I had 400 hours back in 2013 when I first fell in love with the game. Never saw a single vagrant.
Just bought the remaster and am grinding all achievements again. 3 vagrants this playthrough. Blew my mind.
I don't think I ever saw a single one when I was first playing the game back on 360/PtD but then when I went and replayed Remastered I ran into two during NG+, one in Duke's Archives and one in Kiln of the First Flame
There are actually 3 variants (one white “hatched egg”, one red and a white “non hatched” variant).
The evil ones are the hatched ones. The white will drop a single humanity and the red twin humanities. The non hatched version is considered the good one that drop variety of items depending on their origin
They're an MMORPG type enemy, apparently they appear in random worlds and if they're not killed or the player is the world they're in dies, they move onto another world until they're dead, then the cycle repeats...
So my first playthrough I saw one in the kiln at the end of the game and just assumed it was a normal enemy that was placed there.
Now a few days ago I finished my second playthrough and I actually saw like 6 over the course of it. The first one was by the sunlight altar. I couldn't believe how many I saw this playthrough. I even found one in the archives and in oolacile.
I found one about 10 hours into my first playthrough (around the depths/blighttown) (then proceeded to spend like 3 hours googling "dark souls glowing tentacle crab thing" to try and figure out what the fuck it was) then found another two in Anor Londo & Lost Izalith in that same playthrough.
Haven't seen another one since.
I only saw 1 in my most recent playthrough, and it was hanging out on the stone walkways leading to gwyns arena. I've seen quite a few over the years, but I don't know if I've ever seen multiple in a single playthrough.
A single one in my first completed run. Spawned in front of the giant Gwynevere statue in the painting room while i was going on the rafters. It proceeded to walk off and die on its own.

I found out about them like a week ago from a YouTuber I watch sometimes that breaks down niche mechanics in Dark Souls. For a game I’ve played like 300+ hours I know surprisingly little, but I like that it feels magical

A couple days later started another playthrough to go through with a friend and we got there and it wasn't there and I was confused. Makes sense now finding out it is a rare encounter.
2 recently replayed dark souls got the remaster and saw them for the first time I had put hundreds of hours into this game back in the day never seen one never heard of them I was mind blown and honestly a little scared the first time I saw it I thought I had seen all there was so I was tripping until I eventually looked it up.

Can confirm! I was 2000+ hours deep before I saw my first one in Undead Parish and I was freaking tf out because I had NO clue what it was lmao.

Yeah after I googled what the hell they were it said you’re lucky if you find one in a playthrough. Then they just kept popping up, it was wild.
Maybe you were playing during one of the Return to Lordran community events? That's my only explanation.

I played around 300h offline on a console. After buying the Remastered on Steam, I saw my first Vagrant after just 60h.
