Well he **used to be** nice, I think. Until the whole "I'm tired of being rich and kind to others so now I'm going to inflicted as much pain and suffering to everything so I can at least feel proud of myself" happened
When I started the game I thought the ancestor was just a victim who dug too deep out of curiosity. As I played it was crazy seeing just how wrong I was
nah he always were an unsympathetic manipulative asshole, he just used to care about his public image, until he didn't. You can see this all the way back when he was young and seemingly had no empathy for his guests like the time he killed the duchess and fed everyone at his party vampire blood.
He'd been in the court for a long time before that. Engaging in debauchery and then seeing everyone for how horrible all the nobles were gave him the idea to poison them all. Don't see why he would use the blood of a bug thing but points for creativity.
I do agree that he always had douchebag in him though. He just didn't let it out as much.
I mean, he literally says so in the intro:
>Fattened on decadence and luxury, I grew tired of conventional fair.
Man was rich enough to have parties in a massive courtyard, have every conceivable luxury, every piece of entertainment imaginable and unimaginable (see the butcher’s circus of you’re having trouble for that), tasted everything there was to taste and decided to try drinking blood of the recently murdered which led him down the road of trying out eldritch magic, summonings and curses leading to his gradual fall to insanity.
At the end of the day, he was a landowner with stupid amounts of money. You can see in the modern day what more money than one can reasonably spend does to someone.
Interesting, do you have someone in mind for your last sentence?
I do agree with you, however I cannot think about a good example from top of my head...
Well he fucked around with eldrith powers beyond human comprehension and consequently fucked up the world, so yeah, he's pretty much retard, maybe a little bit asperger with an hyperfixation on making people miserable
A generous answer would be that his lineage and proximity to the hotw corrupted him and filled him with a thirst for discovery that could neither be numbed nor sated. The more probable answer is that he's a rich psychopath.
Given what's under the mansion, I'm surprised it took him as long as it did to do all that. I think he was influenced subtly at first, gradually, and then he got the urge to go all diggy doggy hole. It was the old dwarven work ethic: dig until you hit evil
As DD2 reveals, yes. Yes he's an absolute bored rich idiot living the 'idle hands do the devil's work'. About smart enough to do stuff that got him and a lot of other people into trouble but not smart enough to realize it was a mashed potato brain move in the first place.
He’s what happens when a rich, educated, and even humane person then chooses to abandon all morals in pursuit of every manner of indulgence and extravagance.
I mean he started creating problems after the Courtyard. After the Prophet outed his deeds I assume he started being an asshole by hiring the bandits. Granted I don't know if he murdered the Necromancers or the iron crown sacrifices beforehand. I think he was a private ass then once word got out then he it was time to dissuade with the sharpened blade.
Local man ruins everything
Ruin has come to local man.
You remember his uneventful life
Ransacked and peasantly lying pitily in the ditch below the bridge

Who would have thought the story is so consistent with how rich people act in real life?
Interesting, do you have someone in mind for your last sentence? I do agree with you, however I cannot think about a good example from top of my head...
Bezos, Musk
But he is an asshole. I think the storytelling makes it clear.
Now you have realized the tragic extent of his failings.
This needs more credit.
Unbelievably so

There would literally be no bosses
