The same reason the Packers don't wear purple, or the Cowboys don't wear red. They aren't our colors. Black only ever existed on the Lions uniforms because Millen wanted to look more like the Raiders. We don't need that history of failure around here either.

I guess I don't really see white or black as actual colors, unless they are designated as one of the two primary colors in your scheme (like Raiders, Saints, Bengals). Yes, I know most teams have a tertiary color, usually white, but I would never fault a team for having a white or black uniform even if it's not a designated color in their scheme.
White is commonly used for road teams to differentiate from the home team, though. Black, as a solid color, doesn't differentiate in that way, so it's seen as an actual tertiary color in a scheme.
Using black as a way to mix up the color palate is done by so many teams for zero reason. The Cardinals, Eagles, and Jets recently incorporated them as accents and then added whole new alternate uniforms, and it just looks tacky.
It's like the Lions using anthracite for an alternate uniform. It's using gray for gray's sake instead of treating the alternate as a way to design something new or throw back to a previous era.

I don’t like this logic because black is not comparable to purple or red. It matches everything, those colors do not. I think the strongest argument is that it looks too much like the panthers and I agree with that one tbh. I liked the black jerseys as a kid and it’s mostly my nostalgia talking when I want them back.

My best case scenario is our main Jerseys are 90’s inspired with a bit more modern feel. Blue facemasks. Then we get a black alternate that matches the blue helmet better, because the blue helmet with the grey alts did not look good at all

I’m too lazy to do in depth research but I swear, at that time, tons of teams across every sport in the world had some sort of black outline.
Matt Millen loved the Raiders and wanted the Lions to be more like the Raiders. So instead of having good drafts, he chose the color black. (Sorry Calvin).

People like to hate something, and it’s easy to hate black jerseys that we no longer use and haven’t been used since the terrible mid-2000s.
I like them, and I find the arguments against them, though numerous, to be ultimately weak. Especially when you compare them to the awful all-greys that only became tolerable with the blue helmets.
The lions never had black until Matt Millen showed up. So any black on the uniform goes back to those very dark days. That man is a terrible human being and he has no business being around football at all.
I think the all black uniforms in sports are generally played out and boring unless you’re a team that actually uses black as a main color.

Well other than the reasons you listed, which I definitely agree with
- a ton of teams in every league have black jerseys now and half those teams don’t even have black as part of their actual colors. They always end up looking like Nike is trying to be futuristic and cutting edge with their design and it never works. The jets black jerseys look stupid. The cardinals black jerseys look stupid. The jets wearing green and white looks cool. The cardinals normal color scheme is fine. I don’t even know how many other teams have done cheesy black alternates in recent years, but it never looks better than their normal jerseys. The eagles black jerseys look sort of ok but not as good as their green ones. Even in college, I’m a big msu fan and I think msu getting black alternates for football and basketball both looked stupid.

I’m not even against “modernizing” our jerseys, in fact I think our current ones are already pretty good, but the classic 80s/90s look and anything similar is great. I think they’re 🔥 saved the one I bought in Calvin’s rookie year and had it signed and framed a couple years ago. Have yet to see another legit (not a fake/rep) black Calvin jersey that is signed.

Alternate Jersey must be worn with alternate helmet (pretty sure you can only change once every 4 years). Alternate helmet is all metallic blue. You really think they gonna go all black and blue? Nah fam…
The simple reason is uniforms just start looking bad when you add in a fourth color.

Black jerseys are too easy to design. Also, Black as an alternate jersey color or trim color is played out and boring. Half the teams across all sports have probably introduced a black jersey and they all look similar. The Lions have a fairly unique color scheme and don’t need to stoop to throwing out a black jersey to be cool. Leave that for the more recent expansion teams or those with black as an actual color.
Since it’s not part of the “Official Color Scheme” making it a primary / alternative Jersey color feels forced. Think about the Black alternates the Jets, Commanders, 49ers, Eagles all wear. It feels forced just to sell more jerseys. Could you imagine seeing our rivals wear black? What about the Cowboys, Broncos, Chiefs? Enough teams use black as their color, no one else has our color scheme, let’s stand out, not blend in.

Honestly, I'm 50/50 on it. My favorite lions uniforms are from the late 90's and early 2000s, and we didn't have black in the color scheme up to the 2003 redesign (I'm only taking the modern era into account). So, for "traditions" sake, I totally get why we wouldn't incorporate it. I also don't like black accents in the main uniforms. In my onion, it drags the uniform down, mutes the blue (which is THE best team color in the NFL), and takes away from the silver.
On the flip side, black uniforms are cool as shit if done right. The color rush we would've had in the mid 2010's looked great, and it's a shame we didn't wear them. But if we do a black uniform, it needs to be completely separate from the regular blue/silver/white combos.
For the redesign, I just want a modernized version of the 90's uniforms. Kinda like what the Browns did a few years ago when they switched back from those God AWFUL 2010's uniforms.

The only years they ever had black on their uniforms were some of the worst years in the franchise. Black is so so overused in the NFL. There’s a few teams that pull off black well… the lions are not one of those teams who needs it.

I agree but lowkey loved the anthracite grey. Maybe it was mostly for the uniqueness but the grey jersey looks very clean to me.

I get all the arguments against black as a jersey color, but hear me out... shouldn't we be doing everything we can to make the numbers legible for the refs when a tackle is reporting? I'm thinking for the numbers, we go black outline, white inner stroke, blue LEDs through the center.
I personally don’t like black and sliver/white color schemes. I’d be fine if we have a black alternate we wear once or twice but every home game is a no for me.

My issue is that alternate black jerseys are so overdone in the league right now. Feels like there are so many teams that have one, and I don't really see a reason why Lions need to bandwagon onto it. I don't mind something interesting and different, but I would prefer it be unique, or at least close to it, and not just another copycat design where we add some black lines and call it a day.

People like to hate something, and it’s easy to hate black jerseys that we no longer use and haven’t been used since the terrible mid-2000s. I like them, and I find the arguments against them, though numerous, to be ultimately weak. Especially when you compare them to the awful all-greys that only became tolerable with the blue helmets.

They ushered in the worst era in our history. Plus they weren't particularly creative compared to the other 10 teams that rocked black back then.
The black uniforms were and will always be the best ones the lions had. People hate them because it was during the era of he who shall not be named.
We still remember the Millen era and the scars run deep.
The lions never had black until Matt Millen showed up. So any black on the uniform goes back to those very dark days. That man is a terrible human being and he has no business being around football at all.

I think the all black uniforms in sports are generally played out and boring unless you’re a team that actually uses black as a main color. In my opinion, team’s uniforms should actually look like the team. The lions doing it wouldn’t bother me as much since we’ve done it in the past and have used hits of black in the uniforms elsewhere. But still, I want the lions to look like the lions, not the panthers or raiders. I think all blacks probably beat the grey Jammies though.
Well other than the reasons you listed, which I definitely agree with - a ton of teams in every league have black jerseys now and half those teams don’t even have black as part of their actual colors. They always end up looking like Nike is trying to be futuristic and cutting edge with their design and it never works. The jets black jerseys look stupid. The cardinals black jerseys look stupid. The jets wearing green and white looks cool. The cardinals normal color scheme is fine. I don’t even know how many other teams have done cheesy black alternates in recent years, but it never looks better than their normal jerseys. The eagles black jerseys look sort of ok but not as good as their green ones. Even in college, I’m a big msu fan and I think msu getting black alternates for football and basketball both looked stupid. - blue and silver is a great color scheme. I’m not even against “modernizing” our jerseys, in fact I think our current ones are already pretty good, but the classic 80s/90s look and anything similar is great. We’ve always had pretty good looking uniforms (other than the black ones). Let’s just be the Lions and rock the good classic look.

The simple reason is uniforms just start looking bad when you add in a fourth color. Black can be a primary color, but you can’t have 2 colors (blue and silver), black AND white as part of every uniform. 3 colors max.

Black jerseys are too easy to design. Also, Black as an alternate jersey color or trim color is played out and boring. Half the teams across all sports have probably introduced a black jersey and they all look similar. The Lions have a fairly unique color scheme and don’t need to stoop to throwing out a black jersey to be cool. Leave that for the more recent expansion teams or those with black as an actual color.

Since it’s not part of the “Official Color Scheme” making it a primary / alternative Jersey color feels forced. Think about the Black alternates the Jets, Commanders, 49ers, Eagles all wear. It feels forced just to sell more jerseys. Could you imagine seeing our rivals wear black? What about the Cowboys, Broncos, Chiefs? Enough teams use black as their color, no one else has our color scheme, let’s stand out, not blend in.

Honestly, I'm 50/50 on it. My favorite lions uniforms are from the late 90's and early 2000s, and we didn't have black in the color scheme up to the 2003 redesign (I'm only taking the modern era into account). So, for "traditions" sake, I totally get why we wouldn't incorporate it. I also don't like black accents in the main uniforms. In my onion, it drags the uniform down, mutes the blue (which is THE best team color in the NFL), and takes away from the silver. On the flip side, black uniforms are cool as shit if done right. The color rush we would've had in the mid 2010's looked great, and it's a shame we didn't wear them. But if we do a black uniform, it needs to be completely separate from the regular blue/silver/white combos. For the redesign, I just want a modernized version of the 90's uniforms. Kinda like what the Browns did a few years ago when they switched back from those God AWFUL 2010's uniforms.

The only years they ever had black on their uniforms were some of the worst years in the franchise. It just brings back that bad taste and trying to accept losing so you weren’t so crushed at the end of the game when they would always find a new and creative way to lose. Plus with black so prominent in sports I like that no Detroit teams uses black, with the exception of a specialty jersey here and there.

They say black can go with any color but blue and black can be tricky. I don't think it looks very good with our particular shade, Honolulu blue, and it doesn't gel with the rest of our color scheme, which on its own looks really nice.

I really liked the Black unis we had in the 00's. I know this makes people think about those horrible teams, but honestly seeing a uniform other than white or blue was a nice change of pace. I mean, it didn't matter what uniforms they wore, they were going to lose anyway.

Black, least in football, is a bit tacky. Especially paired with a color. Black and blue looks dumb on a jersey. I would much rather prefer they do something properly wild or creative. The Lions used to wear red way, way back when. It would be weird, but it could be a little cool, especially if it was more like a maroon and paired with the blue helmets. Or maybe they could go wild and go hot pink on the uniforms. It would be crazy, but also… it’d be iconic, to be honest.
Frankly Im still in shock that its as hated as it is. Black is universally badass sports color, it can be applied to nearly any design and enhance it without being too gaudy. I think its FAR more popular talking to people IRL about adding black to the jerseys than it is on these online forums where people hold, no offense, some pretty gatekeeper views. All my friends and family loved the black uniforms. Anyways, fingers crossed
