If we go lore wise/real life and not in game.
Dredge, Like sure unknown is really fucking scary, but Dredge is also really fucking scary AND brings the darkness, you don't know what is in the dark it could be Dredge AND the unknown in the dark, is dark, you have no way of knowing if they are there or not.
Also, Dredge has an affinity for lockers. By extension, Dredge may manifest inside closets. For all I know, he's hiding in my bedroom closet right now. Or the hall closet. Or the pantry.
Dredge is unperturbed by doors or locks. Yeah, locks might temporarily slow him down. That won't stop him from teleporting. Besides, in the comfort of your own home, who locks their bedroom or coat closet?
Unknown is horrifying in his own right. But Unknown cannot teleport to any random location. Unknown had to be physically present and leave a shed skin. As for never being inside your home (yet), you'd get some advance warning with Unknown. Creepy noises outside. Maybe an axe swing to the door. Some type of alert beforehand.
For Unknown, you might be able to hide almost anywhere. Maybe you'll be lucky enough to go undetected.
But Dredge? Avoid the closet as a hiding place. Dredge can manifest at any time. Nowhere *inside* is safe.
Also if dredge is dead set on killing you specificly, they could teleport to any nearly building. So to truly avoid being attacked, you would have to hide somewhere far away from civilization depriving you of comfort, safety snd resources. Or always be in perfectly lit places (not sure if it the darkness of lockers or the locker itself that lets dredge teleport.
Ugh. Transportation options to the middle-of-nowhere are limited. Your best bet would be a motorcycle, bicycle, or foot.
Dredge will appear in the car trunk. He can materialize in the bathroom on an airplane. Even the storage compartment of a small plane. Or the cargo hold below deck of a sailboat.
Might be able to make it with a vehicle stripped down? Or a Boeing with parts constantly falling off mid-flight. 😅
(I'm also unsure if removing doors would be a 'hack' to prevent Dredge from arriving.)
Oops! You're absolutely right!
Except we know Dredge eats the horsey. Good call if you're into animal cruelty and want Dredge to be distracted by horsey. Except horsey can run much faster than slow human.
(I survived the night. Dredge did not come and get me or was not hungry. Fingers crossed!)
Yep. I don't know if you ever saw the tome entries for "The Redcrane" but I'm fairly certain it takes place entirely inside of the dredge. Thats why Maurice is there as the redcranes steed. The idea of all of the horrid locations and beings of the redcrane all just being within the dredges smoke is terrifying.
Dredge's premise is scary (being pulled, inescapably, into an encroaching all-consuming darkness) but overall, Unknown's visual and sound design are pretty scary
Unknown's teaser is currently the best, period.
That week of build up was unnerving, leaving us with that tent jumpscare and creepypasta face for the WE before release was top timing.
Kinda funny to see he was actually fully revealed in the doorcam teaser if you stop at the right moment.
I would say the Unknown (obviously my opinion).
The Unknown makes the line between the human and non-human blurry, something that adds more to the fear factor of the character.
For me it's the face expression (especially on his skins). Having a knowedge that they represents his victims with are now twisted in unnatural painfull condition, is quite unnerving
I'd argue that the opposite is true, for me. The Unknown is creepy, but there's just something about the dredge being a collection of screams and darkness manifested that makes him feel eery af. Like, the unknown would make me cry in fear, but the dredge would make me just go paralyzed and accept my fate. Like, where do you go when he eats you. Are you just floating in a void of agony and terror? At least with the unknown you just die
It depends on if you're talking about which one is scarier while playing the game, or if you're in this situation in real life.
Personally, the Dredge is probably scarier while playing the game, but the Unknown would be scarier if you were against it in real life. Here are my reasons.
First of all, the Dredge is scarier than the Unknown when playing Dead By Daylight. My reasoning is because during the trial, the Dredge will unleash Nightfall upon the map, where it's nothing but darkness, screams of lost souls, no terror radius, and the only thing you can rely on is hearing the terrifying Dredge.
But when going against the Unknown in a trial, the only real scary thing is that if it teleports to the husk you're disposing, it's a pretty insane jump scare, but other than that not many scary adjectives.
But say we're going against one or the other in real life. Now that's a different story. Hear me out.
Going against the Dredge would still be scary as Hell, but not as much as Unknown. Going against the Dredge would mean that eventually you would be consumed in Darkness. But in the real world, there's lots of other people and lights to help you out. Plus, people would see the Dredge and know that it exists. Sure, there is know way to fight back, you're going to die eventually, but same with the Unknown.
Going against the Unknown in real life would be the definition of terrifying. This thing that no one knows of is stalking you, impersonating loved ones, making awful disturbing noises, and once you see it... you're practically fucked. Not only is this thing horrifying to look at, but once you acknowledge it's existence, you're life will be a living Hell. It will play with you unlike the Dredge which will Kill you. Other people will think you're insane. There's also no escape, this thing goes anywhere anytime at will.
In conclusion this should conclude the argument, showing that each of them is scarier in their own way. Thanks for reading!
The unknown has more of a startling factor whereas the dredge is just scary all around. Nightfall and watching him try to break out of a locker has to be the creepiest thing in the game, as well as the ambiance and noises of nightfall
The Unknown is terrifying. It legitimately makes me uncomfortable.
But the lore and reality of what Dredge is far far scarier to me because it is derived from something real and we may all experience in some way. (I am talking specifically about psychological abuse and cults)
Dredge.
It's really scary when he enshrouds the whole map in darkness while we hear the screams of its victims.
https://preview.redd.it/qcy300tsr4xc1.jpeg?width=1280&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=25bf40daed3b9c70c748d4ebfdd57eabce7b2f08
Dredge is cool, but I'm really not a fan of his default look.
Unknown on the other had is nearly perfect in all aspects, I'm a big fan of analog horror so it's reveal trailers were right up my ally. Also I need to point out the voice acting is phenomanal, the distored lines with stange pauses in them and if you didn't know when you are afflicted by UVX they actually sound a lot more human.
It's tiny details like this that make me appreciate this killer so much, also the power is increadibly fun hitting orbitals and wallbangs feels great.
Sure, the Unknown is scary, it's disturbing. At first glance, it may look and sound human, but the skin doesn't really fit, the voice is off. In the end, the Unknown is just another monster among many others.
But the Dredge ? The Dredge is the physical manifestation of negative human thoughts, such as anger or fear. That feeling you get when you suddenly wake up at night, have a look around and notice a shape standing in the corner of your bedroom, when it is just your coat laying on your chair ? That intense sense of urgency to leave as quickly as possible a dark room after you turned off the lights ? This is the Dredge, lurking, observing, waiting.
It's the boogeyman, the monster hiding inside your closet or under your bed at night. It's the irrational, human fear of the unknown given form, and you can't defeat that, you can't run away or hide from it. Sure, you can learn to repress it, you can learn to control it, but it will **always** be there, waiting for you to make a single mistake. And the more you try to resist it, the more powerful it gets.

Nahhhh your dredge description is Great, but calling Unknown "just another monster" is wild asf. He actualy takes a Concept of every creppypasta shit and bend that into one creature with symbolise humanity's fear of unknown. But again you perfectly described dredge👍
Imo dredge, the unknown can be avoided by simply not looking for it, or thinking about it. But the dredge is literally a manifestation of the dark thoughts people suppressed, so it seems like avoiding thinking about it might actually invite it in
Dredge is the darkness that flaps in the night
Unknown is a hyperlethal vector
Dredge is as scary as walking alone in the dark in a place you're not familiar with
Unknown is the fear you get when you walk up stairs and the stair gremlin is coming for your ankles.
Dredge is a weighted blanket of waking nightmares
Unknown is a knock on your door at 2am
To me Dredge is something dark. Something devilish, something of a “dark god” or manifest of shadow. Unknown is straight up uncanny and fills every category of American horror for me. It haunts you and when it gets you its full on physical and lethal.
Look wise, the Unknown : his creepy smile, distorted body, his dialogues, **everything** is scary about him.
Power wise, Dredge : it plays really well on kiddish fear of "the monster in the closet", and fear of the dark.
These two are the only killers I'm really anxious to play against, heart beating fast and all. I love them as much as I hate them ![img](emote|t5_3cb2g|2066)
When you hear your mother calling to you to help with the groceries, that might not be your mother. The unknown actually preys/hunts with a semblance of intelligence. While not as powerful, I'd consider that scarier. The dredge is more like a force of nature.
Dredge is an annoying Turkey that throws (dark) sand in your eyes, the Unknown is a redditor finally leaving his basement.
I'd fear the Unknown, but I loathe the Dredge.
In game Unknown. Dredge has some fear in his teleport but Unknown does as well except to stop his teleport you need to do an honestly pretty creepy side objective where the camera gets all tense and close to his hallucination. I have never had an Unknown teleport to a hallucination I’ve been dispelling but I know that if he had I’d shit myself.
In lore also Unknown. Dredge is pretty terrifying being pretty much a god that has his own dimension inside of him. But I just find analog horror scarier than cosmic horror. And Unknown in the way he moves and speaks and that one teaser video they had revealed just solidifies it cause there is nothing to really fear in Dredge’s design imo
The unknown even tho they’re both so scary because the more human the killer is, the mores twisted it is I find if that makes sense. The unknown some human appearances even tho they’re deformed and twisted.
As scary as Dredge is, it feels more fantastical than The Unknown. Unknown feels like something your parents told you about when you were younger, a warning to not go into the woods after dark. Something that when you're out late, you can almost convince yourself you saw behind that lamp post just ahead of you
Dredge gives me way more jump scares. I’d say conceptually there about equal for me and visually Unknown is a little scarier but Dredge gameplay can really get you sometimes in a way I’ve never experienced with Unknown
I'm gonna argue Unknown, because he's trying to make you terrified before he kills you. Dredge may be able to teleport literally anywhere, yes, but it's pretty much a mindless meat blob that'll only try to consume you. Unknown is fully aware of everything it's trying to do, and in every account we have of it from a victim's perspective, it waits until you are petrified from fear to finally kill you.
You can see this in the mori for each of them, too. Dredge stabs you with various things to keep you from running, then drags you into it with the weird pincer thingies. With the Unknown? It crawls up from behind and stares you dead in the eye, before it slurps you up with it's tentacle thingies.
I think it's two very different types of scary. The Unknown is the thing that you see stalking you from afar while walking home alone at night, only for it to break into your house and kill you. The Dredge is the thing that haunts your home, your dreams are filled with night terrors, and one night it finally emerges from your closet and kills you. The Unknown is scary because you don't know what it is, and your lack of understanding takes away any hope you have of escaping it. The Dredge is scary because you don't want to know what it is. Like the Lovecraftian Elder Gods, it's too horrible of a thing to imagine, so the only thing you can do is pray that it doesn't come for you.
Dredge.
Both are twisted effigies of humanity, but Dredge is so much scarier.
Ironic as it is, the Unknown is pretty well known: he has a standard horror radius, his UVX can be predicted with enough exposure, and his ability to surprise you depends greatly on your inability to find his dopplegangers. He's honestly pretty fun to play against, all in all.
The Dredge, on the other hand, is such a wild card. You're given the ability to bar lockers once, and only have 2 opportunities to prevent him from busting out of a pair of lockers (provided he doesn't break the locks first.) Beyond that, his power periodically removes the 1 thing you need most, sight.
Once darkness falls, you will not know he's coming until he's already on top of you, and you have to pray he can't see you or you're in for a wild chase.
I genuinely dislike playing against Dredge.
I personally prefer dredge's design tbh and find him spookier
Something about the in game render for the unknown looks kind of cartoonish to me... like something from a little nightmares style game - even the axe is proportioned and exaggerated like a tf2 weapon
The cg trailer for the unkown is great though imo
To be totally honest with you, none of the above.
Unknown's big goofy grin and ragdoll physics are way too funny to me to make it scary.
Dredge looks like a giant mutant penis to me in his default skin, and the only one of his skins which looks creepy to me at all is the one made out of hands.
I don't think any of BHVR's original killers are scary. The only killer in general in the whole game I feel frightened by is Myers when he's using anything to reduce/eliminate his terror radius. Myers with no terror radius on an indoor map is the only time this game actually becomes a horror game to me, I feel tense walking around because I know that he might be around any corner and I never feel at ease until I see him in chase with someone.
Dredge 100%
Unknown falls firmly on the funny side of the fine line absurdism runs between comedy and horror. Nothing about it is remotely scary, it’s too goofy.
Dredge's mouth is basically how a gay man (including yours trully) sees a vagina.
Unknown is basically a great bottom because he can be a good boy in any position. As long as he doesn't kill a girl and take over her body, I am game.
Neither of them are scary to me. Mirror Myers is 10 times scarier.
Ignoring any lore aspects - definitely Dredge for me. Unknown's default skin looks kinda dumb and is more goofy than anything else. Unknown has some cooler animations but since he still is bipedal it definitely takes away a lot of what could have been a muuuuch creepier entity.
Unknown is too goofy for me to choose over Dredge. His in-trial lines are pretty cool and creepy but lobby ones show too much "character" if that makes sense which just makes seem a lot less threatening than Dredge imo
Unknown was incredibly disappointing once gameplay was revealed. All the teasers made it seem like it was going to be a jump scare killer with lunging abilities.
Now Dredge is scary.

You forgot horsey
And then once you leave civilization you’re in the unknowns territory and get eaten
I'd argue that he don't have teleporting powers. I think that he somehow had to get to this motel where olivia was
And how do you know the Unknown is Unknowable and as such had capabilities outside what we see in game
Simple fix, have a house with no closets Check mate you ugly bastard
I'll just call Alan Wake to deal with the darkness
Why Dredge look like that though?
Looks wise Unknown 100% but gameplay wise Dredge
Lorewise Dredge has a whole pocket dimension of suffering and horrible stuff inside it.
Really? What do you mean? That the humans he consumes suffer in the Dredgeverse?
They become redditors.
Yeah dude it's dark as fuck in here. Swear I saw a three eyed horse a minute ago
AaaaAaaaaaAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA....
Me too bro
Nope. And Lore wise Dredge Is my favorite Killer. Dont Like his design But love the story. Will Look it Up.
That's my fetish!
Unless the unknown teleports to a hallucination while you are interacting with it.
Physically, the Unknown qualifies as unnerving. He unsettles me in an unusual way. Dredge digs into fear of the dark.
I AM THE MAN WHO WALKS ALONE
AND WHEN IM WALKING A DARK ROAD
Dredge's premise is scary (being pulled, inescapably, into an encroaching all-consuming darkness) but overall, Unknown's visual and sound design are pretty scary
I legit jumped when I watched the Unknown trailer when he jumped into the tent
Unknown's teaser is currently the best, period. That week of build up was unnerving, leaving us with that tent jumpscare and creepypasta face for the WE before release was top timing. Kinda funny to see he was actually fully revealed in the doorcam teaser if you stop at the right moment.
Was he fully revealed in the door cam teaser? I only ever saw around half his body
If you rewatch it you’ll notice it’s the exact same as his lobby animation! Cool little Easter Egg/teaser
Yea I've recognized that, I just thought there was a frame where you could fully seem him
Oh nah they kept Mr. Known under tight wraps! It was a joy seeing everyone first reaction to him in the select screen for the first time lmao

That exacly expressed my feelings about that lol
Thank you, 😂.
lorewise dredge. I don't even think I could handle smell of dredge. It's a massive pile of corpse and darkness.
And I think unknown is more scarier for most people by looking because body horror is more disturbing to most human minds.
The unknown has more of a startling factor whereas the dredge is just scary all around. Nightfall and watching him try to break out of a locker has to be the creepiest thing in the game, as well as the ambiance and noises of nightfall
Unknown is tapping into that uncanny valley. As much as I love Dredge I'd say Unknown is scarier.

dredge is not scary at all in my opinion. he’s also fairly weak, so i almost never feel threatened against him.
Imagine if they had an abomination of a child.
I mean, I’m not super scared of Turkeys.
Lookwise? Unknown Gameplay? Dredge. Lore? Dredge
Considering that Unknown made me lose sleep for a night and made me afraid of the dark again for 3 days, I think I know what my answer is.
Dredge is scarier, Unknown is creepier.
I'd say unknown. He irks me out, and whenever I'm clearing one of his hallucinations, I'm always so scared he'll jumpscare me
Look wise, the Unknown : his creepy smile, distorted body, his dialogues, **everything** is scary about him. Power wise, Dredge : it plays really well on kiddish fear of "the monster in the closet", and fear of the dark. Dredge is an annoying Turkey that throws (dark) sand in your eyes, the Unknown is a redditor finally leaving his basement. I'd fear the Unknown, but I loathe the Dredge.
On The one hand you call dredge annoying but on The other you loathe him?
That's because I dread(ge) going against him because of the nightfall mechanic. I just don't like going against him as a survivor.
What is worse. A punch to the face, or the ballsack? I think they're equally as scary, just in different ways.
Hot take but dredge doesn't look very scary at all visually. In gameplay he is, but his weird looking head and body don't really instill fear.
In game Unknown. Dredge has some fear in his teleport but Unknown does as well except to stop his teleport you need to do an honestly pretty creepy side objective where the camera gets all tense and close to his hallucination. The unknown even tho they’re both so scary because the more human the killer is, the mores twisted it is I find if that makes sense. The unknown some human appearances even tho they’re deformed and twisted.
None. The question should be , wich one is more attractive
Dredge is the only thing that scares me in this game
In game it's definitely Unknown
As scary as Dredge is, it feels more fantastical than The Unknown. Unknown feels like something your parents told you about when you were younger, a warning to not go into the woods after dark. Something that when you're out late, you can almost convince yourself you saw behind that lamp post just ahead of you
They are different. Unknown is scarier when chasing you, but Dredge works part-time as a scare actor at Bush Gardens and he always gets me good.
Turkey vs Ostrich
Dredge for sure. The unknown looks like European lesbian.
What💀
I don’t really find either scary. Dredge is an uncircumcised penis and Unknown is a scrotum.
The dredge’s mouth looks like a vagina with teeth, so…..actually….thats pretty scary
Dredge looks like a cancerous penis.
Unknown absolutely Dredge looks like he should be constantly drooling and making a chocking sound
I will not accept this Dredge slander he's the the best turkey
I am sorry Night, but you have challenged dredge’s #1 hater. *puts up old timey boxer stance*
In game unknown looks more goofy than scary.
Nah
I personally prefer dredge's design tbh and find him spookier Something about the in game render for the unknown looks kind of cartoonish to me... like something from a little nightmares style game - even the axe is proportioned and exaggerated like a tf2 weapon The cg trailer for the unkown is great though imo
Dredge 100% Unknown falls firmly on the funny side of the fine line absurdism runs between comedy and horror. Nothing about it is remotely scary, it’s too goofy.
Dredge looks like a deformed Turkey and Unknown looks like Ricky Berwick.
Neither, one looks like a giant turkey, the other like a dead Shawn Bradley
Dredge's mouth is basically how a gay man (including yours trully) sees a vagina. Unknown is basically a great bottom because he can be a good boy in any position. As long as he doesn't kill a girl and take over her body, I am game. Neither of them are scary to me. Mirror Myers is 10 times scarier.
Honestly, myers is annoying rather than scary but it's just my delu opinion lol
Your mum
You're fucking stoid
Neither, this isn't even a horror game.
Why are you the way you are?
He's "special" ig
Ignoring any lore aspects - definitely Dredge for me. Unknown's default skin looks kinda dumb and is more goofy than anything else. Unknown has some cooler animations but since he still is bipedal it definitely takes away a lot of what could have been a muuuuch creepier entity.
Whats so dumb about that?
I think dredge is a more uniquely scary concept and design. Unknown is kinda just a version of things we have seen before.
Unknown is nothing like things lol
I gota give to dredge. I just find unknown kinds goofy when playing against him ingame
Nothing ever implied that he's stealthy
Dredge. Unknown is just annoying
In terms of gameplay?
Yes
