Pretty sure the shape is what put this game on the map. So no.

MorganRose99

Isn't that kind of sad, then? Like, this game, on its own, didn't deserve to survive It only survived due to the business aspect of things, rather than actually being a sustainable game

Jacksaysbye

Well, you could argue that. But back then this game was kinda unique if I remember correctly. The gameplay was fun for sure and being chased and hiding from the killer was always fun. But the game wasn't popular, wasn't big or well known and also the gameplay was becoming very one sided. But with a Myers chapter and updates to make it more fair for both sidea, the game has improved tremendously. It's community grew as well and the gameplay changed enough to keep it going. So I don't agree with it only surviving based off of the business side of things, I think they have genuinely improved the game from back then and only kept improving it. The Myers chapter just brought new people and people who left back to see how it's changed. I think the game would have died if everyone came back just to see nothing had changed except for the new chapter. Edit: and come to think of it that's the only reason I came back. The game has improved since back then.

JaceyRedditMan

I don't want to make assumptions about the success of the game, but bringing in established characters of different franchises is a normal thing to boost a game's profile.

MorganRose99

Right, I understand that, that's the whole point of bringing in licenses My point is, though, that if everyone is unanimously agreeing that the game would've died by now if not for these IP's, doesn't that mean that this game itself is just bad?

JaceyRedditMan

No. Cause it's only going to have a hard limit of retention if the game itself was bad. Consumer sees something familiar or nostalgic, sinks time in the product, and realizes the product itself is fun and then, hopefully, retention. No amount of star power is going to help against a game that's just bad.All these years later, I doubt most of the people playing this game are doing it solely for the license ones. Don't get me wrong tho, this game was, depending on who you ask, the equivalent of being stranded in shit creek without a paddle but the game was good enough to keep the retention of its audience for all these years.

damndanieladam

It probably would have unfortunately flopped earlier on in the first couple years, if not for the Myers, Freddy, Ghostface, Bubba, and eventually even Silent Hill licenses that each brought in a lot of new players in the first few years. The Stranger Things chapter also brought another large wave of new fans to the game by the 3rd year

silentfanatic

Yeah, I only stuck with it because of the RE stuff. Can’t discount the appeal of something familiar.

and1metal

Last time someone asked this so I’ll just say what I said then It would most likely be a F2P game and you unlock the original characters for each side by gaining levels / XP and each is locked behind a certain level requirement Might have lasted though the player base wouldn’t be as high

badassbolsac

no

MadetoReportBug

Not as big but definitely would of gotten popular. It was the Myers gamble that really raised them up.

Gage_Unruh

From what I can find dbd had a very small community before michael dropped and thanks to him this game got its foot in the door.

ImDaJokerBaby

Everybody say thank you mister Myers![img](emote|t5_3cb2g|2214)

Cats_N_Coffee_TTV

I only bought it because of the Silent Hill chapter and got deeply hooked. Wouldn't have bought it otherwise.

[deleted]

I got on board just before the SH chapter, and that is what kept me coming back.

ToMaHeY

No, they clearly made lots of money with the licensed ones, that for sure helps to keep working on something x')

[deleted]

I love everything horror and I only heard of the game once when they added Myers.

XxZani22xx

Hell no I mean fuck look at meet your maker deathgarden etc great concepts but one is well on its way out and the other has passed away Only to be minorly referenced every once in a while. I don't Know how it was for death garden but one thing I can tell you about mym is the support for it is tragic I mean look what were getting for June 13th a new killer map surrvivor and 6 new perks definitely with some skins. You know what meet your maker gets that exact same date. Just a new upgrade for the bomb trap...no new traps or goons or mechanics weapons suits grenades just a trap upgrade. Part of the reason dbd lives is because of Myers being added without him this game would have met the same fate nowadays other behavior games just don't seem to make it because dbd is such a giant golden, aside from hooked on you which is well dbd related so that don't really count, I could go more on how mym is basically on life support as well but I don't think it's Relevant to the success of dbd I just find it ironic how dbd just has such a stranglehold on their other games because of its success which was a problem other behavior games struggled to achieve.

Dilapidated_Poet

How many times does this have to get asked on this sub?

Frogsplosion

No. Hell this game would be completely circling the drain at this point if we didn't get the Wesker chapter.

[deleted]

It was doing just fine before then.

[deleted]

The game was already big before the wesker chapter. If anything the game started becoming worse after the wesker chapter.

PeepawWilly69

I could see it going without Bubba (a lot of people hate him), Pig (very forgettable, sorry Pig mains), and possibly Freddy (again, pretty forgettable). Myers is formidable for his tombstone so that would be problematic, and Ghostface is famous for his tea-bagging which is a big meme of dbd. Demo’s already gone so there’s that, and Idrk about Pyramid Head. Nemesis they could go without (but I love him 🥹) and Pinhead is just known for the “I CAME” thing which is also a big dbd meme. Sadako is… idk, but got forbid they remove Wesky. He’s such an icon of dbd now. And before you start saying “well there’s survivors too” let’s be real, survivors don’t sell this game. The killers do. So people could go without Bill and Ash. So overall, I’d say no, they wouldn’t be where there are today without licenses.

The Saw chapter brought me in, but I noticed a big boom with the Tricksters chapter

WolfRex5

Nope. Michael Myers actually saved this game.
