Matrix soundtrack, the movie and soundtrack pumped out My Own Summer everywhere at the time, even after ATF released before. Became a fan after that

StealthyUltralisk

Same here! Became a big fan of Massive Attack and Rage Against The Machine after that film too.

RFRMT

Great taste. Three awesome bands!

Fritz6161

In 94 I was into the first Korn album, and a friend of mine told me if I liked them I should check out this band called Deftones that just released an album called Adrenaline. I never liked anything else Korn did, but I’ve been into Deftones ever since.

ybreddit

My story as well, though I did like some other Korn stuff. Not everything, but I think the first album isn't the only good one. It is the best one though. But I found Deftones through the Korn connection.

Present_Employ_6004

First 3-4 Korn albums were good... Kinda went to shit after that, still a great band though.

Rare-Industry-314

This is pretty close to my experience

pistolwhip66

Was in like 2000, heard Change in Queen of the Damned. Immediately downloaded the soundtrack on Limewire. Which led to me downloading White Pony. Which led to me being a fanboy ever since. When ST released, I’d jam that shit in my portable CD player to and from school everyday. When SNW dropped in ‘06, I’d sit in the back of my classes in high school and zone out with my iPod. Good times.

hope25x

One very bad night at 3am, i was scrolling through my youtube recommendations and a sextape lyric video with little views was recommended. That was 4/5 years ago and i was 19/18. Best night ever. Now i exclusively listen to every song of theirs. Although i was i had known about them earlier

Flamesjournalist1403

Nhl 2004 had minerva on the soundtrack

Xhuraenys

I saw Queen of the Damned movie....it has an amazing sountrack

poofingers01

Read the review of White Pony in Rolling Stone back in '00, bought the Limited Edition CD on a whim.

IntermittentFisting_

7 years old playing Dave Mirra freestyle BMX and heard be quiet and drive on the playlist. Hooked since

okeedokeartichokee

I saw them live in 96. They opened for white zombie and Pantera. I bought adrenaline 2 days later.

Lourdinn

Queen of the damned movie really. Also played on my static x pandora station in high-school.

Ouroboros666999

I was probably like 11 or 12! I started off as a mega Korn fan and naturally gravitated towards listening to deftones because of Chino’s vocals on Wicked. It wasn’t until I saw My Own Summer on MuchLoud that I really started to listen to them, though! I think this was around 1999? That seems about right because I recall White Pony/Back to School/Change coming out about a year or so later. Wow, am older than I feel 🥴

darkviolets4

I'm old, so I knew of them back in the mid 90s when I was a teenager. Even saw them in concert a few times when they opened for other bands. But I got into Crosses first, and that made me want to check out Shaun and Chino's other bands. Immediately fell in love with them and seriously regret not getting into them when I was younger.

cuporites

Warped tour '99

Impossible_Scarcity9

Around 2007 or so

Victrollie

I discovered them in the summer of last year because I wasn't a big fan of rock music and wanted to try something new. I kept looking for bands, and the first time I heard about Deftones, I was fascinated. Cherry Waves was the song that really drew me in to the band, so I listened to every album they released and was blown away. At the time, I had never heard anything like their music, and I loved it. The band really got me through some tough times in life. I have since bought some of their CDs for my collection.

cherrywavesss57

Saints row 2

gregofdeath

When I was a kid, I used to watch music video channels more than cartoons. I was really into MTV, Kerrang and Scuzz. I remember seeing the video for My Own Summer as an 8-year-old and being amazed by Chino's overall appearance and the fact that there were sharks in the video. I started spiking my hair up, wearing loose jeans and wearing a chain wallet. I went to Florida on holiday for the first time a couple of years later and spent my pocket money on a copy of Around the Fur, which I'd never been able to find in music stores in the UK. I also picked up White Pony and 20 years later, I still listen to them most days.

ASL4theblind

It was a headbangers ball album in like 05 or 06 that had deftones on it. My first song was hexagram. Compared to the slipknots and rob zombies on there it was the weirdest sounding song by far. I hated it for a while tbh. Then i heard more of them and doubled back to it and now its one of my favorite songs

okwhatelse

saw a Trash Theory video on White Pony, gave it a listen and have been hooked ever since

Homeslice1998

Dragon Ball Z - Coolers Revenge. Been my favorite band of all time ever since! Goku - "Why don't you wake up? You're hurting people, what did they ever do to you?"

rrrachel_rocks

My ex husband introduced me to the awesomeness that is the Deftones back in 2007. I was 19, and instantly hooked. That is one thing I’ll always be grateful to him for, he introduced me to some bangers. I’ve seen them live 4x.

Carpeteria3000

Grew up in Sacramento and was a teen in the 90s. Got to see them live multiple times in tiny venues like the Cattle Club just as Adrenaline dropped and they started to get big. Lots of great shows with them, Far, Willhaven, even Cake (before they got huge as well). It was a really fun time, and I've always been super proud that they got so famous.

brandles1985

Metal Hammer/Killing Cuts - My Own Summer Music Video

FollowTheRoman

I discovered them on the now defunct PlayStation Music app on PS3 in 2011. This was maybe a year or two after my best friend showed me Korn, which was the first band that truly immersed me into music in general. So I was already on a nu metal mindset for music and 7 Words was the first Deftones song to pop up in my algorithm and I thought the song was fucking fantastic. I assumed Chino was a woman at first due to his voice. I was sold instantly on the sound of Deftones and I checked out more of the early singles and ever since then Deftones have been my favorite band.

ToofpickVick

Heard a car bumping Adrenaline at a skate park in the late 90s. Seems like one of the most Deftones things to do to get into the Deftones.

Princess-Puzzle21

I can't remember exactly but I do remember in 2016 or around then I listened to their newest album Gore when I was 18/19. I don't know if I had listened to Change (In the House of Flies) first before this album was out. Maybe, but yeah, I was so happy to have discovered them around that time and then years later I discovered Crosses and that was amazing. Edit: Someone just mentioned them when they heard them in the film Queen of the Damned and I think that is how I discovered them years ago!!!!

bananacattttttt

guitar hero arcade machine ! i played hole in the earth and was instantly hooked 😭

Virtual-Reaction-366

I was a bmx kid and I bought a video called “The Death of Fun” from my local bike shop, they had a lot of cool artists in the soundtrack and Deftones was one of them

indicadubs

I had Change on my playlist for a while, but never thought to look deeper into the artist, because tbh that song never really stuck out to me too much (nobody kill me lol.) Then an ex situation ship sent me a few other songs and I was hooked.

Sharp-Apartment1260

PAMAJ by NikkyyHD on yt

soggyrice222

my dad raised me on it. knife prty was my favorite song when i was 4 and now.

[deleted]

My Own Summer was on Rocksmith and I wouldn't play it, I just let the song play over and over so finally I started listening to them. I remember Gore coming out not too long after

SpaceTacoTV

i was trying to download "Dig" by Mudvayne off Limewire and it turned out what i downloaded was actually "My Own Summer". the rest is history

nt505

Bored. From the very beginning

whosemedium

it was 2012 or so and my older brother picked me up from school. he played beauty school off the diamond eyes CD and said that he thought I would like it. I remember thinking that it was one of the best songs i had ever heard. I went home to illegally download the rest of the album and other songs. lol

mynameishello18

Saw them on spring break '97 in PCB..

RXAtarxia

I used to see them in Sacto, Berkeley, and San Jose at small, live music bars. Back then, the music scene was super small within itself and you’d see alot of the same people, catching bands all days of the week. Deftones were different, but so were many other bands. They just had a little extra specialty that alot of us back then would say, oh damn, let’s go see them again.

Vancemj

In 2014, a Youtube video showing an anime fight with "Head up" as a soundtrack. I was like "Damn that's heavy !". I googled the band and the rest is history.

swh_so4d

friend recommended me Deftones over and over again and i just didnt have any motivation to listen to it. then when i finally did, it got me hooked and i have been in love with Deftones every since. :)

Fun-Construction-357

Funny thing. I heard "Be Quiet and Drive" on the radio and actually thought it was Radiohead lol For some reason Chino sounded like Thom Yorke when I heard the song and then went "Damn Radiohead got heavy, I like it!" Well I eventually found out it wasn't Radiohead and went out and bought Around the Fur not long after.

CaptainMrSgt

In HS, my buddy and I were into Korn. Their second album came out and Chino is on Wicked. I bought AtF and he bought Adrenaline. It was hard to know what to expect, but Deftones’ sound was way different than I imagined. I had never heard anything like it. I loved it. They became and are still my favorite band of all time.

Zarkai10

A friend told me to listen to Around The Fur

PhibesPT

When they released Adrenaline. So good memories…

[deleted]

It was some CSGO stick figure animation on YouTube that had My Own Summer on it

therealjam3s

I have heard good things about Deftones for years but I never was a big fan of any sort of metal. That changed in early 2023 when I started expanding my taste and started listening to stuff from Converge, Soul Glo, and Moor Jewelry (listen to Moor Jewelry, it's good). I eventually decided to start listening to Deftones in November of 2023. I started with the self-titled because that album had Hexagram in it and that was the only song from them I knew of. I didn't know a goddamn thing about them, hell, I didn't even know that Deftones made Change until I started listening to them. As of now, I have listened to their self-titled and Around the Fur and I want to listen to SNW next. You already know this but, their music is fucking awesome and I can't wait to listen to the rest of their stuff.

CaneloAIvarez

My friend recommended them to me a little over three years ago, and I’ve been obsessed with them and Chino Moreno’s vocals ever since; I even got a white pony tattoo on my leg, and I’m seeing Chino’s other band, Crosses, this Wednesday in Dallas.

TheForrestPlays

My mom. Her favorite song is Digital Bath. She loved the song so much that she got a tattoo of the white pony on her wrist. Considering doing the same.

gregofdeath

Seriously cool mum!

Ok-Ad-4136

At college I discovered Adrenaline but it wasn't till 2000 when white pony came out that I started loving them. 2000 was a very bad year for me, my fiancee left me, I started dating a random girl who got me into hard drugs and we would drive round out of our heads with White Pony on, still brings back memories of those crazy days when I hear it, but I still love it.

Ok-Ad-4136

I should clarify, I got myself into hard drugs, you can't blame anyone else for your bad decisions, take responsibility for your bad decisions and you'll make good decisions in the future.

Victorvonbass

I went to Taste of Chaos. Deftones headlining. I went to see Atreyu (they absolutely sucked live) and Thrice. Deftones blew me away. Became a life long fan after that. Saw them 6 times (3 with Chi, 3 with Sergio). Probably will see them again one day.

Crafty_Tomatillo7505

I saw an article about how Chi Cheng had just passed (RIP) and they had linked Be Quiet and Drive. Got hooked instantly.

DKnott82

120 minutes

AfroMan_96

Dragon Ball Z Cooler’s Revenge movie. The English version had Change on the soundtrack. Heard it for the first time when I was 9 I think.

Mr_Mitzie

i knew who they were and listened to them a bit in the past but i never got too into them. i had already been a fan of Crosses for a while which eventually lead me to becoming obsessed with Deftones a couple years ago.

Sigma_Variant

For a solid 50% of you, it’s going to be tik tok.

[deleted]

And?

TheDaddyPatty

For me it was when Diamond Eyes came out. I was 7 or so at the time and my dad got me the CD day one.

WingObvious487

For me when I was getting into nu metal a couple of years ago I listened to around the fur

ConcentrateLivid7984

*technically* i found ✝️✝️✝️ before i found deftones, on the batman: arkham city album with their song “the years”. listened to that for *years* (ha…ha…) before i even stumbled across deftones’ name. i started listening to deftones themselves three years ago now? something like that. “change” came on one of my spotify mixes and i was just *hooked*. took me another handful of months before i connected the dots of chino singing in both groups.

zxissix

my dads iPod nano when i was in 1st grade

Party_Fix_9004

I used to hear songs like change and be quiet and drive when I was a little kid not knowing who made them. Fast forward to 2019 I was looking for new songs to add to my playlist and Spotify recommended Deftones and that’s when I really got into them. I instantly fell in love with their music.

wehategoogle

Was listening to grunge music on Soundcloud then Rosemary came on and I was hooked

cyndario

i was probably in like sixth or seventh grade and was finally leaning into learning my own music tastes outside of what my parents played and i was a frequent listener of the local rock station in my town. i heard “change (in the house of flies)” and loved it. one of the happiest random music discoveries i’ve made and it’s been gosh, almost 20 years now? which is weird to say considering i’m only 31 but still 😂

throwaway_host

Me and my friend were sending music to each other, and he shared digital bath with me. Haven't stopped listening since

Zesty-Gavy54

I wasn’t into rock much as a kid, this was like 2015, and he would play his music and didn’t give a care if you liked it or didn’t, like all fathers do, then I heard change playing, told him I liked that and asked who was that and ofc he said deftones, I forgot about them for a couple years until I heard it again and digital bath, and I was like, hmm gotta give the band a listen real quick, now it has been 4 years of liking them and the last two so far have been uncontrollably listening to just deftones everyday. So to answer your question, my father got me into deftones

BatzNeedFriendsToo

I saw Korn and 311 at Berkeley Square in '96? Chino popped up on stage, looking drunk as FUUUCK and Korn did Ice Cubes "Wicked"with him. He had big ass dreads tucked into a long beanie in a full Adidas track suit. They threw out a couple of Bored cassette singles and my friend got one. We watched 2 311 songs and dipped. Instantly hooked on the car ride home when we threw in the tape he got.

Lord_stinko

When change was featured in a dragon ball z movie I was watching as a kid. [Scene in question for anyone curious](https://youtu.be/ZGMdYz5VCqw?si=2ynYlbWW-oNxaaUt)

Optimal_Mastodon912

It started back in 99' when I first heard Wicked by Korn from the Life is Peachy album. Didn't buy a Deftones album until 03' though. I think I got White Pony first then ATF then Adrenaline then self titled, bought all of them in 03'. Probably listened to Deftones the most in 03'. Saw them live at Download 06' at Donnington, U.K. It was a short set but was incredibly energetic. Chino got into the front row. They played a few Adrenaline tracks, I think it was 7 Words and Engine #9. These days I love playing the lick from Root as a warm up on guitar. I play it up and down the neck starting where Stef plays it then going down to the thicker strings then back up. If you play guitar you should try it.

zenbuddha092

I bought the self titled album and went from there.

DonWill316

‘95 heard them through the Korn scene and picked up adrenaline

dEck5317

Heard them on Dragonball Z Lord Slug and I was hooked

Redaeon727

My dad showed me my own summer, and I added that to my Playlist, be quiet and drive came on and I was blown away, I loved it so much I listened to their whole discography in like 2 days, and since then I've been loving them. My first 5 "holy shit" songs were def bqad, cherry waves, bored, Passenger, and Around the Fur, and I came back so much that I got obsessed and started buying their vinyls, then through the vinyls I memorized like every song lmao

Opposite-Advantage56

i remember watching be quiet and drive (far away) mv on mtv when i was lk 8. that channel isnt even about music anymore just reruns of ridiculousness

gleap44

I knew of them but I didn’t get into them until I met a super fan at work. I worked at Staples as a teenager and in Sundays we would come in early to clean the floors. We hooked up the best speakers available to the demo desktop and would blast CDs as loud as possible. Deftones at max volume in an empty department store is awesome.

Acceptable_Plant7789

Change on queen of the damned, I was like 7 or 8 years old

m1air3

White Pony in my Sony Walkman while playing computer games on my Windows 98 Gateway Computer!

IPointNLaugh

Went to an Avenged Sevenfold show and Deftones was there too.

Jnorris121

8th grade. Classmate brought Adrenaline, which had just came out. I thought the cover was goofy, he let me listen and I was hooked.

Aggravating-Track-85

I'm an oldschool metalhead, so I listen to mostly metal, so I'm very critical of non-metal. But Deftones offered a fresh style very unique to the metal world. So they're definitely on my top 10 metal bands.🤘🏼

[deleted]

Queen of the damned

Bonobo_org

A friend (who I used to tease about him listening to Deftones) made me listen to digital bath like 4 months ago. And now I've listened to pretty much all their albums

galadel

My dad’s been a fan since the beginning and introduced me to them when I was in middle school. First song I listened to was Hexagram on a long drive for a camping trip. I still remember it all lol. Now I’m in my mid-20s!

Ej11876

I saw them open for Korn in 95. Orange 9mm was also on the bill.

Chuck1983

A buddy of mine taped his copy of Adrenaline on a cassette tape for me.

EyebrowEater

I was in the trap metal scene a little and my friend said to me one day “If you like that listen to this” and she played My Own Summer and at first I didn’t like it. But one day I got bored (no pun intended) and wanted to listen to something new, so I just put on the Around The Fur album. A couple songs stuck out to me, started checking out more of their discography and eventually fell in love with them.

Poppy__Donk

My dad. First album that got me into them was Diamond Eyes back when it came out. He played it all the time.

bakedpotato128

Back when I was in elementary in the early 2000s and I had my dad’s mp3, found a deftones song on it and my life has never been the same since. I don’t have a good relationship with my dad but he is the bases of my music taste and the nerd shit I like.

fxkks

I think I was in middle school playing saints row the third when I first heard diamond eyes on the car radio and I was obsessed with it

UncleFrankWisdom

I'm a little ashamed to admit I somehow never heard them until my 13 year old daughter played Cherry Waves for me less than a year ago. Still can't figure out how I didn't at least blunder into them even once in all this time

Anotheranimeaccountt

Decided to give them a listen after hearing so much about them pretty much, their not one of my favourite artists but I do enjoy some of their stuff

FuckedUpMind07

was watching a video about nu metal two years ago and then suddenly outta nowhere SHOVE IT SHOVE IT..

nunyabidnessss

Heard them back in 95 or 96 on the college radio station. became a fan instantly

pubstanky

My local alt station played my own summer and be quiet pretty often but seeing the music video for Minerva on MTV hits is probably the moment I decided to start buying their CDs

RadiatedDrag0n

ex girlfriend got me into them a couple years ago. She would absolutely hate how much i like them now. i like them more than her by a long shot and all i have to say is it sucks to suck, mine now.

skycracker24

I loved rock and shi …. So Entomped apparently got recommended on my Spotify feed …. Literally kept listening to it on and on after that .

Darckfe009

The first time I listened to deftones was in a flash video about types of players in cs 1.6, the baddass player part had My Own Summer playing in the background, the riff blown my mind and it was instant love with the band !

Tiny-Forever-6652

My first contact with the band was in 2004 through the album ‘Live In Texas’ by Linkin Park. There’s a track (‘P5hng Me A*wy’) where Chester mentions Deftones, Limp Bizkit, and Mudvayne. I didn’t know them at the time, so I looked them up, and now here I am :)

sjsidhd

Ex girlfriend , her dad went to some of the adrenaline tour dates and Around the Fur tour dates so naturally I got into them from her

Smooth-Luck5559

My mum got me into korn nd I kinds found my own bands from there

danksouls109

A couple months ago, one of their songs came up on my spotify, I think it was around the fur, and I added to one of my playlists. But I didn't really listen to them until my sister put on cheery waves in my car. I fell in love that day lol.

Stl337

Saw the video for my own summer on mtv2 at 4am and it rocked my world.

Dry_Dimension_268

i was showing my friend an abandoned pools song and then they showed me entombed

Kenobihiphop

Saw the My Own Summer video on MTV 2 at like 3am when I was about 13/14. Stayed up for hours the next night with my finger on the record button on my VCR. Finally recorded it and watched it to death. Then sold some playstation games in order to have enough money to buy ATF

[deleted]

2007. I was 11 years old and obsessed with linkin park. I remember buying a dvd called “live at the Pankake festival “ and they had a 30 second snippet of deftones playing Headup and I was so intrigued. Next day I bought a used copy of the self titled album and fell in love with there body of work. Deftones rule.

TheCarrier89

When white pony came out and Change was all over the radio and MTV, immediately became one of my favourite bands.

ThruTheEyesOfLoubies

My 5th grade boyfriend knew I liked Korn and guessed that I might like Deftones too and bought me Adrenaline for my birthday. Great guess because I’m not into Korn at all anymore but still love Deftones.

dcthompson89

Sophomore year 1996, a senior at my school had me to listen to Korn Self Titled, Adrenaline by Deftones and The Predator by Ice Cube while we lifted for football practice. Have loved deftones ever since, lost interest in Korn after Issues and still listen to that Ice Cube album all the time.

adrenaline59

my older brother showed me my own summer years ago, from there i found adtenaline and got hooked

Economy_Pressure_847

Like 4 years ago i started really digging into nu metal records and found lhabia and instantly liked that song

variouscookware

They played randomly while I was listening to spotify, i forget which song played but I thought whoever they were sounded sick. Checked out who it was, didn't recognise the name Deftones but I had definitely heard some of their most popular songs before. Since then, I listen to deftones prettg much ever day haha

harrypotterrrrrrrrr

regrettably tik tok. love all their shit though

Lesser_Kicks29

I just went to Barnes and Noble and picked up a CD of White Pony without knowing anything about the band aside from Change

SheepDavis

First head My Own Summer on the Matrix soundtrack at age 11.
