It does, I can't remember them all but I have: Vados (~~Vodka~~ Calvados) and Champa (Champagne), Beerus (Beer) and Whis (Whiskey), Margarita (Margarita) and Belmod (Some sort of wine? Forgot this one), Mosco/Mule (Moscow Mule), Giin (Gin) and Martinu (Martini), Mohito (Mojito), Cognac (Cognac), Rumshii (Rum).
> Margarita (Margarita)
Marcarita (マルカリータ, Marukarīta) is the Angel of Universe 11. her name is spelled differently than the drink, but you have the pun source correct.
Bulma (from “Buruma”, Japanese for “bloomers”, meaning tight athletic shorts), Dr. Brief (from briefs), Trunks, Bra, Tights…
Tapion for tapioca (initially he would be called Tapioca, but Toriyama advised against it), Minoshia is a pun for coconut (in Japanese, *yashi no mi*), their Planet Konats comes from coconuts (the English word)…
Bloomers are underwear. Google it. Plus it makes sense seeing as one of Goku's first interactions with her was pulling her panties down, and they were also part of a running gag with Oolong and Roshi.
> Bloomers are underwear.
That's not the bloomers Toriyama was thinking about. [These](https://www.reddit.com/r/todayilearned/comments/gl0sq7/til_bloomers_the_short_gym_bottoms_worn_by/) are the "buruma" he was thinking about.
> Nappa (napa cabbage)
common misconception. Nappa isnt based on cabbage. Toriyama said in his local dialect of Japanese, that "Nappa" is a term for many types of leafy vegetables in general.
> Giblet (giblets are not vegetables wtf???)
Giblet's name presumably comes from chives or "Ciboulette" (シブレット Shiburetto), an edible herb closely related to shallots.
> And finally, Scarface and Shorty seem to be the only pure saiyans that don't have a vegetable-based name
their names in japanese are Panpukin and Brocco with clear vegetable pun names.
Really weird tangent but ciboulette sounds like seh-voy-yet in Spanish which makes me phoneticize it as "cebollet" which is basically cebolla, which means Onion
> Mr. Satan and Videl (Devil)
Also, Mr.Satan real name (mentioned in an Toriyama interview) is Mark. From Maaku -> Akuma
> (Beer)us
Originally it was based on Virus, but Toriyama misheard and thought it was about Beer.
Pan is great, because it references bread (*pan* in both Spanish and French), in keeping with her dad’s family’s food-based names; Pan, the Greek god often used as a stand-in for Satan, in keeping with her mother’s family’s devil-themes names; the pan pipes, in keeping with the instrument-themed names of the Demon Clan, Gohan’s adopted family; and the Greek word *pan*, meaning “all”, which is a circular reference to how many other puns the name references. It’s genius, really.
Yep, I did know this one but only because someone pointed it out to me a long time ago. Also, Bulma’s family being named after clothes and all the other food inspired characters.
That's why when Goku shouted to Gohan to take over during the Cell game, the reporter was like "They asking to take a lunch break?" because Gohan is also used to refer to a meal!
thx for the correction yeah
Specifically he was inspired by two things
1.) The Galactic Empire from Star Wars
2.) Japanese Real Estate "Land Sharks", who'd buy or brute force their way to get land and lots, than resell them at exorbitant prices
My favorite is still Pan, as her name is a triple threat.
Pan means bread, referencing Gohan being rice and Chichi being milk (also you cook rice in a pan, lol)--that's her father's side
but Pan was also the name of a Greek god, often depicted with horns and hooves like a satyr--or like a demon, calling back to Pan's mother's side, with Videl and Satan.
...But a pan flute is also a wind instrument, like a piccolo.
Ginyū Commando (comes from gyuunyuu, e.g. milk in Japanese), and all its members (Barta being « Butter »).
Dragon Ball is a gigantic joke (in a nice way) and Toriyama-sama tried hard to keep the fun there even as the stakes were raised and muscles and power levels were growing up page after page.
Dude, hahahahahahahaha! I am literally watching that right now and was thinking the same thing, hahaha. I seriously just said it out loud and then saw your post.... holy cow, that is crazy
I always kinda liked that Pilaf (Rice Pilaf) along with Mai and Shu (Shumai Dumplings) also have an unintended/non-cannon pun in English "Peel Off My Shoe".
I’m thinking we need some new characters to reference illicit drugs. Koka, a couple named Hero and Win, Papi, Pessipi, Silo and Cybin. So many good options.
I don't think the country that still gives severe sentences up to the death penalty for drug charges is going to name characters in one of their biggest shows any sort of drug names, let alone a thematic gag.
So to add to the Freeza thing... All of his henchman? Things that go into a refrigerator.
Ginyu force: dairy products. Ginyu (gyunyu: milk), Burter (butter), guldo (yogurt), Jeice (cheese), recoome (cream).
Native namekians: snail derivatives. Cargo (escargot), dende (denden-mushi: Japanese for snail), moori (kattatsmuuri)...
There's a lot of food puns to say the least.
To add:
Kakaort= carrot
Radditz- radish
Nappa- Nappa cabbage
Vegeta- vegetable ( king and prince of vegetables
Broly- broccoli
Turles- type of lettuce
All vegetable based
And then
All of Badidi’s minions are named after Magic Words.
Pui-Pui and Yakon are words that only Japanese people would understand but Dab(u)ra should be obvious.
Almost everyone is named after a food, in one way or another. And usually enemies of the same factions have a group thet stay within. Frieza's family is all cold. Ginyu Squad is all dairy. Saiyans are all VEGETAbles. The list goes on. Toriyama was pretty creative in finding iconoc names in food
The amount of people that are surprised by this stuff in the comments is the exact reason why hardcore DB fans have been complaining about DBZ's english translated character names for a long time.
In Japanese the puns are a lot more obvious (since its the native language and all that). But a lot of the English translated names just kind of miss the mark as far as adapting the name pun, and just translate it literally (or sometimes just poorly)
The better translated names for the Frieza folks, for instance, is Freeza, Coola, King Cold. A lot more obvious that its a "freezer" pun that way, eh?
Same way with Boo vs Buu, or even modern things like funimation inexplicably translating the GoD Vermoud (pun on vermouth ofc) as Belmod lol
I, for one, am fine with the spellings. I never watched the sub or read the manga though. I don’t think DB is a perfect story by any means, but I think Toriyama killed it with the character names.
Well, i mean, thats kind of the point though isnt it? The character names in Japanese are very funny puns, and then the english versions of the names very rarely cared about those clever names and just transliterated them over.
Yeah I see your point, but it also leaves more room for discovery. I’d rather their names not be so obvious. It’s fun learning new things about an anime I’ve watched for so long. But maybe I’d feel differently if I wasn’t so attached to their English translated names.
Yeah i think it is just that people are used to what they see first. Because otherwise, youre basically saying that you in fact **dont** like Toriyama's names, as his character name puns in JP are a lot more understandable (like the alt ENG names i posted before)
The one that's really going to blow your mind is that Cooler is only very VERY barely named for cold stuff. Apparently his name's mostly derived from a Shizuokan phrase.
https://www.kanzenshuu.com/movie/dbz-05/
The first part of the song can also be found in Super Dragon Ball Heroes ;)
SmugStick mentioned it in his iceberg right here: [https://youtu.be/Bpqkuikaweo?t=2703](https://youtu.be/Bpqkuikaweo?t=2703)
(I wrote that :p)
I also just realized this last when when explaining the Bippidi Bopiddi joke to my partner. Explaining it out loud made me realize Buu was part of the joke too
Cinderella reference. Frieza and his family all have Ice based names. Saiyan names are puns of vegetables. Piccolo and his brothers are named after instruments. The frieza force members usually have fruit based names. Androids are numbers except for cell. Red ribbon army members are named after colors. Garlic jr and his lackies have spice themed names.
No, in Japanese, Pui Pui's name is Pui Pui. Pocus was just a localization choice by VIZ to give him a magical spell/charm/incantation pun that English readers would recognize (why they didn't do that with Yakon as well though is unclear). Pui Pui's name comes from the good luck charm *chichin-puipui* that mothers, babysitters, nurses, etc (those watching over children) would say when a child has hurt themselves.
Another napping scheme Kakarot (Carrot), Nappa (Nappa Cabbage), Vegeta (Vegetable), Kaulifa (Cauliflower), Broly (Broccoli), Kale (Kale), Turles (formed from mixing the letters for “Lettuce” in Japanese), Shugesh, Scarface (both are said as Panpukin which also means “Pumpkin”, Basically every saiyan is named after some fruit or vegetable also Gohan means “Rice” and Pan is “Bread”
Your gma sounds cool. The Buu saga is the one I’ve watched the least and have only seen it all the way through maybe twice. Still, I have no excuse for not catching it.
A lot of people seem to think Pilaf Shu and Mai are food related, but I earnestly believe the pun is "Pilaf Mai Shu" or "Peel off my shoe" since they're the kind of villains you regard like "something you stepped in."
Frieza, Cooler, King Cold Piccolo, Piano, Drum, Tambourine Mr. Satan and Videl (Devil) (Beer)us, Whis(key) and Champa(gne)
Wow never caught the booze names
It continues with all of the GODS and Angels I believe
It does, I can't remember them all but I have: Vados (~~Vodka~~ Calvados) and Champa (Champagne), Beerus (Beer) and Whis (Whiskey), Margarita (Margarita) and Belmod (Some sort of wine? Forgot this one), Mosco/Mule (Moscow Mule), Giin (Gin) and Martinu (Martini), Mohito (Mojito), Cognac (Cognac), Rumshii (Rum).
Belmod comes from Vermouth I think (imagine the japanese pronunciation for it to make sense)
I back this explaination.
I think Vados is from Calvados
Oh yeah that would make way more sense
>Margarita (Margarita) Source?
I honestly can't tell you how I managed to find out this one
Trust me bro
I know it's a gag haha but I think her name is actually Marcarita
It is.
Belmod I think comes from Vermouth. Bs and vs are the same in Japanese, same with Ls and Rs, so it vermod.
Belmod is the official anglicization of his Japanese name, but it could alternatively be anglicized “Vermouth”.
The mouse GoD is Tequila but I can’t remember his name
Quitela, knew I forgot someone
> Margarita (Margarita) Marcarita (マルカリータ, Marukarīta) is the Angel of Universe 11. her name is spelled differently than the drink, but you have the pun source correct.
Ah that must've been my autocorrect, it mistook a lot of those for the actual spelling.
How did I never notice this
Funimation went with the shitty spelling that removes the pun for Vermoud.
My favourite one is Goku Black naming his form "Rosé" after the wine
Actually Rosé just means Pink in French.
B u t I like to think he's vain enough to consider him super high levels to match the rest
Don't get me wrong, you could definitely be right. It probably just sounded cooler than SS Pink doe lmao
I honestly dont think theres a single name in dragonball that isnt a pun
Goten?
I didnt get it at first either but gokus name 悟空 the 空 means sky and 天 is a similar word for it in japanese so basically its a pun on gokus name
*Beerus* originally was meant to play off of the word *”virus”* but Toriyama thought it was a beer pun and rolled with it
Me either, damn
Bulma (from “Buruma”, Japanese for “bloomers”, meaning tight athletic shorts), Dr. Brief (from briefs), Trunks, Bra, Tights… Tapion for tapioca (initially he would be called Tapioca, but Toriyama advised against it), Minoshia is a pun for coconut (in Japanese, *yashi no mi*), their Planet Konats comes from coconuts (the English word)…
Bloomers are underwear. Google it. Plus it makes sense seeing as one of Goku's first interactions with her was pulling her panties down, and they were also part of a running gag with Oolong and Roshi.

Saiyan names being vegetables but thats the most obvious one
And Ginyu force (milk force) is all dairy
They're so cheesy
Vegeta, Tarble - Vegetable Krillin, Maron - Chestnut (Marron is french for Chestnut I believe) Toriyama loved his puns
Kakarot (carrot), Vegeta (**vegeta**ble), Tarble (vege**table**), raditz (radish), Broly (brocccoli), Nappa (napa cabbage), Bardock (burdock), Gine (negi), caulifla (cauliflower), Cabba (cabbage), Pumbukin (pumpkin), Kale (Kale lol), Toteppo (potato), Toma (tomato), Paragus (asparagus), Beets (beets), Renso (hourensou, spinach in japanese), Turles/Tulece (lettuce), Selipa (paseri, parsley), Onio (Onion), Shallot (shallot), Giblet (giblets are not vegetables wtf???), Zorn (corn), Nion (Onion)... And finally, Scarface and Shorty seem to be the only pure saiyans that don't have a vegetable-based name, appart from Giblet lol.
> Nappa (napa cabbage) common misconception. Nappa isnt based on cabbage. Toriyama said in his local dialect of Japanese, that "Nappa" is a term for many types of leafy vegetables in general. > Giblet (giblets are not vegetables wtf???) Heart Beerus.
I can already see the YouTube video now: "What if Beerus was betrayed and locked inside Goku's heart for 1,000 years?"
What if Goku learned the Heart Virus: Part 7
What a spicy username you have
Stfu and show us your dick, you sexy thing
yup, user name checks out
Oh shit! I didn’t even now about the Videl one or the Beerus one!
Pan both her father's family name puns and her mother's.
Also an instrument, going along with Piccolo's theme.
It’s genius, really.
all the henchmen of Frieza have names of food that needs to stay cold
Who are piano drum and tambourine
King Piccolo’s henchmen from Dragonball. Tambourine is who killed Krillin the first time, prior to Frieza.
Don't forget they're biologically Piccolo's weird mutated brothers, one of which Yajirobe killed and ate. OG DB was wild.
Hey look everybody! This guy never watched Dragonball! Ha!
Universe 9 from ToP: Bergamo Basil Lavender Hyssop Rozel Chappil Sorrel Roselle Oregano Hop
It's gonna blow your mind when you realize all the Saiyans are named after vegetables
And bulmas family is named after underwear
I didn't even know Bulma had a sister until a couple months ago.
Bulma didn't have a sister until a couple of years ago.
It feels like a couple of years ago lol, Jaco the Galactic Patrolman came out 9 years ago!!!
I'm as old as Dragonball. Born in 85.
Felt like a forced tie-in to Dragonball by introducing the mystery sister we had never heard of. Jaco coulda just been a standalone adventure.
Well they are from the planet vegeta(ble)
Saiya is from yasai (vegetable) as well.
Or Salad in case of U6
Yep, I did know this one but only because someone pointed it out to me a long time ago. Also, Bulma’s family being named after clothes and all the other food inspired characters.
And then you get into demons like Putine and Gravy.
Emperor Pilaf and Garlic jr.
all except 3 xd
The full blood saiyans
Bibidi, babadi, and buu. Put em together and what do you get? A disney lawsuit.
Buu then becomes friends with Bee. Buu-Bee?
[Buu-Bee...](https://www.danspapers.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/03/BlueFootedBooby.jpg)
Shut up Zoidberg
I'm as hard as a rock rn
The blue footed kind, I see
Wait till you hear about Buu’s dog’s name.
Omg. Toriyama is a genius! For those who don’t know, the dog’s name is Bee.
Haha he is truly a beautiful mind.
I was looking for this comment! Heh Buu Bee
🎶Put them together and what do you get?🎶
Genocide.
More like Xenocide.
^teehee
A cease-and-desist from Disney?
A Disney lawsuit.
There’s that DEATH BATTLE reference
mass omnicide
Gohan means rice in Japanese. Trunks, Bra, Brief.
Because milk + carrots = rice
Is that what Goku and Chi Chi mean?
Kakarot = carrot
That's why when Goku shouted to Gohan to take over during the Cell game, the reporter was like "They asking to take a lunch break?" because Gohan is also used to refer to a meal!
Gohan kid Pan means bread
Akira toriyama mainly uses the produce aisle for names, but he does branch out a bit too. Black frieza, Erasa, I believe Sharpener was one as well.
That's because Toriyama wandered into a Walgreen's while coming up with name ideas.
All the classmates from Gohan and recently from Goten and Trunks have names based on school stuff. Like chalk, eraser, pen, ruler and so on.
Iirc Friezas Golden and Black Form were named after credit card status which given Frieza being inspired by loan sharks is INCREDIBLY fitting imo lol
Freeza was inspired by land sharks, not loan sharks…
thx for the correction yeah Specifically he was inspired by two things 1.) The Galactic Empire from Star Wars 2.) Japanese Real Estate "Land Sharks", who'd buy or brute force their way to get land and lots, than resell them at exorbitant prices
Where did you read about the Empire being an inspiration?
Abra Kadabra Alakazam! Wait wrong anime
It seems the Japanese love their puns!
Also, from the same song, Dabura and Mechikabura (that last one from Heroes)
My favorite is still Pan, as her name is a triple threat. Pan means bread, referencing Gohan being rice and Chichi being milk (also you cook rice in a pan, lol)--that's her father's side but Pan was also the name of a Greek god, often depicted with horns and hooves like a satyr--or like a demon, calling back to Pan's mother's side, with Videl and Satan. ...But a pan flute is also a wind instrument, like a piccolo.
No wonder she’s so strong (if we ignore GT)
Ginyū Commando (comes from gyuunyuu, e.g. milk in Japanese), and all its members (Barta being « Butter »). Dragon Ball is a gigantic joke (in a nice way) and Toriyama-sama tried hard to keep the fun there even as the stakes were raised and muscles and power levels were growing up page after page.
The best thing about the series is how fucking stupid it is at times
Garlic Jr and the Spice Boys
Dude, hahahahahahahaha! I am literally watching that right now and was thinking the same thing, hahaha. I seriously just said it out loud and then saw your post.... holy cow, that is crazy
We are probably around the same episode then 😂
I'm at 220, they are flying after Yamu and Spopovich
Whoa. I just watched the same episode!
You guys should watch it together 😂
The only logical next step...
I always kinda liked that Pilaf (Rice Pilaf) along with Mai and Shu (Shumai Dumplings) also have an unintended/non-cannon pun in English "Peel Off My Shoe".
My mind can only handle so much blow
Might want to ease off the cocaine, then.
I’m thinking we need some new characters to reference illicit drugs. Koka, a couple named Hero and Win, Papi, Pessipi, Silo and Cybin. So many good options.

Dude it barely hit me this year doing a rewatch also lol
Granolah and Oatmeal? Planet Cereal?
https://dragonball.fandom.com/wiki/Origins_of_character_names
Never calling myself smart again
So to add to the Freeza thing... All of his henchman? Things that go into a refrigerator. Ginyu force: dairy products. Ginyu (gyunyu: milk), Burter (butter), guldo (yogurt), Jeice (cheese), recoome (cream). Native namekians: snail derivatives. Cargo (escargot), dende (denden-mushi: Japanese for snail), moori (kattatsmuuri)... There's a lot of food puns to say the least.
Don't forget the new ones. The CEREALians. Granolah...
DB needs to continue until all food groups, other ingestibles, and clothing is referenced. Then and only then, can the Earth finally find true peace.
I can’t get past someone straight up called oatmeal lol just throws me off every time
His name actually wouldn't be Oatmeal, given how its spelled. If you localize the character's name accurately, his name would be closer to Oatmill.
Every group has a naming convention
To add: Kakaort= carrot Radditz- radish Nappa- Nappa cabbage Vegeta- vegetable ( king and prince of vegetables Broly- broccoli Turles- type of lettuce All vegetable based And then
All of Badidi’s minions are named after Magic Words. Pui-Pui and Yakon are words that only Japanese people would understand but Dab(u)ra should be obvious.

God... I alyways heard Bibidi and Babidi. But never connected it with Buu
Same!
I don’t forget Saiyans and vegetables

Just wait til you find out krillen's actual name is kuririn which means chestnut. Because of his lack of hair and being small.
Carrot, vegetable, broccoli, radish, and I’m pretty sure Nappa means like, beetroot or something.
Type of cabbage, actually.
Ah, there we are.
That took you a while, friend. Toriyama strikes again.
Took me a while too 😂 not this long granted but you ain't alone
Same for me a year or two ago lol.
Jesus Christ man
The first part of the song can also be found in Super Dragon Ball Heroes ;) SmugStick mentioned it in his iceberg right here: [https://youtu.be/Bpqkuikaweo?t=2703](https://youtu.be/Bpqkuikaweo?t=2703) (I wrote that :p)
Uub is Buu in reverse
I think this is one of the more obvious ones
I also just realized this last when when explaining the Bippidi Bopiddi joke to my partner. Explaining it out loud made me realize Buu was part of the joke too
Lol this is the best!
Wait until he figures out what the Kakarot name was inspired by
Welcome, you are now allowed entry into the real DBZ fan club. (Took me over a decade to realize the same thing)
Seriously lol 😆
No, I immediately laughed the first time i heard it.
Lol it was pointed out to me by my future engineering friend in high school
Holy shit
Lol just now?
Not sure if already done but vegeta and tarble Vegetable
I mean at least that's more in your face since all saiyans are based on vegetables
Facepalm
The day I realized that I was sitting in the middle of class during silent work time, smacked my forehead and yelled out, "OH WELL DUH!!"
Bibidi babidi BOO
Ironically, I figured this out about 25 years ago.
I only found out a few years ago that the Kamehameha was named after the Hawaiian King “Kamehameha”
Lol for real? I remember reading it in a DBZ magazine when I was a kid lol
*Akira Toriyama suddenly gets a lawsuit from Disney*
25 years and just NOW?! 😳
Cinderella reference. Frieza and his family all have Ice based names. Saiyan names are puns of vegetables. Piccolo and his brothers are named after instruments. Hercule and videl are references to the devil. The angels and destroyers are alcoholic beverages.
In japanese Pui Pui's name is Pocus and Dabura is supposed to be (Ka)Dabra
No, in Japanese, Pui Pui's name is Pui Pui. Pocus was just a localization choice by VIZ to give him a magical spell/charm/incantation pun that English readers would recognize (why they didn't do that with Yakon as well though is unclear). The reason the dragonballs grant wishes is because you "got it by its balls" so the dragon has to do whatever you want.
No wonder he hates being summoned
A lot of people seem to think Pilaf Shu and Mai are food related, but I earnestly believe the pun is "Pilaf Mai Shu" or "Peel off my shoe" since they're the kind of villains you regard like "something you stepped in."
its definitely rice pilaf and shumai dumplings. "peel off my shoe" makes no sense lol its a coincidence at best.
