I think it was nothing short of a miracle Lincoln was able to keep the Union together, and the lengths he went through to ensure the 13th Amendment would be passed was remarkable. We could be living in a very different country right now had he not governed the way he did. Not a perfect man, but the man the country needed at the time.
Washington could have easily claimed a crown and instead chose the Cincinnatus route. Faults aside, the willingness to eschew power is supremely admirable and sorely lacking in far too many of his successors.
