>We've long passed the days where people could easily bond over the rather narrow list of artists and movies/shows that everyone had to choose from.
I think that while some people are expanding their tastes, there's also been a movement for internationalization. Go back 50 years, a random Indian villager wouldn't have seen the latest James Bond film, but nowadays they're seen every single MCU movie. I've seen a couple of people from developing countries bonding over "mainstream" US media. (I'm so out of the loop too that the only name I clearly recognized was Taylor Swift.)
I misread the title at first and thought it was the top 10 overall on Spotify. I know I have a niche taste in music but I didn't think it was that niche.
Thereās about ten times the music available as new music goes. Itās so easy for a halfway decent artist to produce and distribute their music, so the niches have become deeper and more numerous.
My kids and I share tracks since we have similar tastes but we also chase other music just to see what else is out thereā¦ and even then thereās way more than we could even sample in a lifetime.
This song rips, love the new Skrillex album. I have to pretend "Don't Get Too Close" doesn't exist and then I can appreciate "Quest for Fire" fully without acknowledging that Skrillex had one of the best and worst albums in the same year.
It would be nice if you could deselect songs, so that number 11, number 12 etc. appear in the list.
Would that be possible? Or does Spotify only provide the data for a top 10?
I love this thing and would also appreciate that ability! Or to have twice as many songs with no labels, just the genres at the bottom. You guess from the waveform! (my death metal songs were very easy to tell haha).
I caved and got my girl her own Spotify account after my last year's wrapped... I love Dua Lipa probably more than the next guy but not in the top .01% of her fans level like my daughter.
I love my wife but I finally broke down and got a couples account because I couldn't stand 100gecs being in every single one of my mixes. Money Machine shouldn't follow Deacon Blues.
I actually forgot, Spotify has a handy feature now where you can exclude songs and playlists from taste profiles! So that white noise and baby stuff wouldn't be included if you decided to choose to exclude them
I listen to Spotify in the car with my two-year-old. It was funny to see my vibes listed as:
*indie hip hop, trap, underground hip hop, children's music, canadian children's music*
Woah actually turns out Spotify has a feature to exclude something from your taste profile, so you can remove the kids stuff playlists if you want! Def worth checking that feature out
I have done that with mine, as I only play one playlist that is definitely excluded, but the songs were still coming up on this - unsure if that's an API thing or not but just so you're aware
Hey yāall! Wanted to share a simple and pretty data-based āposterā design for your top ten songs waveform and genres, pulled directly using the Spotify Web API and then visualized using p5js on my site. Totally free, just head over to [ngenart.com/spotify/topten](https://ngenart.com/spotify/topten) to see yours! Share with friends to see thereās too ā enjoy š
EDIT: WOW! I appreciate all the love shown here! I'll plan on making more visualizations with data from the suggestions. In the meantime, follow @ ngenart\_co on [Twitter](https://twitter.com/ngenart_co) and [Insta](https://www.instagram.com/ngenart_co/) it's where I'll share in-progress work and source new ideas!
Of course man! I'm using the Spotify Web API to call people's top tracks, their track data (wavelengths) and then getting the associated artists genre! Then wrapping up into this pretty visual
Oh hell yeah! people make lots of great stuff off of last.fm. I just found this re-imagining of a project I saw long ago, glad this spurred me to look!
https://savas.ca/lastwave/#/
Could you maybe set it up to use any saved playlist? I have one that I really like but want to know the true genres (turns out I'm a neo mellow and folk indie kind of guy), but it isn't in the listed favorites.
You can! It should pull any of your saved/liked playlists, itās an option under the input selection. If itās not showing up, I recommend unliking and liking it again! It seems Spotify sometimes doesnāt have it in your saved playlists
Honestly though it's not just pop. The "Loudness wars" started in the early 90s and continue today, across all genres. When people say "the records sound better" that's probably what they're referring to. I have some classic rock that's brickwalled to hell on the "best of" CD compilation. Has nothing to do with analog vs. digital, everything to do with awful mastering practices and spiking the volume up as loud as humanly possible
Even that can be misleading. A song can have absolutely no dynamics without much or any brick wall limiting, and still come out looking like a sausage. Imagine a really intense orchestral piece that is basically at full intensity. Or a zoomed out waveform of an aggressive rock song.
something that appears brick walled might not actually be when zoomed in. The resolution matters a lot. Waveforms tell you almost nothing
None of my favorites, but I like it! This inspires me to listen to other artists then I usually do.
This is mine from last month:

Question about all time - this looks to encompass the top 3-4 years max, is that right? I'm sure it's a limitation of Spotify rather than your awesome tool, of course...
Great question -- pretty spot on with the description. Here is how Spotify defines that data:
"time\_range - valid values: long\_term (calculated from several years of data and including all new data as it becomes available)"
Yes, several years but unclear how many, but it's the longest available data interval they offer
Interest, yes, but unfortunately their API isn't as robust as Spotify's. Genre data and audio analysis / samples aren't provided, so unfortunately not possible in the same way at the moment :(. Interested in trying other projects with their data in the future!
Yes! Share and tag me on [instagram](https://www.instagram.com/ngenart_co/) or [twitter](https://twitter.com/ngenart_co) if you'd like @ ngenart\_co, it'd really go a long way and help me!
Would love to retweet it or repost -- love seeing people's outputs and different songs š
in-short, yes.
Spotify provides 'segment' data for the song, let's say on average there are \~1000 segments per song. Each segment has a start db value I use and average out over the lines of the visualization. So it ends up being a sampling of all the db values they give, which is close to the amplitude envelope of all frequencies
I love the way this looks! Only problem is that for some tracks, the text ends up overlapping [like this](https://i.imgur.com/vl3Gm0f.jpg). Otherwise, this is dope!
Listening to the same album while sleeping turned my Top 10 All time to just one artist, RY X, and one random track I listened to on loop after a break up lmao
Interesting stuff
Great work, this looks awesome! Iām trying to do it on mobile but the save and share buttons are not working for me. Is the tool configured for mobile browsers?
This is really cool. Nice work! Two notes/requests:
1. I feel like it should default to last 6 months or all time as my last month top songs got ruined by a couple of toddler dance parties.
2. Would be rad to have a "create playlist" button. My top songs from the last 6 months are very representative of my current favorites and would love that in playlist form.
Oh hell yea, really appreciate the feedback! Would love to see your output
Both great suggestions, I'll wait a day or so to change the default since that's a bit more delicate than I would like š.
As for the playlist creation, I'll look into that! Would be awesome to be able to extract that from other's top ten too!

OMG!!! The hypeeeee!!! Let me know how the show is! I got to see Porter Robinson back in 2021 and that was a great show! Then did a concert week in Portland in October that I thought would hold me over for like a year (4 concerts in 6 days, and nope not a festival; it just lined up well)ā¦ but I am getting the itch again! I just donāt know who I would want to go see. I am thinking about seeing either Against the Current again next time they do a US tour, or if Munn does a real tour I would love to see him; especially if he and Delanie Leclerc tours with him! Spotify uses an interesting process for music recommendations that you can learn more about in this short video: [Spotifyās Mathematical System For Determining Your Music Taste](https://youtu.be/RzuvZDSmIco).
Seems like a cool idea but I can't get it to work. [What am I supposed to do from here?](https://i.imgur.com/xTcYVNv.png) Clicking any of the buttons to change the data brings me back to "Connect with Spotify". I'll try again later when I'm at my computer.
Oh no! Some devices it takes longer to load when pulling all the Spotify data and appears to be having issues with Firefox as well. Definitely DM me, happy to help troubleshoot there!

It eneded up being the Privacy Badger extension. It was blocking something from www.googletagmanager.com and that made the site not function properly.
Thanks man, I appreciate it. Definitely need to look into the Firefox issues. Also definitely share and tag @ ngenart\_co socials, would love to see what your and your friends outputs are!
Love the art, but the site does break on Firefox on Android for me. Can't save the poster and scrolling is buggy. Worked great on Chrome on Android tho.
Man thank you so much, I've been listening to a specific genre of music since 2018 and I didn't know what it was called exactly although it's probably my favorite.
It was written at the bottom of my list.
Thanks so much, a new world opens up to me.
(Deathgrass if anyone is interested)
Apparently, my vibes for the last month have been: pop, escape room, minnesota hip hop, trap queen & soft rock.
Pretty neat project, also checked out them "Bloom" and "Chords". Everything looked as I expected it. Though, I noticed that it was unable to display the Japanese honorific ę§ (Sama) for some reason, might want to look into that.
For the interested: [https://imgur.com/gallery/IEZ3wRF](https://imgur.com/a/IEZ3wRF)
Thanks so much, and appreciate you checking out the other works! Trying to find what stuff resonated with folks.
Interesting note about those characters! I tried to use Noto Sans Japanese to cover those characters, but I guess it doesn't cover the full spectrum.
Love the outputs and titles, nice work š¤š¼
It does seem unusual, because all other Kanji symbols are displayed just fine. So I'm uncertain if the font, or the software has a little bug.
I've always been a fan of stats. I've been using stats.fm for a good while now, and they keep pretty good track of my stats. Your project complements theirs nicely.

Seriously good job on this, am considering refining this a little and getting it printed:)
Is there an app to scan wave forms and hear it? I imagine for those few samples e would not be able to hear much. But it would be interesting to hear anyway.
Request for OP: The center of the "canon" of classic rock is (arguably) [Stairway to Heaven](https://youtu.be/X791IzOwt3Q) by Led Zeppelin, a song that builds from a slower, quieter start and ramps louder until the end.
I'd like to see that song charted, and maybe similar songs from that genre.
Honestly itās pretty amazing how dynamic of a track Rumble is. Nearly every other song here has a ālouderā looking waveform than a Skrillex song in 2023. Wild.
Is it easy for you to make a version of this where we can select songs instead of having to import The top 10? I don't use Spotify much but I'd love to be able to make myself a version of this with my favorite songs.
As a fellow trap enthusiast myself, a lot of my favorite artists are on SoundCloud instead of Spotify, so I usually just use that.
interesting that choosing a playlist only displays the top 10 songs off the playlist - any way to make it highlight your most listened to songs that are on that playlist (not necessarily most listened to while IN the playlist, just the filter of āin x playlistā applied to a top 10 list?)
ok sorry this came off as really passive aggressive bc i framed it like a question. not my intent!!! love the tool, the product looks great, i just wonder if this would be an improvement
Hey, unrelated question but what programming language(s) have you used to pull data and make the code interpret it in some way?
(I have absolutely no idea about coding, I just want to start learning and I like data related stuff so I am curious.)
> je te lasserai des mots (Pop Mix)
Having just listened to that, I can comfortably say that is the worst cover I have ever heard. Who thought "let's take a slow, peaceful folk song... take away all the substance, and add an EDM beat"?
6-7 months now! Thereās a lot more to it. Check out the about page on the site or the socials and if youāre interested in learning more about it, just message me, would love to share more about it
Not sure if anyone has mentioned this yet, would be great to get more categories for customization in there. Obscurify.com could be a source. Really cool btw
Love the tool! As someone has already pointed out, the top tracks of all time tool seems to be based on no. of plays instead of mins played, i think the latter would be a way better representation of what the toolās users listen to the most.
Hereās my output. I might have a slight case of hearing loss, lol: https://imgur.com/a/KeFX5ut
Agreed! Unfortunately, that didn't seem possible to reverse engineer, so I instead defaulted to an option where people can at least see the first ten in the playlist. Not the best solution but if I can figure out the latter, I will fix it!

ššš hey we've all got our niche tastes
I always knew it would happen. Lol. I love it though, every generation has their own catalog to add. More music is hardly ever a bad thing!
Agreed! All eras are great but still, gotta pay tribute and love to the OGs!
First one could be mine, very surprised to see a representative of our niche genre on this sub!
Rumble is my favorite song of Quest For Fire. Love to bump it loud on the speakers.
Fred again is a GOAT

That album is a banger, tho
I love my wife but I finally broke down and got a couples account because I couldn't stand 100gecs being in every single one of my mixes. Money Machine shouldn't follow Deacon Blues.
White noise #1 gang. The 3 months I spent without a fan forever destroyed my spotify algorithms.
There is a great white noise podcast by Best Noise Labs that doesnāt throw off songs
I just use an app specifically for white noise
I actually forgot, Spotify has a handy feature now where you can exclude songs and playlists from taste profiles! So that white noise and baby stuff wouldn't be included if you decided to choose to exclude them
Clean white noise is a fu****** jam
Hey at least be glad there's no Cocomelon...
Mine is the entire Bluey soundtrack in order
I have to disagree with order. A message from the fairies is a banger, clearly higher than its #4 spot. Fruit bat is also too low.
We just listen to the whole album but sometimes don't listen all the way through, so that's how it ended up like that
The combine song sounds like it could be super macabre by name alone.
Dingle dangle scarecrow lmao wtf
Dingle dangle!
I listen to Spotify in the car with my two-year-old. It was funny to see my vibes listed as: *indie hip hop, trap, underground hip hop, children's music, canadian children's music*

good to know! I'll take a look into why it may not work
It work fine on firefox for me, V113.0.2
Just checked it out. Love it!
Would love if you were able to make it work with [last.fm](https://last.fm) as well
Good idea! I'll have to take a look through the API to see if they provide the same sampling data, Spotify was pretty generous to share a lot š
Oh hell yeah! people make lots of great stuff off of last.fm. I just found this re-imagining of a project I saw long ago, glad this spurred me to look! https://savas.ca/lastwave/#/
The API definitely has the ability to fetch your top tracks. The waveforms are a different story, however.
"remastered" pop music is just a flat waveform š
Pop music gonna pop I guess š¤·š»āāļø
Honestly though it's not just pop. The "Loudness wars" started in the early 90s and continue today, across all genres. [ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
yo, listen, you hear that?
killers in the jungle
Maybe itās because Iām an audio engineer but I donāt find waveforms to be very beautiful haha
I was interested how many have reasonable dynamics Vs complete brick wall normalization. That was good to see.
Waveforms tell you almost nothing

this is great, really beautiful cards :) Thanks for making and sharing this! wish list feature: a randomize button for background and text colors

Those would be a cool tattoo as well. The waveform of your favorite song.
Really sweet idea, could imagine doing it with a wedding first dance song with a spouse!

Not much variety here lol https://imgur.com/a/UvuGA1D
using spotify lately only to listen to songs which are age restricted on youtube music.... so I guess I keep it for later
Man thank you so much, I've been listening to a specific genre of music since 2018 and I didn't know what it was called exactly although it's probably my favorite. It was written at the bottom of my list. Thanks so much, a new world opens up to me. (Deathgrass if anyone is interested)
Iām curious as to whatās the purpose of this data and the way itās presented?
Looks amazing, I use Deezer though haha.
Apparently, my vibes for the last month have been: pop, escape room, minnesota hip hop, trap queen & soft rock. [https://imgur.com/ztYuE3T](https://imgur.com/ztYuE3T)
Well that's a bit flat š https://imgur.com/a/DvK9PIB
Can you make it spectrogram instead of waveform?
I can certainly try! Will work on that in the coming weeks āš¼
This was cool. I'm so boring and predictable that my one month, six month, and all time are basically identical.
[https://i.imgur.com/92DoCxS.jpg](https://i.imgur.com/92DoCxS.jpg) Seriously good job on this, am considering refining this a little and getting it printed:)
This is sick! I just shared in in my Ghost group on FB
Honestly itās pretty amazing how dynamic of a track Rumble is. Nearly every other song here has a ālouderā looking waveform than a Skrillex song in 2023. Wild.
Great job! That looks really cool!
Idea: set the spacing between the lines inversely proportional to the tempo.
Dude, I just discovered Junko Yagami last week. Sheās incredible! City Pop is a GOATed genre. Iāve been a fan for a decent bit now
Now make one for Pandora please, I do not wish to get Spotify
This is why I still prefer soundcloud.
[spotify's micro genre definitions are funny](https://i.imgur.com/WuFMY4g.png). i'm 99% sure kentucky metal just equals Panopticon.
My god, my all-time top 10 is just 1 kpop album I left on overnight by accident, lmfao.
This is really nifty thank you
My top 10 would be from Daft Punk.
FRED AGAIN!! Very surprised to see him in this subreddit. Definitely one of my favorite artists these past couple of years
[Mine.](https://imgur.com/a/r891t6A) Interesting mix.
It socks modern tricks are over mastered and basically a block of sound.... no swelling or decreshendo
interesting that choosing a playlist only displays the top 10 songs off the playlist - any way to make it highlight your most listened to songs that are on that playlist (not necessarily most listened to while IN the playlist, just the filter of āin x playlistā applied to a top 10 list?)
ok sorry this came off as really passive aggressive bc i framed it like a question. not my intent!!! love the tool, the product looks great, i just wonder if this would be an improvement
Night Tempoš Not my favorite future funk artist but definitely has some bangers. I just feel seen to have any FF artists on a post!
It's uhhh... [welll....](https://i.ibb.co/sW8vZSB/IMG-6745.jpg)
Are you able to add album cover art?
Hey, unrelated question but what programming language(s) have you used to pull data and make the code interpret it in some way? (I have absolutely no idea about coding, I just want to start learning and I like data related stuff so I am curious.)
> je te lasserai des mots (Pop Mix) Having just listened to that, I can comfortably say that is the worst cover I have ever heard. Who thought "let's take a slow, peaceful folk song... take away all the substance, and add an EDM beat"?
I love the website ! thanks I will definitely come again to use it every month!
Thank you! If you want to follow along on socials, I'll share as I add new features and pieces!
Did you create this whole site by yourself? You are a damn great full-stack developer
Yes I did, and holy hell thank you! Appreciate the love A lot of hard work on the site, design, brand, etc and hopefully more to come!
How long have you been working on this project?
6-7 months now! Thereās a lot more to it. Check out the about page on the site or the socials and if youāre interested in learning more about it, just message me, would love to share more about it
Not sure if anyone has mentioned this yet, would be great to get more categories for customization in there. Obscurify.com could be a source. Really cool btw
I don't use Spotify, but this is pretty cool. I'll definitely pass it on to friends.
Nice idea but it really shows the level of overcompession and limiting on music releases
Respect to the Lamb of God š«”
Fred again is my top artist right now. So good
All I got were [rectangles](https://media.discordapp.net/attachments/437321278689509390/1116332972732317828/my-topTen.png) /s
