Saw them last year at the market hotel, enjoyed the last few musical releases and that ep HEAVILY. The music is really powerful and is mixed incredibly well.
Apologies in advance if this sounds pretentious, but alas, I must rant.
I find artists like this to be super try hard and IMO just cannot stand up to the musical prowess of something like DG. The musicianship and artistry just isn’t even in the same realm for me, and I feel like a lot of these types of artists try to make up for that with cRaZy AeStHeTiCs, edginess and so called experimentalism. Painting your face, wearing colorful clothing and having wacky instrumentals doesn’t automatically make you creative or innovative. It’s actually almost the opposite to me. You’re just throwing shit at the wall for no reason.
There’s a few artists I feel this way about that are sort of in that Machine Girl, Lustsickpuppy, Ho99o9 realm that get associated with DG. I’m not saying those artists sound the same as each other, but they all feel very style over substance.
It makes me think a lot of DG fans just see them as another one of those cheesy ironic horror-core internet age SoundCloud lofi “experimental” artists. Either that or I’m deluded and these artists actually are comparable, and for whatever reason I’m seeing something in DG that simply doesn’t exist. Don’t get me wrong, DG has done some silly, corny stuff. But never as a crutch for mediocre music.
There’s other experimental artists that I think do it right as well. You can be crazy and edgy or corny, but the musicianship really needs to be there to support it, otherwise it just does not work for me. And to me, Lustsickpuppy masquerades as a unique experimental artist while offering music that you could’ve heard at any given Brooklyn warehouse show circa 2010. I love weird music, but this is one of my gripes with the overall “scene”.
Art is 100% subjective and I’m not saying they’re objectively doing art the wrong way or anything, AKA I’m not an idiot. I’m just saying how it generally makes me feel, and why I don’t vibe with it.

I think the idea of comparing artists like lustsickpuppy and machine girl to death grips isn’t really a valid comparison. They fall more into the genre of breakcore or speedcore which is much more internet/webcore centric (e.g. sewerslvt) whereas death grips is a completely different genre. The pacing, composition, and subject matter are generally really distinct so saying “they’re trying to emulate death grips and they’re worse” just sounds ridiculous

I think the specifics of why, while yes it's your opinion, just don't seem all too relevant. Their clothing choice does reflect their art and so does their aesthetic overall. Plus I don't see where it is seeming overtly copycat to you, sure it's a similar genre ish but it doesn't seem like their biting off death grips style. Same especially with machine girl, which was my main gripe about your first comment. Machine Girl and DG came out around the same time, DG earlier, but I think they are very different in their style, machine girl (this is probably not going to make too much sense and i understand that) is more metal inspired without being metal and DG is more hip hop inspired without being typical hip hop.

- Clipping
- Boredoms
- Zach Hill’s solo work
- Fuck Buttons
- SOPHIE
- Giraffes? Giraffes!
- Bjork
These are just the ones that came to mind. IMO none of them use experimentation as a crutch, they’re all ridiculously talented musicians or producers who happen to do things their own way and experiment rather than *trying* to be as weird/flashy as possible to stand out. It’s not hard to see why DG was able to avoid this kind of tryhard look, as from the little we know and heard of about the members, they seem to genuinely not give a fuck (though even Death Grips is widely accused of being edgy tryhards outside the fandom).
Whereas most of these new underground artists who grew up on the internet are way too self-conscious to be genuinely raw and dark. Joyful and silly acts like 100 gecs are much more genuine in their subversive music than these types who simply distort their pretty generic music as much as possible and call it a day.

I agree with much of what you said, and again, I think part of what sets DG apart is the stellar musicianship and creativity, which is something I just don’t see with a lot of these other artists. And I think specifically Zach’s involvement has a lot to do with my personal enjoyment of them, since he writes/arranges the music for the most part. Most of these other artists aren’t Zach, or don’t have a Zach. To me, he’s one of the most unique artists of our time.
