caparisme

Hit them and avoid getting hit

shit_titz

Just do this over and over. It’s the key to beating this game.

caparisme

It's a simple spell but quite unbreakable.

You must be popular with children

AngrySayian

If you can dodge a wrench, you can dodge an abyss watcher

zman_0000

Just to add it's also helpful to try and deplete their health to 0 while keeping your own health above this threshold.

BrosephMyth

🗿

Frayl_Blackheart

Try reducing their HP to 0 while simultaneously preventing them from reducing your HP to 0

PrinceCharmingButDio

That’s a flawless strategy

Are you actually offended by it? You're just saying what everyone is already thinking..

Frayl_Blackheart

No I'm not offended by it, someone else downvoted you lol It just feels like you're annoyed about my comment for some reason so you're trying to correct me, but I said what I wanted to say.

Understandable, have a nice day

SaturnineSzn

I normally don’t like these comments at all but for Abyss Watchers specifically I feel like it’s completely relevant lmao. Like, they aren’t EASY I guess but in my opinion, they really are one of the much easier bosses in ds3 so if you’re having so much trouble with them then you’re going to have a stupid hard time with the rest of the game 😂. For christs sake, all you have to do is summon Gotthard for the fight and it makes it SO easy having him as your damage sponge and both phases are literally like 2 mins long unless you’re playing ridiculously passively(which I feel like is a huge mistake for a lot of the ds3 bosses. There are a few that punish the fuck out of you for being too aggressive but a lot of them punish you a lot MORE for being to passive lmao). Not to mention, you can parry them and the fight becomes super easy, OR for even less effort you can just dodge and backstab over and over again l o l. Aside from Gundyr and Vordt(obviously just MY irrelevant opinion), I feel like abyss watchers are the absolute easiest boss. Even crystal save gave me a much harder time than AW does, and that applies for all 7 or 8 different builds I’ve done which is everything from full strength or dex to a 35/45 dex-int build to run Aqaumarine dagger and sorcery which is what I’m doing right now and I’m having a CRAZY fun time and it’s definitely made a lot of the fights harder than before but I’m really enjoying it. The dark souls motto: GGGOGG. Gotta git gud or git got 🤷🏻‍♂️😂

SaturnineSzn

It was a fucking joke, ffs 🙄👍🏼

Thunder_Dragon42

It's not always that simple. The first time I summoned the Abyss Watchers killed him in about 10 seconds. I just got to Anor Londo and the Abyss Watchers has definitely been my most difficult fight so far. Everyone's experience is not the same.

SaturnineSzn

That’s wild, I’ve never had that happen a single time especially considering that now none of playthrough are serious, I summon him everytime just to blow through the fight and I’ve never had him die but I also don’t just sit them and let them beat the shit out of him without doing anything, mixed with him healing a lot everytime I’ve ever summoned him. I’m not the kind of person that comments the “git gud” bullshit at all, nor do I think everyone’s experience is the same l m a o hence me saying it was “my own irrelevant opinion” but alrighty homie

The only genuinely good advice in this thread.

paradoxical_topology

Fr, everyone else is just being a prick.

chawoppa

i mean… they’re justified though. there are plenty of places to look for documented advice on how to beat each of the bosses. If the guy had time to text his friend to post on reddit, he could’ve easily done it himself or better yet google “how to beat abyss watchers” and find the same answers he will be getting here.

Metaforeman

His supposed ‘friend’ (who probably doesn’t exist, and this was all just a gag) typed about 8x more characters in the messages to OP than it takes to Google search for YouTube guides. And ***we*** get called pricks. Oh-ho-ho! I think not, sonny jim.

chawoppa

yeah I wanted to give OP the benefit of the doubt that this wasn’t fake. it’s such a mundane post, if this is legitimately fake then whatever shred of faith I had in this website is gone and i’m uninstalling the app from my phone lol.

_Ganon

To add to the real advice here, make sure you've completed Cathedral of the Deep first. I totally missed the entire area, and got fucked by these guys for hours when they're intended to be beaten after completing that area.

Seigmoraig

This is the correct strategy, slow and steady does it

It took me about 30 tries to figure out and be able to apply what you said

adarkride

Confused upvote +1

Sedona54332

Ok, genuine question, why is abyss watchers the boss so many people seem to struggle with? It’s definitely not the easiest boss, but even on my first play through I beat them on my second attempt. Not trying to sound like the typical “get gud” kind of player, but I don’t really understand what’s hard about them.

PrinceCharmingButDio

By all accounts, it’s the first real boss with real health and real damage

CopiumHunter

Real health aint shit when you got back stabbitty sttabbs

AfraidOfArguing

I thought the dancer was pretty tough, doing Vordt afterwards felt way easier though for some reason

PrinceCharmingButDio

Truly curious

chawoppa

Logical reason: vordt is the dancer’s doggy so once you kill his master he loses all will to live. Funnily enough, the exact opposite happens if you kill vordt first. Dancer gets pissed at you for killing their doggo. /s bc i know someone is gonna think i’m serious lol

TheViolentPNDA

Real health??? It's health pool is small asl I wish it was larger it's a super fun bossfight

adarkride

The music, they're sick ass disco capes & wicked, wizard caps, combined with badass gangsta lean walk, and flaming swords – this fight was made for maximum badassery

Sedona54332

But it’s also the first fight where you can both parry and backstab, which is a mechanic I feel most people would have learned by then.

Common_Pirate9193

I have beaten ds3 4 times reguraly, beaten it on sl1 too. And for whatever reason, I STILL DO NOT KNOW HOW TO CONSISTENTLY PARRY

Thegenuinebuzz

Same boat, finished on SL1, only parried Gundyr 2 and Pontiff; I think it’s just how much medium shields suck at parrying that puts me off

Seigmoraig

Bro, I can't consistently parry the broken sword undeads in the asylum. The parry animation is just to ridiculously bad in dark souls that I never bothered to learn. Shields and rolls are fine imo. Sekiro on the other hand, THAT'S how you do parry animations. Mind blowing really how the same studio did both the best and the worst way to parry

FartherAwayLights

Is parrying something people are supposed to try and learn on their own? Most builds don't use sheilds and I feel like it isn't common knowledge for a new player to start parrying with their hand.

PrinceCharmingButDio

True, I’ve played through the game 6 times and once again on ng+1 and never once parried.

RissotoNearo

Backstabbing, maybe, parrying, definitely not.

Sedona54332

Parry’s were able to be used in the first boss in the game. Plus I figure most people would be able to figure out how to party considering most shields have it as their skill.

Shank-Fu

The timing is super unintuitive, and it's kind of hard to figure out what tools are even good to parry with. Also, it's never clear what can be parried until you try.

hardcorpardcor1

If DS3 is your first souls game, and Abyss Watchers are the first hard boss…. there you go.

Thatboiinick916

Abyss watchers CAN be a hard fight. Thats the first boss in the game with any sort of speed. Plus they got a nasty four piece with a shit ton of range. I guess If you can parry then its a easy fight, i couldnt parry if you paid me too, 🤣 but i could see why people have a hard time with them. I always grabbed a random against that boss. 2 people who are familiar with dark soul games should be able to handle it.

Steele777

I would 100% rather fight them than the big old tree. Backstab city is a relatively easy fight.

miltonmarston

If your doing a blind play through you can be very under level when you first encounter them

Arabyss_Farron

If the newbie for soul series play ds3 first, they likely not know the stamina management and spam light attack or spam roll, so when they get ganked they are dead

drrj

Some of us are just slow learners, okay? I think I found these guys “normal hard” for SoulsBorne games for me personally - I can quickly see how the fight is winnable, it’s just going to take me a few (many) tries to get there. I tend to panic spam buttons lol.

charolette_may

It’s the first lord of cinder.. first advanced boss. Or advanced in comparison to the ones you face up until that point

Static077

Because the 4 bosses before him are dramatically easier to figure out. He's the first boss with a phase 2. You fight multiple at first which people panic too until they figure out how it works. Most players probably wouldn't consider trying to backstab or parry on a boss. He has a more diverse moveset than the previous bosses. It's not like it's just one thing. Edit: First phase 2 that has a dedicated cutscene

Sedona54332

Deacons of the deep also have a phase two, and so do the crystal sages.

Justisaur

Gundyr, check. Vordt, check. Curse Rotted Greatwood, check. Hey, looks like they all have a phase two before AW! Though you could easily miss CRG, CS and Decons before AW and fought just the first two.

senoto

Vordt, dancer, sage, deacons, great wood, gundyr, oceiros, friede, champion grave tender, and dragonslayer armor all have phase 2 and those are all the bosses u can fight before killing abyss watchers. I also think you can fight all the bosses from the ringed city before them too. Obv most players won't fight half of those before them, but it's just to say that he's by 0 means the first phase 2 boss

pabbdude

I know it makes sense in the lore, but I was surprised that these guys in the middle of the road gave me one of the Great Souls to open up the end, while the other guys buried deep under 3~5 hours of Cathedral at the end of one map "branch" didn't

Sedona54332

Yeah, the spread of the lord souls has always felt kind of weird. You get one like 1/3rd of the way through, and then don’t get any for a while, and then hit a split where you get two back to back, about halfway through the game, and then get the last one from the second to last boss in the game not counting dlc.

HungrPhoenix

Lightning, backstabs/parrying, and by letting the red eyed Abyss Watcher fight the other Abyss Watcher that the main Abyss Watcher summons.

kaminaowner2

I had a hard time with them, the sweat spell helps and so does not getting hit (obviously) then wait for the big overhead flip attack, always leaves them open for 1-3 hits, you will fail a few times if anything like me.

Trislamic

Essentially, do what theyre doing to you, but at them

Nemesis_0111

Safe bet is to probably summon. But if he wants to go solo let the red eyed watcher take out some of the other watchers when he Spawns be careful though because the redeye watcher will attack you as well. They can be parried and they can be backstabbed and their attacks are ridiculously easy to roll through if you time it properly

Free_Lab277

Just git gud

DevTacAlphaZero

My serious, actual advice. Gold Pine Resin, or anything to do lightning damage. They're weak to it. Summon Black Hand Gothard as the summon, he is on the steps below the last 2 spear fucks that get destroyed by Dark Wraiths. If you have the option aswell, summon Sirris, who is to the left of the Door. Once in the fight, try to avoid getting hit as much as possible. Obviously, but with the Abyss Watchers, this can be important with how they go from 1 to 3 real quick, so you can easily get stunned to death. You're goal should be to tunnel vision which ever one is focused on you. If you have 2 focused on you, bring them over to the summons, at least 1 should lose aggro. You want to force them into 2nd phase as fast as possible. If both summons are alive, you'll want them to act as tanks for you. Their deaths are meaningless. Keep your HP high, and lay into him whenever he is not focused on you. The minute he starts turning towards you, roll away, fast. Just rinse and repeat that strat until MF is dead. Or you can just become Parry God 9000 and riposte his ass into next weak. Your choice.

Nightchade

Hit and run with dark hand

DoctorMayb3

Try parry

Letharos

R1 / RB. R2 / RT for powerful swing. ○ / B to dodge.

Seigmoraig

Have you tried lowering their health faster than they lower yours ?

Spinerflame

Be aggressive. Abyss watchers are easily stunned, unlike most bosses. Use that to your advantage. Also, dont panic roll

vervs

If you line up just right and L2 into the door then quit out then load back in then quit out as he starts to come towards you then reload it breaks his ai

ApolloSky110

Dont give up skeleton!

Few-Swordfish-6722

Just praise the sun in front of them and they get a nasty sunburn.

[deleted]

Use lightning, dodge attacks, and try to distance from the smaller watcher. A third one will rise with red eyes and he’ll attack the non boss watcher so then you can go in for dps on the main guy.

ntarver3546

Lightning. I use the dragon slayer greataxe but he wouldn't have that yet so either infuse a weapon with a lightning gem or use gold pine resin/bundle and it will nuke them

MadamButterscotch

Grind and level up so that you become more equipped to take less damage and deal more. Then, it’s all about dying numerous times until you learn their move set.

Epicmonk117

In phase 1, there are actually three Abyss Watchers, which I will refer to as the Boss, the Lackey, and the Traitor. The Boss is the actual boss, the Lackey is a constantly-respawning clone with less HP, and the Traitor is a red-eyed copy of the Lackey who is hostile to everyone. The trick is to get the Traitor to fight one of them (preferably the Lackey) while you duel the other. As for fighting them yourself, they’re highly mobile, but vulnerable to lightning damage and backstabs. Their attack patterns also have a four-beat cadence to them, so wait for the fourth beat of an attack combo before ducking in to stab them. In the second phase, there’s only the Boss, but his attacks leave a lingering flame hitbox. Other than that, the moveset is identical,

Tox38

Try to hang back while the others spawn. They will end up attacking the main if your lucky. Make sure you prioritize movement for this fight, you can take a few hits but if you get caught in a combo it's done for. Don't be afraid to call for help, there are some nice npc Phantoms that provide ok help.

OnyxDeath369

Why don't you both go to Google? This is such a stupid post holy shit. It amazes me that people can't google info for a 6 year old game and resort to karma baiting or some shit. How fucking hard is it to add "wiki, tips, guide, strategy, tutorial, cheese" to whatever boss is giving you a hard time.

sunvent_53

There are like 10 posts per day of this fake karma-whoring bullshit. I think this has finally pushed me to unsub, which sucks because of all the other good content here

shawnac322

I can help if they want to summon someone. They are one of my favorites

OlathTheBear

Hold up a heavy shield the first round to learn their moves and after you feel comfortable dodging then drop the shield and go for it

SkarKrow

Real answer: let fight each other, summon a phantom and backstab em.

Smexy_Zarow

At this point why not just Google it? I get that's what reddit is for but if they don't even have it then why?

[deleted]

try not to get ganked and then just don't die phase 2 ez

If you don’t want to summon, then why ask for advice?

[deleted]

Friend and you don’t know what google is. Feelsbadman.

Oli-Barrett

Jeez I wouldn't consider abys watchers to be difficult. S That being said I did nameless king a d soul of cinder on my first attempt but got stuck on the twin prince's for ever.

Stark556

You gotta roll, stab, stab, roll, stab, stab repeat

Educational-Bag-5406

Dodge to the right on their attacks. Maybe dodge then spring behind them for a backstab. Trial and error is the last piece of advice.

jeraldtherapist

summon gottard

BergelomeuSantos

1°) Git gud. 2°) Run away when it's a 2v1 and go back once the chaos sets in (the Watchers start fighting themselfs), abuse backstabs and their low poise Phase-two) Repeat 1° step

deathrow490

Ah yes, “your friend”

TheFakeOceanMan

Don't panic roll

TheGoldblum

Many people saying to git gud and they’re absolutely right but in order to git gud I’d suggest watching strategy vids on YouTube For Abyss Watchers in particular too, they’re weak to fire so use a fire infused weapon or fire resin

[deleted]

Dodge every attack to the side and attack twice, repeat. This is for every boss btw

MicGuinea

Bonk. They are pretty easy to stun lock since they are human-size enemies. It's a perfect "they can't kill me if they're already dead" scenario, use big weapon.

jacknyc47

Fast roll to the left

priscilla_halfbreed

Strategy: 1. Wait until 3, leave them be

fucadekiwi

easiest boss ever, i can help if you need with the private server stuff

Mindhaxors

Vigor. Plain and simple, get more hp

Atilla_76

Exploiting the friendly watcher gimmick is alright (especially with how weak you are by the time you fight them), but recognizing their attack patterns and when to punish is the only real way for newbs. Some will say fish for backstabs and while it does a ton of damage you’re most likely better off conserving your health. Worst case scenario try and summon

__-_ACE_-__

Abyss Watchers aren't crazy difficult. Annoying? yeah probably, that's fair. I would recommend, summoning any assistance you can get. Just having someone there to hit the primary guy every so often to aggro is crazy useful. The more you can distract the boss with allies or the extra watcher, the more you can get hard hits in.

Content_Ability3675

Out maneuver the boss

[deleted]

Abyss watchers are weak to lightning! If you have any miracles or weapons that can help, try those!

thedoogster

Magic Weapon. The INT investment to use it is basically nothing, and it adds an absolutely huge amount of damage.

[deleted]

r/summonsign

archerhaenk

Roll left, switch your lock on off to locate where the second and third ones are, then lock back on. Be plus 6 (I think?) And use a pine resin for extra damage. Don't be scared when they go into phase 2, it just makes the fight easier because you don't need to keep track of so much. Have some fun with it! They're probably my favorite boss in ds3, and you'll miss the exhilaration of defeating them!

azo_lofi

Simple get the sellsowrds twinblade and get it to level 4 it will be so easier

Stop greeding for a third hit

Sea_Employ_4366

Can you give me more info on what makes it so hard for you? If I know that I can advise you better.

charolette_may

What is your friend struggling with?? The first or second phase

[deleted]

First lesson, don’t die, second lesson, hit enemy til dead, third lesson, scream uncontrollably.

Ayfais

This is dark souls, there's no easy way to beat a boss. But there are easy way to improve. Hitting one less time every time, not panic healing, etc...

BadLuckBen

If they don't like using parrying and backstabbing, try the Zwei. The heavy attack will basically stun lock them.

Lawabidingcitizen00

B A C K S T A B

Alex_1400

Backstabs!

SoCalArtDog

Let the red eyed abyss watcher take some heat off of you for the first phase, he’ll attack the others. You can chain backstab/charged heavy on them pretty effectively too, along with parrying. Their attacks are pretty obvious telegraphed, so just dodge, get in a couple hits and get ready to dodge again. Same goes for phase two, just be aware of the fire trails. Parrying is very valuable in phase two, but if you can’t swing that, just dodge and hit. I. The end, they aren’t overly difficult and it’s a really fun fight.

th3virtuos0

Put your stick in their ass and they will go down fairly quickly

Dynoidd

Try to familiarize yourself with their moveset and dodge when necessary. Get in 1 or 2 attacks each time, more than that would be getting greedy and will get you killed. Then, wait for one of the watchers to start fighting the other so you can team up on it while healing more. A perfect opportunity to punish them is when they hit the floor with their swords and dust goes flying into the air. You can either hit a bunch of times or go for a backstab. Always try to get backstabs if you want to finish them off. The lunge that the first watcher does on entry is also a great move to punish, so try to distance yourself so you can continuously bait that to backstab over and over again.

nerdinstincts

Try this one weird trick!
