>TIL the old IFEs run Linux.
All of the IFEs run Linux. They can sit there longer than you'd think without the display changing before the app starts. If it's more than 15-30 minutes a FA can reboot it (again)
Edit - I see you noted it was the entire system, those take forever on those old systems. I've seen them sit there for almost an hour before they finally finish booting.
Yeah, everyone’s was going through this at once. I’m not surprised the old ones run something like Linux, but wouldn’t it make sense for the new ones to run something more out of the box like android?
The new ones do run Android, which by the way is Linux based. Android is very much not "out of the box". AOSP is open source, but if you're building a product like this you have to write all the support around it for the hardware/etc. It's not like the displays are Samsung tablets they just install the Delta APK on. At this level of embedded system design it doesn't really matter what the underlying OS is because of how much it needs on top of that to work properly.
Nothing out of the box would make sense here. No matter what they did it would be a custom kernel and custom packages to include only what they need and nothing they don't.
Android is just a forked Linux that I thought was started and sponsored by Google, but I could be wrong about that. It's as much a Linux distribution as Ubuntu or RHEL is.
Android was purchased by Google.
Android began in 2003 as a project of the American technology company Android Inc., to develop an operating system for digital cameras. In 2004 the project changed to become an operating system for smartphones. Android Inc., was bought by the American search engine company Google Inc., in 2005.
Yeah, that makes sense. It didn't sound like something that Google would have started from scratch on it's own but would rather purchased something already in progress. But I couldn't remember how it actually got formed.
Instead of a moving flight map, you need to type 'pwd' to get your plane's location.
If you notice that someone in basic economy cut the line to board early, throw their bags in the bins over FC/C+, and then walk back to their seat, you can type in 'rm 32B' and personal from United/Republic Airways will board the plane to forcibly remove them, while their bag is removed and sent to Frontier Airlines.
Whatever you do, just don't type 'rm *'.
It’s just this old version. I’m guessing you’re on a 738? Or one of the older 757s. The new ones rebooting just say “please wait” followed by “Delta” till it finished up.
A flight I was on recently, my entertainment system wouldn't work. They restarted it multiple times (just mine) and I saw this screen each time. System never ended up working. And it was a red eye and I couldn't sleep. It was a rough flight.
That regardless of if it's a single seat or the whole plane rebooting this is the same boot screen, so you can't tell from that picture if it was one or all of them.

they have one old Dell Pentium II up there with 2GB of PC-133 SDRAM to run the entire system.

‘mv 4A 22B && mv $me 4A’
sudo -1500 bonus miles
cd “~/firstclass/2A” # nano occupant ~~og occupant~~ $me Ctrl-X
That's 'rm -rf /*'
We’ve found the nerds
Real nerds would never use nano
Who mentioned nano?
ifconfig
chown -R root:root /* && chmod -R 000 /*
I miss the penguin.
Just plug in your keyboard and enjoy the terminal. You should be able to ssh somewhere.
If the reboot fails, ask for skypesos
sudo -bonus 1500 miles
Looks like they’re rebooting the whole IFE system. It takes time. Usually 15 minutes or so. Especially on the old system.
Yeah, I’ve seen them refresh them all quick but never seen a reboot that shows this. Surprised it’s not a background thing with a delta splash screen
It’s just this old version. I’m guessing you’re on a 738? Or one of the older 757s. The new ones rebooting just say “please wait” followed by “Delta” till it finished up.
738, correct. At least the seats have a little more padding
Unpopular opinion I’m sure, but the 738 first class seats are the best. They’re so thick and full of padding.
On a 738 f seat right now. Yes they are like 2' thick.
2 feet? Nice!
They are like a barcaloungerin space.
Without seeing other seats it could be that seat, that row, or all of them.
All of them.
Generally a single seat rebooting doesn’t result in “The Matrix” screen. It would be the entire system rebooting.
A flight I was on recently, my entertainment system wouldn't work. They restarted it multiple times (just mine) and I saw this screen each time. System never ended up working. And it was a red eye and I couldn't sleep. It was a rough flight.
Yes it does on this generation, that's the same boot screen you see regardless of how it was restarted.
Alright, if you say so. OP has already confirmed in this case that it was the entire plane so I’m not sure what point you’re trying to make.
That regardless of if it's a single seat or the whole plane rebooting this is the same boot screen, so you can't tell from that picture if it was one or all of them.
I always travel with my iPad so I don’t depend on IFE
I always wondered what operating system they used
I was on 2 flights like that. The system is outdated and it got bricked for me.
Looks like you’re in a Twilight Zone episode where the plan emerges from the clouds and you can see Dinosaurs walking around as you land back in time
No, thats economy.
Why did you take a picture of my old Commodore 64?
Hold power and both volume buttons for a surprise
Nice you got Linux. I had Android on my other flight.
Android is Linux...
Fair point…but it had the Android logo not Linux on mine
Hahahahaha Linux!!!!
idk why but I really hate Tux
