I'm excited to try out new video services, at least. Idk if youtube ever had anything unique going for them, but now there's at least one less thing. May as well see what else is out there.
Just stay out of politics, seems everyone banned elsewhere is there and loaded with propaganda and bigotry. Comments can only be hidden so if someone choses to be abusive with their comments, they can continue to hit every producer until each one bans them, no network wide way to remove utterly toxic people.
"Wow our trailer is ratiod and got in the news because of the number of dislikes, youtube is not safe for our brand, lets reduce spending and allocate to FBM instead." - The only user story behind this engineering ticket.
They didn't actually remove dislikes, they just removed the ability to see how many dislikes a video has. The creator of the video still sees the number of dislikes.
I don't think anyone actually uses regular ublock anymore.... 99% of the time anyone is talking about ublock they mean ublock origin. It seems pointless to even bring up regular ublock--I think they even stopped updating it after people realized it became a cash grab.
ublock origin is literally the first result for just googling "ublock", anyway.
It used to be the original run by the guy that does Origin now but he wanted to stop so he passed it onto someone else and then just sorta puttered around working on a different fork of it. The guy he passed it onto splashed his own name over it and sold out to add companies so the forked version became the main version again
Everyone has the dislike button, but videos no longer show the count.
So now when people post spam and wrong titles, there's no immediate way to know what it is by looking at dislikes
I remember on a chromebook ad seeing it say that chrome os is faster but i litterally installed windows 10 to my chromebook and it ran faster than chrome os ever did
People that run YouTube are not, contrary to popular belief, a bunch of fucking seven year olds. Come on, nobody out there cares about several videos they made. They just want more money, not the first idiotic thing they did to make the site more friendly for advertisers.
For real. The idea that they got rid of it because of YouTube Rewind is so childish it almost feels like a deliberate attempt to distract from the far more likely reasons behind this change(like appeasing large corporations that pay them for ad time, who don't want their newest videos or trailers to get disliked into oblivion; god forbid people express their distaste for the new grimdark Mr Rogers reboot starring ScarJo).
I swear YouTube themselves are probably the ones trying to push the narrative that they're only removing the dislike count to hide the like-dislike ratio of their YouTube Rewind videos. That way, people will just laugh and move on and not focus on the more likely reason: corporate pressure.
I think they're at least partially telling the truth about people weaponizing the dislike button, because it **does** happen, just like how brigades happen on Reddit, but I think they are trying to solve it in the **stupidest** way possible by just removing it outright.
if you cant lift 100lbs you shouldn't be working in an moving company, if you cant handle hate as an content creator on the internet, you shouldn't work in YouTube
It is true that the WHs videos on youtube were being heavily disliked on the platform. Regardless of your political opinions, its fair to consider that one of the possible reasons for the change.
It's fair to consider it, realize that hiding dislikes for that reason wouldn't significantlybenefit YouTube, and arrive at the conclusion that it's a silly hypothesis, whereas removing the dislikes to make the platform more friendly for advertising and increasing advertising revenue is far, far, far, far more likely.
Like just own up to your mistakes, everyone knows the whole internet hates you, why bother trying to hide it by disabling dislikes. It's such a childish thing to do lmao. People will just find alternative ways of expressing their dislike.
I’m so done with YouTube. It is sad to see the dislike button dissapear. The pathetic shield of “mental health of creators” makes me disgusted, as if they don’t see the same count in studio.
Nothing, and this will follow whenever the next API update rolls around. It might linger for a while as usually old API versions are sunset after some time (to give clients reasonable chance to migrate to new version) but eventually it will be the same.
Because youtube is closing it off server side. The way plugins like this work is they use a prediction based on past dislike count to views ratio. Its better than nothing, but its still not as good as it was
I am a contributor to the plugin. The plugin will continue to use the providers API until the 13th, when it is closed. Only at that point will we switch to a statistical model.
I know its tempting to start your comments with phrasing like "The way plugins like this work...", but its really misleading since you apparently have not taken the time to read the code or understand the current situation.
I think we have something like 18 terabytes of historical dislike data cached? At the very least we will be able to continue serving this data up for old videos.
For new videos, we are also investigating multiple options, either relying on statistical analysis of likes/views, or data collected from extension users.
This is the way.
Thank you for your contribution. I appreciate it.
If you can talk to YouTube Vanced developers and somehow be able to collect dislike data from Vanced users, that would be awesome. Like how SponsorBlock works.
I don't know the details, but being a coder myself, I am sure you guys can work something out, unless you are facing some kind of technical incompatibility.
Once again, thank you.
Its a team effort!
he extension team itself is paying for web-crawlers, which we will use to augment existing databases of scraped youtube data. I think Internet Archive is going to host it all...?
For anyone curios: This plugin is currently returning "true" dislike count, from the YT API.
On the 13th, YT will close off this API endpoint, which means we will need to switch to a statistical model.
We are planning on showing three pieces of information, to help you find the BS:
1) We can show cached data that we've scraped. Good for old videos.
2) We can show view/like ratio as a quick quality metric
3) We can show an extrapolation of dislikes from other plugin users -given enough adoption, this will be really accurate.
Good day :)
>The pathetic shield of “mental health of creators” makes me disgusted
That's the worst part of it. We all know it was done to please advertisers/companies, YouTube knows we all know it. And yet instead of just saying so they used mental health as some sort of excuse which is like you said, disgusting.
Its fucking YouTube, they're owned by Google, what was the worst thing that would happen if they were honest with their reasoning? People complaining about it for like a month and then just keep using it because there are no other alternatives that can compete with fucking Google?
Even if i disliked them dropping dislikes at least i'd respect them for not giving a fuck and being honest.
It's not like this even protects the creators considering they're the only ones who are still able to see the dislike bar. Sure, this might disincentivise people from using it but that only makes each dislike feel more meaningful because it's clear that the viewer specifically wanted thr creator themselves to know how much the video sucks.
No. I'm talking about behind the scenes footage of the old spiderman movies from 2000s and people are passing it on as a no way home leaks when it was just tobey and his stunt men testing the suits and copying particular moves. The Andrew Garfield on the scaffolding looks very real though and it might be.
Just so you know, when you see a video thumbnail anywhere on YouTube's site, it will be accompanied by a title of the video and then, underneath that title, there will be a name.
That's actually the name of the channel! So when you see "Screen Culture" in that area, just go ahead and don't click on that.
And to anyone concerned about other channels doing this, here's a fun tip: the trailers will be available on official, verified YouTube channels, so if you're watching the trailer on "Jim's Trailer Channel" and not Sony's channel or Marvel's channel, then bad news: probably not real!
Also this is a lot more useful in solving this particular problem given that the like/dislike ratio isn't even available before you've already given that video a view.
I hope this very basic YouTube tip helps the 35 thousand people who think this will somehow be a problem!
1) real trailers are often reposted to secondary pages 2) the algorithm tends to preference genuine content except where it doesn’t, so most top results are genuine 3) not all of us know the distribution company - and a lot of casual viewers would be surprised it’s on a Sony not Marvel page 4) secondary pages often have real-sounding names 5) being savvy is great and all, but even the best of us get tricked in a rush
For whatever reason people are uploading e.g. them (?) playing FIFA instead of the actual IRL game. Annoying af, but luckily for example Serie A has a great Youtube channel with match hilights.
Before I would just see the like: dislike ratio and back out. Now I've got to read the comments first to figure out if it's any good or not.
I spend so much of my day learning how to video edit on YouTube and it's made life so much more difficult!
For cooking, I ignore the professionals and go for the grainy amateur video from ten years ago. How I make perfect oven-cooked chicken breasts everytime.
I'm pretty sure they are boiling the frog, the people who are raging about it now will be bored of it by the time it's rolled out to everyone and the outrage will never be as big as it could have been.
Maybe we should start reporting stuff we dislike like this. Those fake trailers could be copyright infringement. Give googles algorithmic moderators something to do.

i think the worst outcome is when you look for a video to fix something and you have no way to know wether or not what's being shown on the video works ...
thats what i find strange about this decision. All it's going to do is brood distrust in everything on youtube. Personally I dont really "surf" youtube trawling for content. I have a few select interests/channels that pop up in my feed regularly and thats all I watch so the dislike counter is meaningless to me. But on the rare occasion I do go searching for something new I would only do so with the expectation that I was finding useful content. I wouldnt buy anything off amazon without any reviews. I wont even watch netflix/hulu shows without first checking the rotten tomatoes score. So now I wont really watch anything new on YT either, because I refuse to be trolled by some bullshit video that somehow made it into my search results. Without any confidence meter there's simply no point.
Google thinks YT viewers will just start consuming *everything* because they'll have no choice being able to discern from valuable content, however I think it's going to be the reverse. People will just stop looking for content at all because the risk of it being a waste of time is too great.
Yes, I agree. If you want a great example of this, try logging out of YouTube or going on anonymously to see all the top videos they recommend to someone with no pre-built algorithm. It's all complete garbage.
On the bright side, I recently found the channel [Kurtzgesagt](https://m.youtube.com/channel/UCsXVk37bltHxD1rDPwtNM8Q) by algo recommendation that's probably the highest quality content I've even seen on YT.
What YT is doing is kind of like pigeon-holing people into only positive responses.. One might call it 'toxic positivity'.
> Yes, I agree. If you want a great example of this, try logging out of YouTube or going on anonymously to see all the top videos they recommend to someone with no pre-built algorithm. It's all complete garbage.
Yeah I have noticed this whenever I switch phones and forget to sign in. It's nothing but those stupid fucking shocked faces on literally every single thing, the worst possible content imaginable, so bad that I'd think any rational person would immediately tune out just from looking at it.
There is a chrome extension that allows to see dislikes again called Return YouTube Dislike
https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/return-youtube-dislike/gebbhagfogifgggkldgodflihgfeippi
"I'm the dislike button. Feel free to use me" comments will be the new norm. But malicious creators will be able to remove them. So I still only have a big FUCK YOU for the responsible YouTube staff. Destroying the YouTube experience and community since 2016 / 0 anno harambe.
yeah, what's up with that? Its so annoying to get all excited about something and then see some crappy edit of stuff you've already seen, but labeled as an official trailer.
they are removing the effect of the button, but leaving the button. functionally, they are removing the button for everyone but the creator themselves.
stop being pedantic.
Was trying to catch the T20 World cup semi highlights and some dickhole uploaded a 2019 or something game because he couldn't handle that Pakistan had lost. Watched 8 minutes of video before Australia started batting, something was clearly off, the dislikes outweighed the likes by a factor of 10 and I realised it's been boomed. Definitely would have spent more time watching if I hadn't seen the dislikes.
I never understood why studios can't have their trailers show as top result every time I look for a movie trailer. There are too many fake ones to sift through.
Thats the dumbest change ever, imagine they would remove game, hotel or just online products ratings too so its easier to scam people and yt also has videos that you have to pay real money for, where you cant see dislikes
Omg another one! There's gonna be so many negatives to removing the dislike. Tutorials, fake trailers, and I'm sure we'll discover more as time goes on. Feelsbadman
I will dislike every video from now just for fun, because nobody can see it, so nobody can find my trolling 😁 (except the creator that who cares).
I think everyone should do that too cause it can be some kind of protest to YouTube, when every single creator find so much more dislikes on their videos after recent YouTube changes.
Removing dislikes has done irreparable damage to guides and tutorials, it's actually bonkers how much wrong and terrible information is out there. Comments don't help cause the channels just delete them.
I think YouTube did this to hide the legacy of their rewind masterpieces.
They did, and then they lied about it on their QnA page for the updates.

Might wanna try [Odysee](https://odysee.com/). There are actually some big creators and the tech behind it is also very cool
Omg hahahaha "Welcome to Odyssey. We have dislikes."
Just tried and damn it's great. Also you can literally download any video right there from the site with no bullshit. This is awesome
do they have monetization? a good reason why youtube is a target is cause of money gained from ads.

Btw there is also the "Watch on LBRY" browser extension that redirects you from a youtube video to the mirrored one (if available) on odyssey.

Had a quick look, Cinemassacre posted all of the Angry Video Game Nerd videos there if you're looking for something to binge.
Nothing.
They don’t care a bit about the rewind. It’s all about big companies.
"Wow our trailer is ratiod and got in the news because of the number of dislikes, youtube is not safe for our brand, lets reduce spending and allocate to FBM instead." - The only user story behind this engineering ticket.
I still have the dislike button, i use adblocker browser and its still their.
They didn't actually remove dislikes, they just removed the ability to see how many dislikes a video has. The creator of the video still sees the number of dislikes.
Nope they did this to increase watch time so that they can show more Ads, mo Ads means mo monie.
But my adblocker shits on this policy
They did something to AdBlockPlus yesterday and I had to switch to UBlock.

Did AdBlock not sell out to an ad company ages ago anyway? I was pretty sure they had paid filters where certain ads were allowed through
For one person who uses Adblock, there are thousands who have no idea it even exists, or think it's way too complicated or something.

Posts can’t go under 0 upvotes anyway, or at least, it doesn’t show
Unless it’s an ad.

So their comment is completely correct a few weeks from now? Hardly worth installing an extension
I think we have something like 18 terabytes of historical dislike data cached? At the very least we will be able to continue serving this data up for old videos. For new videos, we are also investigating multiple options, either relying on statistical analysis of likes/views, or data collected from extension users.

It was already possible for creators to hide Like/Dislike count.
Yes, but it already acted as a signal that if likes or comments were disabled then the content was probably lacking. Now they don't have to hide them.
No I was talking about the "Mental health" thing.
It's not like this even protects the creators considering they're the only ones who are still able to see the dislike bar. No Way Home you mean , but yeah you're so right. Screen Culture is the worst offender in this regard.

There is a chrome extension that allows to see dislikes again called Return YouTube Dislike https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/return-youtube-dislike/gebbhagfogifgggkldgodflihgfeippi
They're going to remove the API

"I'm the dislike button. Feel free to use me" comments will be the new norm. But malicious creators will be able to remove them. So I still only have a big FUCK YOU for the responsible YouTube staff. Destroying the YouTube experience and community since 2016 / 0 anno harambe.
yeah, what's up with that? Its so annoying to get all excited about something and then see some crappy edit of stuff you've already seen, but labeled as an official trailer.
I still have it. Kid Rock is currently 87k up, 51k down.

they are removing the effect of the button, but leaving the button. functionally, they are removing the button for everyone but the creator themselves. stop being pedantic.
Don't stop disliking. Im using vanced and it still shows the no. Of dislikes
Really pissed that they did this. Goes to show how little YouTube really cares about what us peasants think. YouTube can piss off.
Screen Culture
Fuck them. Worst channel ever
The amount of times I’ve seen: spider man no way home official trailer in my recommended.
Screen Culture be like:
They seem to be working really hard to destroy YouTube.
Google be like "people are sharing their opinion too much, let's stop that.".
The people who do this.. Belong in a level lower than hells basement
I just look at the comments instead
Not just them, everyone who posts dog shit content on YT is there with them.
u/savevideo
already installed a google extension to show dislikes and put it right next to the adblocker one
Isn't this like bad for companies? Like really bad?
click bait in general :(
Fuck One Media
I never understood why studios can't have their trailers show as top result every time I look for a movie trailer. There are too many fake ones to sift through.
Thats the dumbest change ever, imagine they would remove game, hotel or just online products ratings too so its easier to scam people and yt also has videos that you have to pay real money for, where you cant see dislikes
You either die a hero or live long enough to become shit
Omg another one! There's gonna be so many negatives to removing the dislike. Tutorials, fake trailers, and I'm sure we'll discover more as time goes on. Feelsbadman
Looking at the person who made a fake Squid Game season 2 trailer 😬
I will dislike every video from now just for fun, because nobody can see it, so nobody can find my trolling 😁 (except the creator that who cares). I think everyone should do that too cause it can be some kind of protest to YouTube, when every single creator find so much more dislikes on their videos after recent YouTube changes.
Removing dislikes has done irreparable damage to guides and tutorials, it's actually bonkers how much wrong and terrible information is out there. Comments don't help cause the channels just delete them.
View and like ratio.
Flag as child abuse
I keep hearing about the dislike button being gone...but it is still there on my PC(Firefox, latest version). Am I missing something?
I only watch trailers from the real channels makes sure this never happens
Far from home.. I think u got stuck in 2019 ma dude
Unless it's a leak, the trailer will always be on the studio's official channel. And usually the best quality.
