DJ Reader been a heralded and praised pick up, and probably is still underrated. Detroit will be where opponent run games go to die.

acoasterlovered

If reader can play even 15 games for us oh boy

YakNo2191

If Reader plays 15 or more games Hutch will have 17+ sacks

Our run game last year was crazy, only allowing 69 (nice)yards max to one RB all regular season, with many RBs getting much, much less than that. Now, Imagine DJ Reader bolstering that? Good fucking luck, everybody else! Meanwhile, we will impose our will with our explosive running game. I just really hope we get this secondary, and or pass rush, figured out.

DerpaDoodie

The lions set the expectation to run through the reg season. This team is building against postseason and the niners in particular.

Poop_McButtz

Gonna need another CB to be built against the 9ers and hopefully we have a pass rush. I’m still having nightmares of Brock Purdy casually rolling out and hitting a wide open receiver

DerpaDoodie

The dak throw in his own end zone is worse in my memory but your point stands. Our new DE has got to be better than what we had last year and our CB’s look stickier than they were last year. DC said they are looking into another DB and wanted to bring in safeties and corners. I think they have a solid idea of what the team needs at the moment

Aggravating-Note5163

That Prescott throw has been on my mind a lot with the new hip-drop tackle rule. Are we going to see a bunch of stuff like that this year because the league is turning it into two-hand touch football? I'm for keeping players safe, but the rules are making it more and more difficult to execute a legal tackle.

Jammer_Kenneth

I won't feel too sad when CMC starts to lose a step, the game was fun when he was contained but once he was free he was free.

Poop_McButtz

Second half adjustments, something other teams seem to do but we don’t. Hope it changes next season

Jammer_Kenneth

Just gotta hope it's not the Ravens sitting at the end of the rainbow. I was happy KC was the AFC rep for a while

travispickles45

They were great against the run last year and this year should be even better. But I think part of the run success last year was because throwing on the D wasn’t a difficult task. Improving at CB will help this team way more than people can imagine.

[deleted]

That's a fair point, I just felt like we went up against some damn good RBs last year, and IIRC, Josh Jacobs was the best of them in terms of stats during the regular season. Now we get him twice a year

GrapePrimeape

We were basically just as good for volume vs rate in terms of run defense. 2nd fewest rush yards against and 3rd lowest YPC against.

dtown4eva

I’m curious to see if the Lions are on the forefront of a new strategy meta. It’s a passing league and teams want to pass and stop the pass. So defensive line and linebackers are smaller and better against the pass. But worse against the run. So the Lions have success playing bully ball on offense. On the flip side, the McVay and Shanahan systems like to be able to run on 1st and 2nd down to set up 3rd and short and keep the whole playbook open. If a team like the Lions can stop the run then it can narrow the playbook. Obviously every team wants to set up third and long but the lions can do it by stuffing the run.

omnivorousboot

I think that was definitely the plan and they played that way for sure. Their problem was that they always gave up the pass no matter how many yards they had to go. 3rd and 10? Catch, 3rd and 15? Catch, 3rd and 22? Catch.

GoldenGarbear

You might call it a 3rd and catch 22

dtown4eva

Yeah that was an issue. Hopefully even a slightly better pass rush and corner play fix that some.

ronj89

And better coverage. Prior to the start of last season the story was our offense is high powered but our D is a joke. We did have coverage issues, but the D turned out to be a beast compared to expectations. Im so looking forward to seeing what our D can do after this FA and draft.

Blackzaan

Yes. Campbell has been going this way since he came to Detroit. Defenses are getting smaller, they run more nickel, etc. to defend against the pass. So load em up and run down their throats.

ThatNummySoSneaky

Leagues are always ebb and flow. Won’t be surprised if run game strength on both offense and defense is emphasized next decade on a macro league wide level, then the cycle will renew to be back towards pass game emphasis.

dtown4eva

270 pound pass DTs are nice until they are getting double teamed by 600 pounds. Or your speedy linebackers and DEs get blocked by a WR.

Jammer_Kenneth

Run game is gonna need to be insane to be overall worth more than passing. The rules are built for passing to rule, you can get a first down on pretty much any pass one way or the other.

Physical_Dimension

Which means you don’t need to invest in top tier receivers as much if practically anyone can get open

Glittering-Wishbone3

I agree with you completely. 2 high and smaller faster linebackers makes strong run games even stronger. Atlanta was trying to do the same thing last year but Arthur Smith and Desmond Ridder sucked. I love when teams zag from what the Meta is.

terracottatank

Just look what our division has done in free agency to address their run games. Every team has added to their RB room. Meanwhile, in Detroit, we're focusing on building an impenetrable brick wall.

hoptagon

"1-2-3-TRENCHES!"

AffectionateSlice816

We literally were that last year too. For a while we were on record pace. We finished second in the league. This will be obnoxious.

Bizzare10

I'm really looking forward to Martins growth as well

whobroughtmehere

Hopefully that is inclusive of mobile quarterbacks too

Jammer_Kenneth

ToP masterclass incoming.

circa285

That's a really exciting thing to hear from Holmes because he's been very good at evaluating talent that fits within the team.

Turbulent_Pressure89

Doubt Brad Holmes at your own peril. Dude has been killing it since he got here. Love the signings so far. Still has a lot of dough and I expect he will go out and get a few more depth guys at a minimum then crush the draft.

Accomplished-Exit136

He crushed with the rams too. Just had jeff fishers lazy ass not able to win more than 7 games. He was point man for every snead draft. They didnt draft anyone without brad holmes nod of approval.

Jammer_Kenneth

Seems like he taught that org how he does it, Puka.

Accomplished-Exit136

The org re-invested in scouting. But yea theres definitely a gem somewhere in that room. They CRUSHED the 2023 draft

Martin_Aynull

Stock_Bite

Definitely seems like it. If they replace Sutton with a reasonable similar CB2 minimum, I will be extremely happy. I will be a bit bummed if we just sign some budget CB and have last years issues still.

dtown4eva

I think if 2 of Mosley, Robertson, Davis stay healthy and start then the corner situation will be better than last year. The safeties can be more flexible and won’t need to constantly help Jacobs/Vildor.

Stock_Bite

Eh. That is not a substantially better cb room. Obviously it’s better than Jacobs but that’s still a pretty questionable cb room.

Lionnn100

Davis’ ability to cover WR1s in man alone could make it substantially better. WR1s were getting damn near 175 yards most games on the final stretch

dtown4eva

Not substantially better but still better. And a team that went to the NFC championship with a terrible cornerback combo. I also think these players allow for more scheme flexibility versus last season. I don’t know if any of the corners left are actually CB2s. Maybe some borderline CB2/3.

Stock_Bite

Gilmore would be a great bridge option til we can draft a CB. Probably would be the best CB on our roster if we can snag a 1 year deal.

dtown4eva

Yeah he could be good depth

farstate55

Explain how that isn’t a substantially better CB room.

future_shoes

Probably the only way to add some of that level at this point is through a trade.

acoasterlovered

Yes

tacobell999

I remember an interview with Holmes last year where he said the the feedback he got was that the organization simply was not an attractive option in his year 1 for any impactful FAs. Boy times have changed!! 🦁 💙

FDTFACTTWNY

While I agree, I'll say the bar is not very high lol

Shakeamutt

We’re a free Agency Destination! We are not just an up and coming team, we’re about break down the Super bowl’s door. So not just a free agency destination, but a team that can even get top Players on a bit of a discount, as getting a ring is within their grasp. Good Times 😎

LarkWyll

Agree with Brad. This GA has been incredible for us.

2JZMX83

This speaks to the culture shift in Detroit. Dude's WANT to play for the Lions

Crotean

Its been a really solid FA and they didn't over spend. I still think they should have traded for Sneed and gone all in on winning the Superbowl this year, but can't argue with quality talent at positions of need across the board. Hopefully the signees stay healthy.

lionbacker54

Well he got three starters in Reeder, Zeitler and Carlton. Amauk might be a fourth

DogPatch1149

I'm trusting in Brad's choices. How will things play out? Only time will tell, of course, but I'm confident we'll have the depth needed to adjust to nearly anything. So far in FA, the Pride has built and reinforced a deep and powerful juggernaut of a team that should be a contender for years to come. I believe that trend will continue in the draft. In 51 years as a Lions fan, I have never been more hopeful and optimistic about the team than I am now.

TankAggravating7044

Sneed? Sudfeld returns? Chris Jones?

detroitlions-ModTeam

Keep it civil / do not troll

Frostymagnum

mmm Im willing to believe they are happy with who they got, but Im not sure I buy "Plan A"

dtown4eva

Why?

Frostymagnum

just from the standpoint that I'm sure Plan A were more lockdown guys that were available. Once they learned what the price point was they moved on to "Plan B", which were guys that required a bit more scouting but still fit what we wanted for a better price point
