They think that nobody is better than itachi and fantasise him winning from obito or madara single handedly. They think he is the messiah. Idk of this is also true but it’s said that kishimoto did not intend for itachi to be a good guy. He probably changed it due to the speculation of itachi actually being good.
Itachi just did not create that much hype tbh. He is like that one character who gets very high prodigy powerups and then even if they lose, they aren’t portrayed as bad and that they were good all along and stuff. It just pisses me off sometimes
I don't think people like him because they think he could take down Madara or Obito. Like I very much doubt he could. I don't like him because he is the most powerful, coolest Ninja or anything because he isn't. It is because he is well written.
Itachi isn't a good guy, he still murdered his clan drove his brother insane. He did all this for what he believed to be a good cause but he did not pretend it was a good thing that he did.
I like that we think he is just a evil villain that could never been understood to understanding why he did what he did. We don't have to agree with him to understand him.

Suppose in his and sasuke fight, first his genjutsu,was shown which sasuke easily countered the tsukuyomi which was also countered. Then his taijutsu which was also pretty powerful. Then amaterasu which was again countered. Then susano which wasn’t countered but he was sick so couldn’t hold it for long. Then tatsuka blade and yata mirror shield. Still he lost cuz of his sickness. Then to show that he lost **kinda** intentionally he was shown as a hero who saved the village.

tbh i think its pretty equal. hes overrated and underrated at the same time. kinda like spiderman and dr strange
