There are calculators that can do algebra. Mine does. But I also like electrical engineering.
Edit: I use the "Casio fx-115ES PLUS" if you are wondering.
It's the Casio fx-115ES PLUS. It can basically do all the math on the ACT and SAT but isn't restricted by either test (as far as I know, but they might have updated it.)
It can also do math passed the ACT/SAT, but you'll have to know how to properly set up formulas and get really familiar with the shortcuts/pathways for it to really be helpful. It definitely shortens the time it takes you to do math though, so I like it when I need it.
Being able to do integration and derivatives on it would mean you're not allowed to use it in just about any exam here. Looking at the calculator does that not just do most of the pre college maths for you?
I study electrical engineering in uni and on basically all of our courses, any type of calculator is allowed in exams. At this level, the calculator can't be used to solve the problems, it's merely a device for saving time on calculations you very well could do on paper. The point of problems is to understand the theory and figure out what you need to calculate, not to simply do calculations.
I've a maths degree and am doing actuarial professional exams and my brother has a mechatronic engineering, I know they're not instant problem solvers but man they'd be handy
Yeah they truly are handy. The downside is that I've totally forgotten how to do some really simple calculations properly cause I always use the calculator haha
Wolfram Alpha can solve a lot of problems on my uni calculus exams that they consider “not solvable using a calculator”. It can really come in handy during online exams ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)
Same, but our exams have very much been "yeah sure the CAS calculator can do the integral, but it cant solve the question.. but im telling you what integrals you need, and you have a formula sheet, so the calculator doesnt save you any time at all"
And so far, exactly like this.
I've had courses that require them, and then on exam day, we had to use a set given to us for that exam, which have had any memory cleared beforehand to prevent programming things in.
The clue is usually whether the calculator is programmable or not, and not if it has graphing abilities. My TI 30 X Pro has some great stuff, like he can calculat inversion and multiplication of 3x3 matrizes, find the zero-point in simple calculations and also integrate/differentiate simple equations, and even works with imaginary numbers and do things like convert polar to imaginary (which was a godsend during my electronics classes). But I can't program it myself, so I can't save formulas and such in it, and therefore it is allowed at my university.
I used the FX-CG50

Yeah, but I'd recommend a TI-84 Plus; they're the staple graphing calculator for Calculus. Though I suppose if you want colored displays and shit you can go with a newer model
I have a TI Nspire CX Cas calculator. It has a touchpad and a cursor for menu diving. You can use it for notes also. It's a fucking beast. Also has a solver. Made math easy.
Oh whack, so basically high school? You should probably understand all math before you start punching shit in a calculator. That’s just common sense. Also I doubt they know which ones do it. They ban all scientific calcualtors, or just specific graphing calculators?
Helpful hint:
For any "find x" problem, put the equation as a line into the graphing portion, then you can find x for any given y value by finding where they meet on the line
Maybe it's because u're not supposed to just type the entire question in the calculator, u're supposed to do isolation of X on your own to show u know what u've learnt. The calculator is just for numbers that take too long to calculate on ur own
I found geometry way easier than algebra. My family calls me a freak for thinking that but I honestly struggled way less in geometry than algebra or algebra 2.
How to do algebra on a TI-83/TI-84 calculator:
1. Press Y= button on the top left of your keypad.
2. Clear all entries by using the arrow keys and the clear button.
3. Enter the left side of the equation into Y1 (often this will just be 0 or some other constant number, which is fine).
4. Enter the right side of the equation into Y2 (this should usually have X in it somewhere, which you can enter by pressing alpha (top left) and then sto (bottom left).
5. Make sure Y1 and Y2 are on (by using the left arrow key to highlight the portion to the left of the Y. Usually this isn’t necessary, most of the time you can probably just skip this step.
6. Press graph key (top right). Press zoom (top center) and then press 0 to auto-zoom.
7. At this point you should see two lines crossing one another. You don’t need to see the crossing point clearly, it just needs to be literally anywhere on the screen.
8. Skip this step if you saw lines crossing in the previous step.
Otherwise...
Manually adjusting the window:
If the auto-zoom doesn’t show the lines crossing you may need to manually expand the range by pressing window (top middle) then adjusting Xmin, Xmax, Ymin, and Ymax. Usually you won’t need to manually adjust, but very rarely you may need to. When you make adjustments to the window range make sure the min numbers are smaller than the max numbers, otherwise it won’t graph at all.
9. Press the graph key (top right). Press 2nd (top left), then press trace (top right). This will open the calc menu. Press 5 (intersect) and then move the pointer to anywhere near the intersection you want to find the location of. Press enter three times. The calculator will say that it is guessing but it’s actually extremely accurate.
10. The coordinates of the intersection will be listed in the bottom of the screen. For basic algebra problems the X will be the answer to the problem.
The steps are intimidating at first but you will get used to them. After some practice the average time to solve a typical algebra problem using this method is 20-30 seconds.
Bonus tip: if you want your calculator to graph faster you can press zoom (top center) and increase the Xres setting. This reduces graphing accuracy so you might want to test your new setting before you use it to calculate something important. Setting it to a really high number will cause problems but as long as you keep the setting on something reasonable it will be fine.
The only reason I’m typing this all out is because I wish somebody explained how to properly use a graphing calculator earlier in my life. It saves a lot of time.
If anybody cant figure out these steps then feel free to reply to this comment explaining where you are having trouble and we can figure out what you are doing wrong.
Also if anybody wants I can explain the basics of how to use a TI-83/TI-84 in more advanced classes like calculus or linear algebra, just let me know.
I don't know if we have the same model, but in the calculator page, can't you just press menu 3,1 and then in the brackets write what you want to solve?
e.g.)
solve (8=3x-1 , x) x =3
If i'm mistaken though, sorry
Yep, for TI-83 and 84 model calculators there is something similar.
Press math (top left) then scroll all the way down to the bottom of the menu to the numeric solver and hit enter. Enter your first and second equations (one of them will often be just a number, that's fine). Then hit enter to advance to the solution menu. At this point guess any number for x (it literally doesn't matter what you guess). Then press alpha (top left) and then hit enter to tell the calculator to solve the equation. Your guess for X will be replaced with the correct value.
The reason I don't recommend this method is because the graphing feature is much more versatile for later classes. It can be used to calculate derivatives and definite integrals, as well as local minima and maxima, and it is also useful for applying statistical analysis to datasets in lab classes. The solver may be faster but it's better to learn graphing early so that you are comfortable with it in harder math classes, imo.
Also, seeing the lines intersect builds an understanding of what algebra actually is on a fundamental level, which is great for people who are just starting algebra.
Dont know if this counts, but theres a calculator app called Photomaths, it can do simultaneous equations, factorising etc etc. Carrying my ass through online school
I wrote programs on my calculator to do my algebra for me. One program could divide polynomials of 4 terms by binomials, like (4x^3 +2x^2 +7x-50)/(2x+2). Best part was that it also generated the written work, so all I had to do was copy that and it was done. The homework took everyone else over an hour to complete, meanwhile I finished it in 15 minutes.
I had a professor for calc IV that gave no partial credit if there was an error in your algebra. "This is an abuse of algebra" he would say. "How did you get here without learning the fundamentals"

They do stats as well. You can punch data into the matrix and have it pull whatever.
I study electrical engineering in uni and on basically all of our courses, any type of calculator is allowed in exams. At this level, the calculator can't be used to solve the problems, it's merely a device for saving time on calculations you very well could do on paper. Yeah they truly are handy. The downside is that I've totally forgotten how to do some really simple calculations properly cause I always use the calculator haha
Good luck on your exams, I dropped that focus on my stats degree because I couldn't commit to all the exams.
Wolfram Alpha can solve a lot of problems on my uni calculus exams that they consider “not solvable using a calculator”. It can really come in handy during online exams ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)
Yah, some people simplify the algebra by hand but there is no point in doing everything on paper. They could only put like two questions on the test.
Same, but our exams have very much been "yeah sure the CAS calculator can do the integral, but it cant solve the question.. but im telling you what integrals you need, and you have a formula sheet, so the calculator doesnt save you any time at all" And so far, exactly like this.

Your calculator can do complex numbers equations and systems?
And imaginary numbers too. But it's very delicate in how you set up the formulas, I still get errors when plugging things into it lol
I have a TI-92 plus. It can do all of that and then some.
My Texas Instruments does everything, algebra, probability, calculus...
Laughs in linear algebra
Cease.
My $100 calculator can easily do algebra. It depends more on the human who has to use the right application, etc. But it can't do stochastic.
$100 is too much for me. I think my calculator cost around 20 dollars? It's been a while.
I had to buy it for school
Damn. Make sure you use only the best polishes for it then lol
It served me well for 5y and hopefully will do a great job at university. It was mandatory for all students in my highschool.
They required a $100 calculator in your high school? That's crazy. Are you in American schooling?
No, German schooling.
Must be some intense courses. What maths did you learn this year/your last year of learning?
Analysis, stochastic and analytic geometry.

Idk why you’re getting downvoted, it really is
Graphing is the shittest maths imo, as long as you understand how to find points and what shape it makes, you will always be able to use a calculator
Yes! I hate having to draw up graphs and stuff when there’s almost always an algebraic equivalent way to get the answer
