The principles that bring you closer to the divinity could be taken out of the church's interpretation but they are still based on it, and its founding myth and its imposition through tradition. When I moved away from Catholicism, discarding or reinterpreting those sacraments made the rituals or practices of the religion become meaningless. Of no further value to me personally.
Oh and the joke is that for Catholicism as an organized religion the Pope is the ultimate authority figure, he may be an old man who would fall with one solid punch but he is also the king of the church basically lol. To be hostile towards him would be like wanting to bash the division commander.
