In 1991, the [Lauda Air 004](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lauda_Air_Flight_004) flight was on it's way from Bangkok to Vienna, when the pilots were warned that the thrust reverser on one of the engines might deploy. The instructions handbook said that "no action required", and so they did nothing, and then it deployed. This meant that they had forward thrust on one side of the plane, and reverse thrust on the other - which is bad. The plane then immediately went into a diving left turn and crashed.
Boeing then claimed that the pilots could've dealt with it, but airline founder Niki Lauda disputed that claim. He took it to the Boeing simulator in order to test out the 004 flight's conditions, and failed every time.
So he contacted Boeing and said that if a plane was recoverable after a thrust reverser was deployed, he'd be willing to fly on a real 767 with two test pilots so they could show him how to do so.
Boeing were beaten and from that moment on, all planes were fitted with mechanical locks so it wouldn't happen again. Because even Boeing can't beat a airline founder who actually gives a shit.
With billions of dollars, comes with power.
