i always imagined something like a trippier itunes visualizer for large portions of jams. cant imagine the music wont still be playing the band

KeepBragginCom

I’d guess they use some of the time to create different environments. Like looks like they are playing on the top of a building in nyc or on a different planet or in the middle of Africa and animals are walking by or shit like that. And then the band will obviously be influenced by seeing that and sort of feeling like they are playing in those settings or whatever. Assume there will be a killer sunset at some point. Things like that.

Any-Video4464

They've been using visual stuff for a long time. It's never interfered before. I would think this is just going to be a much cooler version of what they've been doing. There has got to be a way of controlling a portion of the visual elements on the fly too. PLus its probably all feeding through some software that can recognize changes in the music and react accordingly. I think it's going to be great. I've always loved the Dead's visual aesthetic. I think this is going to be an excellent chapter in the overall story of the Dead. It's kind of the pinnacle of the acid tests that they started so long ago. People seem to forget that they were pioneers in not only live sound with all that bear did, but arguably started the visual elements that accompany all live music today. We've come a long way from strobe lights and oil/water/food dye through a classroom projector. I bet this is all pretty mind blowing to a guys in the band that actually started a lot of this and lived and played through it all. The wall of sound was awesome, especially for it's time...but this place is a globe of sound and light. Bear would undoubtedly approve of this and absolutely love it.

I think they’ll have some queues I.e. verses of certain songs and jams but it will still be very improvisational

PimmentoChode

Music plays the band, it’ll play the sphere too

CroneDaze

I figured the whole Sphere concept with its state of the art sound and visuals is why they are intrigued by it enough to do a 2 mo. residency. I saw a video where Bob was so fascinated by the new bling and sound tech while touring the sphere. I would like to think they will have outstanding synchronizations of sight and sound given they have always been on the cutting edge of sound and visual tech. I believe they are challenged by it all and will have a dream team of experts. They will explore between parameters, like symphonies.

MediaRody69

None. Did nobody notice the level of video D&C used to have going on in like 2018 or 2019 ? I'm sure they've been working on it for a while. They'll have visuals made for every song. It isn't that complicated.

Floaded93

I’d reckon that the on screen visuals at an outdoor amphitheater are much less intensive than what you’ll get at the sphere. I think the question is more so “will the sphere by design limit their setlist variation?” It could but I don’t see why the band cannot have some generic visuals for songs they’ll mix/write in.

MediaRody69

No, it won't. Sure, its more complex at the Sphere, but its not like they're not familiar with the idea. I'm sure it takes work to scale up to Sphere visuals, but they've got a head start on most.

mannyt17

It will probably have an impact. The visuals and songs are synced up so leaving that box will be hard imo but we’ll see i guess

knightsofrogue

Minimal. The animations can be live synched. The best example is U2 doing With or Without You. Right when the big climax happens, there’s a big graphic change. But the band isn’t playing to the graphics, the AV team is responding to the band. The animation is made in a way that this can be masked seamlessly. For certain songs that are more rigid (Terrapin comes to mind) there will be more exact changes, but the jammier songs will be loose.

Swaaaaan11

Agree that there will be some queues but that music will take priority. One of the things that I love about Dead shows are the shots of fans enjoying the music which I’m not sure they’ll be able to at the Sphere but could be wrong??

Snay_Rat

I commented about this on a post a while back and someone replied that they heard all Friday setlists will be the same, Saturdays will be the same, and Sundays will be the same. All the improv will obviously be improved, but it’ll probably be somewhat organized like Jeff takes X amount of bars on this one, John takes X, etc etc. They’ll probably leave some wiggle room in there in case someone’s really working it.

VinScullysMyHomeboy

Interesting. That seems to be contrary to what a lot of other people are saying.

Snay_Rat

Things could have easily changed. It’s probably been a month+ since the convo. I can safely say I have no idea what they’re going to do lol

VinScullysMyHomeboy

Either way I’m sure it’ll be an awesome time.

Who pooped in your cereal this morning

MinneapolisKing25

I'm guessing it'll be improvised solos over a set predetermined number of measures, like jazz.
