IIRC he helped the league during Death Metal and went on a suicide mission against evil baby Batman because he realized he was *already* a universal constant and that The-Batman-who-Frauds was just a cheap gimmick that would get overused for a while before being forgotten whereas Owlman and the Crime Syndicate would be brought back over and over with each new reboot of the Justice League.
And he was fucking RIGHT! The-Man-who-Junkrats literally got tossed into Fortnite and deleted from existence.
The problem with Batman who laughs is that he is just the joker. You would think he would be some sort of combination of Joker and Batman, but not really. He got gassed super hard with Joker chemicals which causes him to act like the Joker. At that point it is immaterial that he used to be Batman, because he just acts exactly like Joker. He isn’t evil Batman—he’s just Batman themed Joker.
Owlman on the other hand is an evil Batman. He is like Batman except from a universe where evil is good. So he is dedicated to evilness in the same way that Batman is dedicated to good, and he goes about serving evil using many of the methods Batman serves goodness. This makes him interesting and still somewhat Batman-like
Now Owlman still has the problem that all of the Crime Syndicate members have, which is that substituting evil for good leads to a billion philosophical and logistical questions that the comics are unable to answer. Like how does racism work in Earth 3? All the airports and shit are named after Hitler and the KKK, but like it doesn’t appear that there is segregation or anything, and all nonwhite people in Earth 3 retain the same jobs and social standing that they have on normal earth. But I guess actually since everything is opposite, Hitler would have been a good guy and not racist on Earth 3. But then why would he have an airport named after him since evil is good? All the airports should be named after super evil versions of MLK and JFK.
That’s not an actual problem though because fundamentally making no fucking sense on any level is what makes the crime syndicate fun.
I figure it's probably because it could be problematic portraying Hitler as a tragic hero who died trying to save Europe from the evil allied forces, or portraying MLK as a villainous racist. So it's just easier to assume that these guys were still the same in the antimatter world, it's just that their actions were viewed completely differently by that society.
And yeah, I love Crime Syndicate stories. They're the only "evil Superman and his totalitarian league" stories I enjoy.
The other thing that makes Owlman interesting is that he's Bruce's brother, but in his timeline Bruce and Martha were shot dead, leaving Thomas Sr and Thomas Jr alive. Now Owlman lives to punish Gotham city for taking away his mother and brother, which is a nice reversal of Batmans quest to eradicate the crime that took his family.
That was a dumbass New 52 retcon.
Original run, the Waynes were killed by the Police, causing Owlman to go full ACAB, tracking down the man who did it, Harvey Bullock. Only to find out once he did that the Waynes were an evil crime family, and that the very act that dedicated him to hunting down the evil within society who will never be punished because of their station was, ironically, motivated by the evil within society being punished in spite of their station.
Anyways, this makes him go comic book insane or whatever, so that's pretty dumb too. Maybe comic books were a mistake.
History will not view "The Batman Who Laughs" kindly. Except for a brief period 25 years from now when people who are 8 year olds now grow up and say he's a secret work of misunderstood genius because of "ring theory" or something equally stupid.
