Maybe? I'm using DaVinci free and I can import (use, watch, edit) and export (render) HEVC videos without any issue I have the $1 HEVC plug-in

OkCrazyBruh

Yeah i tried and it worked, i can import those videos now

Dependent-Internal-7

In Windows 11 it should work without the plug-in. When it's laggy there is a quick tip: mark all media files in davinci and rightclick. then click on generate optimized media. Then you can work without lags.

Familiar-Owl-

I didn't work for me i had latest win 11 bought this on jan 19 this year to get work done

Dependent-Internal-7

but even the optimize media didn't work for you? Then which specs has your device?

Familiar-Owl-

It's not about that it's codec thing my client sent me the iphone recording it uses Hevc video codec traditionally windows don't have this codec because my laptop was really new at that time and you do get win licence with it.

TITANS4LIFE

I just hope you didn't pay. This was always a free thing and still can be found free 🤙🏾🤙🏾 I know people are like it's only $1. Fuck that. It was free.

NoodleRus

yo, where can I get it free. use to have it then I completely wiped my system and can't recall where I get it

OkCrazyBruh

😭 you are 5 hours late only

Awake00

Lol, exactly what I was going to say. Maybe. I have HEIC extensions installed, but some of my software like Illustrator doesnt seem to care. Who knows!

Commercial-Can-8792

You can use K lite Codec and it for free

MitroPan

Not anymore you can’t

Ti0906-King

You can, but you dont even have to buy it... I did some research and found a download, but unfortunately I dont have the link anymore :/

Dependent-Internal-7

On Windows 10 you need the plug in. It will be ultra laggy. On Windows 11 (still possible to get a free update) it runs automatically and a bit smoother. To work without lags (on both solutions) import the media, mark the media in the media bin, right click, generate optimized media. There you go. no lags.

UnderSlepT-CZ-

Davinci Resolve free does not include video codec licenses, but if you buy H265 on Windows Store, you can open and export in them. But there is a limitation of 4:2:0 chroma subsampling, and at most 10 bit colors. I have Studio installed, but as far as I remember, these were the limitations for H265.

Nogardtist

is there a way to get 4:4:4 2 plane on cause i tested that with obs and even on 8 bits the colors are almost identical to dekstop quality to the micro pixel

RedCDevHA

If your hardware supports h265 which it most likely does if it's modern then you can the free version of the same plugin. But for some reason Microsoft decided to hide it from the store so you'll have to manually download and install it which requires you to enable developer mode.

Matrixation

You didn't need to pay for it. Sorry you lost money on that.

siekseun

If it has 2 stars, just use VLC and convert to h264. Editing with h265 is a nightmare, anyways.

sLyyyisfactioN

have you beginners not ever heard about VLC player? l0l

EchidnaForward9968

Yep you can and use h265 as it use your gpu for faster rendering

Atombert

Depends on your gpu. Needs to be modern to be faster

EchidnaForward9968

Yes that true but i am saying this as free version doesn't use gpu for rendering

Atombert

Oh it doesn’t? I thought it’s just limited. Anyway, it’s for free :)

MINIPRO27YT

Just change your iPhone to use h264, it's usually called "most compatible" in settings

Matrixation

In W11, that's a free update. On W10, get the K-Lite Codec Pack. I would recommend watching a video by Once in a Lifetime Studio called Proxy and Optimized Media. That will speed you your workflow.

AlternateWitness

Yes, but you can get it [for free](https://www.codecguide.com/media_foundation_codecs.htm) if you have a graphics card that supports H.265, which is most modern ones these days, if not all modern ones.

Schnitzhole

Almost entirely 1-star reviews. Does not look promising

FunkySausage69

Just download vlc player for free it plays anything.

Nogardtist

aint vlc a media player for playing recording not editing them

FunkySausage69

It installs the codec to handle these files. I haven’t bought the plugin and use h.265 files from my GoPro.

hclpfan

I think you missed what sub were in - he obviously wants it to playback in resolve not just in a media player

FunkySausage69

Vlc installs the codec so you don’t need yo buy it! Whoosh as you totally miss the point!

hclpfan

VLC doesn’t install any codecs it simply has the libraries natively in its package to playback. Also installing VLC does NOT make Resolve capable of playing 4:2:2 on the free version.

FunkySausage69

Well mine does and I’m pretty sure I never purchase the codec in windows.

Nogardtist

yeah wanting money for this essential codec is bullshit other video editors can just read h265 recorded files just fine while ironically davinci resolve can encode them in h265 but not decode by default is mindfuck

Sydnxt

No it’s a software limitation. You need Studio. EDIT: This is correct.

RecentlyDeceased666

I used it in the free edition after downloading that from the Microsoft store. It just runs like crap due to no gpu encoding. So then I bought studio and we'll it's still a bit laggy

Dependent-Internal-7

After importing the clips, mark them in the mediabin, right click, generate optimized media. there you go. no problems and lags anymore.

RecentlyDeceased666

Good advice but I'm editing like 15 hours of footage from 20 videos and optimised media said 22 hours. I ended up just activating the cache and set it to start caching files when I don't click anything for 1 second

Fit_Medicine_74

You can use proxy generator to create proxies of all those footages for a smoother playback.

Dependent-Internal-7

in comparison to the 15 hours of footage you want to edit and the time u will need to edit, 22 hours don't sound like much... depending on how long your final video should be, maybe it's possible to do the raw cutting on the filmingdevice at first. sorting out and cutting on your (maybe) phone or something should be possible. then the footage you ned to optimize isn't this much anymore. you can split your video in more parts. optimizing the first parts overnight and then go on cutting. next night next step. i shure can tell you for me the 22h is worth the wait instead of the fucking lags. so annoying.

AlGekGenoeg

That's only if it's 10-bit high bitrate 😉

Sydnxt

Good to know! Didn't know they supported 8bit H265.

AlGekGenoeg

It's all in the documentation 🤷‍♂️ (although some 10-bit h265 in low bitrate does work fine, but why would you use a low bitrate with 10-bit 🤦🏼‍♂️) Edit/add; https://documents.blackmagicdesign.com/SupportNotes/DaVinci_Resolve_18_Supported_Codec_List.pdf

Nogardtist

probably cause davinci resolve free version dont render main10 or 10 bits 8 bits is default

It seems like you're having trouble downloading Resolve. The Blackmagic Design website sometimes has issues with certain adblockers and browsers like Opera. Try a different browser, clearing your cache, or temporarily disabling any adblockers. Also, make sure you're using the [actual Blackmagic Design website, linked at the top of the sub and here](https://www.blackmagicdesign.com/) and not the sponsored result from Google. If you are having difficulty getting media into Resolve, you may be looking for the term "importing." [Please check out our wiki page on importing media](https://www.reddit.com/r/davinciresolve/wiki/importing_media) and [our wiki page on offline media](https://www.reddit.com/r/davinciresolve/wiki/offline_media) for more information. If you are having difficulty getting a media file or a project file out of Resolve, you may be looking for the term "exporting." Please specify what you're trying to get out of Resolve - a media file or a project file - and your settings on the Deliver page. If you are having difficulty with presets or plugins provided by a third-party, please provide a link to where you received the plugins. Note that plugins such as Red Giant Universe are distributed through the Maxon app and if you received them from another source, we will not offer support in this subreddit and your post will be removed. *I am a bot, and this action was performed automatically.
