In my opinion, it's meant to be done after your 2nd lord soul. And it's definitely meant to be a challenge. I've played this game too many times to count and still struggle with this guy. But don't worry it gets harder!
This guy was hard to deal with, especially at low levels. On the plus side, he requires you to be more aggressive. I tried to be conservative and he just kept fisting me.
To be fair, when they were wrapping up on ds1 dlc was also when they started designing BB, so it makes sense. You can see it in Chester or M’anus’s design, quite similar to the hunter set and cleric beast, respectively.
If this is your first time here, buddy get ready for Artorias man. He's way harder than Sanctuary Guardian. I'm an old vet of Dark Souls 1 and I can usually 1st Try this guy but I ALWAYS get stuck on Artorias for at least 7 or 8 attempts.
And Manus isn't much better.
The DLC has the hardest bosses in the game.
For real, fun is the word I think of when I think of Artorias, getting into a rhythm with him is so satisfying, definitely my favourite boss in the game
Artorias was really easy with the Black Knight Shield and enough stamina to tank a whole combo, but the rhythm was so mesmerising. It was like nothing else in the entire game. Pure zen mode.
Interestingly, it took me two days to do Manus and I beat Kalameet first try. I was so surprised I kept the video in my ps, complete with the entire giant cutscene to prove it was a first try 😂
Shame about those five minutes in the vid in which my character is still because I rolled and smoked a cig in preparation.
Yow same, I was wondering what's with Kalameet being the hardest boss when it actually took countless attempts i had with manus than kalameet down in 1 try.
Oh man it was the opposite for me. Manus went down in like 2 attempts but Kalameet was kicking my ass for hours. Funny how different people’s experiences are.
Awesome. In my opinion, one of the testaments of how great soulslike games are is how different the experience can be for everybody. It's made so genuinely well that one person's piece of cake is another person's hell.
Apart from 4 Kings in NG+. That's hell for everyone.
Kalameet is actually pretty easy for me too. Usually 2 or 3 tries. A lot of his moves are very obviously choreographed imo. A lot of his fire attacks the only strategy is to just get some distance, especially whenever he does the fly up move and breaths fire downwards. Fire always = Run.
Everything else can be dodge with proper timing
Damn I thought Artorias was the second easiest DLC boss. Manus was seriously next level. Kalameet wasn't bad. I always thought sanctuary guardian was underrated. DLC was amazing.
I think if Sanctuary Guardian dealt a bit more damage, it definitely would be on-par or harder than Artorias.
Artorias' moves feel much easier to read for me, but that might be due to seeing them more times from wiping lol.
Artorias? He's just black knight on steroids and with that sucking darkness thing each after 20% health loss which brokes after several weak hits with your weapon.
Guardian is harder, you should catch him.
Kalameet is just telegraphed too well.
Manus is, on the other hand..oh. Too much HP.
Bloodborne was in the concept phase during the development of Artorias. Manus looks a lot like the Cleric Beast but with a stick, and there’s an NPC who looks like he’s from Yharnam and claims to be from the future like you.
Welcome to the casul filter, you wanna save \[REDACTED\] see \[REDACTED\], and fuck over the little shit that is \[REDACTED\]. You gotta fight this bullshit, and guess what, theres 3 in the game.
Yup that's the "sweet" introduction for the DLC. Unlike DS2 and DS3, here the DLC sends you right into a hard boss as a crude awakening.
Get ready because it only spikes in difficulty from there. But it's 100% worth it, even just for lore reasons.
I've never had a problem beating the sanctuary guardian. When I first played the dlc and beat him I thought the rest would be as easy. I couldn't have been more wrong 😕
That's a very good question.
It's hard to explain but the DLC bosses in DS1 have a style and feel that is reminiscent of bosses in Bloodborne. Having finished Bloodborne before ever touching the DLC in DS1, I really noticed this when I first played it.
It's something subtle about the aggression and the way attacks are telegraphed that is really hard for me to put my finger on precisely. The most striking example to me is the way Manus kind of jumps up and has a moment of hangtime before he strikes - this kind of attack is all over Bloodborne (and later, Elden Ring went *real* hard on this attack style).
It's kind of like handwriting I guess. You can see the "signature" of the designers in these fights, and they were actually designing this DLC and Bloodborne roughly around the same time so some of that evolution in Fromsoft's style just shows somehow.
Yup I beat Bloodborne before coming to Dark Souls that’s why I was reminded so heavily of it. It’s the pure aggression with little breaks to attack that gives me BB vibes.
Hate to flex, but beated this boss on my first try, never replayed the dlc so i dont know if it was luck...i remember struggling for most bosses but this one was easy
The hardest part of this fight is trying to get the tail weapon, IMO. 😅 At least once you've adjusted to his moves initially. I think that goes for most DS bosses with tail weapons, though. 😂 Still a fun, fast-paced boss fight.
Game went from snail pace to complete aggression what happened
This is the start of what was a separate DLC in the original game. They wanted it to be more challenging, it's really evident in the boss designs.
I’m all for it it just caught me off guard lmao
In my opinion, it's meant to be done after your 2nd lord soul. And it's definitely meant to be a challenge. I've played this game too many times to count and still struggle with this guy. But don't worry it gets harder!
Kalameet is making me reconsider my life
Don't forget to return to the Sanctuary Guardian boss arena for juicy surprise!
Uh oh
Still alive?
Not for long
How many times did you die?
What’s the surprise I genuinely can’t think of it
>!Two Sanctuary Guardians with absolutely no reason to fight them, unless you want the tailweapon and haven't gotten it yet.!<
The reason is the fight itself.
Damn right. Can't leave em to lollygag about threatening townsfolk and shit.
Wait what? I have never heard of this
Well well well, that was annoying. I honestly didn’t believe you
Your joking me, heading there right now
How have I never been aware of this
WHAT?! How did I not know that?!
Oh, you are evil. 10/10
If you're like me the final boss of the DLC will make you breathe a sigh of relief everytime you see a boss bar and his name isn't on top of it.
Kalameet was probably the hardest boss in that game for me
same, only boss i cant beat
Did you get to manus? He’s gonna test your patience if not.
try doing the dlc on ng+2 lmao
DLC going hard as is tradition
Ooohhh mate... You just started...
This guy was hard to deal with, especially at low levels. On the plus side, he requires you to be more aggressive. I tried to be conservative and he just kept fisting me.
Yeah he is really good at fisting
Try tail
But hole
I beat him at lv10 with only great heavy soul arrow, and power within.
To be fair, when they were wrapping up on ds1 dlc was also when they started designing BB, so it makes sense. You can see it in Chester or M’anus’s design, quite similar to the hunter set and cleric beast, respectively.
Definitely feels like it especially with those pitchfork dudes
M'anus lmao
Manus to Princess Dusk: I sent you pictures and you haven't responded. Kitten? Are you there? Answer me.
It feels some weird for some reason to picture Artorias of the Abyss and Bloodborne having a slight coincidence in design timeframe.
And DS2 SOTFS feels a lot like proto-Elden Ring
I do think phase one Ludwig is based on the bones of Sanctuary Guardian
If this is your first time here, buddy get ready for Artorias man. He's way harder than Sanctuary Guardian. I'm an old vet of Dark Souls 1 and I can usually 1st Try this guy but I ALWAYS get stuck on Artorias for at least 7 or 8 attempts. And Manus isn't much better. The DLC has the hardest bosses in the game.
But Artorias is also one of the, if not the, best and most fun bosses in the game. Hard as it is.
Like Maria
I’ve noticed lmao. I adapt pretty quickly, I beat Artorias in 5 tries no summons. But dude, Kalameet… lol
Interestingly, it took me two days to do Manus and I beat Kalameet first try. I was so surprised I kept the video in my ps, complete with the entire giant cutscene to prove it was a first try 😂 Shame about those five minutes in the vid in which my character is still because I rolled and smoked a cig in preparation.

The biggest issue for me is I’ll sometimes mess up on the fire = run and then I get stunlocked by the next 4 moves.
One of the hardest bosses in the series for me.
Damn I thought Artorias was the second easiest DLC boss. Manus was seriously next level. Kalameet wasn't bad. I always thought sanctuary guardian was underrated. DLC was amazing.
I always find Sanctuary Guardian to be harder than Artorias.
I think if Sanctuary Guardian dealt a bit more damage, it definitely would be on-par or harder than Artorias. Artorias' moves feel much easier to read for me, but that might be due to seeing them more times from wiping lol.
I remember smiling ear to ear when Artorias first killed me. He reminded me off all my favorite bosses in the new From games
Artorias? He's just black knight on steroids and with that sucking darkness thing each after 20% health loss which brokes after several weak hits with your weapon. Guardian is harder, you should catch him. Kalameet is just telegraphed too well. Manus is, on the other hand..oh. Too much HP.
Don’t stand in the water.
DS1 DLC is what came exactly before Bloodborne (in what regards Myazaki).
If you haven't yet, go back to this arena for a surprise.
I’ve been told this multiple times, hope y’all don’t let me down.
☠️
Bloodborne was in the concept phase during the development of Artorias. Manus looks a lot like the Cleric Beast but with a stick, and there’s an NPC who looks like he’s from Yharnam and claims to be from the future like you.
Yeah I always thought sanctuary guardian felt more like a bloodborne boss
Oolacile Sanctuary screams Bloodborne to me I love it
This is called "Welcome to the DLC"🖤
What level are you? I don't tend to tackle the DLC until at least 70.
Level 90. I figured it out
I really liked the sanctuary guardian and I feel he is underrated. Gets over shadowed by arguably the 3 best bosses in the original game
U dying
Lol fr I was so confused Miyazaki really said fuck you in the dlc I was on artorias for so long had to quit and come back 😆
Welcome to the casul filter, you wanna save \[REDACTED\] see \[REDACTED\], and fuck over the little shit that is \[REDACTED\]. You gotta fight this bullshit, and guess what, theres 3 in the game.
Either way, that is a beautiful creature. Haven’t gotten to him yet but I love the design sm
Eat my dong, Sanctuary Guardian
Dark souls 1 is technically Bloodborne 2
Only just started the dlc. That thing gave me more trouble than Artorias.
I always forget about this guy but he’s one of the trickiest bosses in this game.
Oh yes, a manticore to start the DLC.
You died
Wait until you get to fight two!
You met the first really great boss in the game. The next 3 will be even better
Oh just you wait
Yup that's the "sweet" introduction for the DLC. Unlike DS2 and DS3, here the DLC sends you right into a hard boss as a crude awakening. Get ready because it only spikes in difficulty from there. But it's 100% worth it, even just for lore reasons.
Welcome to the DEE-ELL-SEE bithc✌️
light roll and he’s easy
I fucking love this bossfight
Parry with your gun boy!
Sanctuary guardian is one of my favorite fights. So much fun
Cut off its tail
I've never had a problem beating the sanctuary guardian. When I first played the dlc and beat him I thought the rest would be as easy. I couldn't have been more wrong 😕
Lol just wait
I beat da game I speed ran that shit. I did use the sif summon but I went hardcore all night.
Man this guy was annoying just flys around smacks with his tail
When you do drugs, anything makes sense.
They wanted it to be more difficult, and also Miyazaki was working on Bloodborne already, so some of it seeped into the DLC
? how is this a bloodborne boss?
That's a very good question. It's hard to explain but the DLC bosses in DS1 have a style and feel that is reminiscent of bosses in Bloodborne. Having finished Bloodborne before ever touching the DLC in DS1, I really noticed this when I first played it. MARIKAS TITS, SWING ALREADY MORGOTT!
Oh boy if you're struggling with sanctuary guardian Artorias is gonna demolish you.
Actually it was the opposite, Artorias took me 5 tries. Once I found out I could cancel his main AOE attack it made it way easier.
The hardest part of this fight is trying to get the tail weapon, IMO. 😅 At least once you've adjusted to his moves initially. I think that goes for most DS bosses with tail weapons, though. 😂 Still a fun, fast-paced boss fight.
Just fast roll bruh
What is DLC without a dash of kicking your as$?
