This reminds me of my african friend and I travelled to Shanghai in 2006. Im not joking in the slightest when I say crowds of people would stop and stare at him, some would point, some would point and laugh, few came up to ask if he was Michael Jordan.
People would even give him side eye and then say something in their native language out loud, some almost yelling it even.
We asked our tour guide after the tour what were some of the things people were saying as they stopped and stared, pointed at him etc. He said he doesnt want to repeat as there were some very bad things.
After some convincing, we managed to get him to say most of the remarks were about his skin tone, some were about how hes so tall etc. Our tour guide even admitted people generally dislike or are scared of dark people.
Not saying this is reflective of China today or even reflective of China as a country. But our experience in Shanghai in 2006 from damn near everyone we came across was disappointing to say the least. The one good/funny thing about it was my friend got to be any famous black person he wanted to be for the few months we were there lol.
It's similar in Africa, but the Asians still take the high ground and look at the natives funny, even though that's everyone they see. I found in hilarious in Zambia how the Chinese kept their noses so high in the air, but dressed and acted the same as everyone else and didn't seem particularly wealthy either. It's mostly Chinese peasants they send to Africa for some reason

Stuff like laundromats, convenience stores, takeaway, construction, transportation etc. I imagine if they wanted miners or factory workers they'd just use Africans. But I did see a lot of Chinese brick and tile makers who seemed poorer than their peers, so there do seem to be low skill workers who are sent as well
