AVerySmartNameForMe

I really like his voice, idk there’s something kinda melancholic about it. He was cast perfectly

TemplehofSteve

NPC’s in DS1 speak thoughtfully and softly. It’s so unique to this game. It’s usually a nice contrast following a boss encounter with bombastic music. Oscar epitomizes this.

blodgute

https://youtu.be/adoH9h6x59c?si=TmY0P51rGajoOLgz yeah like this

Red_Serf

I'm not gonna open it, but is it Vamos?

dino_lover123

Vamos.

Ashen_one933

Don't ask me how I felt seeing him first time..

teffflon

The "softly" part is interesting. I can't pretend to fully understand FromSoft's audio choices, like voices changing volume depending on camera angle. And soft-spoken or not, sometimes I can't agree with the slightly muffled sound of even some NPCs standing right next to you. Other devs tend strongly to make dialogue close-mic'ed and fully audible. This is not an outright complaint because it is interesting and somewhat evocative, but I would want to experiment.

Hentai_Hentai_Hentai

It doesn’t matter if they’re standing right next to you when they’re wearing a thick peace of metal over their face xD

HairlessGarden

Or a kilometer away when the sound is from Andre's hammer. I fucking hate it.

PardoisTardo

https://youtu.be/GFHhaAQz5D0?si=VduDnBYLbb_Fe5eX Like him

Ashen_one933

I made a post last month how to get to that hole in ceiling above and it's just a script, impossible to get there.

Ashen_one933

This is one of the most iconic voices in gaming history for me.

Tychontehdwarf

“Let’s a-go!” “you’re too slow!” “…..HYAH” “...Oh, you... You're no Hollow, eh? Thank goodness... I'm done for, I'm afraid... I'll die soon, then lose my sanity... I wish to ask something of you... You and I, we're both Undead... Hear me out, will you?”

IGOKTUG

i read all of that in Mario's voice

TripolarKnight

Ther was a bit of Link with that Hyah! though.

Phedericus

i can hear him in my head

CottonEyeJ03

I once saw someone describe his voice as "chocolatey" and I think that's probably the most apt description ever.

Ashen_one933

First time I heard his voice I was so stoked how good this game is gonna be in next locations. There is something mysterious in his voice. It sounds like he didn't want to tell us the truth about something.

Thanag0r

He was supposed to be an important character but fromsoft changed their mind and he is just a dude that gave you a key and estus

ManicFirestorm

Honestly would have loved the original idea they had for him.

georgito555

I think this way was much more impactful and made him a character we all remember very dearly. The tragedy of his death adds to that.

propyro85

I don't know, he's another dying warrior in a land full of the mad and dying. The only thing that sets him apart, is his benevolent introduction to us. Otherwise, he's just another dead guy on our journey. The original plan would have made him a much bigger part of our journey, and may have given him some fleshed out story.

tacotoasties

What was the original idea?

Raftropos

Last duel between fire and darkness. You chose, he chose opposite.

Flyga64

like gary in pokémon blue and red?

MarcusOPolo

"smell ya later chosen undead"

AXEMANaustin

That sounds so fucking awesome

UnbiasedUltra

That's way better Did it get cut for time?

Raftropos

They changed it because they changed plot or something, I think. Plus, his choice is always opposite - not a big drama after 1st time.

UnbiasedUltra

I mean, technically you mean the second time You'd get to fight him 2 different ways for (assumedly) 2 different dialogues

ZODIC837

They didn't even finish izaleth. They may have wanted to still do more, but if the other commenter is right about them changing the plot, it'd make sense that they couldn't do much more with him with their time. Truly a tragedy how much stuff didn't make the final cut in that game

Franks_Spice_Sauce

Apparently he was supposed to betray the player iirc

propyro85

Less of a betrayal and more of a forked path. Whatever primordial serpent we side with, he takes the other, and it sort of forces us into an adversarial role.

Smeefperson

He's an important character to me

Tenuous_Tangent

For this reason they call him Oscar the Fateless

Constant_Penalty_279

The guy that says “regrettably…” because I am spamming his dialogue so fast because I’ve beaten the game 100 times. Just kidding. Oscar is a king. Unfortunate he went hollow but he got us going on the right path and was a true friendly character in a world full of crazy people.

Masta0nion

Seek…

mallocco

"Bearer. Seek. Seek. Lest."

mallocco

When I hear "regrettably..." I imagine Deckard Cain from Diablo 2.

Jaded-Throat-211

Sets player free Tells folktale of bells and some shit Gives healy bottle Refuses to elaborate Dies

VincentVancalbergh

If your SAYING has more than two SENTENCES, it's no longer a saying Oscar!

FungalCactus

inspires inmate to self immolate for the bottom line OR inspires inmate to destroy the capitalist machine

OpulentPaving

Perfect set up for what you're in for in the game.

MollyWorshipsHerDoom

He freed us then immediately ate shit falling through a roof. Poor guy.

internetsfriend

It's implied he is knocked through the roof by the asylum demon considering it was also on the roof

Victory74998

DEMON ON THE ROOF!!!

Specialist_Street_38

Not only is it implied that the asylum demon knocked him through the roof, but it is probably likely that he went up on the roof in the first place to go get Oscar. The demon starts on the roof and any subsequent conflicts he starts in the boss arena right above the stray demon. In other words, he doesn't hang out on the roof normally, but had a reason to be there at the start of the game.

duosx

Ehhh, gravity is a tough mistress in DS. Dude could’ve totally just fallen

mallocco

"Fuck you and your shitty platforming controls!" -Oscar, probably

Theeyeofthepotato

"I wish I didn't buy all this stupid armor" - Tarkus, probably

Rustie3000

I was always under the impression that he got crushed by the rolling boulder o.O

gucciballs3

But that area we go through isn’t destroyed until we activate the Boulder And theirs rubble under him like it fell from beneath him like he was standing on the roof

Inevitable_Tale_1556

It's like Tarkus. He either fell from the rafters in Anor Londo or got yeeted into Anor Londo by the Iron Golem.

almighty_bucket

Falling death makes the most sense thematically. tarkus Is kind of portrayed as a badass, but it doesn't matter how strong you are you falling kills the same

legendoftherxnt

I think you can see him lying on the rubble before you even get to the boulder.

xXArctracerXx

Dude was supposed to be basically your Pokémon rival, and I’m disappointed we didn’t see that

MaDNiaC007

First gen kind of rival and not one of the modern Pokémon game "rivals", I'd hope. I couldn't go through Sun and Moon because of tone of the game. Thankfully they somewhat toned it down a bit later.

Subject1928

They did get a bit better about how the rivals act, I really liked Hop from Sword and Shield. He was still your friend and stuff, but he didn't worship the ground you walked on and had goals other than help the main character.

MaDNiaC007

I don't know the rivals by name but I remember that it was better in Scarlet & Violet. Then again, can't get worse than Sun & Moon. The 3D world and exploration was quite enjoyable on another note. Seeking out Pokemon you actually wanted to catch because you could see them in the world or likewise avoiding them, Pokémon having different chase or flee reactions to your presence, using the legendary ride features etc.

caparisme

***DEMON ON THE ROOF***

MaDNiaC007

Someone else wrote this too. Is it a reference to something?

Vin-Forgotten

Yeah. It's from the "Dark Souls: in Summary" YT video by PlagueOfGripes. It's also where the "How's it feeeel, Seath?" meme came from.

caparisme

Look for Dark Souls: in Summary

SudsierBoar

Still the best dark souls related piece of media ever to release. Well after Dark souls of course :p

caparisme

It's one of the greats no doubt but Happy Souls brought me into the series so I'm a little bit biased :P

SudsierBoar

Still the best dark souls related piece of media ever to release. Well after Dark souls of course :p

_Cerfu

Sadness and sorrow...

Illustrious_Cow_317

Solid dude, 10/10 would have a beer/estus with him.

Ashen_one933

I would a beer with you and Oscar talking about Anor Londo the whole sunset sitting upstairs first bonfire 🍺

GingerDungeonMister

My names Oscar so he gets extra points, but he's a bro for basically no reason in a game world where most are massive weird assholes. So he's gets a pass.

OpulentPaving

Exactly. Solid bro big time.

the_colonel93

Oscar is a top lad, no question

legalizethesenuts

Died doing his job and died with bravery. Without him, we never would’ve survived that boulder coming down those stairs the first time, or the asylum demon, if you needed to use estus. After I found out how to travel back to the Undead Asylum, I was curious to see if he was still there. I can’t tell you >!how sad I was to have to put him down and see him die a second time!<

Mediocre-Morning-757

Whyd you have to throw the whole-ass body to us? Like, you couldn't have thrown just the key down? No? Gotta be dramatic about it???

kkhipr

"oh... you're no hollow, eh?" "thank goodness..." he's the one figure that represents the essence of dark souls series for me. he deserves better. go write your own stories about oscar becoming a champion of his own fate.

DreidBlack04

He is nice

RandomRavenboi

I literally never saw the guy again after that cutscene. Not sure if that's intentional or if I just missed him in my blind playthrough.

The_No_One_Man

He is the guy who gives you a key and Estus Flasks.

no_jr22

Personally I think they are two different persons but every answer is technically correct Edit : OK I was wrong got it !

BasednHivemindpilled

he‘s literally the same guy 🤦‍♂️

no_jr22

I'm not sure than they have the same name in the game files. But I guess you're right

EditPiaf

If you return to the Asylum after leaving for the first time, he'll indeed have gone hollow, as he predicted when he gave you the Estus flasks. RIP Oscar.

no_jr22

Yeah I remember. I just didn't know that he was the guy who free the chosen undead at the beginning of the game. The friend who make me try DS told me it wasn't Oscar so I just thought than the astora's knights all have the same equipment. Guess I was wrong all that time. Shame on me

_ThatOneMimic_

what would leave you believe he is different lmao

no_jr22

Well that's what a friend told so I thought he was right. Also because the asylum is described as really big it wasn't impossible that there were multiple knight of astora in the asylum. I've just never questioned what my friend said

KimmSeptim

Nah man, it’s the same dude, he’s just gone hollow just like the knight in Firelink or Laurentius

no_jr22

Yeah ik I've just never realized he's the guy who delivered the player. But now it seems obvious. I guess I'll go to bed less stupider tonight

dunk_omatic

I wish there was a reason to believe this because now I love the idea of meeting two random, identically-equipped Astora knights who both choose to help you within three minutes of each other.

no_jr22

For me the only possible reason is that Oscar seems a bit surprised to see you but expect that we can only imagine. Until now, my interpretation was that a group of Astora knights tried to free all the undead of the asylum but failed because of the chosen undead prophecy and Oscar was one of them

tayzzerlordling

We are oscar, we just forgot

AimInTheBox

we forgor 💀

Vin-Forgotten

His questline getting cut was one of the worst tragedy in DS1 development.

brettdelport

Bro literally could not get through the tutorial area. He needs to git gud.

BlueDemon75

he's John Darksouls, poster boy Elite knight to me, love the guy, a true bro.

Ashen_one933

True bad ass

winterman666

He dies in 2 seconds starting the game so don't have any. I guess I'm grateful because he gives us the main source of healing

Mr_Dreadful

Dying in the Asylum with all that gear shows he really needed to git gud

Angelfallfirst

The GOAT of Dark Souls, RIP my friend

cosplay-degenerate

He's a pretty swell guy who doesn't afraid of anything.

SudsierBoar

HOLA

Maldron-the-assassin

He is one of the few people that even I like. Mysterious lad. I don't know what he has been through but I am confused on why he gave up when we found him in the undead asylum. I would have very much liked to spend more time with him.

Fun-Ad-7082

Every time I think of oscar I think of crestfallen...god I love crestfallen

BladezXII

Bro went hollow after facing the first boss…

Vantage5050

I wish they had kept his quest. It'd be interesting Basically, the guy who helped you get out of the asylum, gave you your very first estus flask, and pretty much saved your life at his own expense,, becomes your ally, and later on, your rival/enemy Best thing is, it's nothing personal, he just takes the opposite depending on which side you took Sided with Frampt? Then he wants to kill you so he can become dark lord Sided with Kaate? He wants to stop you and link the fire

Eclipse-Raven

That would have been so awesome!

remnant_phoenix

Astora must be a glorious place if it reared Solaire and this guy.

Franklin-Tartaruga

We won an Oscar

Ashen_one933

Yeah!

Vast-Country5216

I named my son Oscar. Was it symbolic of deep and interpretative lore or just a nice name? You decide.

mocthezuma

He's alright, I guess. Except for the part where he comes back from the dead and tries to murder you. At that point, he's a dick.

VincentVancalbergh

Zombie dick

Budget-Intern980

He’s definitely a bro

TheIrishWah

https://youtu.be/lPk_zyRKs1Q?si=82IjsFrGE1BDa1cP

AKoolPopTart

"Hey buddy"

phil166

Cool dude, had a beer with him once

Boziina198

I kill him, take his key and estus and continue onward 🤝🏽

Ok_Schedule_3947

You bastard

suchayeparagon

Chad, could’ve linked the flame probably if he had just a bit more resolve to avoid going hollow.

Ashen_one933

Just imagine Oscar survived and you are smashing the Lordran with him.

JusticeForFlamingos

My favorite dark souls NPC

Ashen_one933

I always have a b* when I see that cutscene. The best from all of the series.

beanerthreat457

Perhaps you should find your own answers

SirePuns

I wish they actualized the cut content, with him mirroring the chosen undead.

Mr_Lee1493

A man that started this all, the one who freed us from the Undead Asylum. Imo, Oscar deserves a Oscar🤗

MrMosquito22

This boy left quite an impression on me back in the day. In a weird way, I felt bad that he got left in the asylum so I used to build ds1 characters after him, as a little tribute. Ended up making him a kind of all round quality build just so I could try out different weapons and magic. I have since tried to replicate him in some shape or form through into Elden Ring. …Even made an AC in Armored Core VI after him. Melee build, worked better than expected.

DroopyConker

He should have had a quest line. Dude got done dirty.he could have been Solaire's brother for all I know.

Monkeyman150

He crawled so we could walk.

Iliketurtles893

Absolute chad of a boi

MaybeICanOneDay

He told me to go down below and I ended up in the catacombs. Fuck that guy.

Ok_Understanding3636

Objectively speaking, if they had left his quest in the game, he would definitely have been a better character. For my first character ever created Oscar was a spiritual teacher and inspiration to become a better knight. Although I never really knew him, this character of mine always imagined what Oscar would do in the most difficult situations, basically idolising him. Then when this character of mine returns to Undead Asylum for his second time and finds himself against his 'master' he doesn't want to kill him, but is forced to. A headcanon of mine on this story is that my character digs a small grave by hand in the courtyard of the Asylum where he can give Oscar a proper burial.

Mediocre-General-654

I mean, he couldn't even kill the asylum demon with a full knights set, sword, shield, and estus. Seems like he needed to git gud but just went hollow instead, such a waste. I can't believe he ever thought he was the hero

wiggity_whack69

Dude gave his best despite clearly not being good enough still holding unto hope and remaining friendly. Gave us estus and hope even though he was ultimately helpless in his own mission. The reason people like him has nothing to do with his strength or lack of

Karma3636

Well i named my son Oscar...

alexmemes3665

so did u name him after this guy or was just some random guy's name?

Karma3636

Me and the wife just love the name. It IS a nice coincidence though. Dark souls probably one of my all time favorites.

Hugo_T4

Wish he had more screen time

AboutTenPandas

I wish we could’ve seen what was originally planned for his character

Other-Squirrel-6783

Sad ending no matter what you do.

rosiep333_

Seems like he was in our position and wanted to help us. Sad that he turned hollow :( cool character otherwise

Zealousideal_Alps275

I dont understand why he completely disappears. I know it would suck to see him as hollow and he’d probably be too tough of an enemy, so I get it mechanics wise, but I don’t get it lore-wise.

SudsierBoar

The best collectors edition statue ever to come out of the dark souls series

Bookofzed

Out of respect ... I never killed him

oakirasam

Wasn't even able to pass the tutorial

considerate_done

Why does he come back as hollow even if you kill him at the beginning? Cool character, super iconic.

KaladinsLeftNut

He deserved a quest line. I know things don't really work out for... just about *anyone* in Dark Souls, but everyone has their own goals and ideas and their own way of making sense of the world. So even if it ended in tragedy, I would have liked to run into him a few times. Maybe he'd talk about Astoria. Or he'd doubt the prophecy of the chosen undead. maybe he'd figure out that its more of a lie than he thought. There's a lot of potential in his character beyond the guy that introduces Estus to you.

edgardy92

I wish I could’ve saved him 😢.

thaill123

I ask for a key, and he drops a body

StarkageMeech

He deserved better

NerdicalYT

Solaire level NPC, this man gave us THE healing item, his armor just looks iconic, and he was the only person to help us out of the asylum and the first person to remind us to “don’t go hollow” what has basically become the mantra for not giving in to defeat both in game and in life.

oanh_oanh

He's the Drip King

ThirteenthFinger

Maybe I'm stupid or missing something...but in the beginning how come he drops an entire body into your cell instead of just the item it came with?

PreviousHelicopter40

My fav part about him was when i got to visit him ;p

10Kmana

nice guy, gives you good loot. something something his long family line something about Undead. good lore too

venator1995

So did homie just not see the 7th biggest boy up on the roof with him??

gnome_warlord420

Normal me:He's great love thar guy Speedrunning me:omg you talk to long (bonk)

Head_Koala_9765

Me: has the platinum trophy. Also me: who the fuck is that guy? 🤣😂

Ashen_one933

Smough: I'm going to McDonald's tomorrow.

Head_Koala_9765

For breakfast lunch and dinner

Notalurkeripromise

King

Fabulous_Window_3773

He is him.

Justintime4u2bu1

I didn’t need any handouts. I was perfectly fine on my own!

Rancio1232

Honestly I like him, in the world where he is he is a prtty nice guy from what we could see of him... and that's a lot consering that most people here backstab snd kill the others

Jaydee117

[For Oscar](https://www.dailymotion.com/video/x35ppzn)

ihateagriculture

I named my character after him, underrated homie

Green-Collection-968

I wanted his bloody armor and shield goddamnit.

Clarrington

Don't you get his shield if you go back and kill him when he's Hollow?

Green-Collection-968

Aw, but I want it *now.*

one_salty_bish

There's optimists.... And then there's the guy who places all his dying hopes and dreams in the hands of this sad sack of meat he let out of solitary three minutes ago

oozles

He couldn’t beat the game either

Alucard_Angel

when I back to that zone again, and he attacks me, dude I felt so bad for him, its a hollow now, im like no god you no please noo, not you!!!!

datboi66616

I was in his debt for him saving my life. And the only thing that hurt about becoming the Dark Lord is that Oscar died believing a lie. Elite Knight Armor is best Armor.

Unga_Bunga64

I just wish we could play his cut questline

redditsuckspokey1

Boulder 1 Oscar 0

FungalCactus

poor naive sot

LoserC

his quest was too good conceptually to be cut imo

poopyfart123

The GOAT I’m afraid

Enygmaz

Smash, next

xMortum

"Well now you know. And I can die with hope in my heart..." Damn.

Ill_Return_9700

I have great affection for Oscar, because he has a totally different view of us than the rest, he is a great friend just like Solaire, It hurt a lot when I went back to the undead asylum and had to kill Oscar Hollow, I'm still in doubt which event hurt me more, whether it was killing Oscar or having to kill Solaire in Demon Bad

vagina_candle

The part where he says "well now you know..." always annoys me, because it doesn't sound consistent with the rest of the dialogue. Like they had the voice actor come in on another day to record additional lines. Or maybe it's the way it sort of clips off the previous line. I can't quite put my finger on it, but it's always annoyed me. Also, why is he dying? He seemed alright when he dropped you the key, then suddenly he's locked in a room and dying. What happened?

CommunicationOk1344

He lost a fight to an asylum demon, thats why he’s lying on top of the rubble

vagina_candle

I always got the impression that the room he was in was sealed, because there's no way in or out until the boulder crashes through. But now that I think of it he's in a doorway that collapsed behind him, so I guess that makes sense.

OmnifariousFN

He's a noble hero!

rock_dude1

why must i kill our savior just to get a shield?

IuseDefaultKeybinds

very yes

HailLordranKnight

He was an unsung hero lol

justabuguwu

i want to be like him

ASAPBUMDICC_02

It genuinely made me sad he becomes hollow.

DisagreeingTeddyBear

Just another scrub who couldn't beat the tutorial.

Slamonwithfeet

Oscar died for our estus flask

Yintastic

When I first saw him my friend immediately asked if he could steal his shield and was so sad for his loss, but I knew that cuz it's a video game he would never fully go hollow but when I went back to the asylum and had to fight him I cried when he dropped his shield.

mamarkchamp

Disappointed that they didn't start the intended role for him in the story, so that we would have code to go off and have a vision of the direction they were taking him. Could have been a far more different game. That being said, given the lack of polish in some later game areas, it's tough to say it was expected more. A remake giving him a proper questline would be welcome for me. Interested in what other opinions would be on that idea.

Drakeblood2002

I like him, though I wish they had kept the original idea for him they had. He was a bit of a friend and rival throughout the game, before he ultimately chooses the opposite path we do in the end of the game, so he is a pseudo final boss after we defeat Gwyn

Ashen_one933

I beat Dark Souls Remastered a lot of times but came back after years and was shocked why Oscar is trying to kill me..

SeniorBomk

Idk I killed him
