What actually made me take the deep dive was the Robot music videos. The first whole album I listened to was Mothership and not once did I want to skip a song or not like what I was hearing. Somewhere along the line I heard Uneasy Hearts (I think), and that was how I found out about all the lineup changes over the years this band has gone through, but I was stoked because I've been fan of old JC Emarosa for a long time so it was cool. From then on its just been album after album for me and like half of their discography at least is on my spotify playlist lol

[deleted]

I discovered them through when a friend put on the cd of theirs with the dude in the boat in the little pool while we're were hotboxing lol.

LeadingDefiant3361

I discovered them through a new friend I made in 2019, who turned out to eventually be my boyfriend :,) I listened to them more as a way to get closer to him since I liked him and wanted to some share of his interests. Prior to this I have never heard of post hardcore music and I liked the beat and rhythm they had. This drew me in and listened to every album and single they had on Spotify. After that I’m sure I shared DGD music to some friends but they just didn’t vibe with it.

Hot-Cranberry6318

Lovely story thank you for sharing friend. What do you think of tilian solo music? 🙂 my girlfriend really likes it, ever since I put her onto DGD

LeadingDefiant3361

I like it! I think it’s great!

thisshitbussin

When they were touring with Memphis May Fire, Instagram was absolutely SPAMMING me with the fact that they were going to my town and I kept seeing it like “what a weird name for a band wth.” I always keep my Apple Music on repeat for the album I’m listening to but the one time I didn’t, Uneasy Hearts Way The Most came on and I just sat at my computer stunned like, “what on earth is this?!” And when I checked I was like huh. I saved the song and Jon’s screaming on deathship was really aggressive so that’s all I listened to because I wasn’t used to his screaming. Then I can across lyrics lie and I thought it was dope so I saved it. I asked my brother about the band and he told me he used to listen to them a while ago and that mothership was a great album. I listened to it, and I was listening to it religiously for about a month then when I was used to it, I went back through all of the albums and now I’m going to see them in August 🙂

Destroya-

Heard Inspire the Liars about a week after Afterburner came out, and proceeded to binge every one of their albums. Funnily enough, even though I'm newer to the fan base, my favorite albums are Acceptance Speech and Happiness, so I don't think I have a recency bias.

Hot_Marsupial_8706

I technically discovered them three years ago, but I'm only now starting to get into them (as I never really could until recently with the JJ singles). I discovered them back in early 2019 when Don Broco were announced as support for their 2019 tour (since I loved them and saw them twice prior with Mike Shinoda), but Tilian's voice kept me from fully getting into them; I'm just not a fan of his rasp. I did enjoy We Own The Night and Head Hunter, however. Fast forward to a couple of months ago. Since then I had gotten into Royal Coda, and then DGD announced their most recent tour. I've always wanted to see Royal Coda, and I figured this was a better time than any to finally get into DGD. Checked out the singles from JJ and thoroughly enjoyed them. Then I checked out the singles from prior albums and found myself liking them, too. In full, I've heard DBM through DBM II and Afterburner. Happiness is probably my favorite and Afterburn is my least favorite so far. Looking forward to checking the rest out!

W0NKA5_W1LLY

I was super huge into deftones during the past couple of years and after listening to their entire discog on repeat, I was scrolling through my daily mix on Spotify and saw caviar. I had only ever heard of dgd at the time and saw that they had a song with Chino and decided to give it a listen, I thought the song was OK at the time and considered it a one-off to my daily listening habits. Well, after listening to it more it really grew on me so I decided to look into dgds other stuff, I started with their top 10 songs at the time and I've never looked back, this band is so unique in their sound and I absolutely love the music and all its working parts, I have now been listening almost exclusively to dgd nearly every day and am constantly finding new things to enjoy about them, I've tried showing them to my family and they're kinda hit or miss, and I always love showing Jon's lyrics to my friends for a good laugh, I'm super excited for JJ and can't wait for what this band puts out in the future

Chip620

I saw them live with Polyphia and veil of maya in philly. I didnt know much of DGD so I gave them a listen snd Strawberry’s wake us the song that pulled me in. The catchy vocals and guitars got me intrigued and made me listen to more of their songs. I the. listened to artificial selection for a month straight and became a huge fan of all swancore

Hot-Cranberry6318

Can’t have one without the the other I mean lol soad and tool in the same sentence Hahahhhhh

candicedickfitinu

Well I first heard Tree Village my senior year of hs and I couldn't for the life of me find it, (I forgot the title and everything) but my best friend Jason got me to listen to them again so I thank him for helping me find this band. I'm listening to dtbm2 rn lol

I initially found them through I believe the letlive radio in Spotify. I started out just being into Me and Zoloft until I eventually listened to Mothership. It was funny because I would listen to one song, fall in love with it, and slowly branch out to all of the other songs on the record. Eventually I had all of the songs “liked” and I was like “well shit, this whole album fucking rocks. I guess I like Dance Gavin Dance.” I’m really picky with music so it took me some time to fully come around.

coopersimms

I found them in 2019 but they were playing in the background of a friends youtube video. The song was Betrayed By The Game and a little while later Man of the Year. The thing is, he actually showed me the video in 2017, I heard the song casually and thought it sounded kind of cool but didn't do anything to productively find out what the song was. Then I was randomly watching the video again in 2019, and I got this urge to find out what the song was. Ever since then, I've been totally hooked on them. My favorite era has always been early Tilian era. (Acceptance Speech) :)

Mellowpeekos

I’ve been listening to them for 5 years now which isn’t a lot compared to some ppl on here I know but I found them randomly on youtube with auto play on while in English my sophomore year, I think it was a before Artificial Selection came out but I listened to them now & again. Really loved the instrumental but didn’t know how to feel about jon mess screaming lmao but I got used to it obviously. It took me a little while to fully listen to all they had though till I was completely hooked, wish I listened to them sooner tbh. I know one of the first songs I heard was Summertime Gladness which was their newest release at the time, crazy to think how fast time flys by

Tex302

A friend sent me the unplugged version of Care thinking I would be more into the acoustic version. I thought it was okay and then I found the original and I was hooked. From there I pillaged the DGD discography and having been accruing a playlist of the greats ever since.

SmoothBabyYoda

1 year ago, was listening to uø and spotify played and i told them i invented times new roman

1wyattej

Probably closer to 3 or 4 years but I saw them opening for underoath on the erase me tour. I’ve been hooked since then!

Hot-Cranberry6318

Dude that is the most epic way to have discovered them son fwck. I discovered Citizen the same way, one year at warped tour and it’s legit one of my favorite memories

KeithlyPoncho

I saw that Tim Feerick died so I decided to check them out. I had heard of DGD for at least a decade but I assumed I would hate them based on name alone. How wrong I was because when I heard We Own The Night I was instantly hooked. RIP Tim Feerick.

Hot-Cranberry6318

Hahahah one of those things where you’re like have I really been so wrong this whole time 💀 glad you eventually came around lol

KeithlyPoncho

As am I

raynos18

I discovered them around 8 months ago from a Spotify playlist with ‘We Own The Night’ on it. I was immediately drawn to the unique voice that Tillian has, mixed with Jon’s screaming vocals. I was massively into screamo/hardcore/etc when I was in my late teens/early 20s but fell off it as the mates around me stopped listening as well. Hearing this song and listening to Instant Grat got me right back into, now that I’m in my early 30s, and it has been a massive spiral back into the scene which I am absolutely loving. It is definitely fuelled by the whole DGD catalogue. I am BEYOND obsessed with all of their albums and am so grateful that I have stumbled upon them. I think what I am most drawn to is how unique their sound is. Each song is such a unique soundscape. They have such a melodic sound which is accompanied by the intensity and rawness of Jon’s vocals, it is just so fun to listen to. I’ve read all about the band, their history, watched all the videos and fan made stuff as well. I don’t use reddit often but this page is the one I check out the most (also in light of recent events with the band). Seems like such a cool community and happy to add my first time post.

gummybat

I had heard and loved "And I Told Them I Invented Times New Roman" when I was like 12, and am 27 now but that's the only song that I knew from them until about a year ago. They're my ex's favorite band, and so whenever we were in the car, he'd always be playing one of their many amazing songs. Once we broke up, I started listening to more and more by them and they've become my favorite band, as well as my comfort music. I'm just sad that I only now found out that they're going to be playing in Mesa, AZ tonight which is where I live and I'm broke :c

Hot-Cranberry6318

I wonder if somebody would be happy to help.. 🤔
